"The best camera is the one you have with you."
What do you guys carry on you on a normal day?
One where you aren't specifically going out to shoot.
Do any of you guys actually carry a point and shoot with you all the time? Are there any benefits to this other than the obvious quality and control improvements?
Is it really that much of an improvement over a modern cellphone camera, such as an iPhone 6s?

I generally have my backpack with various things I need and for carrying shopping with me all the time. I keep my GR in my coat pocket and normally have whatever film camera I feel like shooting in my bag.
I only use my phone camera for snapchat, I have a wifi Sd card in the GR if I want to post a photo on social media for some reason
>>2748480
iPhone.
I'd imagine some compact camera could be nice, but having a GR and an iPhone is a little redundant in terms of focal lengths. Something like an X100T would be more useful in that regard, but then you start leave the realms of pocketability.
I definitely agree with the opinion that smartphones have largely made point-&-shoots obsolete, as the difference in quality has reduced so much. One of the only situations that I do take a digital p&s with me is when I want a camera I can pass round people - I find that if you give an 'actual camera' to somebody, they will shoot differently than if you just tell them to take some pictures with their phone. As an added benefit, even something like my tiny Nikon P340 has a better flash than pretty much any smartphone.
Nowadays I do tend to carry my Klasse S whenever I'm wearing a coat with a pocket, but for fun rather than quality-compared-to-my-smartphone.

Leica Mini 3
Got it for 15EUR at a thrift shop. The image quality is great for a point and shoot, I can shoot muh film and own muh Leica.
>>2748520
same price, but normal Leica Mini here.
I just use my phone. There are some days that I feel like taking a walk and see if I find something good to take photos of - those days I bring my film slr
I used to take an SLR or DSLR with me at all times. They're not THAT bulky.
If I was going somewhere where it was poor form to carry one I'd have the Cosina CX-1 or a Mju2 in my jacket pocket.
They're both alright but I think the Mju2 is overrated on this board. If for no other reason than the fact you have to manually turn off flash every time you switch on the camera.
Ricoh GR always on me.
XA or Mju II in my right jacket pocket every day. Also obviously a phone (iPhone 4S) that I shoot a lot with too. I often throw another film camera in my bag too if I'm taking it, but not necessarily every day. Recently it's been either a Fed 2 or a Zenit 11.
But yeah I do carry a point and shoot all the time, even if I'm just going to take the trash or buy groceries.
I'll usually always have my FED 50 or Yashica T2 in my coat pocket, or a Pentax ME Super or Yashica FX-D in my backpack if I'm carrying one.
Don't use them every time I go out, but it's nice to have and doesn't weigh much.
>>2748480
I keep a Canon SX130 in my pocket for video and my Canon 350D in my other pocket for still pictures.
>>2748533
yeah bro, dslr totally pocketable
X100T every day on my commute, fits in my work pants pockets or on a light strap
My phone doesn't even come close
I used to carry a canon S90 on my backpocket
I took some great shoots with it
now i have the samsung note 5, the image quality is great, and captures in RAW as well
the only issues is the lack of zoom, and no wide angle (it's about 28mm), and how image quality drops fasts on lower light
but again, for having it integrated on my phone it's more than enough
Really love my k-50 but I've been thinking about getting a GR so I can keep it in a pocket at all times
Should I get the GR II or the GR? Is there another camera that's as compact that's better?
I used to carry my Olympus Mju everywhere, but I just use my phone now
>>2748515
>Klasse S
Damn I always wanted one, got any pics?
Ricoh GR
Made for this very purpose. About the same size as two stacked iPhone 5s. Most importantly though it feels like a camera designed by actual photographers - i.e. no shit Sony menus/ergonomics. It's easy to use one handed and the software is straight foward and lots of customization. Snap focus (basically you can set zone focus) ability is awesome. Sensor is good and the lens is a great 28/2.8. One button press and you have macro mode (focus to 10cm).
This camera is fully deserving of the praise it gets.
>>2750445
I bought the ii but only because I wanted to buy new for the warranty. There's little difference between the two. The ii has wifi. That's about it.
>>2750445
Wait for Fuji X70. It is quite compact and offer a lot of film simulation with famous fuji's sooc jpgs.
Now always carry Olympus TG-4; water and shock protected plus RAW capture; fits in back pocket; usually forget the iPhone unless wearing sport coat.
I used to carry an s90 at all times, now I keep either an olympus pen (film) or mamiya 6 (the old folding one) in my coat pocket.
>Is it really that much of an improvement over a modern cellphone camera
yes

