you cut off the statue in awkward places (head, hand)
Also, this just feels like something you would see at the museum, there's almost none of your own vision added to it
>>2818957
looks overexposed and the bokeh is very busy, distracting from the subject. The twigs are also another problem, but fixing the exposure and the bokeh should be primary
>>2818958
I understand what you were going for, but the people in the front of the crowd are too dark to be really considered part of the composition, they rather feel like they were just a nuisance while you tried to snap a picture of the painting
>>2818960
reflection shots are a bit overdone, but I like them personally. However, the reflection should usually give you a new view on things and this picture could've just been taken by turning around
>>2818962
the mannequin in the foreground blocks the trail of views, which isn't necessarily bad, but that one dressed in white in the background draws too much attention to it to make the scene balanced. A few steps to the right would've helped
>>2818963
a bit more breathing space on the top would be nice, but otherwise well composed and lighted
>>2818966
not sure what to say about this one there's really not much there desu
>>2818967
same as the previous one
>>2818969
probably your best shot, pretty good composition (red umbrella could be a bit further to the right) and the subject is cool too (minimalist landscape shot of a beach)
>>2818971
should've tried to center the rail to get a nice balance there. The people on the walkway are also too distractive unfortunately
>>2818973
could use less of the foreground since the background feels much more interesting and less repetitive. Again, a person in the picture can add something to it, but in this case he just feels distracting there
>>2818901
Wow, I really like how you managed to frame her. All the shit isn't distracting but leads the eye. Good job!
>>2818969
Should've made the red umbrella pop more.
The weather was incredible, the foreground was lit with sun and the sky really dark.

all valid critism
except the padding for the top when applied (snapshit_1, snapshit_4). ive seen countless portraits where the top is a bit cropped off, hell in movies - but someone always tells me there should be more padding every time i take the crop.
i thought having a tighter crop would emphasis a stronger subject. can you explain further?

that's true, but the example you posted is a headshot where the main and only subject you want to empathize is the face (and nothing else like the background and body in snapshit 1 for example)
with #4 it's kind of the same since the red of the dress is working together with the red of the background behind her. Plus, here it feels like if you wanted to cut off things on the top, you should do it a bit more, otherwise it looks like a mistake and not deliberately empathized

The rest are. Anyway, sticky =/= rules, and there isn't a rule about being smug. There is, however, a rule against announcing reports.
One of the two of us is actually contributing to the board, and the other is a shitposter with no photos and nothing but blind impotent rage. But, hey, I'm sure you think you're making /p/ a better place in your mind.

>Anyway, sticky =/= rules
Technically not, but the sticky is there for a reason and it still needs to be followed. It's like when daddy tells you to mow the lawn, you do as he says unless you're a disrespectful 15 year old faggot that thinks he can do whatever he wants. Which for you, is most likely the case.
>One of the two of us is actually contributing to the board
Lmao you're actually calling your oversized snapshits a contribution? Not to mention that by posting oversized images, not everyone can view them due to limited bandwidth and 4chan's slow ass servers. This is an image board you know? The whole point of resizing is so people can actually view images on the image board. Crazy right? So yeah, please tell me more about how you're "contributing".
Also, you might want to read up on Rule #2
>Post only photos that show at least trace amounts of thoughtful composition. Do not upload random snapshots.
>and the other is a shitposter
Mhm. Because purposely posting oversized images is definitely not shitposting hey?
>But, hey, I'm sure you think you're making /p/ a better place in your mind.
Hahaha, ditto m8. Keep up the contradictions buddy

Great light and mood, but what am I looking at in this photo that will make me care?
You're very close to the "The light is so good that the content doesn't really matter" territory, but there's so much going on in the frame, content wise, that we start trying to look at it, and find that it's pretty boring and cluttered and mundane, and are left disappointed. The only thing in focus is two spatula handles.
Be nice please, I'm new to this

Resize your photos
As you're getting ready to post the photos, think to yourself "if I hadn't taken this photo, and didn't know anything about these locations, would I want to see these, and would I care about them at all when looking at them?"
If the answer is no, you may want to reconsider posting them, and work to start filling your frame with things your viewer may connect with.

