>>2807266
Yawn
>>2807268
I would have lowered the lens abit for a better composition. The lighting isn't great, maybe shoot at a different time of day so the subject isn't so shaded. There's really nothing creative about this shot. It's pretty snapshitty to be honest.

>>2807268
better
>>2807304
could have been framed better. the negative space on the top is distracting; maybe if you had shot this in landscape and given him some gazing direction, or gotten a bit closer and filled the frame with his head it would've been nicer. He has an interesting face and pose, so I would've liked to see it in more detail.
>>2807373
welle executed but kind of boring as far as composition or subject goes. what are you trying to convey with this photo?
>>2809239
do not post-process so heavily. read up about exposure (understanding exposure is a good book and readily downloadable) and composition/framing (the photographers eye is an excellent starting point). also go out and SHOOT as much as you can; you will improve.
would love some C&C on this pic!!!

Move your camera closer to the water and try to not get as much of the ground in the shot. The reflection on the water is nice, that bit of concrete in the foreground just ruins it. 4/10.
>>2808803
Is that Bloc Party?
>>2809511
that was a pretty conscious choice desu; wanted to use the forgeround to ive a sense of depth, as well as the lines in the concrete and the bridge to lead to ap oint just outside the frame to kind of make a very very static image somewhat more dynamic.
>>2809493
Generally don't use post-processing to make things lighter, your camera gets less details in low light.
Your pop-up flash might look gross. Think about potential light sources (maybe a flashlight), longer exposure times, and investigate the 'slow rear' flash option.
Whatever editing software you used stripped the exif I guess, its part of the file you get from you camera.
>>2809532
I used lightroom then the Nik Collection and sent this to my flickr. Thanks to you guys I understand that there has been too much post processing and will try to buy a flash soon and a new lens

You should have exposed correctly on the scene. What's going on with all the crazy hard noise? What did you do to it in post? You should not do that. You fucked the edge of the tree-line/sky transition too.

>>2809614
Puples and blues are very pleasing to my eyes. Might me a subjective thing I should overcome.

Well if that's the case, that's fine, but you should work to put purple and blue things in your frame, not just take whatever you happen to shoot and change it to be purple tinted.

Touched up the colours, straightened, did some cropping then saved for web all in Adobe Photoshop CS6. What do you think of the picture?
Here's a photo I took a few weeks ago - is it too noisy? Shooting out of a cave into the sun, so exposure was kinda difficult, and I did boost the saturation, possibly too much.
>>2807264
I don't get a sense of interesting/directed framing. This seems accidental because of that.
>>2807268
Most interesting of you photos, but not as dramatic as it could be. Different lighting conditions, more extreme angles (lower, for example) could make this more interesting.
>>2807304
I think it's okay he's not facing the camera, but I wish his back wasn't cropped out of the image.
>>2807373
Not a bad photo, just a kinda boring subject.
>>2808803
Really cool! Wish I could see his left eye maybe, like if his finger went down, but overall I really like it!
>>2809239
Looks underexposed, I think you have to add light (like when you're actually taking the picture). Even bouncing light of a reflector could help, as could reframing.
>>2810234
Subject of the photo feels really far away - subjective, but it might have been better to have used a longer lens so they fill out the gazebo more. Might have also taken the photo from a slightly lower angle, so that they're lying on where the horizon line would be - on the same lens, this could isolate them more within the frame of the gazebo. But interesting photo!
>>2810246
>>2810265
Same photographer? Really like these. Simple but well framed and clear.
>>2810585
Framing is not that interesting, neither is the subject. Personally, I don't like blowing out highlights like you have on the car's lights, but with certain objects many think it's okay (like bright lights in a dark frame).
I think it could be a really interesting piece if you framed it with the car on the left side, that wooden structure on the right. Forget the sign and most of the road, the light on the ground from the car headlights are the most interesting parts.
>>2810624
oops, forgot this

