Are you using an adapterwith correction lenses?
If so, then that's surprisingly good quality.
If not, then there's no way the adapter could be causing colour abberations.

Well I have the macro 50, the 50/1.4, and the 50L.
Compared to those, the 1.4 is a shitbucket.
I literally only took one comparison shot between it and the L on the same roll in the same light, and the difference in contrast and sharpness wide open blew me away.
But funnilly enough, when you look a "reviews" of the 50/1.4 on the innernettes, they are all really positive.
I have no doubt you could sell that 400 to a nexfag for a motza if tele wasn't your thing.
If macro is your thing, on the other hand, I don't see why you'd ever need to buy another 50mm.

I've had really great results with the macro lens. Definitely a keeper. I was looking at the 50L, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price in comparison to a more modern lens with autofocus, even if it's a bit slower.

If you're going to shoot it on an EF mount Canon, then absolutely not.
If you're going to shoot patrician film, or a full frame sony, then fire away, it's a great lens.
One of the few lenses you could consider potentially as an investment as well; it's a 'last and best of its kind' spectacle of engineering, and they're not making any more of them, it will always have collectors value.
