Hey /p/, hope everyone enjoyed their thanksgiving. I will be photographing two shows in about three weeks in NYC for the first time, a friend of a friend is hooking me up with some tickets and press passes and I'm pretty stoked. I will be shooting with my Canon 6D and nifty fifty (50mm 1.8). I have a range of other lenses I could use, but they are all pretty shitty and can't stop down very low... anyway, what kind of white balance should I be using to photograph the bands? The lighting is constantly changing... Any advice would be appreciated. Also general concert/show photography thread

I go M and find some settings that are close to what I want and fix everything in post. I'd rather not miss a moment while I'm changing settings.

do you use a custom white balance? or just roll with fluorescent or incandescent?

auto. there's going to be changes in the lighting CONSTANTLY and there's no point in stressing there. zero. don't listen to anyone.

>lenses
depending on the production value of the show I think you can bring some more. I suggest borrowing a lens from someone you know if you can. buy them lunch in return.

if the show is at a bigger and better venue, you're fine. obviously the better the lens the better the IQ but you can always sacrifice shit for noise and a bit of motion blur, but be careful

here's a shot of andrew wk from the beginning of the month. haven't been shooting many shows lately but things will pick up again soonish.

awb is shit. I am very hesitant to use it. thank you for the advice though. And unfortunately I don't have any close friends with L series EF lenses. They all have crop sensor cameras
>>
>>2712612
white balance literally doesn't mean shit in concert photography. wanna use something else? sure. but it probably won't actually make a difference unless the lights are stationary

and speaking of which, spending time changing your WB is time that could be spent changing other settings

crop sensors can be preferred in certain concert shooting situations also

I hate to be that guy, and I'm only saying this to help you, but 'stopping down' is making the aperture smaller. "Opening up" is the layman term for shooting wide open.
>>
you're gonna need some sort of wide angle

Depends on the venue but i usually take a 50mm and a 20mm (on FF).
Settings to start off with, fine tune as you go:
1/200
f4
ISO 1600-2000

Never worry about white balance. If you don't shoot RAW then you're going to come away with few useable photos anyway. WB will be the least of your worries.

My guitar teacher actually asked me to photograph his band's next performance.
I have a Sony Alpha 58 with the Kit Lens, and since on 55mm this would be f/5.6 I am thinking that the ISO I'd have to use would be too high to get photographs without too much noise...

Shooting everything at 18mm doesn't really seem like an option either.
>>
>>2712759
I've shot lots of concerts with my a65 and a77 but I always end up using my 50mm f/1.8 because I absolutly need those extra stops of light. So I suggest you go out and borrow or rent at least an f/1.8 lens but f/1.4 would be even better.

Shoot in RAW and just tweak it in Lightroom or your preferred editor after the fact, its no different than changing it in camera.

This. Plus, awb can often inexpicably change its settings even if the scene lights don't change...so , I usually shoot in RAW choosing any wb except awb

Like others said, set the WB to anything and adjust it in Lightroom afterwards.

What kind of show will it be?
Bar, club, stadium? Rock, hip hop, techno?
Have you ever been to the venue before as a guest?

Two rock shows, one at gramercy theatre and one at irving plaza both in manhattan. I have not been to either before, and I'm entirely new to shooting shows as I have already mentioned...

The venues allow press photographers in front of the barrier for the first three songs, (of the headliner I guess?), so like will it be competetive amongst the other press photographers to get a good spot or like idk will everyone be chill
>>
>>2713049
where will I be waiting to get in front of the barrier? behind stage? or just up front on the right or the left where there is some sort of gate? At shows in the past that I have been to there is usually a gate of some sort off to the right...

has anyone shot at these venues before? Irving or Gramercy?

thanks in advance

look up youtube videos of the bands you're shooting AND shows at those venues

it should be chill. it isn't competitive unless there's a really big act playing or you're at a big venue really
>>2713050
some venues have you wait on the side. some have you go in right away. big shows will give you directions on where to go. I work with the people who put on all the shows in my town so they ask the artist where I can go and sometimes they let me on stage

no

do venues usually just let you in front of the crowd to photograph the headliner? or do they let you shoot the first three songs of the openers too? Does a photo pass give me access to backstage, or not?

