It's interesting, the lens seems to behave like a 300mm or more lens, the way it renders bokeh and compresses the background. I find this fascinating, almost abusing the lens and light to my desire.

Just this, I just manually stop down the lens, disconnect it off the body, reverse it, and hold it up to the mount. Has a working distance of about 3 inches, and a ridiculously shallow DOF, as you can see, not in exif but shot at f/11 and with a flash at half power.

The speedlite is just portable. But it allows me to use 100 ISO, which makes for some scarily crisp photos

Your cheapest way in will likely be a cheap 50mm 1.8 on whatever decent but cheap body you can find. You can use a reversing ring for extreme magnification or extension tubes for less magnification.
As for light, generally you do macro with a ring light, but those are really expensive for real ones. You can probably find online instructions for rigging up LEDs which'll take care of you for a little while.
A real macro setup will take multiples of your $400 in the lens alone...
Sorry friend, this just isn't a cheap area of photography. You can kinda kludge it on the cheap, but for great results, you're gonna have to spend.

You could try to make do with some 5000k-5500k-ish LED bulbs or rectangular battery-powered LED lamps.

A6000. Powerful sensor, has a very cheap 30mm macro (lowest price here is around $180), and is one of the best options to adopt some "macro" zoom lens like an old MF Nikon 28-105mm- old macro zooms being some of the cheapest options around for such lenses.

DOF is alright, you need to decide what part you want in focus. With such an angle on flowers you want to focus on the stems, maybe on the petals. The more microdetail it has, the more you want it in focus. The rest can blur away. Also don't forget to close the aperture down to at least f/16. Macro distance focus has different optical properties so diffraction is different than at medium-infinity focus.

Not him but I did the math. If you're doing an event, you're probably not shooting on shit film, so lets call it Portra 400, which can be had at normal stores in bundles for about $5 per roll. Let's say you hunt for it and find a high volume discount from someone shady somewhere on ebay and you can get it for $4 a roll. 800 photos is about 23 rolls of film, and you probably don't want to process that at home, nor do you want to scan it all yourself, so you're sending it out and having it scanned. Let's call it $8 per roll for development, scanning, and having the negs shipped back to you (Very conservative in my experience, but why not. Benefit of the doubt). Assume overnight shipping both ways, you'll have them back maybe 4 days after the event, look through the low res lab scans and tag which ones you want to scan higher res yourself (assuming you have a $150 home scanner, so you don't have to pay for high res TIFF scans from a lab which are stupid expensive in bulk)
So:
$50 for a (shit) camera
$150 for a scanner
$92 (plus shipping) for film stock
$184 for dev/scan/ship
+time spent waiting and scanning (slower turn-around can mean less clients in general, many of whom want jpegs same day)
So starting from scratch, and taking 800 photos on a film camera will cost you:
$476 in an extremely conservative estimation.
Not really much cheaper than a used entry level DSLR, which you buy once and use for years.
Let's assume that a guy taking photos of a dandelion is probably just a hobbyist, and won't be making money. Let's say he takes 5000 photos a year.
An entry level camera will generally last to 80,000 photos before the shutter breaks, so that's 16 years out of a $700 camera lens kit.
80,000 photos in 16 years on film (even shit film) even on some shit film like Fujicolor 200, plus processing, shipping, time spent scanning, etc. is going to cost him more than $15,000 over that same time frame (assuming $7 per roll total).

I'm still trying to make this lens I've got work. It's the Yasuhara Nanoha Macro Lens (pic related). The DOF is so shallow and you need to be really close to the subject which makes it really difficult to use in the field.
Even though it was taken with a rather shit camera (Fujifilm S4400), I'm surprised with quality of some macro images.

I've switched back to a Nikon system and I currently don't have a macro lens. Any advice on what lens to choose? I don't really take photos of bugs or anything so working distance isn't really important, so I'm leaning towards a 60mm rather than a 105mm since the 60 is cheaper, smaller, and has less longitudinal chromabs which are a real pain in the ass with macro photography. I'm not sure if I want the AF-D or AF-S, though. I've used the AF-D and it was great and really not lacking in any way, but I'm sort of tempted to get the latest and greatest.

The D lenses are plenty sharp, and have better manual focus and aperture rings, important features for a macro lens. The 105 is better at infinite than the 60, so if you want to use your lenses as normal ones, there's that to consider. The 60 is significantly cheaper though, and still plenty sharp.
If you care about 1:1, you need the D. Or newer. The AIS lenses only reached 1:2, and required extension tubes. If that's not a problem, the AIS lenses are even cheaper. The 55's actually not good at infinite, unlike the 60 which is acceptable at infinite. On the plus side, the AIS lenses have the best haptics for macro work.
If you want to squeeze every last bit out, the 105 2.8G VR is definitely the best of the best right now.

Here's my quick, dirty, and dangerous macro budget idea.
Step 1: Buy any cheap DSLR, ideally a rebel t3 or something with tons of aftermarket or a Pentax DSLR*. Amazon used, eBay, craigslist WHATEVER. Make it 12 MP or better. The lens will be more important to you desu.
Step 2: Get any lens that fits that mount. Preferably a sharp prime. Pentax DSLR: get one of the old zoom lenses that has the macro zoom setting - it works great.
Step 2b for non Pentax: Get a cheap macro extension tube ( for low magnification ) or a reversing ring (for high magnification, also quite a bit more troublesome).
Step 3: Beg borrow steal find H U S T L E to get several lamps and halogen bulbs for them.
Step 4: Get any kind of tripod, a "floor" one (as opposed to mini tripods) will let you do overhead shots and will be more flexible. Get some sort of software that will let you do focus stacking if you need big DOF. Get or make a diffuser for light.

I would advise to buy a real macro lens. Any macro lens with 1:1 ratio.
Real macro lenses can be set to have very small appertures, and it will be easier to focus.

The number one thing this thread is lacking is lighting. A lot of these photos could be pretty decent but the lighting just isn't there. Just because you're working at much much smaller scale doesn't mean that lighting doesn't matter. Yes it's harder at this size but most of the rules stay the same. The tricks you know for portraits, landscapes, still life, etc still work and apply, you just have to be willing to figure out how to scale it down.
That said you can run into the problem where what would work with normal subject matter doesn't because the subject isn't familiar enough to the viewer. Dynamic or interesting subject matter becomes abstract with what would normally be excellent lighting. You may find yourself having to introduce your subjects quite clinically to viewers before moving on to more interesting work.

The novelty of it wears off quick though. Every amateur photographer does it at least for one week in their lives and never does it again.

is the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G actually a good macro lens?

Yeah, I guess. I see absolutely no reason to buy it though when you can get old 60mm f/2.8 AF or AF-D Micros for dirt cheap. Those will give you a bit more reach which is very helpful for macro and even if your camera can't drive screwdriver autofocus lenses it's not a big deal with these since macro is usually done in manual focus anyway.

Close focus on a normal lens isn't macro. Go look up the term "macro photography" and see what you need to do it.
