Hey gang!

I've been taking heaps of photos in an attempt to learn the art of street photography. These are the best shots I've taken this month and I would really appreciate some feedback (especially some constructive criticism)

Thanks for taking the time to look at my shots :)

Ok now this is the best IMO, would print

This is coming from someone who would not say they shoot street or any particular subjects so i might not know all your reasonings and tidbits

some of these are legitimately fantastic, some are mediocre at best. My constructive criticism is to be a little more picky with what you keep.
>>
>>2755640
After reading your comment about waiting for a guy in a suit I had a slap of the forehead moment. Can't believe I didn't think of that at the time. Thanks for the criticism :)
>>
>>2755643
What photos do you think I should drop?

I was originally going to chose 5 photos, but I couldn't bring myself to cut some of them. I really have to start killing my babies
>>

>>2755576
These are the only two with any merit.
One had a subject, the other has composition.
The rest are irredeemable garbage.
Total basic bitch babby's first street photos pussy garbage.
>>
>>2755687
Thanks for the feedback! Any advice on how I can improve my shots?
>>
Hey, what happens if somebody challenge you after you've taken a shot, accusing you of taking their photo and causing shit?
Does that even happen?
I always wondered that about street photography.
I reckon most wouldn't give a shit but there's always gonna be one dickhead, especially if there's kids in the shot.
>>
>>2755564
Great shot! Would have gone down more to get on her level, but it's very good like this too.

>>2755565
I agree the girl in the lower left is distracting, would crop or frame her out. I feel like this would work better in black and white and/or with more contrast.

>>2755576
I think I can see what you're going for here, but it just doesn't work for me, sorry. Too much empty space - or if that's the point, then the stuff on the right is too much. I like the guy sitting down but the photo doesn't do him justice IMO.

Just my 2c. I'm not too keen on the other ones, not saying they're bad or anything but they just don't evoke anything for me.
>>
>>2755697
Man, it can be rough. I've actually been hit a couple times but it was more of a warning whack rather than a punch to the face.

Most times I try not to linger after I've taken a photo. Get the shot, then get out. Sometimes the situation doesn't allow you to leave. In those cases all you can do is wear a smile and try to be polite. You'll find that most people don't mind having their picture taken, but you will come across the few that will absolutely hate it.

The best advice I can give you is to not let a bad experience deter you from taking photos. Take it in stride and never stop shooting.
>>
>>2755698
I think I agree with you on cropping the lady out. I like the frame the way it is, but she is just too distracting. The only thing from preventing me from cropping her right now is that fact that street photos are 'allowed' to have blemishes. You can be forgiven for slightly off framing, or a soft focus, permitting that the photo is interesting. I'm hoping that this is one of those cases.
>>
You stripped out the EXIF so it's kind of hard to give you complete feedback with regards to exposure.
The shots with the kids reach creeper level and the out of focus shots are utter trash.
>>2755573
This would be nice if the exposure wasn't fucked.
>>2755571
I like this because it gives off the right kind of creeper vibe.
>>2755567
The verticals are off in this and the never nude guy being cropped out too.
>>2755566
Only the chair behind the kid is in focus, If you're shooting in Aperture Priority or /p/ro mode then learn to shoot manual so you can stop down to keep everyone in focus. There's clearly enough light available for it.
>>2755565
Framing is off, cut off the girl, crop or shoot vertical.
>>2755568
Out of focus/too slow a shutter speed. non-interesting subject. Trash.
>>2755570
Missed focus, Taken from straight on so it appears more boring, Taking a step forward and to the right could have helped with this.
>>2755574
This is nice, I'd have liked to seen it from a little higher but sometimes you gotta live with limitations. It also seems a little blown out.
>>2755576
This is your best of the bunch It suffers from the guy in the back being out of focus. Learn to stop down.

Don't strip your EXIF before posting if your exposures are fucked.

This better?

I read somewhere that it's okay to blow out your exposure when it comes silhouette shots. I'm still very new to post processing so I'm not quite sure what I want to be going for.

It's a lot better than it was. Try bringing the shadows up a bit when processing your raw if you need to. At least now you can see some detail in the background.
You have an X-T1, so feel free to bump up that ISO a bit more to raise your shutter speed or allow you to stop down on the other shots. You'll get there.

>I read somewhere that it's okay to blow out your exposure when it comes silhouette shots.
It kind of is and kind of isn't. You want to still try exposing for the shadows and fix the highlights in post on digital. In my experience that statement is a bit more true when shooting film.
>>
>>2755728
Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it

>>2755728
Actually, what would you recommend as a good walking around ISO?
>>

>okay to blow out your exposure when it comes silhouette shots.
yeah but you didnt go full blown silhoute and you had too much foreground to get away with just a silhouete
>>
>>2755735
Really on my X-T10 I'm at 1600-3200 all the time, I don't feel like it's too noisy at all.

Are these all with the pancake? I like the quality.
>>
These are great. I'm at a similar level and there is no substitute to just getting out there as much as you can.
Your first 10,000 pictures are your worst!

Nice work on the whole, could use some more interesting PP. I feel like some of them have just enough motion blur to be distracting but not enough to be interesting and purposeful

I played around a bit more with the exposure of this shot, I feel it balances the photo a little better.

Also, how do you know when to stop fiddling with a photo? I feel I should just walk away, but I can't help but go back in and make small adjustments

This is just great

>>2755565

I also like these two a lot, the first for the cute kids and the second has some really interesting framing. I think your post processing is pretty mediocre across the board though other than the OP photo, you should spend more time on it. Your black and white pics are processed a lot better than the color ones.
>>
>>2756145
I love working with colour, so any tips on how I could PP my images to pack more of a punch would be greatly appreciated!
>>
Okay, these aren't all goodbut I'm really impressed with the general quality.
>>
>>2756151

The color pic in your OP post has a really nice saturated and dreamy tone to it. You've got an issue with getting a good exposure and focus in all of your pics, which is pretty common with street pics that I've seen here. Most of them are all very flat without any contrast. I'd spend some time finding some presets to just get a feel for what you like and don't like. Also experiment with blending modes and use luminosity masks in photoshop to have a fine control over the final image. I also use selective color a lot in Photoshop. If you get tired of Lightroom Google's Nik Collection is pretty nice for getting a consistent look. I especially like their black and white editor. In general I'd just that getting your exposure right in camera and trying to replicate a look that you've seen from another photographer is the best way to start learning.

The old man and the smug kids, along with the buildings and greenery, are well composed and helps the pic tell several stories. I agree that the colours look goo, too.

What ruins this pic for me is the foot sticking out behind the old man. Without it, it would be a top tier photo.
>>
>>2756312
Yeah, I noticed it when I went to post process it. Makes me so sad :(
>>
>>2756312
What makes it worse is that half a second later the she would have been hidden behind the man.

So my question is, does this make the photo worthless, or is it still a decent photos that can be displayed?
>>
>>2756312
>foot sticking out

it can be erased with ps anytime.

i dont think that it "tells stories", its a neat photo with pretty light and a weird sense of scale. that alone makes it good. i say OP erase the fucking foot.
