I'm not that guy, but there probably aren't any great examples of selective desaturation outside of Schindler's List. It's just a cheesy amateur effect.
There are other ways to make color pop, however. This isn't that far removed from SOOC, but I did boost the pinks slightly and made the rest of the image more blue overall to contrast the colors. I'm sure you could have done something similar to your photo as well.

overall I'd say you need to pick better more lively subjects, most of you guys pictures are empty, frame/crop more creatively/interestingly, you don't need to keep 100% of the frame you shot, and think twice before doing more than the bare minimum in post. A boring shot can hardly be saved by fucking with the colours in Lightroom.

I don't think you need much cropping, you need some space on the left and right side for balance. You can always play with cropping on the top or bottom, but it's not strictly necessary. Plus the light on the lady's dress fades nicely right at the bottom edge so that's good. So no cropping for you.

-contrast abuse
-saturation abuse
-"HDR" tonemapping shit

the first 4 are huge noob mistakes that all noobs make while they think it makes them think they're much better than they are, like their crappy shot of a fern is "art" and "deep" because it's in B&W

here is a good example of good B&W, very sensible choice there), clearly they're not, but when I say >muh B&W that's because someone resorted to B&W for no good reason at all for a crappy shot. Sure, some people prefer to shoot in B&W, but I just generally think less of them for that choice.
But also high levels of autism. High enough that I think curve adjustments should probably not be used at all, except for gamma and capping the brights maybe sometimes.

I've been called a hipster a lot in my life, which has lead me to really think about what the term means. I believe there are two main uses:
1: People who dress too /fa/ (for the person who says hipster)
This can be people who do the whole beard, flannel, microbrew aesthetic, then there's people who dress in SLP style stuff i.e. tall and thin, also people who dress in hypebeast stuff i.e. supreme and obey, but especially the 'dressed by the internet' aesthetic of rick owens and rafdidas, then of course whatever other style makes people self conscious about what they wear.
2: People whose taste appears dis-genuine
Pretty straightforward, but I think this one is often peoples inability to grasp others taste. Think of someone who carries a polaroid, enjoys coffee black, listens to obscure music, uses a typewriter, only watches old movies, collects records/VHS and whatever else people don't think someone could possibly like. Note that this group is comprised of people that genuinely enjoy these things and those that do it to fit into the first group

There are a lot of people who enjoy things only because it makes them fit into a group of people. Going out of your way to do something in a way that makes your experience objectively worse because it helps you to feel unique or special can have a positive affect on your self esteem, but it's a shitty and obvious ploy to deal with a much deeper middle-class wannabe life struggles issue. On the outside, looking in, you see the flaws. Much like looking at a bunch of emo kids in early high school, you can see every insecurity they have, and can see the obvious crap they're doing to try to deal with it, and from the outside, it's very hard to respect them for it.
It doesn't help that a lot of the time, the people in these "counter" cultures, have no fucking clue what they're talking about, and only spout things they've overheard other people saying.
Preferring vinyl over MP3 is fine, maybe, but you can't hear the difference between the two on your $60 record player you got from Urban Active. Eating healthy is one thing. Eating only certain colored roots because your friend's blog said it's better for your made up gluten intolerance is retarded. Riding a fixed gear bike is objectively worse. Etc. It's shallow, and it only has value inside its own society, where everyone agrees to give it value. From the outside, looking in, it's like watching children play war with sticks. If riding a fixed gear bicycle was more fun than other types, then it would be widely done by people who aren't hipsters as well, and yet walking across campuses and wandering around downtown areas full of bike riders shows that it's mainly ignored by other people outside of the culture.
In reality, it's very similar to carving SLAYER into your arm as a teenager. It's objectively worse than NOT doing it, but it's an important "me too!" cue to be in the club, and have other people in your culture come and talk about their experiences with theirs.

Sorry to continue this argument, but a fixed gear can be more fun to ride if you enjoy the feeling of a fixed drivetrain; among other things, it allows you to better control your speed and even ride backwards. It's been popular since bikes were first invented, before the gearfags of the bikeworld got started with their hi-vis this and their carbon-framed that.
If, say, hipsters did take up RC cars (or, if RC cars became hip), how could you then differentiate people who are into it for the fun from those that are into it for its symbolic value?

I can accept other cultures easily. The toning isn't really as good here. The shadow on the flower kills any effect it might have, plus it's too small in the frame. Small flowers are only good if you have lots of them.
The bokeh is a bit distracting. Plants with large leaves like that create distracting background blur.
The wire is distracting. Always try to remove any elements from the frame that lead your eye away from the subject. If you can't remove something in the field, remove it in post, if you can.

I was a bit close, about 5 or 6 feet on manual focus just guessing since af couldnt catch. Obv. my fstop was high too to account for focus. Was this the right approach?
I could bump the iso more, but my camera is piss in low light. Also maybe use flash from the side rather than directly on?
If there is a sense of lack of commitment, it's because I'm still practicing getting comps on the fly and getting close to a subject. I was however somewhat fearless in my approach that night.
Something else that probably doesn't help is the lack of background. Once I try this in the city maybe I can find spots to solve this issue.
I think I will try this again once I relocate cities.

While it may look like this style may not be for me, reminder that it was my first time shooting in this situation. I generally like wandering around snapshitting varieties of people and I see no reason to stop because you told me it is a meme here. It's not a meme in real life, or at least that's the way I see it. What is a meme to me however are cliche photos of old men smoking or pushing trolleys.
Right now I'm thinking about finding specific qualities about people to shoot in order to pull a cohesive idea/concept based on said qualities. Obviously none of that was apparent in the 7 photos I posted. This was for practice.
If you think it was /p/ that even influenced me to go out and shoot this in the first place you are terribly mistaken. That's on my own ideologies (or lack thereof) on what is socially acceptable to do in public with photgraphing.
This is fun for me and I don't think I'll be stopping any time soon. The insults don't get to me because none or almost none of the subjects understand what I'm doing. Once I start getting more opportunities for consensual portraiture work I may change my mind, but I am going ganbare the fuck out of what I enjoy for the time being.

Drop shutter speed, that'll enhance the backgrounds without having to raise ISO - the flash will freeze the subjects, but they still need more light on them - was flash on full power?
Key thing is to fill the frame more - with this set I'd experiment with aggressive crops and tilts.

Yeah flash was on full power. I used max shutter speed because both me and the subjects are both in motion in most of these photos. I'll try differently next time.
Reason why I want to try to use indirect flash is to get visible shadows. With more in the back exposed that'll help of course.
