First time ever posting here. I just started using Lightroom yesterday and would really appreciate any and all comments on how to improve. Photos were taken couple of weeks ago in Mongolia.

I like the B&W, the texture, shadows, etc. THe only thing that I don't like that much is the framing.

Really inspired already. I've always wanted to go take photos of the neat industrial buildings around where I live but i never have because I'd be borderline trespassing. Do you have any tips as to doing so or are you fortunate in being able to know that you're allowed near them?

That framing why?
>>
>>2721653
I was thinking the same thing

How hard is it to get a level or step back to see if it's crooked or not
>>
>>2721659
Well in the "grungy skanky lifestyle" look, I don't care about level so much, but chopping the shoe and leaving black wall headroom at the top, it irks me. If you're going to go wrong on the composition, go WAY wrong so it feels intentional and gritty, rather than just... "I was distracted by a pretty lady and forgot"
>>
>>2721660
I was talking about the picture hanging on the wall

the 'framing' if you will

That frame was retort. It was an ancient photo and i wasnt allowed to even touch it for straighten it a bit.
And that frame wasnt photoshopped straight because people want it original. Dont ask me why.
>>
>>2721673
No, I love that the picture frame is crooked, I don't like that you framed the photo poorly when you took it, so that you cropped her foot, but left a bunch of room at the top of the image. The picture frame being crooked supports the feel of the image, and is a nice touch, though accidental.

Nice atmosphere, but it needs a focal subject to exist in that atmosphere, and also needs some processing to support the emotion of the scene. Composition is simple but pretty nice, though it seems like that may have been an accident.
>>
>>2721660
And about cropped shoe, all my fault. There were like other 10 people in front of that bed, all taking photos of grill. I just put my camera above heads and tried to do my best to capture all the bed from above... But i kinda fail so bad.

I am a brand new amateur.

Still learning the exposure triangle and how to use a DSLR, apparently the lens that came with my camera is shitty, but I don't know I think I just suck ass. My eyes are really shit, so everything is blurry through the view finder, I can only kind of estimate and guess if things are in focus right now.

90% of the photos I take are blurry pieces of shit.

I got a few photos that I put through light room that ive been toying around with that im comfortable enough showing.

2 photos are of the same subject, but I am wondering which one is better.

theres a reason i didnt share these.. not as strong or interesting, the mountains is often a bit hard, because of the smog, i want to get a polarizer, but i dont know if that helps.. Im travelling to the other side of the mountain you see here soon thoug, where there's not as much smog..

you should take photos in daylight at first, much easier to get things right. these are all underexposed. you shouldve gotten in close with the deer, right now it isnt the subject of the photo at all. i wouldve gotten a tripod, or just put the camera on some rocks or some shit, and taken a long exposure photo of the deer, with the backlights of the cars streaking past, and if that wouldve been possible (doubtit), the mountains. in the back.

i was thinking about getting closer but its a major highway and there were 2 cops pulling people over so I was too much of a pussy too.

Idk the subject of the photo isnt necessarily of the deer i was kinda thinking it was the juxtaposition of the beautiful mountainous background with the shitty depressing area i live in, the deer is just a part of it.

also the blue one is underexposed, but I don't know I posted it because I really liked just how high contrast it was, I want to take more pictures with extremely high contrast, lots of pure blacks mixed in with obscure imagary.

But yeah I suck balls though, I will try to expose my images more, the only problem is im a shaky cunt and they are always blurry. ill get a tripod. Also still learning how to use Iso correctly.

Not too bad for a first start. The colors are "wrong" but attractive. Composition is good, something mildly interesting going on in the frame. Nicely done. Exposure could be about two stops brighter, and in trying to figure out why, I see you're in Manual mode at ISO 200, and I'm not sure why you'd do that.

No reason not to be in shutter priority with auto ISO for scenes like this.
>>
>>2721911
your photo would probably benefit from raising the shadows and a little pull in the highlights in terms of processing.
not going to comment on composition in such an obvious crop.

forgot to say hi.. hi, nice to have you around.
I like this one better compositionwise, but why did you use f/1.4 here? I mean it works better in this one than the first one you posted, but you might generally consider stopping down to f/2 or f/2.8 for these kinds of shots in low light. ISO up to 800 (or even higher) shouldn't be a problem and a speed of 1/100 or 1/150s is probably ok to capture these.

9/10 , magazine quality shot, I disagree with >>2721913 I think the exposure is right, it gives the photo a nighttime mood. It'd be interesting to see the photo with a faster exposure so that the spinning pot was clear. As it is, the pot is blurred, which conveys a sense of motion. It's a purely artistic choice, but if you DID want to achieve that 'frozen moment in time' look you'd have to up the iso to say 400 or 800 to compensate for the reduction in light from the reduced exposure time.

I like this. Pretty nice lighting and composition and it's a cool photo even though I feel like I've seen something similar many times. Could use some exposure bump on the right side especially around her left eye.
>>
>>2722013
Either you're samefagging the fuck out of your own photo, or people are getting worked up over a mediocre snapshit.