My phone, Lumia 640 (wish I had the 950 though), or a Nikon D3200 in the outer pocket of my Haglöfs backpack.
>>2748480
FM2n with a 50/1.4 or an AE1 with a 50/1.8. Usually keep one of these on me at all times. I always have one loaded with b&w and one loaded with colour and which one I take out depends on my mood really.
>>2751360
I don't Flickr/tumblr/ig, I just put things on a personal blog (cjdavies.org) every now & then.
>>2748480
X-T1 and the 18mm.
Also, Cara a shit.

I carry an XA or an LX3 depending on how I'm feeling.

I just use my LG G4 for casual snaps. It's not punching up there with an X100 I'm sure but it's pretty nice. At one time I thought I'd use a fancy P&S but I couldn't justify the several hundred (possibly over $1000 USD) on a camera like that, it's money better spent on a lens for my main camera, or for traveling or saving etc.
I used to carry around a film SLR, but it started acting up on me so I stopped hauling the extra weight. The camera I use now does everything I could ever want, and while I did enjoy B&W film shooting I can't be bothered with it anymore, sadly.
Sony Z3c. Alternatively if I'm not carrying a lot I'll have an Olympus Trip 35 or OM2n in my bag, really depends on where I'm going though

Ive been looking into the Kiev is there a collapsible 50 that was made for it
>>2754565
there is a collaspable 39mm mount 50mm lens that is russian made goes for a good few sheckles though
Starting to carry my FM2n with a 28mm 2.8 around, but usually just leave with my Olympus Infinity with some expired coloured film.
GR II / GRD IV, iPhone 6+ and sometimes my Lolympus Mju 1.
GRD1, Ricoh R1 and Sony E. Z1 usually.
Nikon F5, D600, FM2, or Fuji Xpro 1, usually with my 35-70/2.8 on whichever I picked.
All these baby cameras are too confining for me to enjoy using, so I just suck it up and carry the heavy, bulky cameras. You get used to it. I feel really strange if I run out on a 5 minute errand and I don't bring one, like I forgot my shirt or something.
>>2748480
Mamiya RZ67 Pro II
Because big boxy cameras get all the bitches... and I get a full day workout while i'm at it.
>>2754881
Why own both the GRD IV and GR II? Surely they're extremely similar in ergonomics but with the GR being far better quality?
>>2754956
I bought the GRD IV way before I decided to get the GR II. Plus, it's already so fucked up that I couldn't sell it anymore (typical GRD IV stuff like failing ADJ knob etc). But then it makes a lot of fun shooting with it every now and then because dem CCD colors.
>>2748515
This is true, I guess the silver lining is that its opened a market for high-end point and shoots such as the Ricoh GR, X100T or RX100.
>>2748480
On a normal day I go out with my wallet and my phone in my pocket, sometimes with my laptop.
Because I'm not a twat who goes everywhere with a fucking camera annoying the hell out of everyone. If I'm going out shooting I am planning for it, deciding what I want to shoot, arrange the gear for it and decide the time and place(s). Like a normal person.
No, I don't carry a camera with me every day.
>>2755017
Figured something like that. I intend on owning my GR until it falls to pieces as well
I've got a broken Ricoh R1, it's a fully auto film point and shoot made before the GRs. The lens doesn't retract properly, and is kind of screwy. I get a few good shots out of it mostly by accident, but I'm hoping to get a Oly Mju 1 or something, for cheap thrashing about. I try to take my Canon A1/50mm with me but I really don't like the weight and noise of it.
>>2755160
How's the metering on the Mju 1s? Can it cope with the flash turned off? And low light focus? There's quite a bit about the Mju 2s out there but the 1s seem a little less used. They seem to go for between £10 and about £25 here, so like $14 to $35 USD.
>>2748480
I leave one in my car, if that counts. Also have my cell phone, which is nice but all the ones I've owned go to absolute shit in anything that isn't good lighting.
>>2755164
>How's the metering on the Mju 1s?
center-weighted from the pictures I've took
>Can it cope with the flash turned off?
At night? Nope nope nope, even the mju 2 barely manages it
>And low light focus?
Not as good as mju2
I just leave a contax t2 in the car or in my pocket most of the time.
hasselblad 500 c/n is usually in the back seat
thats usual it if i'm out and about and don't have any particular plans that would involve photography
>>2750441
You must wear some pretty godawful pants
>>2754486
Z3c represent
I have an Olympus XA2 that I haven't shot yet
Have a t2i that I am about to sell because... wel, I haven't shot much lately and, it doesn't exactly feel organic shooting out of such a brick.
I'm interested in Ricoh GR, but probably will just end up buying a better phone with a decent camera and saying fuck it.
Regardless, we are all going to be shooting out of smartphones by the time we are old fags.
>>2755032
>my way is the only good way
You are the reason this board sucks. I even agree with some of what you do but the way you said it is so fucking pompous. Just fuck off to somewhere else.
>>2755164
>>2755401
I have some lolympus experience that may or may not be useful.
Mine is an Infinity Mini.
I have no idea if it has a mju equivalent in other markets, or if it's just its own thing.
Pic related, work it out for yourself.
It's good though. Very sharp, focuses perfectly in the dark, can make exposures at least a few seconds long with the flash off.
Really the only things I wish it had are aperture control and a "force infinity focus" mode.

