How to achieve this in the cheapest way?

I currently have a softbox (80cm x 50cm or so), a strobe and an external flash.

D750 or D810 for weddings? Assuming not able to afford D4/5

does lens correction with the profile in photoshop really fix all the distortion?
>>

Giant assed sheet of butcher paper.

You can see her shadow on the background so they didn't bother blowing that out. Use the shadow's directionality to determine softbox placement (probably up and right of camera, I didn't look too closely). Use your off external as fill...I'd probably place it about camera level and to the left of camera.

>>2766574
D750 or D800. The main improvements to the 800 from the 810 were video-specific.

Anyway, not enough info -- can the extra money saved from getting the cheaper one help plug some other hole in your kit? What body are you shooting now? Would it be better to start putting together the 2.8 trinity for you? Do you have battery powered monolights?
>>
>>2766079

You could try doing the V-Flat thing, a lot of speedlight shooters swear by them. http://scottkelby.com/the-scoop-on-v-flats/

>>2766580
That answered it, thank you. It would be a ground up build, already know what I would need for lenses/flashes/triggers/stands etc. just don't know Nikon's body eco-system. I'm making the assumption their full frame bodies have focus motors?

I want to edit my Fuji raw files in Lightroom but I heard that Lightroom fucks up the colors.

Can I alternatively use another program to convert them to tiff, then export that file to LR? If so what program would you recommend? I tried Photo Ninja but photo ninja already did pre adjustments to the Fuji Raw files which fucked them up
>>
>>2766963
Lightroom is pretty good with the colors, but pretty poor for the fine details. Yes, you can use other programs for the initial conversion to TIFF and it will work just fine. That's how I do my B&W work with my Fuji. I use Photoninja to get all the detail out in color, and normalize the image, export as a lossless tiff, import into Lightroom, and work as normal.
>>
>>2766982
but when you import into photo Ninja, it automatically does some corrections to your raw files right? That's what's bothering me personally
>>
>>2766993
You can remove everything it does automatically, and strip it out to the most basic form there is. You can even remove the XTtans correction, leaving you with a very dramatically green photo.
>>
Cool didn't want to make a thread.

How do i achieve photographs like pic?

I'm looking to make a sort of retro/grainy/vintage feel. Is it edited after the image is taken or is there settings on the camera that will achieve this?

I'm an absolute beginner at this and just recently ordered a Sony RX100m2 so technically i still don't even have a camera.

These photos are emulating the look of color negative film. So you can either start shooting film, or download the VSCO film presets for Lr.
>>
>>2767347
That is almost entirely good scenes, and good light. You want bright soft light, and raised contrast. If you aren't getting looks like this, you're either in dim rooms, or shooting in bright direct sunlight .Notice the shadows aren't hard and defined, they're soft and filled in. This means there's light coming from lots of directions, which means the sun is being diffused and scattered.

>>2767351
thanks guys. yeah i was figuring out the contrast thing myself fucking with my shitty phone. can't wait to get the real camera in so i can actually start replicating similar photographs.

>babbies first DSLR
I want to mostly take photography in the day/night of me wearing clothing (so think fashion shoots ect) I would also like this to record nice enough video for 1080p on youtube as I plan on shooting youtube videos in the future. I also do photography for my Military Unit as well, they provided me with a Power Shot SX50 HS but it kind of blows, the zoom is fine but indoors the shoots look fairly shit. My understanding of the SX50 is that it can zoom pretty far and thats about it. Im not sure how photography and motion really come together, but I would like it if I could take pictures of moving people/objects and it not just appear as a blur. My price range is about 500-1000, but if there is some kind of "perfect" DSLR that will be the end all to my photography needs that is out of that price range I could certainly save money over time for it. I am looking at the D90 right now as an affordable DSLR that maybe I can invest money into better lenses later on. I am also looking at the D5200. Thanks in advance and my apologies if this question is very common/already answered frequently.
>>
>>2767423
Pick up a decent used, mid-range body and a 50mm 1.8. You can get the D5100/5200 pretty cheap used, and the nifty fifty will far outperform any of the kit lenses.

