Film General Thread, aka FGT.
>just posting in the FGT doesn't make you gay, unless you shoot zenit
This is the thread for all of your stupid film questions, and to post your film snapshits without flushing them down the RPToilet.
It's OK to ask about film gear in this thread.

Which is the most affordable film right now? I mean the one you can go to a shop and just buy. I've been using Fujicolor c200
>>
>>2820365
That's such a regional-specific question. There's no point in asking that unless you provide more details. Last place I lived had a store that sold bulk rolled Kodak 200 stuff for $2/roll. Place I live now has a store that sell some Lomo c41 for $2.50 a roll.

Provia 400 is pretty amazing film for snapshitting as well.
Would love to shoot it in MF.
I hope your E100VS has held up better than mine though.

As far as new film, at full price, in retail stores, you're pretty much there, bb.
Only HP5 has come close in my experience.
Buying Slovenian shit like Foma online may be cheaper, but who cares.

I tried DSLR scanning and the amount of detail I got is so much better than what I got from the expensive lab scans.

However I am struggling with the color correction part. I have done this a couple other times and I got ok results. I think one of the problems in this case might be that the backlight was uneven (thus the color gradient from yellow to blue in the 3rd pic.), and that I probably underexposed when scanning the negative.

How can you tell while you're scanning that you are properly exposing the negative?

Check yo histogram. Expose to the right. Scanning colour negs is easy because they're not contrasty.
What's most important though is ensuring perfectly even illumination across the frame.

I have an awful scanning technique at the moment using a homemade rig. And thats pretty substantial crop from the whole negative so the grain is much more visible.

different example, just a snapshot, but I suppose a better scan.

Asked this in the gear thread, but how does anyone with a big MF SLR kit carry their gear around? My generic camera bag couldn't really handle the body/lenses/backs/tripod loadout when I visited a garden recently.

I use a cheap amazon basics camera backpack. It holds my rz67 with a 90mm, a 180mm, metered prism, polaroid back, filters, a meter, and a few rolls, plus I strap an over sized L-grip on the outside in the bungees. it's 20 bucks, pic related.

They aren't exceptionally sturdy, or big, but it holds enough stuff for going to and from places. otherwise I just take it out, mount it on the tripod or the L-grip, and just walk around. I'll slip the spare lens and the meter into my shoulder bag, along with my digital.

I got a bottle :3
Picked it up in JPY.
Can only imagine how 2 x 1 Litre bottles of fix and dev, as well as a stainless dev tank and reels must have looked on the X-ray, but I got through...

I think there have been a lot of issues with shipping these concentrated devs, related to their strongly alkaline nature and a change in regulations with some big carriers, so some work is going into repackaging them to be compliant.

So I got a Canoscan LIDE 600f with a 35mm adapter and Vue Scan.
Vue Scan wont make previews or scans ONLY in transparency mode.
Halp me /p/ please cause I would rather not DSLR scan 325 negatives.

DSLR scanning is faster, noob.
Again, re: Japan thread, I scanned all of my 35mm B&W at the same time; I just checked the exif and scans No:34 and No. 361 are less than 2 hours apart, and I'm pretty sure that included a break for dinner.

I do prefer DSLR scanning but it personally takes me less that a minute per frame on the canon for low res, good for posting online straight outta the scanner.

I eventually figured out canons shitty software so I don't need vuescan now.

Also, those pics from a the ja/p/an thread are sick, thanks for sharing

In practice thats what I ended up doing as well. The body remained on the tripod, and I swapped lenses and backs as needed, but that required me using areas in my bag that weren't protected/padded. Luckily the gardens weren't massive. Thanks for the input.

Found this Minolta x300 with sigma zoom lens in a thrift store yesterday for 5 euro.

I have never shot on film before and I wasn't planning too either but the camera looked nice.

So any advice for a complete beginner? I will begin with buying some batteries and check if it still works, kek.

>So any advice for a complete beginner?

