Good afternoon, /p/

I've got some recent stuff for you guys, most of these will be from a week long trip to Death Valley I took in late December. It was my first time there but I could see myself going a lot more often. It's seriously like a paradise, with every kind of desert landscape you could imagine and more. And it's mostly empty in December. I spent every sunrise and sunset without another human in sight, and got to spend most nights in peaceful, silent solitude camping in the van. It's completely awesome. This was a salt and mud flow that was drying up from the floods in October.

All of these are home developed, this is Provia.

To any of you who picked up my plains photography ebook, check your inbox. I just finished a total overhaul and expansion of it and you get an upgrade. The new one is far more packed with info and photos (at least three times as much text), so I promise it's waaaay better.

Dunes with no footprints were a treat. Until I turned around wanted to shoot in the other direction and can see that I totally decimated miles of dunes with my own feet. Classic dune photography feels, good thing the sunset was also good in this direction.

90% sure this one is Velvia 50

The sailing stones, in a place where rocks move on their own. It's a brutal tire-popping and very slow drive down a long bumpy road to get here, which luckily keeps this place from getting a million visitors. I only saw a couple tourists in rental Jeeps photographing with ipads (my favorite) that all disappeared a couple hours before sunset. One of them asked me if I was taking video of the rocks moving. If there was one place I was worried about running into herds of photographers it was here but I lucked out.

This was Velvia 50, definitely pushing the limits of dynamic range but it worked. I might develop the Ektar shots later this week.

The park is totally awesome about backcountry camping. You can't do it near the main paved roads or day-use dirt roads, but most of the backcountry parts of the park have little pull-offs where you can park a van to spend the night. Best of all it's free camping too. Of course don't be a dick and drive on the salt flats. Gotta park and walk out for a ways to find photos.

Pic related, a just for fun shot of the van under the stars.

Most of the park has no cell service whatsoever. Just the visitor center and I found one mile along the road on the north end of the park that had 4g. You need to be fairly self sufficient, have a tool kit and tons of water and food in case something happens. If you're near a dirt road, chances are someone will drive by every few hours, maybe only once a day in the remote areas but as long as you've got some supplies you'll be ok. Also have a full size spare tire and a compressor and extra tire plugs.

The racetrack was soooo awesome. I was just a little discouraged when I got there because some rocks were clearly moved or missing, and a few dicks even carved on them. But as I explored more most were in good shape and I had a great night there. Later on I looked up that it was possibly geologists that carved on them trying to figure out when they move, because it was mostly a single letter or number on the rocks which is not your normal douchebag marking.

Racetrack on Provia. I burned through every sheet of film I had loaded during that sunset, I was pretty stoked.

Yea I certainly wouldn't do anything that's disruptive but yea nah mate that sounds good. How about the locals (if any) nearby? Were they hillbillies like the ones in the movies? Not too worried about the cell connection, I may just take a friend with me. Did you use any artificial lighting?

Your trip seems amazing from the photos :)

Didn't really notice many locals, there's not a lot of people living in the area. The Nevada/California state line is like EMPTY for the most part. I did have some smelly French-accent hippie degenerate (also playing didgeridoo music on bluetooth speakers) approach me and tell me not to park my car near his campsite because he and his girl wanted privacy. It was midday and I had just parked there to check my map and read a public info sign (it was a small parking area just for the sake of that sign). I didn't camp there but had a good laugh when I looked later on in the evening and saw his campsite got crowded by other people "intruding" on his personal space.

>>2756699
No artificial lighting or reflectors for any of these. I do use GND filters to control the sky exposure but the crazy thing about these desert scenes is that they really glow. The mud-cracked playa really reflects a lot of light and picks up all the sunset colors. It makes exposures rather easy as contrast isn't too insane.

Provia for this one.

That was 35mm on 645, so about like 20mm. I really did a lot of wides for this trip, the movements were pretty extreme for the 4x5 shots at the sailing rocks.