Buying used is the way to do it honestly.

The 50mm will be ~75mm full frame equivalent, meaning it'll look great for fashion style shoots and most of what you need to do. The Nikons also come with a 18-55mm kit lens so that would cover you for wider shots
>>
I have a d810 and need to shoot video for houses. I need a wide angle lens and a one for interior shooting such as close ups of kitchen ovens. I need a good tripod that can pan and tilt and probably a slider too. I just need a bit of guidance/advice about which lens, tripod and slider to actually get. Any help would be great , I'm feeling a little stupid/overwhelmed about what to invest in

>>2767343
The easiest way to do this is to use a plugin or external editor. /p/ has a boner for VSCO for some reason, but I prefer the Google Nik suite, especially Color Efex Pro and Analog Efex. I paid $300 for my pre-Google version of CEP alone, $150 for the entire Nik suite is an absolute bargain in my opinion.

>>2767468
I like the 20 2.8 a lot for an ultrawide, but it has some distortion and I'm not sure how that'll do for video, plus it's kinda slow. You might want to look at one of the fast Rokinon/Vivitar/Bower/etc wides if you're on a budget, MF isn't an issue for video and the optical quality is great, plus they're cheap, and they're fast enough for video.

For the longer lens, I'd probably take a 50 or even a 35, any longer and you'll find yourself without enough space to shoot in a house. A first party 50 1.8 is probably fine, or again, you could try the Korean MF lenses.

I have a Dracast tripod for video and like it a lot, it was cheap, it's stable and sturdy, and has a nice pan head. You could go with a similar Manfrotto if you want to spend a bit more.

One last idea, though, with what you're looking at spending, it might be worth looking at a good camcorder instead of video-specific lenses for your DSLR. I have a Canon XA20 and it's absolutely spectacular, with a great zoom range, awesome IQ, a fast lens, and the small sensor means plenty of DoF at big apertures, which is good for real estate work. I've used mine to shoot behind the scenes stuff for trailers, DVD extras, etc and it's blown me away, and have also done some motorsports with it.

What does focal length actually mean? Like what is 50mm?
>>
If I buy a lens adaptor for my full frame DSLR, will it be exactly the same as my film SLR? The lens is presumably further away because of the adaptor..?
>>
How often do you guys fuck up your photos by missing focus or setting the wrong exposure or just not framing the scene well? I know things like exposure can be fixed in post, but focus, not so much. Just got back from shooting, took about 300 - 400 photos, shot the same subject 3-4 times each to give myself a buffer for fuck ups. Still only end up with around 10 photos composed the way I liked and few of them still have noticble missed focus.

I know nothing about post processing, what software do you guys recommend? Take into account that I'm a poorfag.
I found RawTherapee and I've heard of GIMP, what are your thoughts?
>>
>>2767863
They're fine. Also lightroom+photoshop is only $10/month, so you might still be able to afford it, depending on just how poor of a poorfag you are.

Beyond that, just start googling up tutorials.

First tool I'd recommend you learning inside and out are the Curves/Levels tools -- mainly the curves tool, but I put them together because they're really similar in function.
>>

Looks like it was made on film
>>
>>2767831

>>
when shooting digital you can choose what iso you use, but if you are shooting analogue can you set your iso camera setting to something different than iso of the film you are using to get darker/lighter photos like with a digital camera?
>>
>>2767831
judging by the picture and the album you posted, if you're not already shooting on a film camera, you should. Look into different cameras, filters, and the effects of different films.
>>
>>2767932
You can, yes. it's called pushing and pulling (Higher and lower ISO, respectively)
But you can't vary that value in the middle of the roll. You can shoot ISO 400 at ISO 3200 but you have to stick with it for the full roll, because the way you make it work is by developing the film differently to account for it, and if you have pulled one image, and pushed another on the same roll, you can only develop the roll of film to account for one of them.

