Hey /p/ I'm looking to enter some of my photos into a contest at a local gallery for highschool artists. Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Subject is alright but is not placed in any way that's particularly interesting and all the cars are distracting. I'd have followed him more or thought about whether he'd cross a background I could frame him on better
>>2771824
angle is really weird ok subject and great textures
>>2771827
incredibly boring but nice textures. could have balanced it a bit more by including more of him in the shot
>>2771832
really like this for some reason the background is a bit distracting but his pose is great and everything is balanced
>>2771835
weird subject placement annoying background needless black and white
You pay attention carefully to your subjects but not so much your backgrounds. Some of these would be excellent if you put some more time into the backgrounds
Also when doing close portraits be careful how you frame them so you can get a good balance without cutting off too much or too little

You have a long way to go. By all means, submit what you like. The work seems to say ”uninspired suburban kid who received a DSLR for christmas”
You should ask yourself why you take pictures, and don’t bullshit yourself with some cliche shit like ”I want to capture the world around me.” If you answer yourself honestly, it will greatly improve your photography, and you will gain insight and direction for your work.
>>2771877
its funny, because most if not all of your work screams "uninspired suburban kid who received a DSLR for christmas". sorry senpai

I knew it I would've find this comment as a reply lol

Watch the sodium, fags. It's good advice.
>>2772719
lel you tripfag all over this fucking board giving out weird, unsolicited advice. Don't really think you have a leg to stand on there

You guys really like this work? You find this thought provoking? I'm not defending a tripfag or anything, but he's absolutely right.
>>2771822
Alright? Too far away, with nothing interesting and no clear idea.
>>2771824
>good textures
lol, once again, not close enough and pointless dutch angle.
>>2771827
ok portrait, boring background AND FUCKING GET CLOSER.
>>2771832
just no, boring background, weird editing, and being so far makes it look like your autistic friend was trying to hug you.
>>2771835
better subject than your previous portrait but still boring background.
>>2771840 >>2771842 >>2771845
not worth even posting
Could do well in a highschool competition, but you are still young and have a ways to go.
There is not an ounce of constructive criticism in this thread. This is why its a fucking shit board. A high school kid comes looking for advice and you faggots shit on him. His pics aren't that great but I'm willing to bet yours aren't either. This has always been a board for mediocre hobbyists to shit on each other.
You couldn't say anything even remotely useful if you knew how (which you don't because you're all full of shit)

Nice tones. OK composition but there's nothing really "to" the photograph. Solid snap but nothing with much substance. If you wanted to give it some, try finding a subject and isolating them completely (from cars, people, etc.) on the streets WHILE also including the background. Harder to do. This may be why your picture of the kid on the balcony has some of that pop to it.

>>2771827
Pretty much the same problems here. You need to find a subject worth shooting. The pics themselves are good but figuring out form is only the first step to taking a good picture.
>>2771832
I like this shot. 1) because its earnest. I feel like its not really pretending to be anything. This is probably a friend of yours on your/their back porch and you guys are having a solid time. It vibes with a lot of edgy 'skate' or counterculture photography happening right now. I think the tones could use a bit more editing and I can see very obvious photoshopping on his right hand (his right).
>>2771835
Same problem. Solid portrait with some solid edits but nothing to it to make it worth anything outside of it being a good portrait of some dude.
Though, you're only in high school. There's still a ways to go. I sucked in high school but practice will never fail you. I take pictures wherever I go and its done me wonders in all the time I've been shooting.
If anything, I don't think you know what you're looking for in a photo just yet. You'll figure it out tho.

>all this pent up rage
how yall must be really jealous of people that take photos/have friends.
Should have shot these with a Sony, these would have turned out so much better.
Like was said previously, pay more attention to your backgrounds. I think both of these portraits
>>2771827
>>2771835
had potential, but the background hinders them, doesn't help them. For example, the second one would be fantastic at a bus stop or a train station or in front of a store. It would kind of make you think this is a man on his way about town. Instead, in this instance, it's just a guy in front of what, a school? A community center? I have no clue what's going on.
All in all, I think I see your direction. You should take more photos, and challenge yourself because you certainly have budding talent. You might as well enter, not to win but to see what it would take TO win. Or hey, you might win. Who knows
Thank you so much to everyone who gave criticism. Even the muhmegapickles guy. Even if his comment seemed a little hard on me it did make me think about myself as an artist and I think i'm better because of it.