Set the ISO dial to match the speed of the film you're using. DON'T "PUSH" YOUR FILM.
When you're loading the film, make sure you wind on at least one full crank of the lever's worth of film before you close the back, so you know it's started. Then, take up the slack inside the film canister by turning the rewin crank in the direction of the arrow until you start to feel some tension.
Close the back.
Now, as you fire the shutter and advance the film to frame 1, you should see the rewind crank turn at the same time, giving you positive confirmation that the film is being drawn out of the canister.
Finally if the camera has automatic exposure modes, USE THEM.
When you're up to frame 37/8/9, you will encounter resistance when you try to wind on the next frame. DON'T FORCE IT. You're done. Rewind the film all the way, and take the film to get developed.
>congrats you avoided every rookie error
>>
>>2821280
First test to see the camera works. Might want to shoot a test roll too to check for stuff like possibly misaligned back plate (properly focused photos are out of focus). Then toss the zoom into the junk pile and get a Minolta standard lens, f/1.7 50mm and f/2 45mm MD Rokkors are good, the former also has the spinning bokeh effect when wide open if you're into that sort of stuff, the latter is somewhat sharper. Commonly found on Ebay for around 50 bucks. Start out with Kodak Gold/Ultramax or Fuji Superia 200/400, move on to more expensive films like Portra only once you sort of know what you're doing.

I recently order a few things and a couple of films on top to get free shipping.
They are Superia X-Tra 800 and Superia 1600.
The thing is I don't plan on using them until June/July, so I stored them in the fridge.
Now the problem is that relative humidity in the fridge varies from 70% to 90%. Will this negatively affect the negatives if they will only be stored for 2 to 2 and a half months?
>>
Got an old roll of colour fuji film from a friend. Its at least 15 years old, and haven't been refrigerated. Is it a waste to shoot it? Any tips with expired film?
>>
>>2821371
You can use sealable plastic bags like those airport security-approved ones if you want to be sure to keep the moisture out. That said, I just keep the rolls in their containers and stash them in an old ice cream box, and it seems to be working just fine, the containers are fairly airtight (an old scout trick for keeping matches dry was stashing them in film roll containers).

Superia 800 and 1600 are mushy as fuck anyway, not much you can do to make them any worse.
>>
>>2821371
Shit, misread, thought you were using a freezer. I don't recommend keeping film in the fridge, and besides what's the point when you might as well use a freezer? Thawing frozen film takes very little time either way. Also, if you bought fresh rolls, they should have more than enough use by date to last in room temperature for just a couple months. >>2821395
>>
>>2821336

>>2821371
you can seal it in a plastic bag or container so the fridge's humidity is irrelevant, unless you plan on keeping it next to your breakfast, duh
>>2821379
overexpose 2 stops, 1 if you want a "old family photos" vibe to your images. rule of thumb is overexpose 1 stop (box iso/2)for every 10 years, none if it's been frozen/refridgerated. More if kept in warm places/climates/the higher the film's base iso (low iso films keep better, b/w films keep better, c41 colour films keep worse). Not a waste to shoot it, expect bigger grain, wonky colour balance (the latter fixable in post). Don't forget to post results on /p/ and don't be a snapshitter.

That's a 50mm 1.8 attached to an extension tube.

Basically a source of light as even as possible, the monitor is the only thing that comes as close to this right now.

Then in that picture the film is taped to a piece of glass, but I plan on buying a film holder for scanners so the film will be easier to handle.

Also make sure the film is a couple inches away from the screen so the pixels are out of focus.

>High humidity can promote mold growth and ferrotyping. Low humidity can create static marks when printing or cause buckling due to uneven moisture loss. Exposed film, particularly color film, deteriorates more rapidly than unexposed film.

I guess it depends on how long you have it stored and other factors such as extreme humidity.

Hi /p/ I saw a couple of used cameras and am wondering which one should I buy?
>Ricoh Xr-5 with a Riconar 55mm f2 ($65)
or
>Pentax p30t with a vivitar 35-70mm ($50)
I have a DSLR but wanted a good ol' film camera to start. What do you guys think?
>>
>>2821704
none, go in a thrift store and pick a good camera up for about 5$ no joke
>>
>>2821715
I think those are the best prices I can get regardless of he model (I'm not in the US) I'll keep searching then, but IF those were the options is any better than the other? Or they are really complete garbage?
>>
>>2821727
If you really have to ask, go for the pentax with zoom. If you know you want to be stuck with one focal length sure, go for the ricoh.
>>
>>2821704
Don't know about the Ricoh, but the first thing you need to do with the Pentax is to throw that piece of shit zoom into the trash bin and buy a decent prime, or at least a zoom that isn't Vivitar. So you might as well double the price for it, you'll be wasting film on a horrible cheap zoom lens.
>>
>>2821704
The Ricoh KR-5 is a very barebones camera with limited functionality (limited selection of shutter speeds) and a crude match-needle metering display. It's definitely not worth anywhere near $65, if you really insist on a full manual camera with uncoupled match needle metering, get a Praktica MTL. The Pentax comes with a crappy 3rd party zoom lens.

