Anyway, first time shooting the cars with the flash. Not totally happy with the job I've done, I didn't pick a good enough background and i haven't got the technique for using the flash on cars right yet, I tried to just adapt what I did on bikes and it didn't quite work perfectly.
For next time I'm either gonna try and pick up an LED panel and get light painting or try and find a strip box that I can fold down to fit on my bike.

yes bringing your own light source is probably the best way to deal with having no light but that brings with it it's own pains, some general tips that don't require much extra gear or editing would be.
1. Tripod, every time.
2. Clean your front element, artificial light sources, street lights, car headlights etc. will make it flare very strongly.
3. get a lens hood, other street lights will fuck up your contrast.
4. Don't rely on autofocus when it's dark, do a test exposure.

Talk to me about racetracks, /p/. I've got some vacation time stacked up, and I think it's high time to visit one of the greats. Sebring, Laguna Seca, Le Mans, the Ring, Spa, GPLB, Mosport, Gilles Villeneuve etc.
But tell me, how is shooting at these tracks, and how is it getting around them? I dont want to pay for a flight only to find out I can only watch the race from the shitty grandstands, let alone take photos from the corners.
Laguna Seca is topping my list right now, since it's easy to get to, April weather is mild, and it's a small circular track.

Different anon but I spend a lot of time at road courses. Go to Laguna seca if it's near. Most road courses let you wander around the center of the course/paddock and up to the fences. The best spots usually require credentials. Take a telephoto for the racing and a decently wide lens for in the paddock.
If you want good light look for endurance races that go into the night. Villeneuve is the only track in your list I can think of that might restrict movement around the track, but I'm not sure.

I'm fine with the photo taking part (if being a total amateur is fine), it's the track specific tips that I'm looking for.
For example, I know Mosport has shuttle service to get out to turn 5 during the bigger races. Saves you a lot of walking. Turn 5 is excellent for catching action. You can see all of the last turn and all of the first turn from the general seating (read: grassy hill) along the front straight, and with a long lens, see right into the pits. This gives you the opportunity to catch cars as they go through (spin) the first right hand sweeper, or hit up the last left/right onto the front straight. Lots of space along the fence too. Turn 2/3 don't have much photo opportunity. You can get close to the fence, but it's very awkward. You get real close to the cars at 2's bridge, and the marshall's station at 8. Pic related, shot from 8. 105mm equiv is much too long, but I was so busy having fun, I didn't really chimp and decide to switch to a wide angle.
The paddock area is easy to walk through, and pretty great. The lower end series aren't usually fenced off, so you can get close to the cars and take a look. Just don't intrude on the actual pit areas. Track food isn't bad, for track food.

Go to office depot and pick up the biggest white cardboards you can find. Use a cstand and line it up with the curves of the car. Shine the light on the card. That way you won't have shitty reflections of your gear and can detail the curves of the car. Also try: Wetting the ground, spraying some smoke behind the car, finding a location that has a better look to it.

No, that won't work at all. It will look exactly the same as the softbox he used.
He just needs to pay closer attention to the positioning of the light as it is relative to the camera lens and ensure that the flash is not visible on the reflection of the car.
...or ensure that the flash is positioned in a place on the body lines that accentuates the body lines of the car.
Soft light is nice, but it isn't necessary for cars.

I've shot at the 12 hours of sebring a few times (which I definitely recommend, lots of good spots to shoot from without credentials). advice:
show up a few days early for all of the practice sessions and qualifying. this will give you way more opportunities and also let you scout out good spots.
get a paddock pass or whatever will get you the most access.
lower level racing leagues and lower level tracks will generally give you more access; shooting anything at all F1 is impossible without press credentials, but local level sprint cars you can go wherever, shoot anything.

