I'm finding the branch in front of her is distracting, otherwise it's nice.
>>2827316
heres another...
I'm pretty disappointed in the lighting, granted it was during the afternoon, my homemade reflector didn't work out very much.
>>2827322
Yea there should be more light on her face. It's an otherwise nice photo, in my opinion.
>>2827322
well that's because her arm is in the way of the sun
I've printed maybe half of the decent ones.
I think I did okay
Its not that the photos are bad by any standards of composition, contrast, printing, etc. I just don't think she's a very good model. The subject of pics like these have to bring their own energy to the table. They aren't just posing. You have to kind of think of them like actors. And you have to direct them like actors or else you won't get any results. These shots are weak because it doesn't really seem like she's into it.
Its also your job to suss out how she can bring out elements of her own energy in the photograph and to make her feel comfortable being photographed. Sessions like these aren't just one way. Its a collaboration. You've gotta find someone who's into getting their picture taken and will have their own ideas of how to pose and what to do, just like you'll have ideas of how to take the shot. You both can build from there.
You can search your area for amateur models easily on modelmayhem or craigslist. Or, maybe, a local theater. Actors and other performers love having their picture taken and usually bring a good energy, in my experience.
>>2827354
Yeah it was rough directing her, I mainly showed her pictures to mimic...
thanks alot
>>2827322
What you used as a reflector?
>>2827366
>tinfoil covered cardboard
That's probably going to be pretty harsh, and therefore should be very apparent if it were on the subject. I'm surprised that isn't making a bigger difference to your shadows, so probably your assistant is not actually reflecting the light AT the subject.... or isn't IN the light and therefore isn't reflecting it.
You might find it easier to get a huge chunk of something white, that way you don't have to direct it so much as just put it in the sun and near the subject.
>>2827315
Take this constructively, these are bad so I'm trying to help.
>obscured by blurry shit in front of subject instead of behind
This is bad. Particularly the bottom half, is that non-blurry big flat tan thing an ugly leaf? It doesn't even match the other foreground elements because it's not blurred, makes it look like her left arm is elephantitis mutated.
No eyes and lips hidden both make it less glamorous and more difficult to connect with. A problem when her and some blurry bush are all that's in the photo.
>>2827322
Gross. Her elbow looks as wide as her head because of perspective and is posed horribly.
If the right (viewer) elbow was to the side off frame she could still have a hand in her hair without that terrible shape (Is the huge elbow size also from a wide angle lens? Portraits should be shot with 70mm+ usually, for safety from extremely ugly distortions of body size that wide angle makes)
The hair itself in this shot isn't styled or posed pleasantly. It's just flat and tons of forehead showing, and a hand and a lifeless bunch of hair being held off the side.
Her facial expression is just boredom. It's not anger, not grief, not some shy or teasing or anything interesting in this one. The light on her face is completely flat and 2d, since you haven't applied any directional light successfully and you haven't gotten ample fill either.
Her waist is one of the only areas hit by interesting light, but her shirt isn't a smooth curve there or something, it's just rumpled. Then no information for 80% of her chest.
A lifeless bland shot might be fine for historical photojournalism, but this photo doesn't seem to document any event whatsoever other than "hey look this way and grab your hair"
When you've got a very plain geometry subject to work with, you're going to need good poses, expressions and lighting to give some interest.
>>2827340
less horrible. solid 4/10 maybe. Pose isn't completely destructive. Lighting isn't bad. Foreground better than #1
>>2827322
one off-camera flash is the minimum I'd go with, then reflector as optional 2nd light.

Funny how different people are.
This shit puts me to sleep.
I think you should work on your technical skills before attempting portraiture, or any serious photoshoots.
These are all super ugly tonality-wise, and the lighting is fine so I know its your fault.
Grey, flat, muddy, and blurry (not soft, but blurry). The blurry part might be your scanner, but give some more information about what you're shooting, developing, printing (I'm assuming optical prints?) and scanning with, and maybe we can help.
>>2828888
Lol this post ended up sounding kind of harsh, I'm not actually trying to put you down anon.
I can't comment on your skills as an portrait artist because I don't shoot portraits, but when the aesthetics of an image are poor, it doesn't matter how good you are at depicting the model.
>>2828888
nice quads
>>2827315
As someone who generally likes funky exposure fashion style work, I find this to look really really nice. If you had made the decisions on purpose, I would be very impressed. If you ended up with this look on accident, well, you got lucky, because it looks a lot like something you'd find in a Treats, or P magazine, or some such (minus the sex appeal)
I disagree that you shouldn't leave stuff in the way of your model as some people have said. If it's a senior portrait trying to show how much she likes Soccer, yeah, it's in the way, but if it's an environmental shot of a girl in some plants, you've done well. It all depends on your personal goals.
>>2827467
My assistant didn't know what she was doing, neither did I apparently so light wasn't properly directed. I like the white sheet idea thanks
>>2827487