I don't know why you keep doing it, but please stop recommending people buy Prakticas.
They are fucking awful cameras.

Newish to film - all my negs have been sleeves by the lab, but now I'm putting them all in organized binders. The sheets I bought say "inswrt emulsion side down" - how can you tell?

I've been putting them in so they "read" correctly on the page - the film data is legible and oriented the way I remember taking the shot (if I can). Is that right? What's the danger if they go in emulsion side up?

Pic related, me squinting at negatives.

The emulsion side is the one that doesn't shine, the matte one.
>I've been putting them in so they "read" correctly on the page [...] Is that right?
It is right.
>>
>>2822126
I've read more on this and I think I'll opt for the SB-22 due to it's size and >20€
Also I said it doesn't swivel but it actually rotates although not like the SB-24.
For the price I guess it seems to be a good flash to start.
>>
>>2822708

The SB 24 is much more powerful and versatile, with full zoom and swivel functions, has a very useful led scale on the back that shows your range for a given aperture and ISO when using manual flash, and offers rear curtain sync and strobe functions. It can also be triggered with a PC cable, for use with older or larger format cameras.

All that said though, if you're just using it to blast head on flash at people with a 35-50mm lense on a normal camera, smaller is usually more convenient.

Discussion: What's your favorite film to use and why?

I personally really like Lomo CN 800. It has a reasonable amount of grain and very warm tones. Their 400 is pretty egh, it's very easy to saturate the tones on 400, although I'm not sure why it is.
Runner up would be Ultramax 400.

Pic is 800, I really like it even though it's trash.

I think I got the negative better exposed now.
This is from my first roll which I had a cheap lab make me 10x15 prints of.
I tried two different methods for processing the negatives so I could compare them to the original print.

From left to right: Negative > Original print > Photoshop (Invert+auto color and playing with other adjustments) > Lightroom (Inverting RGB curves one by one and playing with other adjustments)

I still have to get consistent on the processing part and improving some aspects of my scanning setup but so far I'm happy with the results although they can vary depending on your method but I guess this proves that it's not that hard to get fairly acceptable results with little practice.

What part of dedicated macro lense eludes you people?
Think about the nature of the photographic task you're trying to achieve.
You want precise rendition of microscopic particles of silver on a flat plane at 1:1 magnification. That's something you need a specialised lense for.

Finally got around to busting the plastic mount obstruction off the back of my EF-S 10-22mm and trying it on a film EOS.
Just took some snapshits to see what it would do.
Worked perfectly.
This is at about 13 mm, which is as wide as it will go before the mirror comes into contact with the rear element.
No vignetting at other focal lengths or focusing distances.
Gets a bit smeary towards the absolute corners if you're not stopped down, but f/16 clears it up.

If you have this lense, you should definitely do this.

A 1L liquid kit is the best way to start.
Don't be too concerned about the 'working life' of your chemicals, just keep them in the dark in appropriately sized sealed containers and you'll be fine.
I use Mocconna jars.
Once you take control of the dev process, you'll be a little more likely to shoot film anyway, as it makes it so much cheaper and easier when you cut out the middle man, so you'll get through the film you need to use it up.

You lucky Fuck! The I went to poundland a few times and bought the lot. It's Agfa Vista 200 and comes indavidualy boxed but they lay them in their packaging box so theres 100 in a card box. Sometimes it's got a girl on the individual boxes sometimes not. Sometimes it's branded AGFA on the actual canister sometimes it's a unbranded magenta roll that reminds m of boots brand film,
>>
So today I shot three rolls of some "Kodacolor VR Plus 200" that I got for the support of 0.75$ each, the expiry date for the three rolls is 12/2007 so I shot it as ISO 100 film, should I specify this when getting the film developed in a local lab?

This is a 100% crop. In this case I used a 35-70mm 3.3 nikkor zoom lens for convenience that Ken lists as one of the worst lenses made by nikon. This and a 27.5mm extension tube, although I'd usually use my 50mm 1.8 instead of the zoom for better results.