I liked the lighting in the cave a lot more - maybe not as much for exposure, but for how it fell on the subject - so that may be it.
What sticks out as good in the first image?
>>2810653
Actual contrast and composition. The dark on her, the bright out of focus beach. Some of that light falling on her, outlining her body, looks lovely in her hair. The grain also flatters it somewhat, giving it a soft look. I guess the red shirt is also a nice addition of color. Better than if she wore blue or yellow. It just says longing to me because of how beautiful yet distant the beach seems.
>>2810653
Generally soft diffused ambient light coming from one direction is a lot easier to make pleasing than direct hard light. I'd say both images are about the same quality though, overall. The first is cropped too tight, and basically just a photo of the side of someone's head with a distracting background. Not enough breathing room or environment to express a feeling of being there, etc.
The second is just some girl looking at a thing, making a dumb face, with her hair in the way. Not really much to be taken from the image. It's a candid shot of a bland moment.
anon may like the first one more because it's processing and exposure seem more "cinematic" than the second one.
>>2810624
I am going to reframe the car picture, thank you. As for the one which was underexposed, I'll try to buy a flash soon and learn light techniques
>>2810585
much better exposed. the lines on the road are interesting, and balance the photo well. however I recommend you take your time and study a bit of composition; it's ok to crop an image to an uncommon ratio now and again, but it's best to work with the inherent ratio of your camera and frame and compose every shot well in that.

Thoughts

>>2807264
despite what others have said i don't think the subject in this is boring, it's just that about everything else is lacking. not close enough in, not a great angle, poorly cropped, not very sharp in a bad way, probably would have helped if the aperture had been more like a 4-6 and cranking the shutter speed up to compensate.
>>2807304
fuck it, i think it's great. not every street shot needs to have the subject glaring into the lens. only things i would tweak is the lighting (though clearly you can't change the weather at the drop of a hat, so that's not really a fair criticism) and cropped a little more off the top so he was centered a little more.
>>2807373
good concept, well done, however the subject itself is somewhat uninteresting.

hmm I fucked with this one a bit hard the longer I look at it
>>2811415
I think this one lacks something in the toning as compared to your other work. It's just a touch dull. It might be as easy as bumping up the contrast or exposure a bit.
Black and white isn't really a copout, post is just as important. You often have to see the shot in the comfort of your chair to really know what it should be.
>>2811421
B&W is good when the colours are distracting. Often a shot can be great, but the colours won't be and would take away the focus from whatever's happening. A similar problem occurs with pixel-peeping autism, where being able to make out the individual pores of a man proves to be more of a distraction than anything to serve the picture.
>>2811415
>>2811420
there's nothing happening here, these photos are boring regardless of whether they're in colour or b&w
>>2811421
Good example of proper use of B&W. The only good thing you might get out of this photo in colour is the husky's eyes, other than that there would be distracting green grass, the hats and shirts of the two men behind the dog, the people walking by, maybe even the fence might be in some distracting colour. Often great photos are rendered shitty by being left in colour when b&w could fix them.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't aspire to get great photos with colour, of course.
>>2811431
Thanks man, I appreciate it. These are just random shots I take on campus after classes. A number of them come out dull and boring because the sterile architectures are dominant over most of the people.

I like the idea, but I think the image would be more interesting if you had the whole cat in the unfocused background. This way it's a bit too close, especially since there's not too much variation upon first glance.
Maybe you could work with coloring and saturation a bit more, so fore- and background look further away from each other.

>>2811479
Really not a fan of lomo and fake scratches etc., but I think it would be more convincing if the color profile and the theme would make it seem like a document or an old post card. Ways to achieve that might be, for example, cropping out most of the water, centralising your motive or adding a caption in free space on the photo (sky works best).
Take the image on the left, crop out a third of the river and a bit more than half of the sky, add a "Welcome in x" caption on the right side so that it takes up the space right from the upper bridge part.
>>2811482
aside from the size, I like this. Maybe it's just because I'm high, but I honestly believed for a sec that this was a color photo of white snow and a gray building. The BW toning is really nice.

Its a bit busy. My eyes dont know where to look, and when i try to take it in as a whole i just cant seem to figure it out. The highlights in the middle, especially on the right are too strong. Id use the mask tool in lightroom to take down the highlight, if not the exposure.
>>2811482
Nice shot, especially the reflections in the water. It's a bit crowded because of the trees and the huge range, so a viewer might be overwhelmed in the amount of those details.
If you know what you want the focus to be on first, think about if all of the details on the edges are necesseties (like the small tree in the front left).
You can also try lowering the half-tones, so the darker parts get a bit darker and you have more focus on the details sticking out of the amount of snow.
The amount of text isn't proportional to my critique of the image, I think this one looks really nice already, but if you strengthen the darkness of the river and the bench/bridge a bit, viewers will have an instant focus from which they can work their way to the details.
>>2811491
it's literally just a closeup picture of a corny object
the depth of field should have all the detail in focus imo
it's also blurry and there is some noise around the letters
even the composition is off, the top part of the figure is too close along the edge
the color is all right, but does nothing overall
>>2811496
Great advice. I'm happy with it currently, but i'll play around with you're ideas. Sounds like it could improve it quite a bit.
>>2811498