Hey there anon,
I am using a 50mm 1,4 f for all of my portrait photography. You dont HAVE to use a 85mm or anything like the other anon said but you have to be aware of the distortions. Stuff thats in the front will appear bigger. And normally you want the face and eyes of your model to appear bigger, not her elbow. So you have to make sure the bodypart you want to lay emphasis on is the one nearest to your camera.
>>2827315
I like it. I dont think the blurry branches in the front are distracting, they are framing her face and would direct the attenton to it if it werent for the giant white area that is her arm. Typically, if you are doing portraits, the face is the most important part. So it should be the brightest spot in the photo, because that it what you eyes are drawn to first.
But overall, I really like the mood of this picture, she is facing away, not paying attention to the camera so "hiding" behind these branches is kinda nice and adding to the mood.
>>2827322
The elbow is the brightest point, it also is horribly distorted and almost a huge as her head. A huge distraction for your brain. The first thing viewers are going to look at is the elbow, not the face. It should be the other way around.
Also, the lightning in her face is way off. It is coming from below. There is a reason people put flashlights under their face to scare someone. It is just creepy. Avoid it.
We are used to light coming from above so it makes us uneasy if its not.
You used your reflector incorrectly. You should´ve directed the sunlight slightly above her head not under it.
What I like about this are the catchlights in her eyes and the overall composition. But the lighting and her pose are shit, sry anon.
>>2827340
This one would be nice if it weren´t for the branch trough her face and leaf mustache.
Also, tell her to arch her back next time and don´t cover her waist with her arm (makews her look fat).
Unless you are giong for the "extremely shy and uncomfortable" look.
Did these the other day...

So I should stick with my 50mm lens, use a better reflector, using it to imitate natural light. got it.
how can I avoid distortions but also get the pose in >>2827322 ?
serious thanks anon
>>2829486
This is a nice pose, but you chopped her hand. Nice job keeping her hair on the sunny side to give it highlights, and also to give the face more even lighting. What kills it is her squinting.
>>2829487
this one is pretty nice, but a little too close for 50mm. The distortion is noticeable to me. Nice use of fill lighting. I like the way you framed her and the background with the trees.
>>2829488
I could have done without the thing on the bottom. I might have changed the angle a bit so you could see the rest of her ass.
For all of these, I would say more retouching. There are blemishes on her face, tons of really distracting fly-aways in her hair. and those lug nuts in the last one should be removed. It's very easy to do retouching, just experiment with the spot removal and patch tools. Just don't go super overboard, keep things looking natural.
The focus is wrong with these two.
>>2829487
should be on the eye in the front. But nice portrait otherwise.
>>2829488
1/60sec with 50mm is risky this might be the reason its blurry. double the focal lenght to be safe. 1/100sec should be ok.
The Mark II can easily tolerate a higher ISO than 400. Its better to up the ISO than to cut back on exposure time.
>>2829486
Some things already mentioned - don't crop off fingers, and avoid her squinting. A subtle squint can look great, definitely better than deer in the headlights which inexperienced models tend to do. One minor thing I would also add is moving the camera slightly right so her head is within the dark foliage, framing her and making her stand out a bit more.

Yes! But I forgot to mention: If its a clody day or you are in the shade, unsing the reflector the way you dig, (From below) isn´t bad. Your goal is to fill out the shadows under her eyes to make them brighter.
But on a sunny day with harsh backlight it is just too much, if the point under the chin or under the nose is the brightest spot on the face you did it wrong.
The elbow on her right is fine. Its the one to her left thats distorted. Its ponting straight at the camera. You should make her pont it down or outward. Gerneral rule: If it looks like a blob and not the bodypart its supposed to be position it farther away from the camera and try to lenghten it until it is no blob no more.

I'll post a shot without her squinting (as much) it was extremely bright, and I had someone holding a white posterboard to bounce light onto the subject.

I'm purchasing a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 once I sell another lens. I would use that focal length a lot in the types of photos I take.
We were at that spot for less than 10 minutes because it started to rain on us, so I tried to get a few shots before getting out of there. Definitely going to use that spot again because it had a lot of potential composition wise.
>>2829498
I noticed the focus issue once I got back to edit the photos. Looking at a replacement for my Canon 50mm f/1.4 because I don't like the focus ring. Most likely going to switch to Rokinon's 50mm f/1.4 since I only use manual focus.