>>2819888
Do you have to resize them more than under 2mg?
>>2819885
why watermark?
>>2819891
I've seen this debate a ton of times. And I never know which side I am on. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I feel like if trying to do it for more than just hobby and fun, then watermarking images you are proud of can help get your name out/more exposure if it is shared. But I definitely don't think all images should be. And I only watermark my resized ones, never full resolution. I think it is a personal preference thing, but hey, people do still pictures and take credit for others work when it is good sometimes, so I don't don't see harm in it as long as it doesn't take away from the picture. Especially if it's just something posted online, but they offer it without as well.

Not him, but like he said they're boring fucking snapshits.
They have no real subject, especially #1 and #2. It's a store front and a truck.. neither particularly interesting to look at and they're shot straight on. Turning it black and white does not make it interesting.
#3 is at least decent, I'd look at that and say "neat" if I was scrolling on Facebook, but it's a sunset pictures which are a penny a dozen to be honest.

GR arrived today, this is my first time going out shooting so i guess i'd need much more practice
how do i do people?
i tend to just bottle it and end up getting the subject far away on the edge of the frame
also, is it a good idea to go in close for shots?
this 28mm lens makes things seem so distant even though i'm cropping to 35

Perhaps the act of taking a garbage snapshit isn't that bad, I mean we've all done it. We've seen something that looked vaguely interesting and thought to ourselves "Well I have the skills to make a photo of that".
Where the line is drawn is when you get home and you look at it on your computer. The normal people of /p/ will look at it and go "Eh shit, that's not very good is it" rate it 1, and move on and later deleting it as part of their workflow. Never to think about it again.
Somehow this thread has attracted a ton of people with the perseverance of one legged man trying to swim across the English channel. These types of people see the snapshit on the big screen think "Oh, maybe I can edit it.. wonder what it looks like in black and white" and then believe the photograph worthy of being shared and possibly praised.
I only wish I was as optimistic, or maybe as deluded as some of you. Shameful thread.

Also, there is some awful critique going on in this thread. I feel bad for the people who uploaded their photos only to hear bullshit.
>>2820107
Shameful? Clearly there are some newer photographers in this thread. I don't see where there is shame in that. People should definitely consider what they are posting, but sometimes people just don't know better and they need to learn what actually makes a photo good. I agree that these aren't very interesting threads to look at, so maybe a good suggestion would be to make some critique containment general threads and clearly state that recent photo threads are for relevant shit only.
>>2819659
Disagree strongly. The great light and mood make the photo. My eyes are easily attracted to the cooking equipment and I can almost smell the delicious scents of a romantic afternoon of cooking when looking at this.
Great photo.
why is there even a discussion for "recent photo thread"?
you probably did not set out to take a specific picture - you just happen to have a camera along, saw something neat, and after 300 snapshits you cherry picked 6 or so and posted on here thinking its gonna win the IP award or expecting people to see your "grand vision" of some random fuckhead you saw on the street
of course someone is going to grill, but if your photo doesn't appeal to the masses (which is usually the end game for any photo) then shouldn't that tell you to change?
I pushed some Tri-X to 3200 for fun. Looks like it ended up underexposed anyway.

A quarter of the thread is people bitching about the fact that their precious snapshit was critiqued as being a snapshit.
There doesn't seem to be the basic grasp that while you can frame a photo correctly, get exposure correct, etc it doesn't make it a good photo.
You have to have at least a subject and usually lighting that's interesting.
Look at the difference between
>>2819722
>>2819655
If you removed the lighting from the second photo it would also be a snapshit without any real value.
The lighting makes the photo interesting, sets a mood, and honestly tells a story in it's own. That is a really good shot. The other one is not.

Is you set it at a higher ISO the camera will think it's more sensitive and reduce exposure time accordingly. The camera doesn't perform alchemy inside the camera and magically make it a higher ISO. You could've just turned the shutter speed down a few stops.