Thanks a lot. One of the biggest issues with more crowded underwater shots (or photos in general) is that I've grown to know the parts I like more or less and have my focus set already when looking at them again.
It gets easy to forget different people will not see it like I do instantly, and that photo was far from ideal anyway.

it'd be nice to see a bit more definition in the clouds
the rock on the left that hangs in from nowhere partially ruins the overall balance of the photo for me
the bottom portion of the photo is also unnecessary
>>2811506
That one's nice.
I'm not good with professional editing or anything, but is there a way to make the top of the sky have the same white as is between the rocks?
The shapes and focus are on point and the only way I could imagine to make more of the same frame would be to suck out background cloud colors.
>>2811507
My eyes keep going to the cooler tone on the upper right. Little unbalanced compared to the warmer left side. I would frame the drain a little differently. more to the left, or just flat out center it. It just doesn't draw my eyes right away. Maybe try bringing that cooler tone on the right all the way down that edge, but keep and even out the warm tones on the right.
>>2811507
I think this would be a very good situation to focus on a texture rather than the entire subject and shape
the way the red is sort of spattered and streaking is much more interesting than the drain or any narrative you are trying to create, this is personal preference I suppose and maybe someone would disagree and say the drain is fine
that cyan color in the top right would only work if it was sort of in every corner, but here it just throws off the color balance by seeping across the top and right
if you were to entirely eliminate the color I think it would improve the photography greatly in its current state
also a little brighter whites could help
quite a bit of visual noise
the overall composition is okay, but as I said a more subject-less approach could potentially not hurt in a situation like this
>>2811509
Seems like we did a good job on giving opposite advice. But I agree on the unnecessity of the bottom part after paying more attention there.
>>2811509
I cant un see the white being stronger between the rocks now. Good call, i'll have to work on that. I shot this after not picking up my camera in over a year. All the shots from this day felt i was learning to walk again. Wish i would have shot more out there. Colorado is just so damn beautiful.

the clouds being prominent or entirely eliminated is a deliberate choice that can't really be weighed negatively or positively imo

do you actually like the way the rock on the left has no psychological closure?

I really don't like commenting on these photos because I always see them in gearfag dick stroking contests trying to show of their lens
there isn't much to say because it only strokes the surface of any sort of complexity

I didn't pay too much attention to the awful top right, thanks for the advice.
And I didn't want to create a subject beneath texture/structure/flow, but I see how it could be interpreted in such a way easily (that's actually my biggest problems with those shots, the implication of self-harm and edgyness while I just had a lot of nosebleeds for a while and liked the previously stated aspects).

that's exactly what I said a more subjectless approach would work
I actually didn't even think it was blood because of the color, but most people would almost instantly connect this with some shit narrative about suicide or something
It's not that terrible, really the color is what kills it most for me if anything, moreso than the subject

This composition is the best so far of yours. Very nice that the space on the left is tree-free and how the smoke goes to the top-right.

Wut.
Most digital cameras if not all have far more dynamic range in the shadows than the highlights, you can easily underexpose and recover 2-3-4-5 stops without noise depending on the camera, you can't recover highlights anywhere near as easily, in fact underexposing knowing it can be corrected easily is a common technique used by anyone that knows what they're doing.
>>2812449
It's a common practice to overexpose. and pull highlights down.
Decreasing highlights has less noise than recovering shadows.
>>2812452
You don't know how your camera works.
>>2812452
Sure, but with my D750 I can raise the shadows like 4 stops before noise becomes an issue at lower ISO's, can only do like 1.5-2 stops of highlights before they start to look weird and lose detail. It's a fundamental property of the sensors, If you over-expose like 1 stop you might get a cleaner image but it's much riskier because you can clip highlights so much easier.
>>2812460
He does if he's a Canon user.
Non-isoless sensors generally prefer overexpose-and-pull-down to underexpose-and-push-up.
If the goal is simply to maximize DR, overexposing *just* to the point where your whites are about to clip is also the method.
So no, I think Anon probably has a decent clue, despite the parrot belching in his ear.
>>2812462
D750 is quasi-isoless.
D3300 is not.
You have to be more careful with exposure on a D3300, in both directions.
I'm new at photographing shit so please be gentle

Composition is good, though I'd get lower and closer then try shooting it again. Also those deformed trees off to the left ruin it a bit but can't blame you for that.