Venues large enough to have a partitioned photo pit: First three songs for headliner and supports

Small venues, no pit: Do what you want basically. Flash is still frowned upon here so be careful about that.

Photo pass will only be for the photo pit and GA areas of the venue. You'll need a AAA pass or something to get backstage. That's all about who you know.

you usually get openers too but EVERY now and then you don't

if there's no photo pit then the policy doesn't really mean shit because there's zero way of controlling

no backstage. that's all access

So I've started doing some event/concert/low light photography and realize I don't know as much as I thought I did.

Anyhow here are some shots. WB is killing me, and hitting focus when I literally can't see what I'm shooting. C&C Apreesh, etc.

your composition is alright but man oh man you gotta work on finding the right settings

that's not really a big thing because you said you just started but you can't be shooting things at 1/50 then go to 1/400.

find a balance and find your formula. also you're gonna have to lower that f dog.

would like to see where this heads for you though
>>
>>2712571
i tried this recently. shot most at a small venue with my 50mm f/1.4. even at iso 3200 and aperture set at 1.4, i only had a stop or two left to play with the shutter speed. the people are constantly moving and of course very dark. i basically got stuck in one area because difficulty moving around leaving me really only 2 band members to get good shots of. and then there was a mic stand in the way of one band member during many shots. the end result due to fast movement and my bad focusing (i set it to 1 single af point) and noise reduction due to high iso was many shots were very soft. i'd like to post a few but people here are too brutal. maybe i'll try to pick 1 and post.
>>
>>2713707

I am not the poster you're talking to, but another noob with a question on your advice:

1.8, 1.4, 1.8, 1.4, 1.8... can't go much lower with starter glass, unless you're saying to just fix on the lowest and go with that?

Yeah, I get the shutter speed variance, but with the dude moving around I didn't like the motion blur @ anything slower.

I had to push it a lot in LR to even get something viewable.

And just how much wider than 1.4 do you think I'm supposed to shoot?

I like people's suggestions on setting WB to ANYTHING but auto, because it's all shit at clubs anyhow.

Q: How to hit focus when it's too dark/active for AF to nail it, but I can't see much through the viewfinder to know if I'm good on MF?
>>

sorry, meant the other way around. shoot 2.8 instead of 1.8

never shoot wide open at a show with a lens with an f-stop that low, or big? fuck. you know what I mean

>>2713852
I've constantly been told to do this but never really have. I tried once and it accidentally fired so I stopped

plus there's been a few shows that have told me not to even use the assist

Thanks

It was pretty fun. Do you shoot for bands pro bono?

I actually replied to a band looking for a photpgrapher who would work a gig for a beer as payment and they said I was too good. I was thinking wtf

yeah. I like shooting bands because it's fun. I got lucky getting a job that pays for it but it's a local only thing and I'm trying to travel

that's why I wanna tour. it'll pay for me to come along and maybe a tiny bit afterwards but it's more for the fun of it

that's hilarious. I know people who ask for merch in return and I get it but man I really do hate asking for shit

>>2714583
a nightmare band to shoot with no flash. low lights and fast movement are the literal two worst things combined
>>2714590

if you're gonna raise your camera above your head, look behind you and make sure there's nobody shooting

don't use your FUCKING flash, holy shit first three no flash is basically a music photographer meme yet some people don't get it

shoot everywhere else in the venue after your three

wear earplugs

i dunno

i just shot st. paul and the broken bones and i guess i'll dump a bit. SUPER fun band to shoot

I've shot My Morning Jacket too! My photo is from their 2015 tour. That photo looks like it was taken around 2012 for their tour for they latest album at the time, 'Circuital'

They put on an amazing show! Saw them at the Red Rocks, no photo pass.
