If you can give me a good reason for why you care, I'll tell you. I'm holding the same camera right now.
because if i can remove any gear related excuse for being bad, i can start to get better.
I need to change my old reflex

You're dramatically over-valuing the camera in terms of responsibility for image quality. If you get a Rebel Xt, your camera will most likely not be at fault for image quality issues you have.
If you want results like a fellow photographer, learn how he lights, learn how he processes, and then go to places where he goes. Buying his camera will do LITERALLY nothing. The word literally is not strong enough to back up the power and truth of that statement, but it's what I've got.
Camera bodies are more or less interchangeable unless you're in extreme situations like shooting F1 in the dark, or shooting astro. For skateboarding, or portraiture, or travel, any non-point and shoot camera will do, and any non point and shoot camera will do perfectly.
