How can you stand out as a photographer in a society where each person is exposed to literally thousands of photographs every day?
What's the point in even trying when you are competing against LITERALLY millions of other semi-pro photographers, and this does not even include the billion or so people who upload cell phone pics.
Is it even possible to stand out in this day and age?
Why compete? Why try to stand out? These are selfish, negative actions that will only create negative reactions.
Create for the joy of creation. That should be your goal.

I think he's considering it from the perspective of somebody who wants to become a professional photographer

I think that comes second
>millions
out of that millions many of them will give up because they cant take the criticism, gave up trying to get the right image, didnt believe in themselves or just trying to copy everyone else. They keep listening to what others tell them to do (not in terms of aesthetics and form) and they can never break out of the box of "common creativity"
Many photographers started out shit, slow and untrained. Only those who are patient, willing to be called "shit", never stopped learning and experimenting will succeed. Those who made it, create something for themselves not for anyone else..

Bingo. At the top of the ladder you have the photographers who are still just shooting what they want to shoot, and creating exceptional images because they love photography and have an exceptional gift.
As you move down the ladder you have all of the miserable worker bees who are just aping and emulating and copying the guys at the top, even if they don't particularly care for it. But they do it because they're trying to stand out more than the folks on the ladder beneath them, or next to them, or they're trying to move up a rung.
Create without any presumptions of success or fame or being "better" than the next guy and it'll take care of itself.

What the fuck was this taken with, a webcam from 2002?

Most photos taken are mediocre. Great photos still rise to the top.
It is hard to stand out. But hey, if you're good at what you do in a niche, you might stand out.
Until then, be great at something more marketable and make money for your hobby that way. Preferably something with a srsly hard degree.
'cause being the normal guy in an unqualified field like photography a lot of people would enjoy as hobby means getting little to no money.
If you're good and dedicated you'll get recognised in some shape or form. But you shouldn't care because you should be busy taking pictures.
Truly dedicated people get there no matter what. Sure they might not be the next james nachtwey but they'll be making a living from taking pictures and that alone is awesome.
>in a society where each person is exposed to literally thousands of photographs every day?
Good still images still stand the test of time and cause people to stop and stare. The medium might have changed but if you take a good picture people will still want to see it.
>What's the point in even trying when you are competing against LITERALLY millions of other semi-pro photographers
who fucking cares, just take pictures.
If all you care about is recognition then go do something less people are involved in like diving in piles of shit