What's the difference between focal length and 35 equiv?
>>
is 35mm on a crop pretty much the same thing as a 50mm on a ff?
>>
>>2769023
Yep.
>>
>>2768263
Focal length is the measurement from the optical center of the lens to the focal plane.

"35mm equiv" tells you the field of view of the lens, in relation to what it would look like on a full frame camera.

A 35mm lens on an APS-C camera is still 35mm, because the distance from the optical center to the sensor doesn't change at all, but the field of view does, so it's a 35mm lens but a 50mm full frame equivalent.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to just get a lens that works with your current camera?
>>
>>2769031

I think there's a chart that will tell you what nikon mounts are compatible with what cameras. If that's not modified for AI things might get inconvenient for you.
>>
>>2769031

It's like 35 bucks to convert it to ai-s so that it'll mount on a full frame camera.

You're still a fuckboy for "feeling restricted". 50mm is longish and cramped on full frame too, so if you're expecting a magic bullet when you move up to FF you're going to be disappointed. Learn to work within your limits and you'll be a better photographer.

Assuming the Exif is correct, then no.

Full frame is a sensor that is equal in size to a piece of 35mm film. The Lumix G1 has a sensor that is about four times smaller than that.

No, 35mm film like pic related.
The measurements of a full frame sensor are 36 mm Ɨ 24 mm

It's called full frame because digital cameras started out with smaller sensors, that "cropped" out the center of what would have been the full scene had a 35mm film been used, and when the larger 36 mm Ɨ 24 mm sensors came out, they were able to capture the "Full frame" of what would have been seen by a shot taken on 35mm film.

If I'm shooting a still subject, is there any reason to use single shot instead of AI servo? The only thing I can think of is not being able to focus and recompose, but I heard focus and recompose is shit anyway if you're shooting with a wide open aperture. Wouldn't AI servo be more likely to keep a subject in focus?

Yes if you get a zenit you will have that smooth film look.

Because it's a film camera.

You know, film isn't that scary! The cost of a good film camera, developing gear, and maybe a cheapo scanner like a wolverine is still much cheaper than a decent digital camera!

Honestly, come over to the film side. You'll love it.
>>
>>2769354
Look at the image's properties when you're looking at the file in windows explorer.

First, the Panasonic gm1 or whatever isn't full frame, but you can also figure that out by looking at the camera properties (97mm focal length equivalent) and later it says in the photograph properties that it's a 45mm focal length. That focal length disparity is a tell tale sign alone that shows that it was taken off of a crop baby camera. It's because of the smaller field of view for a given camera.

Fool Frame is not a crutch. Full frame will not make your composure better. Reading photo books, analyzing other's work, and critiquing your own makes for good photographs.

Going to give my girlfriends XTi to my younger brother since he wants to get into photography, and i got her an a6000 to replace it.

Found a 50mm f1.8 i can get on ebay for under $100, any other cheap basic lenses i could find him? might get him an old manual pentax 135mm since i love mine on my sony, only lens she had was the kit 18-55 f3.5-5.

What's a good beginners book? Should i get a basic howtophotag or an How2xti book?

Should i worry about getting him a flash?
I can act like a jew with my sony and use it as a bounce flash by holding it up, since i can do that i don't really know how often i need to use a flash and dunno if its worth getting him a cheap one or not.

Figure i can bundle him up a nice little beginners package for his birthday, and if he doesnt like photography it was less than $200 wasted.

Does anyone know if its worth installed a custom firmware to give him a couple more features? It is an old XTi not one of the newer ones.

