I can hardly say my knowledge is exhaustive, but my 105mm f/2.5 is bloody good.

i don't know about best but i like my nikkor 50mm f/1.4 which is a bit older than the one you've posted. sharp at f/2.8, comfortable, pretty.
180/2.8 ais (d version is practically the same lens with af)
105/2.5 ais (probably the highest regarded mf nikkor of all time. "Afghan Girl" taken with this lens on FM2)
75-150/3.5 e (70-210/4 was also around and had af version, but wasn't as sharp and had more ca)
50/1.4 ais (duh)
35/2 ais (duh)
28/2.8 ais (vivitar 28/2.8 close focus by komine factory is a good alternative for half to third the price)
15/5.6 (super wide that was so well corrected it had almost no distortion. Very rare, very expensive, very good.)
El NIkkor 85mm f1.8 the finest lens for portraits top tier
50mm macro with ringflah errrrrrrrrrrrrr!
35mm f2 top tier
old sko0ol 45gn for close up party snapshits but back then it was press only

I just picked up a nice FM with one of those on it and it's quite nice.

lol wut. I've got both the 135 2.8 and 105 2.5 and I can tell you that you're totally wrong.

>sharpness is the deciding factor whether a lens is better or not

Let's see sample photos. Should be easy enough to prove one way or the other.

If it's '60s no Ai I don't know, but if it's an ai/ais it should be basically perfect by f/2

>180/2.8 ais (d version is practically the same lens with af)
It's not, optical formula was changed since the 1st af version and glass elements added, for the better in this case (unlike the passage from the glorious 28 2.8 ais with crc to af, which was worsened)
Optical formula doesn't change from the first AF version till the last AF-D one (which is the current one)
It's a very nice lens anyway, I still own one and I'm not planning to sell it.

lens jumped me outta nowhere
I thought 40mm would be fucking weird but it isn't so.
I'm getting 18-55MM F3.5-5.6g bundled with my Nikon D5500 soon. I feel like this is a good purchase.
