I often browse this Russian imageboard but I have no clue how to speak it. They often post these 'depression/atmosphere' photos and I absolutely love them.
I was just wondering how are they created? Disposable cameras? 35mm film? Photoshop grain effects?
I ask them how but I never get any response
dropping some sample photos

This particular image can be achieved on digital by shooting late at night, and pushing the midtones and highlights up to add brightness, and raise the blacks up. Add a light leak.
>>2817621
I assume the grain and the white floating artifacts are added in afterwards?
some more
>>2817623
It's possible it's shot on film, which would mean the light leaks and dist and scratches are real. But with digital, you can get a "texture" layer and add it on top of your images.
>>2817624
sounds quite confusing to me as a novice but I'll try to make sense of it
>>2817626
any idea how to obtain these texture layers? a quick search just reveals solid, unattractive materials
>>2817628
The shooting will come to you pretty easily if you understand exposure, and your camera. If you're having trouble with that, a couple of passes through your manual, and a couple of youtube videos will help you there. For the rest, you'll need an editing program like photoshop.
As to the texture layer, you can just google "film texture layer" and you'll get lots of results. they'll look like solid colors with crap on top of them (smears and dust and splotches) and you download it, and then open your photo in photoshop, and then create a new layer on top of the photo, and paste in the texture on top, and turn the texture translucent so it looks like the texture is on the photo.

These are all shot on film, not mocked up digitally
Film is easy to shoot (as easy as digital as long as you don't feel the compulsive need to chimp every shot). No reason why you can't take photos like this immediately.
You can pick up 35mm film cameras for pennies on the dollar these days, people just don't use the medium any more so it's a buyers market really.
>>2817637
Sorry if I sound like an idiot here, but I had a standard Nikon SLR film camera a while ago and the photos looked quite plain and bland, a bit like a simple DSLR/phone photo
Is there any reason why they have nice photos? Are they using old Soviet 35mm or something? I don't really know much about this
>>2817639
It's the light they're shooting in. you need dark scenes with a bit of bright light in them.
Do you have an account on vk dot com yet? I'm pretty sure they steal these photos from one of the "publics" (subreddits) out there.
vk dot com slash berezka – this is the one public I know of that has photos like that sometimes, I'm pretty sure there's more.
>>2817628
that one looks fantastic
>>2817639
Try exposing improperly. All of these are either under or overexposed, producing interesting effects with film. With enough tweaking you can get a similar effect in post with a digital sensor. It's just tough if you don't know what you want going in.
You could also try using a crappier lens--perhaps one that's really soft or uncoated with flaring issues.
What's this website you're talking about?
I was rewatching my last year's catalog and found somewhat depressing shots.
C&C are welcome.

This is 35mm film. I shoot film all the time and you can tell from the little white scrapes (unless they were added in post to try and look like film which is unlikely as shit).
>>2817622
I know this one in particular
the extreme grain with particularly lots of white dots usually happens when you push the iso real hard on film. This was shot with expired kodak max 400 on 1/1000 1.8 on auto exposure to compensate by bumping the iso
It would have looked like that image if I shot at night
To do it on digital I recommend using old lenses shot wide open (seriously as high an aperture as possible) shooting -5 exposure compensation (you may need an ND filter for this) and bumping it up 2 or 3 stops in Lightroom, keeping your shadows really black and your light sources exposed fairly properly. Lightroom grain is a hell of a lot nicer than digital grain and that way there's no risk of over-exposing anything. Whack a dirty vignette on it and minimal split toning and call it a day
Alternatively use spot metering and expose for the highlights rather than the subject and fiddle around in lightroom for a few hours

get a camera with a somewhat working lightmeter and you should be good to go, film is pretty forgiving