Hey guys just wondering something about ISO

On my camera it has like normal iso and then expanded iso

How's it expanded? Like how is ISO 125 different than expanded ISO 80 or 100?
>>
>>2770826
Expanded ISO's are sort of analogous to using digital zoom, in that it's a software function and not a hardware one. It's a digital extrapolation on the part of the camera's image processing to guess what the image would look like at those higher ISOs. You'll lose dynamic range in your highlights using Lo ISO settings, and you'll lose a shitload of DR and gain a ton of noise at Hi ISO settings.

Regular ISO is based upon the sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light. Expanded ISO is like bringing up exposure in post in Lightroom.

>i'm thinking of getting into astronomy as a hobby

The Ricoh is equivalent to a 28mm f/2.8. Given the rule of 500 (or 600 if you want to push it), you could do a 500/28=17 second exposure without star trailing. At f/2.8 and 17 seconds you wouldn't have to have too high an ISO for a usable exposure, I would think.

Probably not an ideal setup for astro but usable.

How does a roll of 120 film prevent light from going into the edges? Is it magic?

I've been shooting film for a while now and I still can't figure out how a roll of 120 prevents light from hitting the film when it's not in the camera. From my experience it works but how?

I never have this paranoia with 35mm. Even if some of the roll is sticking out I know the small piece of magic foam will block out the sun. I want to get a canister for my 120 film for after it's exposed because it looks so unprotected.
>>
>>2767468

Read into video tripods with a fluid head. Or a monopod. Depending on your budget you can achieve smooth camera movements for between $50-500+

>>2767507
Many cameras synch at 1/250 or so. This means that the bottom half of your frame will be blacked out.

The Nikon D70 and many point and shoots don't suffer this. I've used a Nikon P7100 for a shoot and the flashes synched all the way up to 1/2000. At ISO 100 with controlled lighting and a decent lens any PaS looks great!

>>2767532
My rule of thumb is one good photo out of every 20-30 if I am winging it. If I plan compositions with still life I can get better ratios. Don't worry too much so long as you are netting good shots.

>>2767831
The easiest way is just to PP your digital photos. I use AlienSkin Exposure in Lightroom and just adjust settings till I get the look I want. Ain't that hard.

>>2770858
People will hate me for this but your first couple of days of shooting won't be hurt by shooting stuff around your house. Learn the effect of the Exposure Triangle on how it effects light, DOF and motion blur. After 1 or 2 afternoons you can start focusing on composition and getting out doors.

So I have a D7100 and a 50mm 1.8 AF D which should by all means work with the internal autofocus motor on the camera, but for some reason it just doesn't, no matter what I try and change on the camera and in the settings.
The internal motor works perfectly for other non- AF-S lenses, like my 10.5MM F2.8G ED AF, but won't even try with my 50mm, which is a bummer, because it means I usually end up using the 18-55mm kit lens from my old camera instead which works wonderfully in it's own right, but not when I want to shoot wide open in lower light or narrower DoF.

Any ideas?

do i get more information out of a sensor if i give it a longer exposure, ISO being equal? for example:

I'm specially looking at dynamic range and details within shadows.

>>
>>2771513
Yep. Tried it on and off and still nothing.
Also, probably part of the same thing, but I'm pretty sure when it's on 22 with the red dot clicked in, I should be able to change the aperture from the camera dial, but doesn't.
>>
>>2771484
Not really, other than a higher Fstop around about 8 will give you the sharpest photos with a wider DoF, so a slower speed that allows a higher narrower aperture will get really sharp images.

This is a rule of thumb, some lenses will get photos just as sharp wide open as at higher Fstop, but most lenses this isn't the case.
>>
>>2771508

No prob. Also, it's worth noting that lenses with a larger front objective (as in, faster) will typically render more detail in the shadows at the same ISO and aperture as a slower lens, since they do gather more photons. It's all about them light units bb.

What kind of lens should I be looking for to shoot landscape photography? Is the field of view angle for wide-angle universally the same?
>>
>>2772361
>Is the field of view angle for wide-angle universally the same?
What?
It depends on your style. Some people shoot landscape with a very wide angle lens, but in that case, you have to be willing to put a lot of effort in to get a scene that looks good in its entirety so that your foreground or frame edges don't ruin the composition or mood you're going for.

