It depends what you want.
Best bang for buck is Pentax with the prism viewfinders, sensor shift stabilization and weather sealing, all /p/ agrees on it. A used K-30 or K-50 is around $300.
If you have access to lenses from one brand, it is better to get an entry level from that brand, like a Canon T6s or Nikon D3300/D5500. With Nikon the D3300 is said to be a very good deal with the D5x00 series adding very little to the D3x00.
Canon has somewhat worse sensors which get exaggerated here.
Best advice is get the one you feel more comfortable to use, try some in your local shop.
If you don't have a shop nearby just get a used Pentax off ebay.
I'd recommend getting a mirrorless only if you know what you are doing. With that, as a general dicking around entry level mirrorless, a used NEX 5r is a good choice, but feels weird in the hand compared to a proper grip on a DSLR.

Sensor integrated microprism PDAF can't detect as small movements as a proper optics based PDAF in DSLRs. Not to mention phase detection mostly works around the center of the image (due to physics) meaning the spread out PDAF Sony uses has even less data to work with. This is why you find the AF points grouped around the center in DSLRs.
With stills the difference is small because there is time for the contrast detection to help, but as soon as the subject is in motion, the hesitation will result in a lot of blurry out of focus shots. DSLR PDAF is much faster resulting in a lot more in focus shots, from 50% to 90%, where Sony A7 line only goes up to 30% keeper rate on moving subjects.
Not to mention most of these shootings involve telephoto lens making it a lot worse for the mirrorless AF systems.

No, because the optics formula involves more distance. It was developed with the mirror system, but it is very accurate. Putting a similar PDAF optics formula on the sensor, even reduced in size due to the shorter distance because of the lack of a mirror system, it would protrude so much from the focus plane it would interfere with the image, effectively putting small shadows on the surrounding pixels with size depending on the lens. It could be done with a longer flange distance and with optical limitations but it would make the camera even bigger than a DSLR.
Putting a proper separated PDAF system can be done with a mirror, like the SLT system, but Sony is already killing it because of reasons.

An A6000 is surprisingly close to a D4S with its PDAF already, and the newer Olympus' and Panasonics are also doing quite fine as far as I can tell.

The remaining problem seems to be with not so sharp lenses, but otherwise it is pretty much there already. And Sony is still improving in every generation.
The D4S and 1D X remain a bit better, yes, but I see no reason to assume that's an insurmountable obstacle.
Besides most people here won't care much. If you're shooting with like a D5500 or 5D II or something -like most of /p/ does- you currently have a worse AF system anyways.

Yesterday I picked up a Sony nex c3, which uses the same sensor as the pentax k5. Yes it has a couple of crutches - 200 iso is the minimum, there's no flash compensation for the Diddy little flash, no evf, the rear screen is mediocre at best and it has limited controls. But it was £20. This camera still woops every aps-c canon for image quality and fits in my pocket with a lens and flash attached! £20! I only went in the shop to buy a Sony battery for my a7, they wanted £40 for that, but the c3 came with a brand new one.

My favorite is Tmax, but if you're really wasting it you can get the cheap knockoff stuff (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007ALZSTA) I just got a roll of that, haven't tried it yet but it's supposed to be similar. You can save some money by getting the 100' roll and spooling it yourself as long as you have a dark place and some patience.

You can find them easy on ebay or amazon, just search for ir filter. The important part is the filter thread diameter which is usually written on the front of the lens. It's probably 52mm.

I went in, saw the body on its own for £50, asked to have a play and I found one of the buttons didn't work, so he said I could have it as is for £20. Took it home, gave it a clean and she's golden.
This is a second body for me, I use an a7 usually but wanted something I wouldn't care about on the beach/busy streets/in rain etc.
If this will be your only camera, look at the nex 5r if there isn't a huge price jump. It's a lot better built and much nicer to use without the caveats I found with the 3 - one of the reasons the c3 works for me is that I use lenses with manual aperture rings, which removes the need for a dial on the body.
Having said that. That's a fine little starting bundle that will definitely help you learn the basics. With both lenses it's not a bad price at all! (not that they are great lenses, but they will work fine for starting out).

So I'm looking to buy my first camera for pretty cheap, and was thinking about getting the Canon EOS Rebel T5 with 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses, and the Yungnuo 50mm f/1.8 lens. I found the all of it on sale for about $500 total instead of $800. I'm looking for at least pretty good camera for photos and videos, that are cheap too. Would this be good?

Different sharpness / resolving power (most lenses actually can't resolve anywhere near 24MP), different field of view, maybe different possibilities for your depth of field.
Obviously there also can be a difference in the quantity and quality of knobs and rings on your lens. And maybe it has built-in stabilization motors, maybe less noisy / faster / (marginally) more precise autofocus motors, weather sealing, a rotate-able tripod mount, or other features.

Depends. Old lenses often have slight discoloration and cheap lenses do have some (usually correctable) chromatic aberrations.
Discoloration isn't so common with new lenses, neither are very strong flaring effects when you point them at the sun.

On Pentax's mounts and Sony's E-mount, I'd say you usually get pretty much what you paid for. I quite often buy the more expensive ones.
[There of course are the odd few lenses that may not be such a great deal anyways, and your valuation of the usefulness of the FF lenses on an A6000 may vary.]
PS: On the native lineup of brands other than Sony and Pentax, a lens hood may also be one of the commonly used accessories that is often not included with the lens. Some companies have made ripping you off for that $0.3 to produce piece of plastic part of their business plan because they know it's one of the most useful accessories (you basically never want the light that it shields, and it helps a lot with the physical protection of the lens' front glass at no cost in image quality).

