The vignette is way over the top and distracting. The raised black are too dramatic, and aren't doing much to support this particular scene. The colors are too cool for my personal taste, and the processing mixed with the low level of exposure is giving it a grungy messy feeling. The composition is okay, but I'd like to see what it looks like without the vignette, since it's heavy enough to alter the eye-path through the image. A little less sky and a little more foreground would have been nice at this particular moment, since the swirling wave is all the way against the bottom of the frame, but that's tough to judge in the moment as it's developing.
If it were mine, I'd brighten it up, warm it up, and take a much lighter hand to the edgy processing.
I'm not a huge fan of this, bu i'd like some critiques as it's one of the only non-terrible shots i took yesterday.

I appreciate the feedback. I kind of was going for that grungy kind of look to be honest. But i appreciate it none the less. The .NEF of this is pretty blown out so, I couldn't do much with this particular one. I didnt have a ND filter that day, but wanted to get a bit of water movement, so at 1second it was over exposed. I gave it another quick edit......i'm not really happy with this either but oh well, bad file.

Whats the difference between this and a good photo composition wise? This was on a phone and seems ok to me as a total noob. I can't find a justification for a DSLR for what i want to do when i already have a digital camera.

The picture is great from a technical standpoint.
The quality reminds me of a snapshot from a webcam in the dark, that way you created a familiar scene for the viewer, making it easier for him to understand your complex emotional struggle.
The green in green tones further empathize the feeling of a teenage boy growing up in a middle class family. Everything blends in together, nothing stands out or is remotely interesting. This is even enhanced by the boring lightning you chose. Great stuff. Lesser photographers would have gone for a contrast in colors or a lightning setup that didn’t emulate a computer screen.
The grain you added brings the webcam/computer screen feeling across very well and adds to the grittiness of the work. Superb!
So you got the technical part covered. Awesome! But you did far more than that, you chose a work on a very personal subject: depression.
Look at this board, you'll find snapshots from amateurs taking pictures of pretty things. None of these pictures have a meaning, they don't convey anything, forgettable stuff to keep us busy. And that's ok as well, because most of the people on here are amateurs, no matter how many YouTube tutorials they've watched.
You are above that. By only looking at your picture we can tell that the person in the frame is depressed and lonely, he is most likely bullied in school and online. There he sits in his childs room. His parents are disappointed, he barely has any friends in real life, a typical underachiever in school. He only got is online friends, he tries to cope with his anxiety by being loud and outspoken when online, he always calls the strategies in online games and his team listens. But that one post that made fun of him on Facebook once again was too much, he killed himself right there in his room.
A tragic story all in one picture.

Your portrait of the angsty teenager is very well done. Most anxious guys in your age have a haircut like that, messy, too long hair to hide behind, it covers the face, it covers your fear.
Together with the hoody your representation of vulnerable teenage years are spot on, giving the person in the picture a turtle like shell to be secure in.
But it's the details like the I-don't-really-skate-but-I-want-poeple-to-think-I-do shirt make this picture truly unique. Not only does it add to the teenage symbolism, but the juxtaposition of motivational sayings on the shirt like "backward never" make the picture truly remarkable.
The highlight if certainly the gas mask though.
You are fed up with the world and want to escape it, everyday life feels toxic and nobody understands you. Using a war tool in combination with a military-esque jacket only further emphasizes that you've been though more than normal people like your parents would understand. Spot on!
The gas mask brings the picture to a whole new level though, suddenly the picture is not only about you, the edgy but deeply emotional teenage boy, but serves as a tool to anonymize the portrait. Every kid with the same problems as you have can identify himself with that picture, great work, I can already see this trending.
Another great thing I noticed is the conflict between the rope and the mask. Wearing an object that was designed to help you breathe, while being unable to breath is outstanding and a work of a genius.
I wish I was as talented as you are, I was mean because I was envious, I tried to talk trash about your picture because I wasn’t able to truly grasp your work and it’s brilliancy.

Too much noise (high ISO). The girl doesn't look natural, looks like she is posing for a photo (which she is, but it shouldn't look like that). Lighting is bland. Not a terrible attempt though.

Nice lightning choice. The soft light of the window looks good.
I also like the strong (mostly vertical) lines and the minimal feel you have going. Good job.
I don't dig your color choices though. The blue tint is ok for the room, if you go for a cold, sterile feeling, but blue always looks bad on skin.
If you shoot a portrait the skin tone should be your first priority. A bonus with a healthy looking skin and a blue room is that the colors work really well together.
I tried to show you what I mean with pic related by realized that my edit looks horrible, so disregard that.
Other things I changed:

If you cut of part of your subject, don't do it like you did and only cut off a little bit, this looks sloppy and I'm sure you didn't do it intentional when shooting.

You have a very minimal picture, get rid of the stuff that doesn't add value to it.

It's too bright. A viewers eye is always drawn to the brightest spot in your picture. It's not so much of an issue here because there is also a face to be drawn to, but keep it in mind the next time.
The quality of your picture is very bad. I assume that you saved it to be under the 1MB rule. Just resize it to around 1000px on the long side and keep your jpeg quality at 8/12 for posts here, that will look a lot better as you can see on the two great shots below yours.

I think this is the weakest one, I think it would look neat if you cut out that one and made small prints of the other three hung up on the wall diagonally like pic related. If you do decide to keep it then maybe noise reduce it slightly, the noise looks fine by itself but it's noticeably noisier than the others.

Looks like you didn't have a tripod with you at that very moment, anon.
I really like what I am seeing and I can guess what you are trying to achieve in this shot. If you happen to have a tripod, go back to that place and shoot the scene again at ISO 100 and a nice aperture - on that tripod. Try to make multiple exposures so you'll be able to keep both the highlights in the sky and details in the shadows (the rocks are a bit too dark). Also, try to get into the rule of thirds/ do not center the horizon the next time. It'll be worth it!
