Is there a specific name for this style of photography or is it just generic-hipster-instagram stuff?

Ignoring the fact that it is generic-hipster-instagram crap...
The general photographic term most relevant would probably be 'environmental portrait'.

I should add that the 'environment' term isn't because of the nature/outdoors elements - it's not the definition in that sense.
Just google 'environmental portrait' and you'll see lots of examples.
Interestingly, this whole genre is taken from one single painting Caspar David Friedrich's 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’(1818).
The 'silhouetted individual looking at a larger than life landscape' concept basically went through this lineage:
Friedrich -> art photographers -> hollywood movie posters -> hipster instagram photographers

couldnt remember the name of that painting, but yeah, thats a certain reference. i think magritte has some influence in that faggy aesthetic too.

Post more. Just in general on the board.

yeah since no one would have come up with it if it wasn't for that painting...
showing off the scale of something by using a
familiar scale reference like a person isn't really a style.
the correct term is 'self-marketing'

I'm not saying that people wouldn't come up with a similar idea eventually, I'm just identifying this painting as the origin of the trend in OTL

>the environment defines the subject, which this doesnt really
