Sweet.

These two are when the Caterpillar is preparing to turn into a chrysalis. Unlike moths they actually bust out of their skin instead of "spinning" a cocoon.

Reminds me of my science textbook from elementary school.
I didn't manipulate the colors on any of these
I did clone out dust and lint to make em look more clean.
This is one of my favorites

This one never came all the way out. Like 30% of the butterflies were born with defects and died. I think I raised like 50 of them.

One chrysalis was almost white, it was really cool. I think the butterfly came out normal colors though

Thanks for sharing. These were really cool.
Did you enjoy raising the caterpillars?
>>2775713
it's kind of terrifying.
>>2775718
Yeah it was pretty fun, I just wish more survived. I learned quite a bit about them in the process too. I want to raise a bunch of different bugs this coming summer.
So cool man
Great stuff Matt. Have you considered other insects?
>>2775789
Ive got some moth pictures ill add when i get home
Thanks for posting these. This was an interesting thread.
>>2775711
So inspiring.
Where do you get your caterpillars?
I love insect photography but the ones in nature are so hard to capture, and I've accidentally killed scorpions trying to get the right shot.
What do you do with the butterflies when you're finished?
This is one I took in the bush in queensland australia. It's also fucking intimidating walking through Aussie jungle, snakes, crocodiles, huge spiders everywhere. Incredible subjects, but you feel like prey out there.

Whats that picture you posted?
>>2776076
You can buy like plastic pet carriers, Image related.
The caterpillars eat milkweed so if you search that during breeding times you can find the eggs or baby caterpillars. For the really small ones just put pantyhose over the lid so they cant sneak through the cracks.
once they made chrysalis i peeled the silk stuff they addhear to the roof with and tied dental floss to it and hung them inside of a popup mesh hamper so they would have plenty of room for drying out when they hatched, then i would just release them
If you have more active bugs, pop them in the fridge for a few minutes and they slow down. but once they warm up be ready to catch them again.
The key is identifying what the insect you want to capture eats, then you can find them much easier. and to make them more docile just get them a tad bit cold.
>>2776076
I live in the midwest so there isnt much that can kill me.
I guess you trade safety for more interesting species though?
I also saw a cool technique for catching bugs, haven't tried it. But you hang up a white sheet, and point a bright light at it at night. The bugs come flocking to it, then you catch the ones you want.

>It's also fucking intimidating walking through Aussie jungle, snakes, crocodiles, huge spiders everywhere.
The majority of snakes and crocs are going to be fucking gone as soon as they see/hear you, they're more scared of us in most cases.
What you should really be scared of is getting lost out in the bush with no water.
>>2776092
Well thats why I stick to the rivers ;0

stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to

One strobe with softbox behind, as the backdrop, one strobe in front/above and then white paper curled underneath to bounce light from above back under the chrysalis