A few distracting elements - the dark line above/right of her head, the fence in the background, the aforementioned nuts/bolts, the foreground out of focus blob (fence post) is too prominent imo.
Minor re-framing could avoid most of those, get slightly lower and to the right - bearing in mind I have no idea what else was at the location.
I do agree with the comment about including more of her body, but we don't know what is behind her.

Hey anon, I'm the poster above you with the black borders...your pictures are very weak, but not for the reason you may think. Though some of the other posters are bringing up good points, those aren't exactly what you should be focusing on. For example, you are using a MKII with a great 50mm 1.4 lens - basically the same set up as mine, if you boosted that ISO for that one shot or did not crop out her fingers it wouldn't of made the image look much better...you are too wrapped up with all those technical minorities you forget you're shooting a person. By that I mean try to capture real motions, movements and expression. A good portrait requires connection between the subject and the photographer and I'm not seeing any of that. Photograph them running, out of breath, looking out a window, reading, basically anything but just "posing" them pretty and looking directly at the camera

I love everything about this photo, colors, mood, styling of the model...
But that pose is shit anon. She looks like a midget. Her hips are pointed towards the camera. Same with the shoes. Did you want to emphasize her belly and feet? I dont think so, because they aren´t in focus. The face is.
I don´t try to be mean, I really love this shot, its a pity the pose is so weird.
What I think might have helped with that:
Ask her to lean her face and upper body towards the camera. make her strech those legs or, if you can, try to shoot your model from above slightly (makes her double chin disappear, too). Just make sure the main focal point (face, the book/hands) are placed the nearest to your camera. Hips (and belly) should be placed farther away from the camera, nobody wants to see that part of their body highlighted. Same goes for shoes/thighs. If they are not the focus, try to make them look thinner by streching them / placing them away from the camera.
>>2829556
What the fuck are you talking about? She's reading a fucking book in front of a fucking window. It's a natural pose given the situation and it looks fine. This ain't some self-masturbatory pseudo-intellectual avante garde bullshit photoshoot.
>>2829556
>styling of the model
This wasn't a fashion photoshoot, she's just in her own clothing & it wasn't posed; this was a genuine moment, I don't mind her position at all but I suppose it's up to opinion.
However you're really objectifying & trivializing the subject, this portrait wasn't taken for the purpose of glamour. A portrait serves many other purposes than to make an individual look as attractive as possible. Also your suggestions are a bit amateurish - I'm not say that out of spite, but by suggesting I pose her to lean towards the camera will make the entire pose even more awkward, by shooting slightly above her (for the sake of making her 'look' better) I lose that towering presence/aura, by making her stretch her legs I lose my vertical composition (which is how I prefer to shoot) and I lose my foreground in addition to the fact shooting horizontal brings in additional pointless whites and other meaningless texture of the room (that you currently cannot see) to my photograph.
I'm on my phone and I don't have the best vocabs but what I'm trying to convey is that great critiques should avoid the whole "you should have done X" as what you're essentially doing is taking the liberty away from others and how they prefer to shoot over subjectivity & instead just focus on more objective missteps.
tl;dr the photograph achieved its purpose and is fine
>>2829583
Yeah, I wasn´t aware that the "you should..." explanation was kinda hurtful. But now I can see why. I didn´t mean that you absolutely have to follow these steps. I can see now that this phrasing sounds like I think am better than you, but I really didn´t mean it that way and I am sorry.
I just wanted to explain what I would have done differently. Instead of just saying: "The models pose sucks!" I wanted to give some suggestions how I would fix the things I pointed out as "problems".
I still think that if you use a 50mm lens you should compensate for the distortion with properly posing the model or yourself to avoid skewed proportions and making the body look weird.
Next time I´ll try to explain it in a less patronizing way.

you weren't very specific on your technique, but I can only guess that you overexposed and/or underdeveloped the negatives, then tried to compensate in printing, along with possibly using too low of a paper grade?
I suggest double checking your development time and temperature, and once you get a normal development, then make some straight contact proofs of your negatives to check the exposure

I feel like this would have been better if she was facing the sun and you had your back to the sun.
Guys, just because you're taking pictures of cute tweeny girls in wooded areas on nice sunny days doesn't make your photos good. You can't just think about subject and location. You have to think about focal length, light, the way shadows are projected (time of day of the shoot), The weather that day, developing (in the case of film), processing in post, colors in frame, how those colors can potentially be manipulated in post, etc. Also, you can't just get away with using your kit lens or nifty fifty. Actually try thinking about how focal length effects the image and compresses space.
All these outdoor pics seem like they're taken out of convenience on nice days when you just happened to be out anyway. Good photography doesn't happen willy nilly. You go to the place to do tests, meter if necessary, really get a feel for it, and then go back until it feels like you've done it right.
how about something different?