What is your 645 system, based alex?
I was initially against it, because it didn't seem to make much sense to shoot such a small frame on MF film, but I actually shoot a lot of portait shots anyway, and having it native, and in the ratio I amost always crop verticals to anyway is really quite nice.
And given that portrait shots get resized much harder than landscapes on most screens, you still get that MF look.
>>
>>2757105
It's a Mamiya 645 pro, they are rather dirt cheap these days. I'm happy with it for those times when I need something faster.

>>
>>2757265
Thanks, man. I'm glad to hear that. I still enjoy posting here for some reason so I'll keep it up.

I can post a crop of that one when I get home. I'd say the scans never look insanely sharp at 100% because I think 2400dpi is the limit of film scans on a flatbed, but it's pretty much like I used a 35mm camera with a 90mm lens and did a 13 image stitch if they gives you any idea.
>>
Thank you for another thread, Based Alex.

Its only downside is that now I want to be in a sunny meadow with my m645 & 50mm sekor-shift, waiting for the light to change, a warm breeze in the air but very few insects. Sadly it's the asscrack of winter, and dirty slush is neither comfortable nor visually appealing.

Hey Alex you're shooting LF right? I've asked this in the gear thread, but I doubt that there's any people who shoot LF there so I figured I might as well ask you personally while you're here again :3

I saw a Linhof for sale on ebay for roughly 200$ (without a lens though), but I have no real experience with LF. Could you tell me a bit about your work process? Is it expensive (film, development cost etc.). And does it even make sense if I don't have access to amazing landscapes like in your pictures (I mostly shoot architecture, but would like to get into landscapes sometimes). Also no car so I guess that's another possible problem.

Thanks for the pictures and the thread btw, always a great source of entertainment/inspiration

No human portraits, landscapes are definitely my gig.

>>2758182
That's probably a good deal for a Linhof. There's so many different Linhofs out there though, with some ranging to super epic with full movements to just being super simple like a Crown Graphic (also usually about $200-300). In that price range I would guess it's a very simple 4x5 without many movements. That said, the first two years I shot 4x5 I did it with a Crown Graphic and had a blast. I modified the front lens element so it could swing and tilt and it got me by for a while until I learned that I wanted more movements and a more rugged camera. It will probably still have front rise which is great for architecture if that's where you want to start. Get some b&w film for $1 a sheet and with about $50 in trays and chemicals you could be developing your own film for pennies a sheet.

You most certainly could give it a try if you'd like. And you don't necessarily need a car. I took this photo on a bike ride last spring, starting from my front door and riding about 45 miles from home. I spent the night there and rode home the next day. Cars are optional.

>>2758187

thanks for the reply! Here's a picture of the cam (sold without the lens). Probably gonna go for it and buy the lens and other things like a light meter at another time though

What do you do about color picture development though?

Ah, for some reason the thought of it being a monorail camera never crossed my mind. Those cameras are rather damn bulky compared to field cameras, but it will have all the lens movements you could ever need for architecture.

I develop all my own color stuff. I've been doing C41 for years now in an inversion tank (HP Combi Plan tank, which is no longer available new but sold on ebay) and I just started doing my own e6 slide film a couple months ago. I was lucky though and some old guy gave me a complete Jobo automated processor because he didn't want it any more. You could start with doing your own black and white, then send color images to a lab for a while until you decide you may want to invest the time and money into processing equipment.
>>
>>2758394
I develop 4x5 in a regular 2 roll paterson tank by just curling it up and sliding it in along the edge. It fucks up about 1/4" on the top and bottom but otherwise works pretty well.

What do you do to meter a shot like this for slide film? I'd be afraid to try a shot like that on velvia and probably stick with Kektar and overexpose a little so the rocks aren't too dark.

I also don't really trust my camera's internal meter too much, even with a gnd filter on.
>>
>>2760355
I average metered for the entire foreground, ignoring the sky. I added about a half stop to make the playa bright. Then I metered the sky to chose a GND filter, and went with a 2 stop to keep from over darkening the top left of the sky. The desert has rather bright, reflective ground so the contrast wasn't as extreme as some places.
>>
>>2760360
I assume you're using a handheld meter then?
>>
>>2760373
I'm using an Olympus em5 for light metering actually. Set it to f22 and add extra stops as needed.

