>FUJIFILM

I have a FF Nikon setup, I am interested in getting an XT-1 or Xpro2.

Show me your best images showing Fuji color and lens quality.

Please tell mr what body and what lens each image is shot with, thanks.

I would show you my stuff, but I'm ashamed of my photos and I wouldn't want to turn you off of Fuji.

Show me what you got, I am primarily interested in images before they are processed to death (showing what the camera can do) as well as the quality of fuji lenses.

Thanks.

Why would unprocessed photos help you with anything? Will you be posting a lot of those?
Unprocessed photos look like shit regardless of what camera you take them with.

If you want sterile test conditions, you should consider an a6300!

Don't think he's posted anything in a while. Some real gems there and shows what the x-t1 is capable of doing.

I think this is a fantastic image.
Wonderfully framed and composed shot, it's just a pity about the fireworks. Presumably unstaged.

What I want to know is, say if you were taking it again, would it be possible to get clearer fireworks with any special combination of settings on the 100T? Under "ideal conditions" sorta deal.

I mean, could you have increased the shutter speed and cranked up the iso in order to freeze the light burst or would that have made the rest of the image untenable due to noise or whatever?
Or was this just the tradeoff for getting the image in the first place?

Thanks, still learning.

Short answer is, if you knew the fireworks were coming - I didn't - then supporting the camera on a tripod or even a bag or jacket, etc, on a bench or a seat and releasing it with a remote or timer would yield a sharper image.

That was a bit of a grab shot without any notice.

I figured as much that it was taken at chance.

Just wanted to know if it was possible at all (with that camera).

Thanks.

Broadly comparable to the XT-1 and other cameras with that sensor - I would say probably half a stop better in noise performance. But of course that's on a higher resolution sensor - 24 vs 16 - so if you downscaled it to 16MP you'd probably get another stop or so of noise performance back as well.

Noise is pretty subjective; I was always happy to use my X Pro 1 up to 3200, and same with X100S/T and XT-1; I'm pretty happy using my X Pro 2 at 6400.

To give you some idea, >>2832835 is shot at ISO 6400 at f/1.2 - so it was fairly dark. I'll give you a 100% crop with NR turned off in Adobe Camera Raw - and remember that with X-camera files, ACR/Bridge is not the best at fine detail; you can get better detail and noise performance with Photo Ninja, Iridient Developer, and others.

Also worthy of note is that some additional wizardry going on with noise and the Across film sim:

Where X100 series does help in this instance is that a viewfinder gives you a third point of contact which is good for stability; the OVF means you can watch what's happening outside the frame to give you the best chance to time it right, there's no mirror to slap and add to motion and the electronic shutter reduces motion again.

Faster shutter would mean freezing the firework and reducing the size of the light trails. But yeah, resting the camera in some way or having a stabilised camera or body is the best way to fix that blur.

I'm on Windows, so no Iridient, and C1 isn't enough of an improvement over lightroom for me to make the transition. If I didn't have PS, the layers and stuff would be great, but I DO have PS, so it's not a big win there.

Photo Ninja is the only program with enough of a jump in detail and image control over the awesome flow of lightroom to seem worth it to me.

Anyone either have or been tempted by the Mitakon 35mm 0.95?
For shits and giggles?

The updated model is about 20% smaller and 200g lighter.

I have no need for it, just think it might be a fun lens to fuck around with.
>>
>>2832959
I considered it, but not for very long. It's not great wide open, so it'll just be a gimmick lens, and without autofocus, it's too much hassle for me. If it were $50, maybe, but it's not a serious tool in my bag, so I'll bypass it.
>>
>>2832959
I was tempted until I found out it was APS-C. Wideangle with lots of background blur would be a unique gimmick that I'd try but it's basically a 50mm 1.4.

The 50mm 1.1 on the other hand is tempting. Or if I had the money, the 0.95s

I find the sensor very capable, I plan on skipping the XT2 AND XPRO 2 and waiting for their 3rd gen.

Focus peaking makes using old lenses really easy, this was taken on my Pentax 50mm 1.7 at F2 I've always enjoyed the rendition of this lens.

Focus on the XT1 is almost on level with my 5Diii apart from very fast moving subjects.