Ok. first of all, objectively look at this photo, why the fuck would anyone care about it? Do you honestly believe that if this was in a book, magazine or hanging up on someones wall, it would be embarrassingly forgettable?
There is literally nothing happening, there is no story, there is no emotion, there is nothing to attach you to this photograph. There is a man looking out the window and red bricks.
You are not close enough to show what type of man he is. you are not far enough away to set a scene. The bricks arent cool (or pp saturated enough) to carry the photo, this is a literal snapshit, why would you want critique on it?
>>2813208
This is funny and well shot, i can dig it, would be part of a good set. The only thing is i would be carefull not to shoot to many vagrants. It comes off played out and plebby, low hanging fruit etc. But cool photo, show me some more

The one possible thing you could have done to add some visual interest here would have been shooting it head-on so that the lines are at least straight and horizontal. As pure visual candy, lines and frame within a frame can always be used just to please the eye.
But you haven't done that here, and you also haven't found a story. You've just taken a cockeyed photo of an elderly Larry the Cable Guy after his career change to Larry the Window Repairman.

A big part of critique is discussing whether or not the artist achieved his goals with the finished piece. I can not tell what your goal is in this photo, as it seems like it was merely an excuse to use the camera. I can't critique the photo.

I'm not gonna give advice to some faggot who thinks his snapshits are on Ansel Adams' level
People who ask for constructive feedback usually get it, often very thorough feedback
>>2815177
to be fair, I don't think he meant to imply that his photo was as good as Ansels Adams. I think he was referring to the defined clouds and contrasts. Personally they don't remind me of Adams, but I think that was what he was getting at.
>>2814869
But yeah, this is a critique thread, nobody gives a shit about the before/after editing process. The images aren't resized. They are fairly uninteresting photos with bad to okay composition and framing. The processing isn't good either. It looks overdone to shit and unnatural.
There isn't much to say and the fact that you are breaking the rules with your posts anyway doesn't give anyone the incentive to critique your shit. This board isn't useful because you aren't using it correctly.
You didn't even bother (or appear to bother) critiquing others work. This is pretty much as important as having your own work critiqued in terms developing your eyes and skills to later apply to your photography. I say this assuming you are still a learner.
>>2815025

thanks a lot means a lot to me, this guy is an old friend of mine, he is a total outcast walked all around the earth, and now he spend his day next to this cheminey smoking weed we grow together over the summer, his father was a famous sculpture and made the three pieces of ceramique inside the cheminey, the painting of the cat is also pretty cool , it was painted by the builder of the house an english painter a litle bit famous. HIm and the owner of the house are best friends, so he just hang around and when it's summer he leave and walk around the country joining community of people living outside of society.
and the set up on the table we were drinking ti punch all afternoon, i took this picture while i was leaving slithly drunk and he was supposed to keep the house for like 2 weeks all by himself so it was kinda sad.

>>2815352
I don't ask unless I want something more portrait. If you're singling out someone in a crowd, they typically don't notice. I've walked past plenty of street shooters, no clue if they were shooting me or someone else.

That's the keyword. Nothing wrong with shooting superzoom, I did it for a while.

You must live in a real city, congrats!
I live in Minneapolis and have literally never seen a street photographer. I've seen people taking pics of bridges or whatever with a DSLR, but never shooting street.
It makes it hard, people react almost every time.

People really don't care, trust me. I've been shooting street (I wouldn't call it street but anyway) for the better part of 5 years and I've only been confronted 3 times. Most people really do not give a shit, especially if you're good at what you do.
I usually have an instant camera in my bag, most people will fizzle down if you offer to take their photo and then give them the instant print.

Get your crop on homie. All that symmetry in the center of the frame is ruined by the randomness outside of that area.

If you want to be taken seriously, never selective color again.