Astro van, man. It's kind of a piece of junk, but has a ton of ground clearance and all wheel drive. Built a bed in the back and it's kinda slowly turning into a camper. It also hauls the art show around.

You're too good for this board. I love the colors you get, especially the Provia stuff. Thank you for helping to keep film alive.
>>
>>2760575
Thanks man! I don't see American vans very often here in europe, so would be nice project to turn one into camper aswell.
>>
>>2760578
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it anon.

>>2760579
They are a rather unique van, not too big but with an actual truck chassis. And dirt cheap here in the states. I'm not sure you can buy that much scrap metal as cheap as you can buy a van.
>>
>>2760583
As a mechanic, I can say that I am not unhappy that most of the Astro/Safari's have rusted their way in to the salvage yard. Though I will admit that the Ford Aeroshit was even more of a pain in the ass to work on.

Great work as always Alex.
>>
>>2760644
Yes, I'm also a mechanic myself and I can say vans in general are retarded to work on. They serve their purpose, but damn there's no room to get to anything mechanical. Glad you liked the thread.

Really love the S curve here.

>>2756665
To be honest I think the leading line in this one is too strong. It's all I focus on, and overall I'm not digging the composition. But hey, that's just like, my opinion man.

>>2756681

>>
I just wanted to stop by and say that this is the best thread I have seen by far in the short time I've been visiting this board. You are well and truly talented and your command of composition, color, and light are inspiring. Adding to that your skill in processing and developing your own film, and I am left astounded.

These beautiful and natural shots are so refreshing compared to the new wave of overprocessing in landscape photography (which I think is often a result of many modern photographers not taking the time to meter and expose properly on location).

Simply stunning. Keep up the good work.
>>
>>2761840
Thanks for the crit, man. Always appreciated.

>>2761841
I'm really glad to hear that. There's been a big change in landscape photography recently (see the Marc Adamus thread), but I think film and natural processing still have lots of room in this world. In fact, I think it will eventually become more rare and possibly more sought after than it has been in decades.

Also, screw this post I decided to add one more image from this hike on Tuesday. It was a wonderfully calm morning snowshoe, the air was so calm all I could hear was the light sound of snowflakes landing on my jacket.

Nicely done.

What does the inside of your van look like?
>>
>>2762229
Surprisingly enough, I don't have any photos of the inside. Maybe I'll take one while I'm camping this weekend. It's got a full size bed built out of 2x4s, an RV battery and inverter, and the passenger front seat swivels to face the rear.
>>
>>2761775

This photo, assuming there is a dirt trail where the snow trail currently is, when everything is green during summer would be amazing
>>
Weird question, does it ever become totally dark at night in some places you camp? I was thinking it could be a fun little side project to take some shots during the day and develop them out in the open during the night, in the world's largest darkroom.

It'd obviously have to be a cloudy night and in a location with minimal dust (maybe a tent?)
>>
>>2764889

Not Alex, but it never gets completely dark anywhere in the world.

The trail goes near there in the summer, but there are so many wonderful trails up there. 400 miles just in that national park.

>>2764889
The stars are surprisingly bright, but I bet if you were inside a tent on a night with no moon and using slow speed film you'd be ok. Would need a shit ton of running water though.

Just got back from a quick trip to Utah, explored a slot canyon that required a 9 mile hike and a thigh deep wade through a partially frozen river with mud and slush chunks flowing in it. The day wasn't long enough to explore as much as I wanted to so I'll head back in the spring hopefully. Looking at tracks in the dirt, I don't think anyone had been there for a few months.

>The stars are surprisingly bright,
tfw you try to take a hipster-as-fuck night long exposure of your camp, only to wake up at 4am with the moonlight reflecting off the snow and it's basically daylight at night.....

shot might have gotten ruined, but those 4am wakeups are the best when you're the only person around for miles
>>
>>2765222
I bet your exposure will be just fine, especially since the moon would only be partial if it rises that late in the night. I usually do f8 all night for iso 100 film and don't mind if the moon comes up for a couple hours during the exposure, so long as it's not directly in the lens.

But shit yes those 4am wake-ups are the best. I love how quiet it can be out there.