Others use medium lenses to help with that, but to still get a sense of the enormity of the scene (usually shooting from pretty far away)

Still others choose to use telephoto lenses to pick out specific features of the landscape that they like.

>>2772361

Come to the bitter but freeing realization that nobody on the planet actually gives a fuck about you. To them, you aren't the main character. You aren't even in the supporting cast. You're not even an extra. You're in the audience of the movie that is THEIR life. You could literally die and shit yourself 10 feet away from them, and they'd tell their Facebook friends about it, mention it to their boyfriend at dinner, and then never think about you again. You've seen hundreds of people with cameras in your life. How many of them do you care about, remember, or have any emotional reaction to? I'll bet it's less than 2.

Nobody cares about you, you aren't important, do what you want.

Just focus on getting the shot and actively look for good pictures. Honestly chimping in public gives a great impression that you are "pro" to the average slob and shows that you aren't taking pictures to furiously masturbate to later. Most people won't even notice when/what you are taking a picture of and will freeze up like a deer in headlights. If they don't, some people might try to "photobomb" or pull a funny face, often making a pic better/more natural and even fewer people will get angry. Literally on average 1-2 people a year will be upset and confront you for "taking a pic without their permission", in which case you can fake deleting it, apologize, and walk away. If you are actually afraid of someone beating you up, then carry pepper spray or a gun you pussy.

Just to be clear to the guy who asked it, radioactive lens coating was a thing but it doesn't have anything to do with the lens coming from Russia or Ukraine or whatever. If you're afraid about your lens being contaminated with radioactive fuel you should hope it is, there are people who collect that shit, you may be able to sell the fragment lol. But I don't think you realise how unlikely it is, it would be more probable to find bacon fragments from a lens bought from USA.

I'm mostly interested in getting a camera for experimenting with different focal lengths and analyzing the perspective warping, along with working on shot composition (working toward being a layout guy in animation).

Would I do just fine with some shitty $150 camera with a built in zoom lens? If it's possible for me to get wide angle and a small telephoto shot in the same package I think I'd be fine, even though the image quality might be questionable. Outside of studying I'd be taking photos casually, and if I get really into it I'd rather go for an expensive DSLR or something.

Currently considering the Nikon Coolpix L340.

Spot metering. I think the problem pops up the most when shooting with the strong light from the sun behind the subject. Situations other than that and everything seems fine.

Yeah that's normal. It's just an effect of the sunlight on the other elements of the photo, I get it too.

I have a problem. I very rarely like photos. 90% of everything I see, I consider to be shit. About 5% are mostly "alright", and only the remaining 5 are what I would say "good". Not everything you take is meant to be gold it's something that requires patience and thought. Slow down, take less images, spend more time framing/composing/thinking about your shot before you take it. It's quality over quantity. On average, how many shots are you taking per shoot?

Basically, longer the focal length of the lens, harder it is to shrink it down without compromising on the aperture size. For APSC compact cameras, you're already looking at f/2.8 max and it's only at 28mm. Something has to give one way or another.

You're best off either just cropping after the shoot (or in-camera if it lets you), or going for a mirrorless.

dynamic lighting ... dynamic ... do you even know what daynamic means.

to clear this: sunlight is very dynamic. what you do in a studio is to compress (reduce) dynamic by lighting. so that the remaining dynamic fits in your little pee-wee camicon.

so. moron. if you have no lighting but want supidupi compressed dynamics you only can use reflectors, do shitty hdr or buy a camera with a higher dynamic range.

or you could work with high dynamics like profesinel cock-suckers do. as if you couldn't shoot a good picture by choosing a specific dynamic range, instead of having a stupid gimme-all-possible attitude. life's not like that. nothing is like that. intelligence is filtering, art is omitting.

also go and shove things high dynamicially in your poorly lighted rectum.