Sort of? The Jupiter is a fickle Bitch, the j8 for the m39 was mostly collapsable up untill the early 80's where it went solid body, where as the j8 for the contax (kiev) mount was all solid body except for models and number started with a 52. They're really hard to find, as they only made a few thousand, and weren't well manufactured, they were however the best optically as most lenses made pre 59xxxxxx on their serial number were made with real Zeiss lenses and parts on real Zeiss machines, either by drunk Russian fucks or were recycled from junk bins that were reposessed after the war.
>>2755415
In response to this, if portability is what you want, get a kiev IIIA, the one without the light meter on it. These suckers are cellium cells and they run dry over the years, and require tedious and constant maintenance to keep dependable. And if you're really set on getting a collapsable lens on it, which are fun as fuck and want to look like a real bad ass at your photo club meeting, just get a Fed 2b (the a is a wind knob and the b is the lever) which looks kinda like a fucked up breed of a Leica iii and an m3, as the Jupiter 8 lens in those were mostly collapsable up unroll about 1976 were it was a 50/50 chance. I wouldn't buy anything past 67 though, the quality dropped from alright to just plain sheit afteer that

Jesus Christ, I hate this mentality. The whole "the best camera is the one you have with you" implies that good photos are a matter of being at the right place at the right time, and if only had you had your camera with you, you would of been having awesome photos. Seems like a shitty excuse for being too lazy to carry a decent camera with you, or actually having some production skill and being able to plan and create awesome photos. This is is how an amateur thinks. If your working commercially this would never fly. I am sure the guys doing the food photos for big restaurants are not just using what ever they happened to be carrying with them. You don't stumble into good photos, you fucking make good photos. I mean, imagine if you applied this to other fields. Take for example, bitcoin mining, you could say "the best bitcoin mining processing solution is the one you have with you" So, you start mining bitcoin with your iphone 4, while everyone else is using dedicated GPUs with built in hardware acceleration for bitcoin mining. After about 1000 years you might get some bitcoin thinking this way.
