Has anybody here ever joined a photography club? I don't want to learn how my camera works but I'm hoping there's an old guy with awesome composition and subject knowledge who will do walks around my city giving me advice.
I keep turning in a gearfag and realise I just need to go outside and shoot some stuff instead of googling lenses!

It's all about the gear man, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Real pixel peepers know that when it comes to photography image quality is king. If your equipment can shoot optimally in any setting then you are golden. Composition is just a meme of timing and luck. Just take pictures of what looks good to you. Also you will meet gearfags in many stages of life.

After a while I get cravings and look up the prices of cameras.
After a shooting session I'll review the photos I took and critique them in my head but after I'm bored of doing that I theorize what lenses and cameras are around.

This guy is a troll
Go join a club, take pictures, get into film, do anything BUT rely on /p/ as your *main* source of info. There is good advice here but you have to know how to weed out the shitposters.

I don't think he's trolling but being sarcastic and satirical.
However I'm amazed how little there is here with regards to composition or analysis of famous photographers' work. Critique threads are just 10 submitters to one actual critique.
I recently bought two photography books: Light, Gesture and Color; and also Read This if You Want to Take Good Photographs. I would recommend both but the latter goes a little too basic for me (has a glossary containing aperture and depth of field for instance).

It's also been freezing here so unpleasant to go out shooting in.
Do you guys wear fingerless gloves?

If you can't operate your camera with heavy gloves on than you should stop using toy cameras.

>awesome composition and subject knowledge
Old guys in photography clubs will probably be as gear faggotty as young ones.
Subject knowledge comes from research. ie if you want to what kind of train it was thet you just photographed ask a train nerd not a camera nerd.
For composition you just got to keep looking and doing. Even for old guys the the good ones are usually little gems in a sea of shit.
No one can tell you how to shoot the stuff you see in your head you've just got to keep working at it. Every so often you'll get a good one but don't underestimate the bad ones, they're important too. They are the cake that supports the cherry at the top

yes gear is king. but once you have the right gear, it's really up to skill. Still people can do amazing jobs with poor gear. of course your skill is limited by your gear, but you learn to adapt.

>I just need to go outside and shoot some stuff
^^ You answered your question; just do this.
Shoot at least 20 frames a day (not snapshits). Wait 7 days and then review your week old frames. Pick the 3-5 that are the best. Let their quality inform the next day's shooting.

>B&W shot of homeless people
FUCK THAT TRIGGERS ME EVERY TIME

>composition is a meme
Holy shit, 0/10 troll
Good composition makes a bad camera look good.
Bad composition makes a great camera look bad
Composition is king.

he's right though in that good glass + sensor = edge to edge sharpness and crispness which will make a photo that looks bad on any other camera, good on the ultimate camera
this is also why people who take the same fucking photo of landscape as everyone else, but do it on MF/LF film, are fucking adored on /p/ and in general
they have a gimmick/unique gear setup that makes their photos different from 99% of people
>>2770429
Incorrect. Composition is second, third, fourth, or nineteenth to content, exposure, and any number of other things.
You can't compose a good picture out of a cloudless sky.
You can't compose a good picture out of a blocked up shadow covering the frame.
You can't compose a good picture out of a blurred to hell mess.
Composition is important, but definitely not king.
>>2770899
composition is absolutely essential for any photo worth looking at.
>>2770330
But don't you get the juxtaposition of poverty (the homeless man) and wealth (Gucci). It's supposed to trigger you because it's a commentary on our society. Black and white is the best option for this because the tones are a perfect representation of the anachronism presented in the photo. It's all about the dichotomy of poor and rich. You can see how the photo is an attack commercialism and consumerism. It's a very unique and novel idea. You would understand if you went to art school.
>>2770958
It's so fucking cliché it hurts.
I guess the reason why nobody here talks about composition is because it's so subjective and situational. Whereas gear is tangible and quantitative.
I'd love to talk about composition but no idea what to talk about it.
So... No photography club members here?

Mate once you get past the hurdle of technical competance than I would say composition is everything. If you have a vision you'll primarily be creating it through composition followed by colour and contrast. That's at least how I feel about it