Classic chrome (this image is using it) is really nice and being able to use it as a profile in Lightroom gives me a great base to work from.

having an ISOless sensor is great for getting more dynamic range and is a very different shooting experience compared to my Canon where I have no room for error in camera.

I tend to shoot everything a stop or two under.

How fucking god-tier is Fuji for travel? I can't imagine packing my Canon gear for a holiday again. I always think I should sack up and just take an X100T, and always cave in and go for multiple lenses, but even so the bang for buck ratio with weight is hilarious.

Is it worth it to get an X-pro2 or should I just get the 1
>>
>>2833170
XE-2. I love my X Pro 1 and I couldn't imagine not having the OVF, but it's in some ways the X-series prototype, and it's aged a lot now. I used it again while my XT-1 was getting repaired and I was waiting on my XP2, and it really shows its age. The XE-2 just got a FW update that puts it up with the XT-1 and XT-10 with autofocus.

I shelved my 5Diii for everything other than paid jobs I spend 3 years traveling only with an x100s and I always thought I would want more lenses but it simply was not the case, I think just using one lens made me a better artist constantly having to think about how to get that shot that would be super easy with a zoom, panning, going places I should not.. all great haha. then I got a used XT1 for £400 and a 12mm f2 + 35mm 1.4 next is a 56 1.2 I'm going to use the 5Diii for my studio work when I'm not renting a phase plus anytime I'm shooting fast events other than that I'm going full fuji.

>>2833170
I kinda have the same problem, I want a backup body to my XT1 as I'm going to start doing paid work with it. I would say get the XE2 as it got more updates is faster in day to day and focuses faster.
>>2833173 If it's your only camera treat yourself to the XPRO2 if not get a used XPRO 1 for like £200 on ebay bro they are great. If you can get the XE2.

For what? For most uses, the 2 is dramatically better. For some uses, it's more or less the same.

>>2833170
Unless you NEED an OVF, get the X-E2.
>>
>>2833179
Travel cam, street stuff, probably gonna be my main camera for everything. AF speed is my biggest concern, along with usability with manual lenses.
>>
>>2833177
I got myself a phablet and a OTG cable to put images from my camera to the phone.
I've had my Instagram around a year and the set up of mirrorless + a phone makes me feel so free to travel and shoot and share and not feel tired down to a computer.
I keep my "Fuji backpack" packed at all times and when I feel like it I will go and shoot for a few hours.
>>
>>2833180
Then you want the 2.
The screen is dramatically better for MF, and the AF is FUCK faster.

I'd get an XPro1 as a fun "I don't want to shoot film" film camera on the side of my main camera and my backup. Some people can use it as a prime (isi for instance) but for most people, no.
>>
>>2833177
>I shelved my 5Diii for everything other than paid jobs I spend 3 years traveling only with an x100s and I always thought I would want more lenses but it simply was not the case

Yeah my 5D2s only come out for paid work; I've travelled a lot and kinda go through phases. Last trip I'd just gotten the 16-55 and 50-140 combo and knew it was silly to take the weight of them overseas but did it anyway; the trip before that I had an X Pro 1 w/ 14/35/56mm and barely used it, mostly using an X100S. Now I'm looking in my bag packed for a few weeks away and I'm back to primes again - and will no doubt end up thinking I should have just gone with an X100 lol.

I was still sticking to Canon for off-camera flash; I've had problems with my PWs working on my X Pro 2 but just got a Yongnuo knock-off of the Canon wireless transmitter and so far it's been hilariously reliable. If I can satisfy myself that it's not going to go down, I think I might seriously buy another as a spare and use my 600EXs on my Fuji gear and fuck the Canon stuff off.

I would say get the XE-2. It has better AF, better EVF, and better manual focus aids. The XE series is very easy to use and very small and light. If you have a littler extra I would say to get the XT1 though.

Personally my eyes get strained easily when looking at the EVF's, so the Xpro works very well for me, but the XT Is a great camera honestly, it really is the prime realization of what the first gen of Xtrans can do.

Even better than that, Electronic shutter mode on an X-T1 or XPro2. Literally no sound at all. If there's no major motion in the shot, rolling shutter doesn't touch you.

