Not him, but I do pretty good so long as I'm at least at 1/60 or above while panning (7/10). It's mainly getting used to the movement, and making sure to follow through (a lot like bird hunting if you've ever gone -- start the movement before you intend on hitting the shutter release and keep going after the shutter closes).
It's under 1/40 that I start having problems.

I find that the canon 70-200mm f4 is the best size and weight for me to pan with, this makes quite a difference to me
the most important thing for me is to get into a rhythm though, you want to line up a focus point with a part of the car, and sort of fall into the pan, keeping the point lined up with what you're aiming at, only way I know of to get better at this is to just keep practicing ad nauseam

I found that in most cases a monopod makes things worse for me. My pan is never as fluid on one and unless I'm at exactly the right angle from the line of travel, it just doesn't work out at all.

I pan with my 17-50 and 70-200 handheld, it does feel much better like that, especially when panning at unusual angles
I sometimes find that it's easier to pan with the 300 when using a monopod, the lowest speed I've been somewhat consistent with it handheld would be around 1/90s

Mode II for Canon, Sport for new Nikon lenses, Normal for older Nikons that choose between Normal and Active.
I don't know why Nikon felt it was necessary to drop Active for Sport when Normal did the same thing as Sport, while Active let you shoot from vehicles and what not.

my 300mm has IS, but I think it's somewhat broken/old
it tends to actually blur shots in low light, and can move unpredictably when panning, so I just leave it off most of the time now

I think I'm used to a quick auto focus from my 300mm f4 I've had for a few years. It's a great lens but want more range than being stuck at one focal length.
Going to try the Canon 100-400mm next, but would be a lot of money to buy.

Also anyone looking at the Tamron 150-600mm for motorsport, don't. Completely undoes the great AF on my 7Dmk2. So many shots would be ruined because it'd find something random to focus on as cars were coming and going. Spend the money on the proper Canon stuff if you can.

I've really wanted to work on getting some more motion blurred shots, I've felt the last few years that all my motorsport stuff was sitting back with a long lens and getting super fast shutter speed shots, which didn't actually convey the sense of speed.
So I'm really stoked with these as I've got a mix of the two styles.
But my issue is more that as I'm for the moment outside the fences, places like Silverstone offer very little variety and really only the longer lens/fast shutter speed shots as it's high fences everywhere. I'm gonna try get some like the F1 ones above >>2803670

Using wide and normals in pans gives you a lot of environment to appreciate. Also good in hairpin turns because there's a lot to see. Some tracks are better for it than others.

Visit some of the older tracks. F1 tracks are stupid and safe, so it's hard to get good pictures. Thankfully, the UK is rife with motorsports both professional and amateur. It should be easy to take pictures.

Yeah that photo of the Porsches came out good, but in so many cases the lens seemed to lose focus when others on my 7d haven't. Given that I've always heard that the 7d has the best af, and I feel that's justified, it's a pain when this happens.
In terms of tracks I completely agree that there's a lot that haven't been brought up to F1 standard, and I'll be going to a number. But the WEC doesn't go to those so it's the higher profile events I'm more disappointed about.

Sure, the WEC doesn't go to them. Although I hear Spa is reasonably photo friendly. But 24H Series, British GT, and touring car series still do. It's only the prototypes and GT2s you'll miss out on, and even then, you'd be planning for that kind of trip well in advance.

I know to either Laguna or COTA is a 10 hour drive one way for me, those being the closest big name tracks. Well, Long Beach is closer but that's still 6 hours one way.

Normally you'd park your car at one of the parking lots and walk from there, so you better have some solid walking gear.
The Karussell for example is about 45 minute walk from the closest parking lot, with a few crowded spots on the way. I'd suggest that route for everyone going there the first time. You can extend your route down to Mutkurve from there on

Brands is a cool track to shoot at with all the elevation changes. If you haven't been to any historic events you should go to some, awesome variety of cars and you're not fighting for good spots with other togs as much as at events like the BTCC

Go scout out the track if you haven't been before or look up photos others have done.
Should be able to get some panning shots, then maybe try some closer ups of the drivers as they're driving - hopefully get some shots of their eyes ect. Finally if there's any straights that you can position yourself looking back down you can get some shots of cars entering the corner and the ones in that background bokeh'd out.

you want to be a good distance away from the crowd, and shooting at long focal lengths
can be tricky timing it right though, people with bright clothes or very noticeable hats can mess up the effect when shooting through them

This nigga's right. BBAF isn't because it's faster. It's the same AF system either way. The difference, for motorsports at least, is enabling pre-focusing easier. Along with the usual pro-body ergonomic advantages.

it just takes getting a bit accustomed to, especially on lower-spec canon bodies (not sure if other makes are the same) that have mushy buttons with no discernible click

Look in to purchasing a CPL filter - it'll heavily reduce the reflections on the cars windows and reduce the reflections on the painted surfaces. This shot is also underexposed. Lots of detail is lost from the front bumper. Half poor lighting and half underexposed.

I'd straighten these up in post-processing but not a bad start, people can get some seriously good static car shots with just an iPhone so focus more on the composition, framing, where light is coming from and that what you're shooting is either interesting or an interesting angle.

Research the track and areas you can get to with low fences, know the timetable, if you're using a dslr look at the exif of some of the shots on here. As >>2819443 mentioned, he was trackside, which means the shots are at the height the cars are. Unless it really is a backwoods track you'll either be behind fences or above the cars so think about the angles you're shooting from too. You're not going to be getting pro level shots so just enjoy the racing, learn how the cars move on track and some good places to shoot from again. Talk to photographers at the race too.

I still consider myself to be a newbie, but here's some advice from me:
>practice panning a lot, try starting at wider focal lengths and 1/125-250s, and working down from there
>do lots of walking, try exploring the track a bit if you're new to it
>plan your walking around the circuit with the path of the sun somewhat, although don't discount shooting into the sun, it can give you some really nice results, especially when it gets low in the sky
>if shooting through fences, try to get as close as you're allowed to, preferably with a long lens (will probably still be troublesome if there's harsh light though)
>bring a polariser or something to cut light with if you want to practice panning at lower speeds, I try not to ever stop down past f/16 for pans
