Ok, due to popular demand I'm creating a thread for photos I've taken on deployment (one year ago and haven't shared yet) as well as some other stuff so you guys can see and critique me on my "normal" stuff too. I'll start with military photos and when I run out of stuff worth posting I'll switch to others. Not gonna follow the 1000x1000 rule because Im an absolute madman.
Just to get some FAQs out of the way:
I was an Osprey crewchief in the Marines from 2010-2015 (only flew from 2012 on but anyway)
I did photography and highschool and didnt buy another camera til the X-T1 a few months after it came out because I needed to fill a void my ex-gf provided.
So I started bringing my X-T1 on flights, and just went crazy. Whenever I got to take pictures like that, we were flying in formation and my ass was sitting on the open ramp of my Osprey as I took pictures of our dash 2 while sitting or laying in the prone.
It was a unique opportunity that pretty much no one gets to do. My job in the military was pretty sick compared to 98% of MOSs and when I started bringing my camera it got even more rewarding.
All these photos were taken on deployment this time last year. We were in Kuwait but flew into Iraq to do anti-ISIS stuffs every day or two.
While I was over there I got to go to Saudi Arabia once, Jordan twice, Iraq several times, and Bahrain once.
Alright so I hope you enjoy the thread, I consider myself an intermediate photographer and idk I don't think I'm all too good but I have some neat stuff that you guys would never get to see otherwise. Some of you may also know me as the fag who bought a fucked up 500cm. I also posted some Osprey pics about a year and a half ago that are NOT most of these. INFO: This was taken during/after a dust storm. I think the storm happened while I was sleeping or off shift and when I came to the flightline everything looked bretty cool. Seeing the wall of sand whenever we were outside for a dust storm was pretty fucking epic in the true sense of the word.

Yep, the rotorblade striking the dust particles does that, mostly visible in IR.
There are military IR camera footages showing this lots were made in Dessert Storm.

Yeah the rotors are mechanically indexed to get into that position before rolling the nacelles down. The engines and gearboxes dont like to sit in helicopter mode and doing maintenance on the things is 1000% easier rolled down as well.

Ok so here is the motion blur blades.
I REMEMBER why I didnt take so many pictures like this, because when I just looked for it I saw all the insane amounts of dust my poor bby camera had accumulated after months of abuse in the sandbox. Here is a quick edit I did after a sloppy tango with the sliders and spot removal tool.
I'll post the OOC image too so you can see just how bad my poor camera got. It's why I shot so many of these shots at F4 or wider, the dust was so fucking bad.

I had to deal with this pretty much during the last three months of deployment. I tried going to the combat camera guys to ask if they had a way to clean their sensors but they had fucking nothing. Pretty stupid if you ask me but it's the marines.
There was a Canadian military camera chick on our base and I saw some of her shots they she got to take in a refueling tanker of Canadian F18s refueling from her aircraft, they were fucking INCREDIBLE and I don't think I have them but I will look for them. If I cant find them I will text my flight surgeon who got them from her.

I'd like to say it's a combination of us both. Fuji lenses truly are upper crust. If I had less dust on my sensor for my time on deployment I would have stopped down more to get better sharpness, but the 56mm was my main lens (at the time I only had it and the kit zoom, both lenses being phenominal. I've since bought the 35mm (50 equiv) prime)

wearing all that gear as I took these in air photos. I handled everything involved with the cabin in-flight: cargo, passengers, searching for other aircraft/obstacles, manning machine gun, and helping pilots take down information or look at maps- although they rarely needed help as they were actually trained on navigation and we had to pick up scraps of learning as our careers moved along.
My duties also included aircraft inspections and maintenance. I'll be honest though I fucking haaated maintenance, at least on this aircraft because they made everything a fucking horrible mess to work around. I tried to do more inspections than maintenance. Maybe it's because of my personality. Maintenance requires a certain kind of temperament, not the kind belonging to a guy who likes artsy photography, you know? I'm not against turning wrenches but V22 work is so fucking difficult I just wasn't about it.