>>2833445

I just leave it set to auto iso. I made two presets, one goes to iso800 and one to 3200. If your images look great up to iso 6400, why would you bother with setting the iso manually? I shoot in aperture priority and adjust the exposure compensation if needed. I don't shoot raw anymore. I just transfer the jpegs to my phone and edit via vsco. Perfect travel setup. The only thing that bothers me is the battery life of both, the xe2 i used to own and the x100t i now use. I've got enough batteries, but seeing them drain so fast still makes me nervous.

OP here,

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

Just curious, can someone post some images taken with the film simulations without being post processed afterwards?

I understand that post processing can make an image look better but I am still not sure how the XT1 will compare to my Nikon SOOC (also curious about a non film simulation profile, does it just have a standard setting?)

Bonus point for images taken in a city/of buildings etc as its what I will primarily be shooting.

Thanks /p/

>>

I like the Samyang 12mm for landscapes and the 18mm f2 for street.
>>
>>2833457
I default to the 16-55 as a do-all lens that takes the work out of thinking about what lenses I want to pack; the 14mm is not super expensive but is rather good; the 23mm is beautiful, but I use my X100T way more than I use that lens. Still haven't tried the 16mm f/1.4, which is something I was waiting on for ages, but it's received uniformly great reviews
>>
>>2833369
I had the X-A1 when it first came out. I did not care for it at all.

How is the X-A2?
>>
>>2833463
35 equivalent and wider. I should mention that I also have a GR, so 28 equivalent is covered.

>>2833469
Looks pretty tempting, but how does it balance with the X-T10? I'll probably upgrade to the Xpro2 some time after the X-T2 comes out, but I'm digging the compactness of the X-T10 for now. Got any pics with the 16?

>>2833517
Thanks! I wonder how the 18 compares to the GR. I do like that focal length...

>>2833529
I really need to grab that kit lens too. I've never really been a zoom guy but it seems like a very useful lens and often pretty cheap used too.

>>
>>2833473
Assuming this is in the context of shooting raw, you'd be best served by ETTR - Fujis are extremely good at recovering highlights, though it's a quality not many seem to take advantage of.
Step one is set up the camera to produce extremely flat jpegs (I.e. ProNeg Hi sim with -1 highlights and -1 shadows) - this will give you a histogram display you can rely on to provide recoverable highlights when the far right bar is just clipping (or just about to clip if you want to play it extra safe) - this means +EC as often as not.
Consistently under exposing shots is definitely not the way to go.
>>
Do Fuji have a flash option? best off camera setup??
>>
>>2833856
There's a few ways you can go:

- Fuji have a few (frankly shitty) TTL flashes available, with no way to trigger them off camera. There's talk of a wifi flash coming this year but it's been delayed.

>Third party speedlights and:

- Optically trigger Nikon SBs, or various cheap Yongnuos, etc. XT-1 doesn't have a pop up flash but has a little clip on fixed unit that triggers quite reliably; it also works on the XP2. The lower models have some kind of built in.

- PocketWizards - though there's an incompatibility issue with Mini TT1s and the XP2

- Cheap radio triggers, or other reputable triggers from Cactus, et al

- Roboshoot makes TTL triggers for Fuji that will support TTL on Nikon speedlites.

- For Canon users, I have a few 600EX-RTs- I'm triggering their native radio receivers in manual but with output control with the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT. Quite reliable so far, takes AAs, not super big.

>Or of course:
- PC sync on some bodies or hotshoe sync cables
>>

>>

>>

>>
>>2833881
For what ?
>>
>>2833862
Nice sensor, nice lenses, slow camera with a crappy viewfinder.

Not sure what type of photographer you are but chances are good you'll be at least a bit frustrated.
>>
>>2833889

I own a Pentax MX and I want to try digital photography.
I shoot mostly in the streets and few portraits. I need something small and not too heavy, like my slr. And also something that gives decent results in low-light shots.
I don't want to spend a lot of money in my first DSLR.

The Fuji X-E1 seems a good choice, but I want more opinions.
>>
>>2833894
You're not going to get good low light performance on ANY Fuji body, the difference between crop and full frame is crazy for low light shots.
>>
>>2833894
If you're coming from film, you will probably not mind most of the limitations. The sensor will do well in low light, but the viewfinder won't. Autofocus will also leave you wanting, but again, coming from a manual SLR you'll be okay.
>>
>>2833895
That's not even a little bit true...?
Hell, the XPro2 is on par with the A7II in low light, even after being "corrected" for its ISO rating disparity.