>Time lapse photography between day and night

I've tried a couple time lapse photos and usually just leave it in manual but how would I handle the transition from day to night levels of light?

If you leave it in anything other than manual it looks all choppy because the camera is changing the setting every photo, I've heard.

With raw you get more control over the exposure in post, right? can I leave it slightly under exposed in the daylight then when night comes just adjust the exposure? Is there any way to do this automatically for every photo over time?

I'm really tired right now so this is probably a pants on head retarded question.

If I get a converter to use crop E lenses on an A7, would the lens be the focal length if it was being used on a crop sensor or a full frame.
Like, if I put a Sony 50mm f/1.8 meant for crop sensor with an E-to-FE converter, will the equivalent focal length stay at 50mm or jump to 75mm? I understand you can just put E lenses and have the camera crop the sensor, but that's counter intuitive to the whole point of having an A7.

Do E to FE converters even exist?

You HAVE to crop. The lens is designed for crop sensors, so only the center of the full frame sensor will be lit.

IIRC there are no converters, you can just mount your E lenses into your A7.

What is the quality on lens converters? I have a sweet rack of Minolta lenses that i want to use on my dslr Nikon
>>
>>2778679

>>
>>2778679
Quality on mechanical only converters is excellent. Quality on converters with lenses is typically terrible.

Look up the flange distance of your lens' mount (Minolta is 44.5mm, for the most recent mount). Then look up your body's mount (Nikon is 46.5mm).

If the body's flange distance is longer than the lens' you have to have a converter with a lens in it.

If the lens's flange distance is longer than the camera's than you can use a mechanical only converter.

I am new to photography. I have been watching videos and reading up on guides for beginners. One of the most common recommendations I am seeing is to ditch the kit lens and get a prime lens. What makes a lens a prime lens? What makes a lens a kit lens, just the fact that it comes with the camera? Or are certain lenses (such as 18-55mm) just known as kit lenses? Thanks for any answers you may be able to provide.
>>
>>2779053

A kit lens is a lens that comes in a kit (paired) with a camera body upon purchase, usually in the same box or are just lower quality in general (some come in a seperatr box but still suck)

A prime lens is a lens that does not zoom, prime lenses produce a nicer image (especially when compared to entry level zooms) some people also say that they help you learn composition as you cant just zoom in and out willy nilly but this is nonsense. Even the cheapest primes less than $100 can be as sharp as the very best zooms (several thousand dollars) which id another good reason to get one.. Kit zooms just are not very good in general, they are made to cover a big zoom range which is fine for enthusiasts and soccer mums but primes are higher quality (even cheap ones).

extremely stupid question, but raised around dslrs

but when you look through the viewfinder of a film camera, is it an accurate representation of the settings you dialed in? or is it just balanced and theres no review of your settings?

i see film having such wonderful tones, and was thinking of picking up a fuji klasse - but was turned off because you couldnt review and the viewfinder didnt reflect the settings. then i saw the hasselblad viewfinder and well... you could see what you dialed in - i never thought that was true until now
>>
>>2778595
Because it's the one you take the most care with, the rest are "just in case"-photos.
This is the main reason shooting film gives you more keepers per shot taken.
>>
>>2779792
If you know how DSLRs work then you know how SLRs work. If you don't know how DSLRs work you should learn/ask about that.
>>
>>2767522
>focal
Where it focuses.
>length
The distance it takes to focus.

It's exactly what it sounds like. A 50mm lens takes 50mm to focus from the sensor. Some lenses use trickery to move this distance so the "mm" on the lens is not the distance it take to focus. They still focus as what is written on the lens.
>>

and the viewfinder looked pretty accurate, but i assumed because of the settings you dial in

If there is etching (fungus damaged the lens) the only option it to replace or polish the element (i.e. very expensive). If the fungus has not damaged the lens then it should be fine after it's cleaned. Depending on the damage the lens could still take fine pictures.