I use a Younguo YN-300 panel at the moment, but Im looking for something a little brighter and usable with a large rectangular softbox. Im honestly not sure where to even begin looking. I've shot Le Mans.
Get a grandstand seat, especially above the pitlane. Everyone leaves their seats an hour in so you can go to the front, get panning shots on the start/finish straight and pit action.
Then get buses our to Mulsane and Porsche curves and learn the French for "can I borrow your lader for a minute" although this isn't necessary.
Also can get great shots after Dunlop bridge up to Tetre Rouge too, and is super comfy shooting as the sun comes up

A photo portraying real life objects in natural environments should look true to life.
The highlights along the top right side of the car don't look natural at all, compared to the level of illumination in the shaded area. They were clearly dodged in. If it were natural light (or a flash, I suppose), then the shaded area would be lighter around where the bumper is, as the sun peeks over the wall to catch the top of the car. Get rid of those, and the picture becomes 100% better.

you should be fine, I'm 6'4 and fit in one stock but can't drive it due to leg length. If you do have troubles you can either bolt the seat to the floor or take out some foam from the seat (or both) the foam worked for me
Artificially added the blur to the background on this one (shot at 1/1000 or something) just using the motion blur tool in PS.
Can't think of a way to add little ripples to the blur without the new version of virtual rig though.

the door sill trim photo was photoshopped, I took the bottom half of the lit door and reflected it across the x axis to "light" the top half.

Stock suspension is fine. I just found it too floaty and the body roll annoyed me. People usually either invest in sway bars or suspension. Having both makes it too stiff as you want some body roll. I chose suspension for the height and damper adjustability. I'd only install coil overs if you want those things. Make sure you buy quality coil overs though.

If that's the case I'd say go for it. They're my favourite mod to the car I've done so far. Tires aren't that expensive, here in Australia plenty of reputable tire companies have a 4 for 3 type of deal going and could get a good set for $500 isn aud. I've got Beidgestone RE003's on there at the moment which I would recommend to anyone who uses it as a daily. Great tire. I think they cost me $800 aud or something for 4. But that wasn't a 3for 4 deal. They didn't have the sale on when I bought them and I didn't want to wait.

It really depends on the event. I've shot a few races where they haven't bothered verifying what publication I was shooting for and others where they only care about circulation numbers and web presence. There's usually a set number of passes for a given event so the bigger the event, the more top level press attends and therefore less passes available for the little guys.

I agree but without the negative space it felt very cramped on the sides at that aspect ratio, the car is level but not perpendicular to the wall. You wouldn't believe how much of a pain it is to get a car perfectly perpendicular to a wall inside a hanger. Thanks for the kind words.

flattered, it goes to show gear isn't everything. I shot it with a old Rebel T1i + 18-55mm kit lens mounted to my tripod though I'm regularly shooting with my Rebel T2i + 15-85mm or 50mm for my other photos like the one of the 135i, Clown Shoe Z3 M Coupe or the Orange M3 above

I like the photo, though I would've positioned the car in front of the water fountain and not shoot at a standing height but rather level with the side mirrors of the car. too much editing over the phone can make those weird halos around the clouds, steer away from those.
also for next time, make sure all your windows are closed, you chose an awesome time to take photos in, fog and the morning light looks awesome.

I'm finding it more difficult than I anticipated to get everything symmetrical though, the tripods I'm using are very cheap ones that are different sizes, and the speedlites themselves are a 430ex ii and a yn600 lel

picked up an LED light (yongnuo yn-300) and took it out for a quick spin tonight at a few close locations
not obviously happy with my technique thus far but I guess that's all the process of learning

for a mobile phone light, these look rather good, although I find the muddiness of the wheels and tyres a bit distracting
I like to light paint with something nice and soft, most of the time I use a $10 square LED torch from a hardware store, and a homemade stripbox
keep trying again and again to get nice even light on the car, even if it means taking 30 shots of the same angle lel

Get this when it comes out, I've been using the yn-300 which is fantastic but this will be better! I can only use the yn-300 on low settings for paining it's so bright so this will be perfect

Hey does anyone use the RX100 for car photography? I've been thinking about getting one and know very little about photography, only used point and shoots. I want to try and avoid using things like adobe photoshop and just use the pictures from the camera itself.
I'm not publishing to blogs or anything, just for personal use at auto shows and car meetups etc.
Option 2 is the A6000 + 50mm F1.8 prime lens. I want to keep things small and compact

I'd go witth a DSLR or mirrorless of some kind, the larger sensors would give you more flexibility regarding DOF and longer exposures
it doesn't look like the RX100 has a front filter thread either, and a polarising filter is essential for shooting cars a majority of the time
