I need the best possible telephoto lens for a Nikon D3300. I'm looking in to doing more wildlife photography, I cant really fined anything on amazon and there aren't any shops close by to me.
>pic I got with a 55-200mm lens

You can get a Nikon NIKKOR ED 400mm f/5.6 Ais Manual focus Lens for like $400 dollars off of ebay. I purchased a 600mm f5.6 for about $1500 and adapted it to my canon camera. the image quality is pretty damn good, but manual focus sucks ass on moving animals.
The Tamron 150-600 is quite good all around hobby wildlife lens. It can't compete with the serious business lenses in this focal length, obviously, but i find the image quality to be reasonably good at f/8, even f/10 if you have the light for it.
The other option mentioned above is valid too; older manual and screw drive af lenses. You have to manual focus the af ones though as your camera body doesn't have the motor to auto focus them.
Nikon 200-500 or 300f4
I think it would be better to start with a Tamron 70-200/2.8
It doesn't offer a longer reach but the image is much cleaner and you get a lot more detail and can crop in further.
>>2819274
Also I have a 400mm manual focus and it is a bitch to get anything in focus and you can forget moving subjects. Go with AF but since you have a gimped mount without a screwdrive AF you are left with newer design lens.
>>2819413
I have a 600mm and it is a bitch to nail focus, I usually use live view and zoom in to see if I'm focused correctly but it's a challenge if the animal is moving a lot. But you can still get good results. You'll struggle more to get good shots lined up then you will focusing.
>>2818849
Finally I find someone else who has a d3300. Nice pick my friend.
Can you retards stop helping people who post gear shit outside of the gear thread?
I also have a Nikon D3300 and "shoot" mostly birds. Started with the 55-200mm which taught me a lot, but for now happy with my 70-300mm VR lens.
Just that bit extra, still easy to bring, auto focus for the moments I need it and a bit faster. But, with wildlife the urge for more mm is always in the back off your head ofc. Limited mm makes you more creative in approaching the animals I've learned and for the birds far away I enjoy watching them with a spotting scope :) gl & hf

Screw all these shitty zoom lens responses, get a Sigma 300mm F4 APO Tele Macro, good aperture quite sharp wide open (much more than the canon and nikon equivalents) in a very compact package with autofocus and a great price second hand.

If you want good quality for cheap old gear's the way to go like >>2818981 suggested.
I got a Tokina 100-300 f4 about ten years ago, it was less than $300, nice look to the images, and it's virtually indestructible. I don't think their modern AT-X line is as good but I've seen some decent IQ out of the 80-400 if it's stopped down. I've never had any trouble manually focusing with it like >>2819413 but it did take some practice.

It's a damn shame the 3300 won't meter with them though. I spent a long time guessing exposures when I had a D80. Blew one now and then but it was a REALLY good way to get a strong feeling for judging light and calculating exposures mentally.
Heres some sample images shot with the nikkor 600mm f5.6, thats 30 years old.

>>2823039
I'm pretty sure this is one of the lenses I tested in store yesterday. It had optic stabilization and had pretty sharp images with pretty good colors.
I liked it better than Tamron's equivalent.
>>2823039
>>2823105
Nope, sorry I just looked this lens up. The lens I tested was more expensive and I think the minimum aperture was like 3.5-6 or something.
It might have actually been this one:
http://www.abesofmaine.com/Sigma_70-200mm_F2_8_EX_DG_OS_HSM_Lens_for_Nikon_1002974.html?l=Google&gclid=CIuD6cShpcwCFQIcaQodrYYFzA
But I could have sworn it had a smaller minimum aperture and had some kind of range when it came to the aperture.

You mean shills of maine. Or was it shams of maine?
Either way don't waste your time and shekels on them, they are a bunch of asshats. B&H is miles better than them and I still wouldn't buy from B&H.
>>2827117
This. They'll fucking sell you a gray market product without telling you it's gray market. Fuck them.
>>2827117
I've had so many bad experiences with B&H. Mostly due to their fucking holidays. If you're in NYC, yeah, go to B&H and love it. If you're on the internet, just get your shit from Amazon. The price is the same, you can get fast shipping, they're in stock more often...
I pre-ordered an XPro2, and I did it with B&H because of a promotion that someone was going to get a free one, and it was the same price as on amazon, so why not me, right? Well I did my pre-order the first day it was possible to do so, and was still told on shipping day that it was going to take an additional 9 days after release for them to ship mine, and they were going to ship it ground, unless I wanted to pay $100ish for expedited shipping (???). So I canceled my pre-order, bought it on amazon, and had it in my hand two days later.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of B&H's business comes from overseas instead of US domestic business. Amazon and other online retailers refuse to ship a lot of stuff like laptops and camera gear overseas. I bought a laptop from them last year and even after paying for ~3 day international shipping to Island China and import tax I ended up paying around half of what I would have if I bought it here with moon money.

Hey, I own a Tamron 70-300vc, it costed me like 450USD brand new, and I absolutely love it. It's a really good lens, and I shoot wildlife only

70-200 f4L IS on a full-frame Canon 5D
>>2828875
Distance always trumps glass.
That being said, the Nikon 70-300 VR is a good choice as well as the Tamron offering but my mother's seems to be coming apart after very heavy usage. Optically it's titties and the stabilizer stomps all over my 70-200.
If you're a real baller grab the Nikkor 80-400 VR
>>2828883
This.
Literally the only reason I went full frame is because it allowed me to get closer.
>>2828896
What I probably should have said was getting closer to your subject with a more versatile lens always trumps 10,000-dollar bazooka glass that is only good for one thing.
>>2828902
Not really. "Distance trumps glass" says it all, and it applies to all lenses.
I'm at my happiest when I am able to use 105 f/2.8. Usually I'll leave a trail of gear I have to go back and pick up. Here's how it usually goes as I get closer:
>600
>300
>105
i get a lot of shit for no using the nikon 70-300mm. I use the nikon 55-300mm and I have barely any issues with the lens, it has a really good performance, so i'd reccomend it if you wanna save some bucks
>>2828896
What???
How much of your shooting do you do with an 8mm lens from 4cm away?
>>2830736
I'm referring to telephotos and wildlife.
Generally speaking, you're not going to get that close to wildlife, especially up here. It's not like Florida where you can just walk up to most birds without them caring. Here, almost everything will fuck off the moment it sees you, even from hundreds of feet away.
I have gotten very close before, and have shorter lenses for such occasions, but generally speaking, 50+ feet is the norm, so telephotos are my main equipment.
On my D7100, the 600 f/4 had a very narrow field of view. Generally an excellent combination, but when I find myself in a situation where I could get closer, I just can't because the frame is already filled (or will be when the birds spreads its wings). Full frame has really allowed me to push in even closer.
TL;DR: I have come to appreciate the extra room of the D610 far more than the extra reach of the D7100.