Fuji's 16mp sensor does excellently even at 6400
>>
>>2833895

But it can be fixed in post processing, right?

>>2833896

I don't mind doing the focus by myself, since I'm used to.
I understand the viewfinder kinda sucks, but it's not really a big deal, is it?
>>
>>2833888
landscape, street, portrait. Sometimes still life.
>>
>>2833921
Well weight to IQ ratio is a major reason. The full frame sensors give you a bit more DR and high ISO but at the cost of being bricks that when coupled with 3-4 lenses simply is not fun to walk around with.

Landscapes the DR is fine I've never had a problem exposing for the sky and bringing everything else out in post always looks clean just stick to 200 and you can push the shadows to 3200 and they will still be clean.
>>
>>2833906
>I understand the viewfinder kinda sucks, but it's not really a big deal, is it?
It very much can be, since you're relying on that viewfinder to see your scene. In low light, it will be choppy and laggy, and won't show much fine detail to allow for correct focusing. There are focusing aids that will help, but still, it won't be a party.

Most of the negative stigma about Fuji cameras comes from the Gen1 bodies. They were slow, clunky, inaccurate, and somewhat difficult to use. People liked them anyways because of the styling, and the lenses, but really, they didn't compete with the rest of the market. Much of that has been fixed today, but not much has been done to improve the oldest bodies. Cameras like the X-E2 have gotten major upgrades and improvements because the hardware inside could handle being pushed further, but the oldest stuff like the XPro1 and X-E1 didn't have the meat inside to allow for upgrades in any major area.

still very usable in many situations, and if you aren't used to high performance, you may not mind, but in terms of the viewfinder, if you're coning from a bright big full frame SLR viewfinder, you will almost certainly be unhappy with the experience of using an X-E1 in low light.

It won't affect the image quality, but it may severely affect your shooting experience.

I'd suggest buying one from someplace with a return policy to be sure that if you DO hate it, you can get your money back. The image quality will be great, but you may not be able to deal with the rest.

Thanks for your reply.
Would it be wiser to put more money in my purchase and get the EX2?
>>
>>2833927
If you can swing it financially, yeah. There is a dramatic difference in user experience between the two.
>>
>>2833928
>>2833927
Especially given the XE-2 just got a major firmware revision and practically all new AF system
>>
I'm more familiar with fixed focal, and thus never used a zoom.
How is the zoom kit with the EX2?
>>

An X-T1 will treat you very nicely for your stated uses. Small, quick, great viewfinder, great image quality, great lenses, great overall experience. Not as heavy or intimidating, not as inconvenient .

I love my Fuji over what I used to shoot with Canon for portraits. I haven't done any digging into why this is the case, but I find that for skin (and portraits in general) I very much prefer the way that detail is rendered on the Fuji. On Canon, there is lots of detail, but it's all really poppy crunchy detail that you find yourself spending a lot of time trying to soften to get a portrait of anything OTHER than the detail, if you know what I mean.
On my Fuji stuff, all of that detail is still there, and the files are very sharp and clean, but the detail isn't nearly as obtrusive. Things look much more smooth. And then if you want to, you can go in later and crunch things up.

It may just be the lenses used, not having as much micro contrast? Maybe it's something to do with the way the files are interpreted by photoninja/lightroom, etc. (To be clear, I'm not talking about Adobe's issues with fine detail, that's a different matter)

If I was going to shoot nothing but portraits, I'd grab a Fuji literally every time.
>>
>>2833935
The kit zoom on Fuji is (to my knowledge) the best kit lens available on any system. great build quality, great AF, great image quality.

On its own, it sells for $700 new. It's not a "starter lens" it's a genuinely great lens.
>>
Posted a similar question in the gear thread a few days ago but didn't really get an answer.

I'm thinking of upgrading from an X-E1 to an X-E2 because I hate the X-E1's slow write speeds. I use manual lenses 99% of the time and it sometimes takes irritatingly long after just a single shot before I can use focus magnification again. I am already using a fast SD card btw.
How much better is the X-E2's write speed? Ideally I'd like to be able to use the magnification nearly instantly after taking a shot. Can some with an X-E2 please test this?

(And I know focus peaking keeps working while the card is writing, but it's far too inaccurate for me. In fact I think I can eyeball the focus better when it's off.)
>>
Help me decide /p/.

