Hello /p/ros.
Wedding photog here, found my portrait work has become very stale of late so borrowed a couple yesterday to take some experimental shots with some wilder compositions.
Main goals were to push myself to use primes only, try a list of ideas I have stolen from other photographers mainly considering the use of negative space and really nail separation of subject from the background.
Constructive abuse gratefully received.

6 Would have like a more interesting sky but for proof of concept it suffices.

Looking at it now I think my crop might be out on this one.
These are good, i like the scene selection and poses you chose.
However:
(1) They almost all have a "vignette" effect which looks instagram and cheap to me. It is much more apparent in the last two photos
(2) The lighting in >>2788807 is too harsh and kind of fucks up the background
(3) Her face in >>2788808 looks genuinely pained, i dont understand the need for this face or this photo
(4) The crop seems more proportional in 5 than in 6. 6 just has too much sky and feels like their bodies are cut off. For the effect you were going for i think 5 is as far as you should push it.
Overall nice job, good lighting (for the most part), sharpness, scenes etc.

For portraits, you always need to be aware of how they look when viewed not on a 40" TV screen, but smaller formats like 15x10 prints, facebook posts etc.
When your subjects fill approximately 3% of the picture (in pic 6 you could fit them in about 30 times in the rest of the frame...), it is just bad composition.
If the subject of your photo was something else and they were unimportant, that would be fine. But they are the important thing in the picture.
They same goes for the other pictures, but 6 is the most prominent example.
Also, just as a guideline, it usually looks better when their heads are above the centerline of the picture and not below it.

Number 1 is well-composed ;)
And as always, standard photography rules are meant to be broken -- but only deliberately.
>>2788803
Great photo - love the expressions. Wish for a firmer hand grip for the male
>>2788804
I like the action. Great timing on the shot. Unfortunately the location is a boring - dead foliage doesnt bring any merit to a couple picture. Consider a tight crop.
>>2788807
Again great expression. Like the hand holding. Consider a tighter crop
>>2788808
This shot involves directing. Shes holding onto him, and hes... deep in thought? Almost as if she is an ghost on his shoulder. Invoke interaction between the couple
>>2788810
At first glance they almost a heart. But again, direct on expression - looks like shes focused on something stuck on his teeth.
>>2788812
I feel like I know what style youre aiming for. IMO empty, vast backgrounds are not meant for couple shots since they *bettlittle* the subject. You kind of want to be surrounded by something grand, extravagant, crazy if theyre being print
Anyway youre on the right track by experimenting and going forward with primes. One big thing about being a wedding phototog is not only knowing the technicalities of your camera but knowing how to direct a story - that means locations, expressions, and themes; dont be afraid to have a vision as youre writing their story.
>>2788848
>if theyre being print
i meant to say
>if they appear far way
>>2788857
I disagree with the criticism about poor composition. Save the very last one, I like your use of the environment and empty space. For the last image, it's way too bottom heavy. No criticism at all about composition.
>>2788857
What did you expect? You specifically asked for feedback, you stated how you usually shoot and what new approach you used.
It's not abuse if you're open to feedback, which everyone should be :3
ive seen that woman posted here before, so hot. brb.
>>2788803
Put them in better outfits. They look like they're going out to the grocery store.
>>2789299
my thoughts exactly
ok maybe the similar jackets are fine outdoorsy like ok
but those fucking beaten up jeans god damn it and her scarf
Your composition is fucking boring, and the scenery uninspiring. If you're gonna do something as cliche ass couple in the woods shoot at least find an interesting spot. Technically though they are solid.
>>2788803
also your processing.

It's a wedding shoot. They want bright happy warm shit like that.
>>2789389
All couples shoots are boring and generic as fuck
Post one shoot that is interesting, you cant
>>2789418
Erin Holsonback is the photographer, Ella Gale and M.K. Paulsen the couple.
There's like 10 more from the photoshoot.

I find couple shots to be tricky indeed. Directing two people to interact and not look staged is tricky. Paring that with wider compositions is trickier still.
I shot this couple using an 11mm or so setting after noticing the tree provided an interesting seat as well as long line across the frame.
>>2788812
A fan of most of them except this one. The blown out sky was okay in the BW shot but is hella distracting here.
>>2789418
All couple shoots are difficult to pull off. That is quite a generalisation to say they are all boring.
>>2789437
No idea what this is. Holding a small ball of foil? I often don't mind lifting the blacks and dropping out contrast but something about it feels contrived in this image.
And if you are in a studio environment what need is there to shoot at f1.8 or whatever this was shot at? Soft AF.

>>2789392
Jesus, that is fuck awful. Were you trying to make them look like oompa loompas?
>>2790486
Make your attempt at it. Be sure to make it marketed towards a couple who want wedding photos.
>>2790493
Different anon, never tried wedding photos before.
They want dreamy stuff, right? So I put dehaze into the negatives and I made it all warm yellow fall colours and I tried to make his teeth look whiter but they started looking fake really fast.
OP here.
>>278929
>>2789384
It was a practice shoot so I didn't care what they were wearing. Not going anywhere near my blog or social media. Just wanted them to be warm and therefore happy.
>>2789389
Interesting point, can you point me in the direction of something I should be aspiring too?
>>2789417
I beg to differ. Whoever posted >>2789392 made a mistake in that this style of processing is very 'now'. Engagement and wedding photo's have to last and this style of 'instagram filter' processing is going to look real old real quick.
>>2789607
I like the shot, a little over processed for my taste but a solid idea. Thanks for the feedback.
