Hey /p/
Looking to enter the field of skate photography.

I've been shooting with SLRs and rangefinders for about 6 years without really taking much interest in digital cameras. It's finally time to look into it I think. Just wondering what you guys though would be the most appropriate DSLR body for shooting skateboarding/sports/action photography.

Bump. Fellow skateboarder here, I'm also interested on this.
>>
a friend of mine does this. D3, 50mm, fish, and some zoom lens. Also you need know how to use flash and synchronize them properly. He claims hss flash is necessary.
Most skatephotos look the same to me.
>>
Definitely put in some downhill skating shots as well. Go to tournaments and competitions if you can. And don't be afraid to bring in a bit of snow in those shots.

Any mid-level dslr should suit you fine for this. Shop around based on how big a buffer you want for continuous shutter use and how fast you want the max shutter speed to be. How much you care about low light performance. How much you wanna spend.

The thing I don't like about the majority of skate photo is the heavy use of ultra wide and fisheye lenses. Would love to see more stuff taken at, say, 24mm-50mm range.
>>
>>2744492
>>2744500
Babby's first skatepark shots. First dude needs to tone it down on the lighting too, shit looks so bad. Never ever uplight. Spend some money on a damn stand, and WB according to your flash.

Don't just go down and expect photos. CREATE one. Face in the frame, straight into the trash if not. Simplify. Tell all of the scrubs to get the fuck out of the frame. Learn the sport. First dude in particular has so many bad poses. Look at pro stuff and note at what moment they catch their athletes. Context. Don't rely on fisheye. No flash spill on the floor.
>>
>>2744576
>p
Thanks very much, best advice so far. I've mainly used 50mm and 24mm lenses throughout my few years of shooting so I'll probably stick to them and only employ fisheye when it's really necessary.
>>
24-105 or 24-120 (depending on Canon/Nikon allegiance) is probably the best lens I've found for local skate shots. Just enough wide and tele to get a lot of variety. Stabilization for ride-along shooting. Fixed aperture through the zoom for consistency.

Use high speed fill flash, or rear curtain flash, and only use flash if the skater tells you he can deal with it on the spot/trick you're capturing. If you set off some flashes they can easily get distracted, bail, and fuck themselves up.
>>
>>2744123
>>2744358
mid or entry level dslr is fine. for skating, it's not really about the camera you have, but rather the flashes and the composition. Don't listen to >>2744409 because downhill is gay as fuck.

>>2744492
Hit the streets with your friends! keep shooting at the park as well, its great to practice. Show the viewer where the skater came from and show the roll away. Your framing is way too tight sometimes.
>>2744500
Get an external flash and be amazed with how much better your photos look.
>>2744653
is right
>>2744674
avoid ultra wide angle. Either go fisheye or 50mm or longer. only use wide angle if necessary.
>>2747346
use flash almost always. if you're shooting with flashes a legit skater will understand that's what it takes to make the photo good. Just don't have them too close.

General info/inspiration
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6127F57BA3448E57 - extremely helpful

Good photographers. Study the photos and understand what makes them good.

Buy a skateboarding mag. Look at the really good photos and analyse them. What makes them good? How did the photog light the photo? (look for highlights/paths of light/shadows to see where flashes are coming from)
Most of all have fun and keep shooting.

It's a smear and two backs. What do you want us to say? A slightly different exposure, framing, composition, timing, or processing will do nothing to improve a photo that shouldn't have been taken in the first place.

What is your viewer supposed to take from that image?
>>
>>2749184
Two friends are on an adventure to find the best skate spot in the world. Nothing is gonna stop them from finding the spot of the gods. The one on the right has an itchy ass but that's okay because it won't stop him. The guy on the left is pretending not to notice but he knows.

Literally stop being such a /p/haggot
>>
>>2744432
lel, i have one of those pieces of shit laying on my coffee table right now.
Skate photography is all about a fast enough camera, flash, and lightroom. buy some decent flashes and slaves, and learn how to edit photos.
>>
>>2749060
This would be SO much better if you had this shot composed so that the guy in the orange shirt and the area around him fills up the frame. Basically the whole left third of the image feels extraneous.
>>
Would it be weird if I just showed up at a skatepark and started shooting people I don't know?
>>
>>2749336
yes it would, but you have to start somewhere
>>
>>2749069
point a light from below (usually a flash on the ground) up at a skater
>>
>>2749069
Lighting from below. Lighting should always (IMO) be motivated, i.e. it fits in the scene. Light almost never naturally occurs from below, so you shouldn't flash from there.

There's nothing worth critiquing, and calling it "work" would only devalue the legitimacy of someone who actually put thought into their photos.

not at all
it's a compliment when somebody wants to film/shoot you (although there are obviously assholes who find any excuse to get mad)

so just roll up to the park, try and find the best guy there (the alpha male) and say waddup, ask how its going then ask if you can practice shooting a little bit. offer to send him the photos later, because all action sports people love posting pictures to flex to their friends online

get rid of the fucking filmer!
>>
hello brisbane p
>>
i dont kow how it is where you live guys, but here in poland most of the skaters look like, behave like, and dress like a fucing gays...
i tried skate photography but since im a bit of homophobist i decided to discontinue it.
>>
>>2751044
i like that the light source is hidden
i like the light sources effect on hitting the beam and the edge of the staircase
i like that the spot. foliage, the structure hanging above, the elevator, the fact that its indoors all makes it look like a place i'd want to skate
i like that the rider makes it look like he's workign for it without tryign too hard
i dont like the filmer. having a filmer in there isn't inherently bad, but something about his clothes and proximity to the skater take away from the shot

overall really good work though
>>
>>2751044
I think including the filmer says alot more about skate photography itself than if you removed him. Good inclusion imo, beyond aesthetic reasons.

If you shoot Canon or would like to, maybe 7D Mark ii? 10 fps continuous RAW, 1080 60p movie, 20.2 MP. I don't have it because I can't afford it, but it's a really nice camera. If you have a big budget maybe a nice L lens? It's an APS-C, so you could want a 1DX. Find a good wide angle lens.

If you're serious OP you'll eventually want to get into off camera flashes. Find a digital camera that has a minimum flash sync of 1/250th. Back when I shot skate I had a Nikon D70 that had an electronic shutter and allowed me to sync up to 1/1600th of a second which was killer for underexposing the ambient light to really get the skater to pop. I don't know if there are any contemporary cameras that allow a similar cheat (the D70 is some old ass technology now) but it would be worth looking into.

Cruise skate magazines but try to get creative and out of the whole "wide and low" stereotype. Make a photo that is exciting and pleasing without the skater. Once you have the skater in the frame it will make the photo that much better.