I'm going on a 6 month trip to europe/asia, and I'm not planning on taking my entry DSLR.

I'm torn between the X100T (drawbacks are no WR and possible succesor soon) and paying double for an X-Pro 2 and either the 35mm f2 WR or the soon to come 23mm f2 WR. The Xpro leaves me with a great camera for when I come back home to work with, but it's almost double the price with a lens.

An X200 announcement soon would be great, but until then, what sould I go for?
>>
>>2833986
If money is no object, then obviously the xpro2 if that's what you want.

If the purchase of either camera would eat significantly and detrimentally into your travel expenses, then don't buy either.
Get something cheaper that you can stomach the loss of if it gets stolen/broken (to where are you travelling specifically?)
A GR (if you can stomach the DUST) - they're cheaper now, or X70 if you want something in the fuji ecosystem.

Is the only reason you want to buy either is because you don't want to lug your dslr around for this half year trip? Or were you planning on buying one or the other anyway?

I live in Thailand, and am in constant anxiety about mold eating my shit up. My house is made out of humidity and dust, with two construction sites on either side, a river on one end and on the last side, bugs (lots).

35/f2WR lives on the xt1 when it leaves its dry cabinet, unless I know I'm going to be indoors and aircon'd all day, out of the dust and humid heat.

In and out of air conditioned hotel rooms fogs shit up something nasty, unless you place a cam inside a ziplock and allow it to acclimatise over 20mins every time.
It'll be summer, after all, and at least in Thailand the Rainy Season of Suck.

On theft: shit gets stolen, even if you're a savvy traveller. Come to the crappier parts of the world with flashy gear and you're asking for it.
Lucky that all this fuji stuff is mostly quite small. X100 is kinda eye-catching though (if you go for the silver one). A clever thief might even mistake it for a leica, at least temporarily.

Remember to factor into final cost: some spare batteries; any filters you may need; lens pens or whatever; ziplocks and silica gel sachets.
Maybe even a 3rd party charger that allows usb charging so you can charge on the go with an external powerbank.

Every little bit adds up, and I don't know how strapped you are for cash.
>>
>>2834011
Oh, but one thing I strongly recommend you do bring, if you do fuji in the end, is the instax printer for shits and giggles. Great fun and a good way to make the acquaintance of fellow travellers/inquisitive locals.

Unless of course this is not a leisure trip.
>>
holy fuck i just found out AE-L will autofocus when i'm in MF.

>>
>>2834088
Unfortunately it's not a perfect replacement for back button focus. It won't use zone focus points, and usually seems slower and less sure than regular focusing (in my testing)
>>
>>2834093

Yeah, but it's a nice little touch for nailing critical focus when you're shooting 100$$$ street.
>>
>>2833986
As mentioned previously, if money is no object, the X-Pro2, definitely.

Keep in mind that the X-Pro2 DOES NOT come with a lens. There is no kit you can buy.

I would recommend the 18mm f2 or the 23mm f2 lens.

The 24mm is also an option. The only reason I recommend the 18 or the 23 over the 35 is because they both put you wide and closer to 35mm than the 35mm lens would which is going to put you at 56mm.

If you're into fine detail, and are hoping to use a Fuji, the software choice you make to deal with your raw conversion is very important. Adobe is improving, but still at the bottom of the pack in terms of fine detail (if that's your thing)

You mean RAW to JPEG?

What's up with Adobe being shitty at it?
>>
>>2834118
In my case, I use PN for Raw (RAF) to lossless TIFF, then import the TIFF into lightroom and process as normal.

The color filter (and other settins) is unique on a Fuji, and requires a different algorithm to translate. Adobe's isn't great at it. Others are better.

There's only speculation on why Adobe struggles. Some say they sacrifice accuracy for speed, others say it's just because they don't care since Fuji's market share is so small, others still say that they do it on purpose, to keep other manufacturers from getting uppity and making other unique architectures that would make their lives harder.

>>2834118
it's all down to camera profiling which lightroom and photoshop do extraordinarily well. the need for a third-party developer is a myth that's perpetuated too often
>>
I am honestly struggling to decide between a Fuji or SONY setup.