In my opinion even using a lens like this produces relatively acceptable results.
I'm just posting these as a complete beginner in DSLR scanning (this is literally the third time I've done it) to encourage other anons that may be thinking about trying this, and that with little equipment you can produce ok results to post your snaps in 4chan.

I made the decision to start shooting film a few weeks ago, asked the guy at the camera store what he had under $50, and got the Zenit EM. I love it, but the shutter curtain doesn't always close all the way, leading to stuff like this.

I brought it back to the store and they said since I hadn't had it more than a week, I could return it for something else, but I like how it feels in my hands. Is there something I could lubricate to make the shutter close more easily?
>>
>>2825404
>but I like how it feels in my hands
Your hands have turned gay, cut them off.
But seriously, have you never even touched another camera before?
They are literally all better then the Zenit.
Get a refund, or throw it in the trash; either option is better than continuing to waste film in it.
Ebay any working Japanese SLR younger than you are with a 50mm. Success

Maybe there's better options, but I already feel attached to it. It's old and temperamental, but that's part of why I wanted to start playing with film. Once the shutter's working properly, I think it'll be great. Especially because the camera is helping me become a better photographer by forcing me to carefully think about what I'm doing before every single shot. Years of digital photography have made me lazy (case in point). If the photography itself isn't good, why bother spending money on a nicer camera? Better to keep it simple until I master the basics.

What anons are probably advising is getting a better manual SLR - you don't have to jump the gun and go straight for something electronic. Look, I get you, deeply so - first shot a roll through a Zenit (model irrelevant, they're all virtually identical in every way), but then got a Praktica for more shutter speeds (1s-1/1000) and even though I still love and adore the blocky brickish Zenit there is absolutely no reason to put film it it anymore, given how inferior in every way it is to the praktica. Heavier, with a smaller, worse focusing screen, less shutter speeds, terribad viewfinder coverage (something you should look into when composing your shots, btw).

If you've the chance to get a m42 SLR with a metal shutter, do it. The cloth courtains in Zenits are a ticking timebomb of failure and sadness.

>when you find out the anon recommending prakticas was just the inbred slovenian tripfag all along
I have about 50 cameras, including a Zenit EM, a Praktica IV and an MTL5. The only reason I haven't thrown them in the bin is my fear that a crosseyed dirt-farmer like you would dig them out of the trash and return them into circulation to hurt more people.
If you must use M42 lenses, at least shoot them on a Pentacks or Fuji.
>>
>>2825404
>Better to keep it simple until I master the basics.
Then toss the Zenit and get a Praktica MTL, it's basically the same thing except better at everything. Aside from being mechanically faulty, Zenits have the problem of very limited shutter speeds and shitty viewfinder, which place a limit on what you can actually do with them. Especially in the slower end - no shutter speeds below 1/30 aside from bulb is just bullshit, which will lead you into situations where you actually cannot get an exposure because you don't have speeds slow enough, and you're out of aperture options. Meanwhile the MTL goes all the way down to 1 second setting while also having 1/1000 maximum to Zenit's 1/500.

Stupid question, I am a beginner to film and I use a Minolta X-700. I plan on using the Aperture Priority setting because Manual is spooky. That being said I am looking for good Black and White film to shoot on overcast days, any ones you guys suggest?

Also general tips would be helpful, thank you!

So I happened to be in the Brisbane CBD the other day and decided to take a peek in the Ted's Camera Store on Adelaide St.
Much to my surprise, they had some film for sale, including 3pks of Superia 200, which I quite liked.
Asked the salesgirl how much.
>$32.95, really good value that one
Holy fucking shit. She got pretty snippy when I literally scoffed at that.
I said that's about double the price of the last place I bought them, went home and checked the price tag on the box and it was $18.95.
It really makes me sad to think that noobs see these ripoff merchant prices and think that's how much it really costs to shoot film; and then when they pay someone $20 for a dev and scan, and get Noritsu scans back, they think that garbage is the sort of quality you get.
>greedy shopkeepers kill the film

Good for you, lil buddy!
The situation in Brisbane is pretty grim though.
I'm thinking I'll probably start up a dev enterprise of my own at some stage though.
$20 dev plus DLSR scans, $7 bulk rolled film ($25 incl. dev&scan), $13 dev only or scan only, all processes, all formats.
It would be less of a money-making enterprise than a way of funding my own expenses.