This photo is great for many reasons. I'd like to see it in a full format.

Both of these just make her look fat. First one is okay. Invest in something in the 80mm range. You can also see too much of her caked makeup, either chose more flattering lighting or edit that. This one >>2829513 in particular is unflattering as fuck and it doesn't seem like you're going for harsh realism otherwise.
>>2829500
The hair on her arms and them being crossed actually looks really nice her in contrast with her saint like face and expression.
>>2829512
Honestly I was going to say something about the acne scars but all of her imperfections really make this one interesting. Would like a clearer look at her without the hands. Beautiful expression though.

Thank you for the insight. That's the main issue I am having with portraiture work is capturing that feeling. I'm confident in taking technically good looking photos (lighting, editing, etc) but posing the models is where I'm struggling, a lot. They end up looking like senior photos, which is something I'd like to get into since it's easy money, but I've yet to charge for a shoot since I'm not 100% confident in all aspects of portraiture work.
I've got another photoshoot this Friday with a couple of girls, and I'll try to use all the tips from this thread to help make those photos.
Here's a photo from a past shoot that shows some emotion, not technically perfect, but I still like it.

If you read any of my responses you would realize I'm going to get a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4. Can't wait to get that amazing piece of glass.

ok kid
had a shoot yesterday, it was way too rushed, had no time, got 3 photos I could bother editing, model liked them so that was nice.. I don't, I feel I could've done way better with the lighting and framing. anyway heres one.

Yes. When you go out and shoot for about two hours or so you get a lot of photos....
Yes I'll post another one from a different location. We took the one I'm posting in the street while police were staring at us.

Somebody is angry for no reason, and pointing out problems in the photo that aren't that big of an issue. That shot was taken when I made her laugh, I decided to keep it because it showed some genuine emotion from the moment. Also that day was extremely windy and her dress kept blowing around.

No doubt at all about that statement, I wasn't being hyper critical on myself. I could easily narrow it down to 10 photos, but that's not what I wanted to do. I did this shoot for free, as all my other shoots, and wanted to give her the option to choose whatever ones she wanted for her social media.
From the 314 photos I took that day, 43 in my opinion were worth editing, and from those 43, only like 10 or so were like "great" ones.

>>2833771
I don't care about her, she's some girl I used to go to high school with that I NEVER spoke to, hit her up on Instagram seeing if she was interested in free portraits, of course she said yes.
And how the hell are your critiques advice for a better photo?
>those horse gums
That's her full smile, you can't change that. The only thing I could've done, and did, was to tell her to change her expression on her face, for example >>2833657
>rim of glasses over eyes
This was an okay critique because that's something that's easily prevented, but also not choosing that photo also prevents that. Like I said before, I liked the true emotion in the shot.
>that bra
She changed her outfit half-way though, so that was prevented, but how does that make it a bad photo if that's her style?
>crusty elbow skin
I could've easily spot-corrected it like I did to a huge bruise that was on her arm in most shots, but why would I take the extra time to? It's not going to take the photo from "okay" to "great" just because that minor skin flaw is gone. Also it's not like these photos are going to be printed, or viewed at 100%. They will be viewed at 1000x667 or smaller, making that small of an edit is essentially pointless, except to you who nitpicks.
I'm genuinely curious to see your portraiture work please.

I wanna meet that dad
>>2836710
i wonder what that dad's like.
Any tips on posing the hands and arms? I always have no idea how to direct their limbs for maximum sexage
>>2839632
Generally good to have them doing something. Interact with the wardrobe, or the environment. It really depends on the shot you're going for though. Formal low-energy stuff, you can cross the arms, or put hands in pockets, or be leaning on something supporting weight with hands or elbows.
It helps to shift your mindset about portraits in general. Stop thinking about it as "try to get a nice picture of this person" and focus more on "try to get a nice photo of the person showing who they are, or what they do, or what their personality is" which allows for interaction and dynamic posing.
Trying to take a photo of Jeff? What are you trying to communicate about him? Is it that he's playful and cool? Make him do something that's playful and cool. Is it that he's aggressive and stern? Pick a pose that matches that.
>>2829464