I am primarily interested in the Fuji because I am in a unique position to get some equipment at cost price AND for the Fuji philosophy of continuous improvement as well as the build quality and care (like being all metal, made in Japan emphasis on lens quality and image quality etc)

BUT I am still tempted by 1. The FF sensors in the Sony cameras, as well as the third party lens options like the Voigtlander 10mm prime which is just insane and not even something I could get from Nikon or Canon.

Has anyone else been in this situation and what made you choose one over the other?

Do you do anything to the RAF files before converting them to lossless TIFFs for Lightroom? That's a lot of gain in sharpness for just the raw conversion in PN.
>>
>>2834468
>That's a lot of gain in sharpness for just the raw conversion in PN.
That's because PN does a good job of translating the data where LR doesn't.

You don't have to do anything other than export to TIFF in PN if you don't want, but I usually go in and remove all noise reduction (unless the shot really needs it. PN does a good job of noise reduction in my experience)

I also add some contrast, fix white balance, and otherwise "equalize" the exposure to get a good starting point, and then do all of the real editing in LR and PS. I find Adobe products a LOT easier to use for getting the looks I like, but PN can give you a much cleaner and sharper starting point.

Sometimes, I don't bother, because detail doesn't really do much for an image, but if there's one in particular that DOES need it, there's a lot more to be had.
>>
>>2834088
I really like that feature. I've also noticed that it seems to AF more accurately when doing it that way, as opposed to using the shutter release in AF-S, at least on my OG X100.
>>

Thanks, I was really curious because I don't want to cut out LR from my workflow entirely but I'm getting a Fuji soon & the raw processing--like you said--does matter.
>>
>>2834483
You can cut out LR, but for me, it's invaluable. I do probably 80% of my editing there. It makes it great for doing color, tone, contrast, and style edits.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way yet to get the benefits of PN, while still being able to use the camera calibration simulation stuff that is so great in LR. Hoping to find a way.

Wrong, as others have said and that other anon has proven (likely more than once if it's the same guy with the bw headshots from previous threads).

Well known issue. Simple google search will bring it up.
LR is convenient as a photomanager and people just have gotten used to it, but for fuji it's not optimal.

It's also the source of much bitching from many sides (usually the sony forum on dprev) about mushy, lack of details, foliage probs on fuji.
ONLY if you use LR.

when would be a good time to under expose? I'm using my x100t to take photos for my sister's prom. Location will be outdoors with lots of trees and natural light. Would I need to underexpose in a situation like this and expose correctly for the highlights? Is this what you meant by using the histogram, underexposing until the highlights dont clip anymore?
>>
>>2834482
pretty sure this is because it uses a larger focus box in this mode than in af-s
>>
>>2834575
GL - I should add that histograms do not represent signal captured in a linear form; that final bar on the right represents an exponentially greater amount of data than the far left bar (if that makes sense).
>>2834577
In that kind of scenario (huge DR, constantly changing lighting) I would use either a 2 stop soft grad filter (awkward but effective if you're comfortable working that way, and you need something like the Lee system so you can position the filter properly for the scene) or fill flash (built in is fine unless you're using the TCL/WCL which will block it) at -2/3 if about 4/5 paces away or -1/3 if further (like when going for full body) just to even out the exposure a bit. With either of those methods you can play it safe with EC and underexpose by -1 or more. Use both and you'll have almost perfect exposures SOOC, but don't sweat the whole grad filter thing, was just throwing it in for completeness.
Fill flash is awesome in full daylight combined with the built in ND filter as you can shoot f2.8 for subject separation (I've found this aperture on APSC at 23mm is pretty much perfect for upper body shots as your subject is still entirely within the focal plane so edges are nice and sharp). Also for maximum separation try and get the light coming in from the side/upper left or right. Added bonus will be no squinting faces.
Finally don't forget to direct the hell out of these people, use EVF for setup and OVF to nail fleeting expressions and do a practice run if you can in similar conditions just to get a feel for how the flash changes things.
Hope that all makes sense - best of luck.
>>
>>2834607

Size and weight, and the color and contrast that come out of Fuji's sensors.

I currently have a D610, which I downsized to from a D3S when I switched from sports photography to being an in-house photog for a company, and it's a good camera, but I've never liked the images that come out of it as much as the ones from the D3S. I recently got an X100, and photos come straight into Lightroom looking the way my D610 photos do after 10 minutes of tweaking and filtering. That might not be a big deal for casual photography, but if you do any kind of volume it's huge and saves hours of time and energy.

