Bahaha, to be honest I failed at that. This is where tons of deer live so it was ironic that she was also picking plants to eat. Photo fails to represent that but it was the best photographically. Here's one with a deer in the shot that probably fits the irony a bit better. Would have been best if the deer was eating too. Definitely a stretch for sure...

Honestly the whole country is pretty fucking ugly in general. Most buildings are shitty and run down looking like in. That's kind of what I'm going for with a lot of these. Japan as a whole is extremely mundane from an architectural aesthetic point of view.

That's all of got of that 'style' for now. I've also been doing some high contrast black and white stuff going for a creepy vibe so here's a few of those to round out the thread.

Ugly is one thing but none of the photos ITT come close to even resembling the kind of epic urban decay and social maladaptation that characterizes America's proletariat ghettos, so if they are rundown by japanese standards (forgive me if i'm mistaking what you meant) then those are pretty crazy standards

I get what you're saying. There aren't urban decay areas in the same way as East St. Louis or Detroit, at least from what I've seen and understand about Japan. There are definitely poor areas with rows upon rows of depressing apartment blocks (think Soviet aesthetic) but there's nothing like Pruitt Igoe for example.

However, with the aging population here there are plenty of towns and villages where the average age is 70+ and everything is just slowly falling apart. These places aren't ghettos in the American sense, but they have their own aura of despair and death about them.

I posted this last image before a few months ago in a recent photo thread. So yeah, comments feedback about these images would be much appreciated. I plan to keep shooting both of these 'styles' and am moving to a major industrial area this summer so I'd like to hone my eye for the aesthetic predominant in the beginning of this thread especially.

I think some of these work, some don't. You're clearly going for a style emphasizing clear lines, symmetries and structures.

>>2831881
This could be good if you had payed more attention to symmetry. Everything's a little off.

>>2831882
There's too much in the frame. I can see lots of lines, but nothing really dominant and eye-catching. No real subject, but many, confusingly equal objects.

>>2831885
The reflection really breaks the abstraction. Too bad.

>>2831886
I see what you did there, but I really don't like it. Not enough abstraction and it feels crammed.

>>2831887
Could have been good if you had chosen to take create more parallel lines and a flat image.

>>2831888
This is probably the only one I'd take as is. Nice composition with clear symmetry and breaks of the former.

>>2831889
>>2831891

I don't think there's really a way to make any one of these work. Especially the latter.

>>2831898
Maybe take a step back as to not cut into you subject. Otherwise quite good, actually. Could have done without the person.

>>2831916
I think you've done everything you could with this, but it's still not really interesting.

I don't really enjoy the rest at all and I really think your post could use some work. Most of your colors are pretty muddy.

But I think this has some potential and you should really keep at it.

Hey Mule, thanks for the feedback! Super useful to hear what's working for other people. I agree with a lot of what you mentioned, especially the abstraction part. I think these images need either one of two things: more abstraction or the inclusion of people. I might take the latter route and try to shoot this aesthetic while including people in the frame to add a sense of life to the photos.

In regards to your comment on colors, how would you punch them up? The bulk of these were shot mid-day in harsh sun so the muddy colors are the result of the light and relatively high humidity. I was under the assumption the color palette hints at the warmth and humidity but again, I'm biased since I shot these.

I feel like whatever it was you were trying to convey, or whatever stylistic choice you were making, it didn't come through very much. A lot of these pictures don't have anything to look at.

There's just nothing that draws the eye.

It seems to me you were trying to tell stories and that they didn't come through. My personal favourite from the thread is >>2831933 because I can imagine a story behind it. I immediately though of those stairs as some ancient samurai stairs on some mountain-top with a temple.

I like your 'creepy' photos as you call them, >>2831949 particularly is quite eerie. I'd be careful with high contrast though, they look good on screen but if you ever print >>2831954 out you will have literally more than 50% of the image at pitch-blackness, and it's not very flattering. I would suggest attempting to tone it down just enough that detail isn't completely erased, see if you still like it that way.

Of course, what is most important is that you like what you shoot. I just went and show a whole lot of nothing around my village in 30-years expired colour film. The experience of taking pictures is the real treat of photography really.

Thanks for the awesome comments! You're correct in saying I'm going for some sort of storytelling through these images. I've been reflecting on your comment since last night and I've concluded the story I'm trying to tell is that of daily life in typical Japan. The majority of images from Japan depict a-typical Japan: beautiful temples and geishas or hyper-busy Tokyo, Osaka, etc. The bulk of Japan, the in-between of those two extremes, is rarely represented and this is what I am hoping to focus on. Looking back at these I see most totally failed and I think the reason is the lack a human element. I was focusing on setting the 'stage' and firing the shutter once it was set. Perhaps this is why there's nothing to draw the eye as you suggested. These photos are empty stages. In a series I think a few empty stage photos can work, but the bulk of them need people. I'm looking to work by Alec Soth, Bryan Shutmaat, Jake Stangel, and Fred Herzog for inspiration.

Thanks for your comments on the 'creepy' photos and potential problems with printing. I'll keep that in mind and dial back the contrast a bit! The particular idea was a thing I started when I was always getting off work after dark yet still wanting to shoot. Now I'm thinking I can focus on the former image story during the day and the latter at night.

Totally agree what's most important is to like what you shoot. I'm personally rarely satisfied with my images hence me looking for critique to really dial in my ideas and ways of shooting. For the past few years I've rarely even revisited photos after I shot them. I have 15 rolls of film to develop, 50+ to scan, and a couple thousand digital images I haven't even looked at. I've been enjoying just shooting but I think it's time for me to start looking back and critiquing myself to improve my photography.

Thanks again for the comment, super helpful. I'm thinking I may dust off my Bronica to shoot this stuff.

Once again - this is a classic case of /p/ jealousy and autism.

One more tip anon-kun, when presenting a story (for example life in typical Japan), it's important that you say what the story is beforehand because it puts everything into context.

Also: go through those shots man! You're bound to find things that you like. I recently looked at my old photos and I found quite a few gems, despite the noticeably lesser technique, knowledge & experience.

I eagerly await another thread from you with a presentation of daily Japan.

This one has a lot of potential, the security guard plus the empty space around him really tells a story. It needs adjustment in post to really work tho, like the other anon said the symmetry is a bit off

These all look like you were looking for excuses to use your camera. Almost entirely nothing at all in these shots. No subjects, no interesting LACK of subjects, no meaningful or notable composition, no processing to talk about... I feel like my time was wasted.

It's difficult to give more critique because I'm not sure what your goals were, so it's hard to help you achieve them.
>>
>>2833228
If you think the photos are awful, you'd think they were awful no matter what gear they used. Stop being a gearfag.
>>
>>2832879
Good tip, thanks again. I'm sure I have tons of shots that are keepers. Unfortunately all of my negatives are 8,000km away so I'll have to wait a few years before scanning them. I just shot some stuff I'm pretty excited about today on medium format keeping some things mentioned in this thread in mind!

>>2833069
I shot it purposefully asymmetrical. The sign on the left carries more weight than the cone on the right but the right also has the building and powerlines adding more weight to it. Do you feel more of the right needs to be cropped away?

>>2833228
Tell me why they suck without mentioning gear plz

Kinda true honestly. I posted what I was going for with these photos here if you'd be down for critiquing them. >>2832837

>>2833277
Yeah I don't get comments like that. Cameras are just tools that all do the same basic things. Pick one that works for you and go with it imo...