I could pay around 6 bucks for development of BW film and another 6 for a shitty scan with bad, digitall looking grain (pretty sharp thou).
I just bought a 500ml bottle of Rodinal for 13 bucks and decided to develop and scan my own shit. Quality I get with my crappy Nex is still much better than a lab stuff.

This was taken on fp4+ at 125 iso, I'm really pleased with this film so far.

Something like the Artograph LightTracer Light Box 10 in. by 12 in on Amazon is about is cheap as light boxes get new and at the very least you'll be able to lay film directly on it without getting a grid of pixels like you would get with a monitor. Or maybe something like the Logan Electric 5.5 x 9.5" Light Box #501 on B&H. If you have about $100 to spare there are some more pricey ones that might provide brighter or more even light but it might not be necessary for your purposes.

Hey guy's I've recently started shooting film (Nikon F2) and as somebody who started with DSLR (Nikon 5500D? I think) I complain that I have to use a whole roll to switch into a different ISO or black and white

So i was thinking why not have two film cameras?
What cheap film camera thats not battery dependent would you recommend to me?

There's nothing wrong with shooting auto, just remember that the camera's opinion isn't necessarily the correct one. You'll need to apply compensation or use the auto exposure lock when appropriate to get the best exposure, but that's one thing you learn as you go. Manual mode has its uses but it's not the "pro" mode you seem to believe it is.

Also be sure to always carry extra batteries, the X-700 is a power hog for what is is.

film will continue to degrade until it gets developed, maybe even a little faster after it's exposed. but no you don't need to freeze it, just get it developed after you shoot it like a normal person. freezing is for long term storage when you're not planning to shoot it for a few months/years.

This is Ilford Pan 400 (exp. april '18) overexposed 1 or 2 stops, developed in kodak's D-76, scanned at 3100dpi. You can see the scan's too low res to discern the grain.

What dev/dilution/time did you use and how old was your film stock/how was it kept?

Do you have any tips for developing bw at home?

If you're underexposing and pushing film then ofc it's gonna get grainier.

What tips do you need? Just develop stuff at home, it's easy and cheap.

Does anyone have a good manual exposure guideline that gives some basic idea for weather? I've been told for ISO100 and sunny weather you'd shoot 8/125 (or a variation with the same ratio), then if you're in shadows you'd go one up in aperture or down in speed, same for clouds or being inside. And then each step of ISO moves the base line by one.

I wish I had but alas I use a universal PZO tank that, although taking both 35mm and 120, snags the film a lot. Also, being that humongous faggot I am I develop in caffenol (kawa z Auchan najtańsza rozpuszczalna) and although entirely satisfactory, the results feel sacreligious (also foma's rodinal knockoff gets you cheaper dev cost per roll if you're doing high dilution stand development, though I've read rodinal is quite generous with grain size, sth id like to avoid) - I dev too rarely to invest in a proper, but ultimately unstable due to limited shelflife, developer.

Pic is same batch of ilford pan 400 in "delta-std" caffenol mix. My ghetto scan doesnt give it justice, though, grain/quality-wise. Tint added because it felt more vibrant than grayscale.

I did my first cross processing today with some old ass ektachrome 100 (expired 2000) that sat in the drawer exposed since last summer and I finally managed to throw it in some c41
I kinda like that, the tint isn't even half as bad as I thought on most of the shots

>>
How hard is it to start developing C-41 film at home? I've been developing black and white for a little over a year now and have gotten pretty good at the process.
>>
>>2826659
I would honestly say easier than black and white. You can buy those kits off Freestyle Photographics or Film Photography Project. There are only 3 chemical baths and each batch takes like ~10 mins to develop. You just need to control the temperature +/- 5 deg. F or so. Everything else is exactly the same as black and white, no safelight.
>>
>>2826670
The temperature is the biggest issue I've had with developing color at home. My water only gets to about 110 degrees Fahrenheit and I don't know if that's too cold to do it.
>>
what are the best archival pages for 35mm negatives?

PrintFile are fucking hard to get in and out, because they make the damn slips so tight. struggling and forcing them in/out scratches them all up.

35-Kive is also shit, thin and flimsy and the plastic is so cheap it literally starts falling apart and getting all scratched and beaten up
>>
>>2826675
110 is too hot. Stores have the PDF directions posted, go read them. What you can do is just have hot and cold water running and the temperature should equalize and stay the same for a long time. You can otherwise buy aquarium heaters for cheap to warm up water.