The framing is horrid, the road at the bottom is not centred and you've got distracting telephone poles taking up half the sky. You could have easily taken a couple steps to your left and fixed both of those problems. The mood is alright and I like the colours, but the subject blends in too much with his brown jumper.

My eyes are drawn to the girl on the left. There's a narrative I see between her generally attractive face and the unfortunate acne that she has. The mask presents a flawless facade that she wishes were her real face. Crop it.

I have a D5300 to take product photos at work. Since I'm that guy with a 'nice' camera I was asked to take pictures at a birthday party. It was actually pretty nice. I was hungover as fuck and it provided relief.

It's something I'm starting to consider doing on weekends, but I'm not sure if I should bother with at my experience level. I pretty much exclusively shoot at 55mm/f5.6 with the kit lens because bokeh is my crutch.

Thoughts?

Flash would make the water look weird. You don't need more light because it looks like your aperture is pretty small; open that lens up. You might need to use manual focus because your depth of field will be smaller, but this is a set up shot so there's no time constraints, so that's fine. You might even be able to get away with a lower (200 probably) iso if you open your lesne up all the way, even if you have a very fast exposure.

If you really feel you need more light use diffused light, not a flash. I avoid using a flash like the plague.
>>
>>2722165

You need to use a flash because the duration of the exposure is extremely short, around 1/5000-1/10000 of a second or so. You'll have a hell of a hard time doing that with available light.

I would wager that 99% of all high speed photography is done with a flash. If you don't know what you're talking about, please refrain from offering your opinion.
>>
>>2722169
His ISO is only at 400 and his aperture is small as fuck, he doesn't need a flash to get a sharp shot of the water.
>>
>>2722171

I think you're underestimating how fast a shutter speed you'll actually need at such a short working distance to freeze even the most leisurely moving subject.

b b but what will the normies think when youre using flash in broad daylight!!!????

on the serious: is that shot fucking worth bringing a flash with a diffuser, and a reflector? or are you just using some poor noobie as a stepping stone, trying to showoff your basic knowledge of photographic technicalities to a bunch of strangers on the internet?

yeah, go ahead. make this a pasta for the next buttlord with a superiority complex looking to boost his confidence in a recent photo thread
>>
>>2722197
Whether to use flash as a last resort or a first option seems to be a matter of great contention among photographers.
>>
>>2722186
The clouds look cool, but the ground is way too muddled. Try dropping the ISO and increasing the exposure. Did you use a tripod?

It really isn't. Pretty much any legitimate guide for high speed photography tells you to use a flash.
>>
>>2722209
HDR might have worked well for >>2722186 so that you could have more detail on the dark hills in the foreground without blowing up the bright city in the background.
>>
>>2722210
They say the subject must be well lit. How to light up your subject is a matter of artistic preference, time, and expense. Obviously there are some cases where the only practical way to light up your moving subject is a flash. I don't think this is one of them.
>>
>>2722213

It's got nothing to do with being well lit and everything to do with freezing motion. A flash does an immensely better job of freezing motion than a shutter ever could. Period.
>>
>>2722214
>It's got nothing to do with being well lit and everything to do with freezing motion. A flash does an immensely better job of freezing motion than a shutter ever could. Period.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.
>>
>>2722217

great argument. really proved me wrong.
>>
>>2722219
Please, tell us Anon, how does a flash 'freeze motion' exactly?
>>
>>2722224

The duration of the time that the subject is lit is very short when you use a flashgun, 1/10,000 of a second or shorter. Since you're only capturing 1/10,000 of a second of movement, it is effectively frozen. It works exactly like a shutter, except I'll wager that no one in this thread has a shutter that can open for 1/10,000 of a second, much less 1/20,000 or 1/30,000.

Look up stroboscopy and Harold Edgerton.
>>
>>2722229
>none of you fags have a camera that can do 1/10,000
>you should use a flash gun and a camera that can do 1/10,000 to take snapshits of water fountains

What
>>
>>2722229
I wasn't aware a consumer camera's flash was so fast.
>>
>>2722229
Wouldn't this technique only work in a dark room? Otherwise the film/sensor will continue to be exposed by the ambient light as long as the shutter is open, no?
>>
>>2722232

Yep! They're insanely fast and give great results, which is why they're so common. In fact, speedlights are often much better at freezing motion than big professional studio strobes.

>>2722233

It works BEST in a dark room, but you can still get adequate results by stopping down to kill ambient light and moving the flash closer to the subject.

Although, now that I think about it, this might produce an interesting double exposure effect, with a sharp image of the subject produced by the flash gun's light exposing the the sensor 'inside' a blurred image of the subject produced by the ambient light exposing the senor throughout the period the shutter was open. This would show the motion of the subject while also its detail. Hmmm...
>>
>>2722237
Do most cameras let you change the speed of its flash? I can't find that setting on my camera.
>>
>>2722248

It's governed by flash power. Full power is the slowest, and it gets faster as you decrease output.
>>
>>2722237
I'd still like to see the shot >>2722106 with a faster shutter speed, say 1/2000 of a second. I bet the water would look pretty sharp at that speed, desu.
>>
>>2722249
So if there was a decent amount of ambient light, you would have to get RIGHT up to the subject, because you'd have such a small aperture from stopping down, and such a dim flash.