My buddy after one of his first flights. My MOS was to be a crewchief, but mechanics who show promise and aptitude can apply to be aerial observers, which is pretty much the same thing.
He's a really great mechanic and one of my best friends so I was glad to do his first flight with him. (It probably wasnt his first flight on the Osprey, on occasion the squadron does "motovational" flights and they let normies take a ride. It was his first flight as an active crew member)
I love when these guys have their first flights because they like to joke about how easy they think our job is because we just "sit around" during the flight. Then we get back and they are tired af and glad to peel off their sweat drenched vests and realize there was actually a good amount of active participation involved. A different work climate than maintenance when you have more time to work smoothly.

I only saw one town in SA, as we flew into it to pick up like 60 marines who were doing an exercise. I got to see the town from a helicopter perspective, it was basically how you'd imagine, no women to be seen (I was looking for them) and everything was just falling apart, paint peeling, shitty cars, crummy buildings.

Im happy to say it seems like it's all fixed now. Now the only obstacle is finding a proper scanner for the negatives to preserve perfect sharpness.
I also do not own a macro lens to do my own neg scanning and my X-T1 is my only digital camera. I've seen scans from an X-T1 and they dont seem to be any better than an Epson or whatever

There were actually only a few limitations on what I could shoot. Stuff on the screens of the cockpit for example.
There's nothing in these photos that really give away kind of critical information about anything.
I gained a reputation as the "squadron photographer" all the way up to the CO and I sold a shit ton of these photos people when we got back. I would be super happy if I could get a job doing this kind of photography. All I need is a 70-200 for my X-T1 and I'd be golden.

I was wondering if you could give me your opinion on focal lengths.
I am looking to purchase a new lens, I currently have a 35mm prime which I love. My options are between an even wider 25mm and an 85mm lens.
I figure that going for the 25mm is a silly purchase **for a second lens** since it is close to my current focal length. But I am worried that 85mm is too tight.
That being said, I noticed that the focal length you were working with was 84mm equivalent -- and it looked like you were able to grab some amazing shots with good background context. However, I also noticed there were times where some elements of the photo were cut out.
So, my main question revolves around how you felt your lens was able to capture the subject and context properly. Or were you constantly wishing you had a wider lens?

I had the fuji kit lens with me and although I hardly took wide shots I got some good ones.
I say go for the 85mm man it's wonderful for portraits and you don't need to take full body shots of people, just of what matters. Yeah you may not be able to back up far enough to get the FULL shot but imo you dont need to most of the time.
I found a nice one I like for you to see.
It's all about your personal style dude. Honestly I think getting a lens thats only a bit wider than your 35mm is a bad idea. Get the 85mm. It gives everything a nice flatness and makes everyone look significantly more photogenic

combat camera don't know anything about cameras, photography, or otherwise. machine gun spray and pray and send it quick to the rear. no one bothered to carry cameras with them. I only did because a) plt cmdr so no one was going to tell me no, b) cameras are sort of useful for intel shots, and c) I could grab some good pictures every so often. Combat camera can suck a dick.

sorry m8, I Smashed my lenses because they were full of fucking sand and at one point of deployment I got lifted up and blown away into a pile of rocks and my camera body's screen got cracked. I sent in all my shit to MACK warranty (I know I know but it payed off) and got back all new shit.
The sand rekt my lenses but other than smothering my sensor didn't affect my body too bad. Maybe some grinding under the dials but it never seemed
to last. Remember the body is weather sealed.
Fuji spares no expense at making their bodies and lenses strongly constructed. I'll have you know that I smacked the front element hard as I could 2-3 times before it even started to chip, and quite a few more times before it actually got fucked. A dry or slightly damp lint-free rag was all i needed for day-to-day cleaning. I wore the camera around my neck and sometimes also put the strap through one of the various attachment points on my vest.

NOT my image, but I didn't have any long exposure/night time street photography examples, so I grabbed the best one I could. Honestly, it probably looks closest to something like Fuji Velvia/Chrome given that its a Fuji camera, but it just had that distinct color film look.