Baltz's work was a study of the new industrial parks that started popping up in the late 60's and 1970's. They're banal, hideous stuccoed things that give little indication of their use or intent. The architect (or whoever) would make frivolous little details (like the patterned lines running around the top) as an attempt at breaking up the monotony, but ironically only reinforced it. Nature, when and if it was at all present, was put there by the designer and is contained in rigid little boxes, like the trees in the previous photo or the dirt in this photo.
The point is, there is no single subject. The scene itself is the subject, and Lewis Baltz is far from the only photographer to do this. You have to learn to look deeper into photographs, to examine the entire scene and look for the clues towards the photographer's intent.
>>2820581
The first line of the post above mine is a happy little accident. Love it.
>>2820581
not that guy I've been spending such a long time frustrated over not being able to find neat subjects that I've completely overlooked incredibly dull subjects but ones that have a reason in being dull out of necessity
Thanks for posting this
>>2820584
I think it's good because it examines the everyday and forces you to look at it.
Saying that it's "the geometry" totally betrays both your inexperience and your inability to think about photographs on anything more than a superficial level.
That's cool, we were all at that point once, but you shouldn't assume that you have any sort of insight and authority. Shut up and listen, you might learn something.
>>2820586
No, I'm not talking about "why is it a good subject to have chosen" I'm talking about that individual photograph. Anyone can go to their local strip mall, and take a shot of the boring building and say it's a thesis on the necessary banality of mass produced architecture, but that photo in general, which you posted, is much more than a random snap of a FedEx store next to a cigar shop. I'm not arguing that the chosen topic is good or bad, I'm speaking about your specific examples that you've posted, and why they, specifically, have strength over
>pic related
>>2820564
I would respectfully suggest for you to attempt to rectify the distortion of your wide angle lens. You can look up, and have light room automatically compensate for it by the lens.

Maybe it's because he is surrounded by condescending cunts who don't teach things, and in stead, only denigrate people who are actually posting photos. Surely he has a better chance of improving if you stop throwing rocks at his windows and suggest how he may improve*.
*improve in this instance means take photos that are more pleasing to your personal taste, surely.
>>2820590
No, you said that all photos have to have subjects.
I said no, that's wrong.
Then you asked me to post a good photo with no subject.
I did.
You then tell me that the subject is geometry (lol).
I tell you that, no, the subject is the entire scene itself and is consistent with his body of work.
Now you're trying to say that hey, all you were REALLY saying is that good composition can make photos with no subjects good.

And you didn't answer. You in stead talked about the point of the body of work. I would like you to explain what makes the photo you posted good, and the photo I posted not good (which it obviously isn't)
Someone else said that a good photo requires a subject, which I happen to believe, but still, it doesn't explain why you believe the photo(s) you posted are good. Not why they're parts of good bodies of work, but why the photos, on their own, are good.
>>2820669
Just saying, when a student fails a class, it's generally the teacher's fault. Telling someone they're failing without anything constructive attached may make you feel better about your own work, but it's certainly not doing him any good.
perhaps he should "go read a book faggot"?
>>2820581
What you just described is the topic of the entire body of work, and you are absolutely correct in saying it. However, the subject of the photo you posted is absolutely geometry.
>>2820684
That same comment applies to my Bland strip mall photo that I posted in response to you.
>>2820684
That is a super nebulous comment that could be applied to literally every photo in the recent photo thread.
Completely opportunist shot with close to no thought put into it. But hey, it's recent.
However it made me want to produce some kind of set around randomness, right now I'm gathering potential locations.

