Hi guys
I just bought a 720nm filter to screw it on my Lumix G7
I will post some shots I've done and pp but I need help to make them more clear
Hi!
I'm doing IR shots with 2 conversions: 350D for 760nm and 1000D for 590nm.

OP, shooting in IR doesn't exempt you from having a decent subject or composition. i.e. >>2818697 , half of the image is uniform dull grass. While I understand and appreciate the novelty of seeing the goddamn world in a wavelength spectrum invisible to the fucking human eye holy shit, having produced a lot of similar images, I would never post them online or expect anyone to find them interesting. Just practice snapshits, these. Just like the one I'm posting now.
Also holy fuck that colour choice. Why god, why.

if you want clear IR shots your best bet is to get it converted to shoot ir or full spectrum with a filter on the lens.

>>2823074
Well, this is my problem with a lot of Florida, the landscape is bland in a lot of ways. If you are going there for photography as your primary reason, I would go for wildlife as there are a ton of gators very close by on the Shark Valley trail, and for sunsets. Fantastic sunsets there. Other than that it is a lot of the same and the only real way to get to some of the great unique areas of the glades is by kayak / boat.

I've read that a lot of cameras nowadays have pretty strong IR filtering. Would I be able to do IR photography with a filter and an unmodified D3200 or am I wasting my time? What filters are recommended?
>>2823374 If you are using an unmodded camera, just order some cheap (< $10) Chinese filters to experiment with from DX or Aliexpress. I'd suggest getting 680nm and 720 or 760nm filters.
With a 680nm IR pass filter you have moar light and colour with less IR effect, with a 720nm or longer less light, with nearly monochrome result after fixing the white balance.
If you find IR might be for you, get a modded camera.

Every photographer needs a tripod.
>>2823499
I mean, will I be able to get shots without one? I have one, just not where I am at the moment.
>>2823500
For IR in bright sunlight, unmodded camera will have several seconds exposure time depending of ISO and filter. You will need a tripod.
Something I've always wondered: is there any way to use an IR filter to any effect in video? I love the aerochrome look a la >>2819623 and would love to achieve that in motion.
>>2823511
Camera with IR block removed + yellow filter, WB all the way to blue, channels swapped
>>2823512
Would there be a process in which you didn't have to permanently alter your camera body? Maybe an IR filter over the lens?
Digital sensors by themselves are sensitive to the full spectrum, so to make a camera that only sees visible light they put a filter on the sensor to block IR and UV. If you put an IR filter on the lens you are filtering even more, that's why it's better to have the sensor filter removed or replaced.
>>2823747
Read the thread. You can do it it with filters. The downside is that your exposure times will be in the several second range and you will definitely need a tripod. Mine, >>2822653 was 4 seconds at f/6.3, and is a Hoya 720nm filter on an unmodified Olympus XZ-2.
And pic related i took yesterday in full, mid-day california sun and was 13 god damn seconds at f/3.5.

Reminder to everyone:
IR photography is not a subject, it is a tool for capturing a subject. Much like bokeh, or tilt shift, taking a photo merely to use the effect only entertains people who are new to the effect. The rest of us still look for a pleasing photo, and in this thread, are generally left wanting.

Yeah. I take a color shot and an IR shot. in photoshop I copy the red channel of the color image to the green channel in a new image and the green to the blue channel. Then the IR image goes in the red channel.
I found a diagram that explains it. it does the same thing that the filters/dyes in aerochrome would do, only digitally.
Some people have done it with a yellow filter instead of taking two shots, but I didn't like the results of that as much when I tried it.

I think his photos are the reason why a lot of people try to get that look in the first place, but yeah, an uninteresting subject doesn't magically turn good when the colors are weird.
He actually shot video footage with the film too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTVkqwuLYHU
>>2825682
does anyone actually have the video material? When I looked into it he was touring with it in art museums somewhere in the states.. I'd really want to see it, even if it's just a montage of various shots without any highly structured narrative.
>>2823511
Here's a boring 10s snap for you. (I can't video, PowerShot A810 is pretty bad for it, and it was overcast anyway.)
But there's no reason why someone with skills, sunlight, something to shoot and a slightly better camera could not create something interesting.
>>2823926
is false in response to the original question. If you want to emulate Aerochrome in video there's no alternative to removing the IR block filter and shooting through yellow.
>>2823511

was this with the filter removed on the camera?
I have a spare canon t3i that used to be my main, but i've since upgraded. Should I take the plunge and just go full IR? I really like the BW and I like the color.
I'm thinking of getting one of the filters from Lifepixel for it. The results are pretty sweet, but i don't know if I should go whole-hog for such a mediocre camera. Pics are nice but Video is lacking and grainy. Thoughts?
>>2825761
>>2826190
He's not releasing the vid yet. He's enjoying the success of the small, gallery-style touring. He's also an installation artist so he views the film in the same frame of mind. He'll release it eventually but he's keeping it on lock for now.
Also, I believe the photos are medium format. I don't know how the hell he found medium format Aero, but he did. Its way more clear than 16mm and he blows them up very large sometimes. And, by large, I mean like the size of entire walls. Which 16 couldn't handle. Could even be large format.
>>2827344
Yes, it's a self-modded P&S. Entry level Canon PowerShot, cheapest I could find at the time.
I'll mod an old EOS-M or something if I start feeling serious about IR.

thanks, i'm going to give it a go with some filters and compare results.
What happens if I don't use a filter when using infra-red Rollei film? I have some but these filters be pricey.
>>2827812
Without filter Rollei IR 400 acts like any ISO 400 film. (There's a thing called Google search, try it some time.)
>>2827789
I removed the ir block filter (in A810 it's a thin 8x8mm filter in front of sensor, only tool needed is a small screwdriver) and replaced it with a piece of Wratten 12. (But just taping the filter in front of the lens would work.)
Yellow filter removes blue light, so I get r = red, g = green and b = ir. Green dye in Bayer filter array blocks IR but blue and red do not. (Technically red channel is also sensitive to IR and that's why the pictures taken with visible spectrum blocking IR pass filter are all magenta without white balance adjustment.) With a modded camera with yellow filter one can approximate colour IR film look by swapping the colour channels RGB -> BRG. Result: IR is red, red is green and green is blue (and original blue is missing).
I shot it with custom white balance, (so unedited footage it's not all yellow) and edited it by adjusting hue 120 degrees and randomly messed with brightness/contrast/saturation/gamma until the dog was not a featureless black blob and everything else pink porridge. I only have AVS Video Editor and not any experience of adjusting video colours.
>>2827802
The two exposure method results in a sharper image if you're re-focusing between color and IR shots, but it requires a tripod and perfectly still subjects. you can get similar results with a yellow filter like this >>2827806 for windy days or when you can't use a tripod though.
