The low-light performance on the 50D is not the best, but it's usable for web, not so much larger prints.
I rented that fisheye just so I could use it at this show because I knew it would've came in handy, but I didn't end up using it as much as I thought I would. All the shots I took with it were at the same spot. (except a couple other photos that I didn't end up choosing to edit)
I couldn't go up to the balcony because it 21+ to be up there, even though I told them I was just going up there to take photos. Which was lame because I did plan on taking a shot of the whole venue with that fisheye from up there :/
Overall it was a great learning experience, and a fun show.

that's bullshit about the balcony. it really depends on how dumb the security is. this one venue i shoot a lot doesn't give a shit for the most part but every now and then if i try shooting balcony they'll kick me out. it's a lot about confidence (and a physical pass to flash. and being 21)
we all start somewhere. keep shooting and keep learning. concert photography is fun. shoot every show you can and hit as many genres as possible.

I raise the Luminance setting for Noise Reduction in Adobe Lightroom to around 20, anymore than that, my images lose sharpness drastically.
The venue I went to gave me a bright orange wristband to show to security that I tried to flash and go up to the balcony.
The next show I get a photo pass I will be much more confident with dealing with security, and my shooting privileges.

always hold your camera in the air too. always. like even just walking through the crowd it'll make you look like you're working (you are)
get in with a publication that covers local music. that's the best way of doing it consistently. send them your work and a list of shows you would be interesting in covering (shows you want to go to in general)

This. There are barley any pictures without the distracting stage lights on the bottom half of the picture.
Other angles would have been great too. Like carlo said, just be more confident, you are there to work so it shouldn't matter if you are 21.
You can also always try to sneak on stage a little, just talk to the tour manager or owner and tell them that you'd like to do some shots from behind the DJs, it usually works.
Don't be afraid to get into the crowd either, pictures of everybody with their hands up just always look nice as you can see the reaction of the people towards the music, which is something that we rarely see on your pictures.

It it seriously the best feeling telling the bouncer/ticket checker that you're on the list.
I rented the EF 8-15mm f/4L until this Monday just in case I was able to get on the list with a photo pass for the MM show. Alabama Shakes are playing there on Monday, but I was unable to get a photo pass. It was a show I personally wanted to go to, but didn't want to spend the money on the tickets because they doubled the price from $25 to $50, and I don't feel like the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR is worth that much money.
Hopefully all goes well tonight, will report back later with pictures and updates.

I'm late to this one but you can always ask your email contact if there's a barrier or not. it's the venue's choice 99% of the time
so yeah if there's no barrier then skip the line, talk to the door ppl and explain that you need a good spot for photo, and you should be good. most of the time they'll let you in but I've had a few times where they told me to go to the back of the line

Thanks those were my favorite ones too. Most of the band was pushed far back in the stage with no lighting on them except the lead singer, guitar player, and keyboard player. They had two drummers practically hidden on stage lol.
I dig the shot I got of the 'Mimicking Birds' drummer. The only downside to that photo is the gross noise the 50D gives in low-light :/
I've contacted a couple bands to shoot for upcoming, hopefully they get back to me with positive news.

small ones are probably not gonna give you anything
medium ones might give you a bit. the one I worked with would give me $25 per photo they printed, which was usually one per show I shot
big ones will pay you better but you're not gonna get with a big one. couldn't give details because i haven't shot for a local big one

I just contacted two small-ish Portland-based music publications. Hopefully I could become one of their photographers, it would definitely help secure a photo pass. Much better than just saying I am an independent photographer shooting for my own website.
But then again, I've only contact three bands for photo passes so far, and two have said yes. Not a bad success rate, but not as cool as being published.