Even with a small FF camera like the D610, my kit is still a pain to lug around, too. I love the idea of having the same capabilities in something half the size and weight, and am seriously considering selling my Nikon gear and buying an XT2 setup when it comes out.

Any of you actually use Silkypix?

So far I have an XT1 with a 35 1.4, 12mm 2.0. I want to get a standard zoom next the 16-55 is 2.8 is far to big and frankly my Tamrom 24-70 2.8 IS shits all over it. So I'm left with the 18-55 or the 16-50 anyone here used both? I'm thinking the 16 being a 24 is more useful than the 1/3 I lose vs the 2.8-4. Optically they are pretty close so it comes down to 24mm vs 2.8-4.0 and it being £100 cheaper.

16-50 if you want a 16.

I tried it when first getting disappointed with the rendering in Lightroom, but found it totally unusable. It was the version that came with the camera though, so I have no idea how a more robust version might act. Mine didn't even have sliders. In stead, it had drop down menus. There would be a segment called "shadows" and there was a dropdown that would give me an option for "Darker - Dark - Medium - Light - LIghter" and that's it. Like, really guys?

wut
I haven't used the Tamron, but the 16-55 is excellent. In what aspects does your Tamron beat it out? If I remember correctly, the Tamron is softer and less corrected than the Canon 24-70 mk1 which was only "pretty good" and the only reason you'd buy it is for the IS.
>>
>>2835169

>>2835437
>Other than that I think it makes sense to just bite the bullet on an x100/s/t or if you care tons about size the Sony RX100 the x70 without a EFV kinda sucks.
Right.
It's not as versatile as a rx100 sony (m3 and up) or even say a canon g7x or whatever the new one is called.

No stabilisation for video, and on that of course
>fuji
>video
in the first place.

The GR has a better 18mm lens, capable of being waaay more discrete (though of course dust issues).

The X70 seems to be for those that already have a full fuji interchangeable lens system, and want a pocketable, no frills no hassle cam with a familiar layout and feel in terms of colours and files. Maybe something taken for day trips on holidays where the risk of theft of your main fuji system is too great. Or out on dinners and nights out where a larger cam wouldn't be appropriate.

Really kinda niche, as anyone looking or a small travel cam would be better served with something like the rx100 or g7x or even an lx100. And if you needed something like the GR or Nikon A you would already have it.

Doesn't even have a built in ND filter so you've either got to fumble about with the cumbersome filter attachment or risk rolling shutter or other probs with the electronic shutter. If it had at least this staple for modern pocketable p&s then it would be able to stand amongst the competition.

As it stands I just don't get it. Personally don't see the appeal.
>>
>>2835458
You remember wrong the Tarmon is neck and neck with the Canon mark ii.

It has IS and the Fuji does not. I already have a work set up with Canon I'm just looking for small little lenses and the 24-70 has less features and does not offer anything new vs my Tamron so I'd rather get a small kit lens and maybe 2 more primes. Perhaps "shits all over it" is an over statement though.
>>
>>2835478
>At the 70mm end of the zoom range, the Canon performs well across the frame, even wide open at f/2.8, while the Tamron is significantly softer around the borders. The Tamron’s borders remain softer than the Canon until stopped down to about f/11, but they’re pretty good by about f/8, and for most purposes, are perfectly usable even at f/5.6.

http://www.lightandmatter.org/2013/equipment-reviews/lens-comparison-canon-ef-24-70-f2-8l-ii-vs-tamron-24-70-f2-8-vc/

>In the center of the frame Canon's lens was always slightly sharper and at 24mm the edges were significantly sharper than Tamron's.
>When we compared the optics to Canon's 24-70mm (version 1) we got some interesting results. Throughout the whole zoom range the Tamron had serious vignetting issues at 2.8. At F4 and above vignetting was no longer an issue.
https://fstoppers.com/gear/review-tamron-24-70mm-28-vc-vs-canon-24-70mm-5701
>>
>>2835486
And then you have the Fuji 16-55
>The Fuji XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is optically superb. As shot on Fuji's cameras which compensate for everything, it's as perfect as I can measure.
>It's ultrasharp and has no falloff or distortion at any setting, and is also made extremely well.
>>
>>2835488
And for something a little less Rockwellian:

Fujifilm's XF 16-55mm f2.8 becomes the best quality general-purpose zoom for the X-mount system. It's hardly a controversial statement given the specification (not to mention the size and cost), but always reassuring to confirm it in practical tests.
In my optical tests with a distant subject, I found the XF 16-55mm delivered very good sharpness in the middle of the frame at all focal lengths even using the maximum f2.8 aperture. There's some softness in the very extreme corners, most visibly at 16mm and a little less so at 55mm, but move into the frame even just a little and it improves greatly. If you are shooting highly detailed scenes and can close the aperture to f5.6 or f8, the degree of detail and sharpness becomes very impressive.

The peak performance in my tests was around the 35mm (roughly 50mm equivalent) focal length where the results were sharp even in the extreme corners at f2.8. The weakest point was at 16mm where the corners were softest compared to other focal lengths and some coloured fringing was also visible. Luckily the fringing was easy to correct in RAW files, and again once the aperture was closed to f5.6 there was a high degree of detail across the entire frame.

Also, has weather sealing.

Summary: You'll never notice the difference between the Tamron and the Fuji in a final photograph, regardless of display size.

I'd also like to add the Tamron has basic weather sealing.
Thanks for all the info but it's a bit wasted on me I'm trying to decide between two super budget lenses haha.

I think I'm going to go with the 16-50 it's only 200g and 3.5 is plenty fast for walking around. I'm more worried about sharpness stopped down I'll be using it in the studio from time to time at 50 f8 when I CBA to drag Canon gear around

The 16-50 is great. It won't let you down.

The sharpness is very good, especially stopped down.

With Fuji files, you'll get a MUCH more dramatic jump in sharpness from picking the right processing program and learning to use it correctly than you will from jumping from a $200 lens to a $2000 lens.

The 16-50 is just as good as the 18-55. Ive owned both and stuck with the 16-50 for the wide end. Because of the barrel distortion, it's uncorrected fov is actually much wider than 24mm equiv. It's more like a 21mm on the wide end if you leave the barrel distortion, 24mm with Fiji correction profile.
The focusing is also faster in the 16-50 II than the 18-55 in my experience.

Fantastic, exactly what I wanted to hear, thanks anon! What sorts of speeds can you.

I've been using capture one for Fuji and Lightroom for my Canon rig I know there are a few that are a tad better but I like the capture one workflow.

What do you guys think of the OIS? What sorts of speeds can you hand-hold at 16mm?

What do you suggest? I don't have a Mac so no irridient. Photo ninja??

Absolutely Photo Ninja.

Holy shit. That's the difference between "Wow this is a great lens!" and "Holy fuck I paid way too much why the fuck did I fall for the meme and get into this system this camera sucks"

You'd think Fuji would do everything they could to fix it. Or at leas tell people... Like a little info card with every camera body.

For many people, the ability to pixel peep at 100% isn't as important as the lightroom interface, the ability to use camera profiles correctly, nice preset to speed up editing, etc.

A good color and contrast workflow will do a LOT more to benefit your final image than a bit more detail at 100%.

As of right now, there's no way to get your detail out of Photo Ninja and still get LR's camera profiles that emulate Fuji's film simulations.

After contacting PN support (Which is to say, Jim) to ask about a way, I got the following response:

>At some point I'd like to reverse engineer the Fuji looks (e.g. Velvia, Sensia), but I haven't gotten around to it yet. In the meantime, if you experiment with the Color Enhancement filter (and maybe the tone controls) a bit I'll bet you can get pretty close. It has quite a bit of ability to push/pull/nudge colors in different wedges of the color hue wheel. (If you have access to a Color Checker chart, you can shoot it with different color settings, then adjust the Color Enhancement & tone sliders until it matches the JPEG preview.)

So essentially, you get one or the other. And in most situations, one matters much more than the other as far as final image success is concerned.

i have:
afd 50mm 1.8
afd 20mm 2.8
afd 80mm 1.8
afs 35mm dx
kit 18-55

if I'll take the fuji, I'll miss my 20 and 35 so much. I love them.

I have like 2 days left before I can trade my X-Pro2 back in to the shop for a refund.

I'm thinking of downgrading to an X100T. Talk me out of it, or talk me into it.

Just help me decide what to do! I'm mainly interested in street photography.