The subject, if there is one, is the pile of dirt.
Geometry isn't a subject unless it's an abstraction. It's an element of a photo, specifically composition. It's like saying that the subject of a photo is "light" or "texture" or "grain".
>>2820690
Sure, and I looked at that "bland" strip mall photo that you posted intently, because it's interesting. Does Baltz's photo have better composition? Absolutely. Is "composition" the subject of his photo? No. You guys need to sort your thoughts out.
>>2820694
Right, which is why you don't see me shitposting my garbage crit calling everything "boring". I look at photos, and some of them are successful at some thing and others aren't, but I don't call them boring, and I don't dismiss a photo because it doesn't have a "subject".
I'll be happy to write a more in-depth analysis of why Baltz's photo is successful, but I'm not going to do it right before I have to go to work and I'm not going to do it in the Recent Photo Toilet (so named for its design, rather than the content). It seems like this board is at a crucial juncture right now anyway and could use some education and critical thinking.

That's the shape of the building, senpai.

Confirmed for growing up with your parents blaming everyone but you.
Nobody on /p/ is their teacher, this isn't even a critque thread. It's perfectly fine for someone to say "I don't like it/it's shit" and move on, especially from some of these which are clearly low effort snapshits.
And yeah, maybe some people here should read a basic exposure book, possibly the camera manual, and probably a composition book.
>>2820758
What am I doing wrong then? Please enlighten me. I've read the manual...

Yup, /p/ cancer confirmed. Please trip for ease of filtering.
>>2820722
Still can't put together literally one thought to explain why the photos he posted are good.
>>2820678
The problem is the sheer volume of shit in these threads. Instead of just saying "it's shit", it'll be "learn composition and find a subject" posted over and over again. When a photographer can't apply the basics, all they are going to take is shit.
>>2820812
Maybe you're just too stupid to understand. ;)
>>2820722
>Geometry isn't a subject
>Neither is light or texture
>All photos are interesting, even when they aren't
>Photos don't need subject to be successful
Oh, I didn't realize the sort of person I was talking to. You should have warned me in advance.
>>2820823
Wait, weren't you going to work an hour and a half ago, which was the reason you couldn't come up with a sentence about why your photos were good?
>>2820827
Sorry bud, I should have told you that you were out of your league.
Next time I'll point you to a nice thread full of cute girls or race cars or kitty kats rather than try to get you to elucidate your super-deep critical insight.
>>2820814
"Learn composition and find a subject" is more helpful than "How did you fuck up so bad". It gives a direction for the person to aim their attention at least.
>>2820828
I'm at work now. I didn't want to write a whole spiel about Baltz then and won't right now, either.
The Baltz photos are good because they examine the banal Western expanse and the creation of a new type of workspace, and do so with pleasing tonality, texture and composition while still maintaining a documentary sense of time and place.
>>2820860
The first photo you posted is literally a shot of a wall with a door in it. It has no sense of exploration or examination, and could exist in nearly any time, and nearly any place.
So really, when we take away all the "I read an art book and know how to try to inject artistic merit into anything" bullshit, you're left with:
>pleasing tonality, texture and composition
which are all tools, and means, meant to be aplied to a subject, rather than ends in and of themselves.
So really you just like it because it looks nice, and because someone famous told you that boring photos are good too.
>>2820581
The interesting thing to note about bringing up work like this is that in almost all cases of modern "no subject is the subject" style art, the individual pieces don't stand on their own, and only really become successful when viewed in the entirety of the project, which then injects a "subject" into it. For instance, with this section of Baltz's work, the photos themselves don't have obvious subjects (debatable) but the collection of photos exploring the architecture clearly has a subject.
People frequently reference Eggleston as a champion for the "no subject photos can still be great" idea, but the most memorable photos in his body of work are memorable because they have something memorable and "stand out" in them. (e.g. the red ceiling, the plane cup, the Peaches sign, etc)
Things like this aren't meant to stand on their own. They're successful as a whole. A leg can't win a race, but two legs attached to a torso with muscles and tendons can win a race. To cut a sprinter's leg off and lay it on the start line, and call it shit because it isn't moving very fast is ridiculous, as it trying to examine photos like these on their own.

Not sure why you're asking me, I don't think it's a terrible shot.
The light to the left is a bit distracting, above the train car though. Might darken that a bit in PP.
Hey /p/! Can I please get some feedback on these?