Try shooting a longer exposure time with a wider aperture and put the iso down a bit. You could probably keep it at around 1200 or so but you could do a 30 second exposure with a remote and a tripod

Well, besides playing with CS/Lightroom, what did you try to achieve with this one?
Shooting trees with no leaves can give good results if you know of golden ratio, fibonacci sequence and so on.
But here it doesn't say anything.
>>
>>2722569
Uh, what's CS or lightroom? I just ran it through Googles photo edit and tuned up for the turquoise filter to change the sky. I don't own a computer atm, but most of my old photos are edited in Photoshop. I think what I aimed for was the barren look with the blue sky, a hint of grunge and simplicity. Thanks for the cc though, I'll definitely look into it.
>>
>>2722251

No, a small aperture would mean that you could be further away and still have the subject in acceptable focus. Actually, aperture has nothing to do with subject distance, which is really just focus.

It's worth noting that you would really need to get the flash off the camera for this. If you don't already have a flashgun, you should strongly consider it for your next photography purchase, way ahead of a new lens or a tripod or anything like that.
>>
>>2722521

Those aren't /p/'s rules, moron.

Here are where /p/'s rules actually are:

http://www.4chan.org/rules#p

>/p/ - Photography
>Only upload images that you, the photographer, have taken.
>Post only photos that show at least trace amounts of thoughtful composition. Do not upload random snapshots.
>Even though EXIF data is made available when encoded, please post as much relevant technical information as possible, such as: camera, kit, lens, etc.
>Include a short description with your photograph, such as when and where it was photographed and under what circumstances.
>As with the art critique board, only constructive criticism will be tolerated.

Nothing about file size in there. The only actual rule about file size is nothing over (i think) 7500 pixels and 5 megabytes, and those are actually enforced by the board. There's also a weird soft rule wherein 4chan will say that you are trying to upload "an image with an embedded file", but that only happens for hyper-detailed jpegs with a file size that is suspiciously large for the resolution. If a file is too big for you, don't click on it. Otherwise, get the fuck over yourself and stop shitting up this board.
>>
>>2722577
Did you not see the big sticky, right there when you go into /p/?
>Please post images that are JPG format, smaller than 1 MB, and/or about 1000 pixels on the longest side.
>>
>>2722564
this is actually pretty good.
>>
>>2722572
The Adobe CS "family" (Creative Suite) includes photoshop and other shit, so I meant photoshop, lightroom is like a variation of photoshop aimed to work as a darkroom.
Sorts pictures, work with curves, filters, etc., batch modify stuff, etc. It's handy.

>>2722577
Resizing isn't a written rule at "admin" level, but it's a community accepted guideline that's encouraged a lot.
Just like being a good neighbor, try to be a good fellow poster, or accept that people will go out of their way to shit on you.
>>

Sticky isn't the rules, bruh. It really isn't. In fact, I would say it does more harm than good at this point, since there are all these newfags who assume the sticky was written by some elder /p/ god AND NOT EGGY (of all fucking people), and slavishly cling to it like they're Moses's tablets. In so doing, they derail dozens of threads for a long string of posts with shitposting when all they really have to do is not click on the fucking photo. File size and dimensions are right there in the post header. It's not like you weren't warned.

Thanks a bunch. I always avoided the other products, mostly because I didn't know what they were but it seems I'll have to write a few things on my wish list this year. Again, thanks. ;)

Since 1000p has been a thing since basically /p/ started, I don't see the point of your complaint.
Before having a sticky some called them out or ignored them, but newfags didn't know.
Now we have a sticky, and people still don't do it, so there will be someone who will complain instead of ignoring.

Well, I guess there's context to work with.
So the cross/jesus is your main subject, and the usual way to compose around it is to give it a context that's more interesting.
Depends on the geography of the place, but a different angle and different focal length to start with.
You could also pick a different time of the day, or a completely different day (for a different sky).
Ideas:
Try to simplify it.
Integrate the subject better with it's surroundings, there's a town and hills there, so put it in better perspective but avoid messy or uninteresting backgrounds.
Or if the sky/light is interesting at one point, take a sharp portait of jesus.
Whatever else you think is interesting.

Thank you, Anon.
I wanted to have the cross and the cathedral that's in the background (Beauvais Cathedral) in the same shot, but I guess it wasn't too much of a good idea.
This place was pretty nice, gotta go back in summer.

Have a Louis XIV.

Well, I guess it's because you know the cathedral is there, but I didn't even see it.
It's too far away and blurry. You'd need to make sure the cathedral stands out and is interacting with the subject instead of being part of the background.

Thanks.
Yeah, it was about 4 km/2.5 miles away. I came for the view on the opposite side and didn't even expect it to be visible when I arrived.