Almost anything with a flash hotshoe - maybe a D3200? [Obviously a tripod mount threading too, but you almost couldn't have found any without that].
You probably want a YN560TX on it to trigger a bunch of YN560 III / IV speedlights or something like that. Reproducible and sufficient light -off camera, too- will be a big deal. Bigger than the camera body, probably.

Yes. The a6000 is really a rather good camera anyways at this point in time.
Consider the 60mm Sigma Art f/2.8 if you want a cheap & very sharp lens for portraits. Pic related ~1:1 crop of bunny. [That lens is a really, really good deal at ~$150, despite being APS-C only, and having center-only PDAF support and no in-lens stabilization.]

You can trivially edit it in in post with pretty much any image editor worth considering - including multiple free open source ones.
One way to do this: Just add a layer, fill it with a single color or a gradient or whatever, blend it in the way you want with your photo, done. Wouldn't get a lens or even a color filter just for that.

PS: You probably also want a remote trigger so you don't always have to run back to the camera, which also helps with some of the vibrations you might get on the tripod if you trigger without delay timer.
In the case of the Nikon and other cameras with this feature, you can use an IR emitter (they cost like $2 if bought in China) as trigger.
If the camera you want doesn't have that, you probably need a sender/receiver pair that hooks up to the mic in / shutter release port, an USB port, the hotshoe, by wlan or bluetooth with your smartphone [...].
Almost any IL camera has some way to be remotely triggered (and almost any has some cheap chinese - manufactured way to do it), though. It's more a suggestion that you might just buy the required accessory right away than one to take care to buy one with remote triggering ability.

What brand of lens adapters do you guys use/like?
Basically I own an a6000. I got a sigma 30mm prime just to start of with.
The problem is despite it being a small camera, It is still to small for me to put in my jacket/jeans pocket. This leaves me with two options.
1) Store it in a bag and take it out when I need it; I have been doing this and it is really starting to piss me of, I also miss photo opportunities by the same I have got it out the case.
2) Have it on a strap, which I find gets in the way and draws attention to me.
I know these sound like trivial problems but I am genuinly regretting my purchase, and instead are considering getting a high quality compact, such as the ricoh.
I do like the sound of the ricoh, but in all honesty, how much of an issue is the dust problem? And am I really going to sacrifice a lot of image quality by switching to the ricoh?

He's just playing ya. Still tho I'd reccomend the ricoh over the Coolpix A, even if it's just for ergonomics. It's an extremely tactile camera, your fingers rest right on the buttons and wheels. If you can try both out you'll probably find one you like the most, but I'd wager that'd be the Ricoh.
The Ricoh is also entering into 'cult camera' phase meaning you'll get some legit resale value. I bought mine when it first came out for $800 Australian buckeroos, and sold it a few days ago for $650. Pretty good if you ask me, considering I put about 15k shutter actuations on it

I started the adapting craze probably five years ago
I can tell you from experience that cheap adpaters fall apart and the good ones don't. One cheap chinese adapter developed an unexplained rattle and looseness that allowed the lens to wiggle (despite being solid metal, yes.) Another $30 USA adapter is slightly looser in mounting, but it was tighter than a normal lens to start with.
This is pretty typical behavior. If you're poor, you can make do with a cheap adapter but expect some kind of wiggle or play to develop sooner or later.

Sony e-mount user and noob here. I've been wanting to upgrade from the kit lens to a prime for some time and right now I've narrowed it down between the Sony 35mm f/1.8 and the Sigma 19mm f2.8. I saw on the Sigma's product page that the 19mm is 35mm equivalent so that's why I'm comparing the two lenses in the first place.
Right now I'm leaning towards the 35mm because it seems a lot more versatile but it's double the price of the 19mm. Would the lenses be able to produce similar results? Generally speaking? 90mm FE macro. Maybe the 85mm Batis.
Oh sure, the glass is pricey, but it also works fine on an A6000, though it is a little front-heavy. Either way, ~135mm equivalent is fine for portraits (especially head&shoulder style), products and architecture.
You could maybe also use the 60mm Sigma Art f/2.8 or 55m Sonnar T* f/1.8 for a 90mm equivalent setup.
Perhaps you should get these medium telephotos first because they usually look better when you can use them, but you'll also want a wider-angle lens (maybe a 35-50mm equivalent?) of your choice. You'll probably have some buildings and people that require it.

Problem with the the wireless is that people say the app is rubbish and drains battery life.

Yeah pretty much. The cloud thing just organizes your photos and uploads them to a site you can access anywhere, but it never forces you to use it (if I remember correctly it's turned off by default).

you can use nearly any lens in the world with the addition of a $15 adapter off ebay.
Make sure the lens has a physical aperture ring, or you will need a more expensive electronic adapter.
the cheapest focal lengths to get you started will be 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 135mm, m42 and k mount will probably be the best ratio of availability and affordability, but you will also find plenty of MD (sony/minolta), FD (Old canon) and F (nikon) stuff, Nikon tends to be a bit more expensive though.

I went throug the Canikon & Sony rebate lists, there's really not a whole lot of particularly good deals. Most entry levels are around $400 to $500 depending on the kit / accessories. This makes me laugh every time. On cheap-ass lenses, the aberrations of the lens at larger apertures often have a greater effect of softening the image than the pixel-level effect of diffraction. I have an older super telephoto that's sharper at f/22 than f/8, or f/4. Actually get out and use your gear sometime.

It's f16 (look further down the exif info), the f4.6 is the lens's widest aperture at that particular focal length.
My thought process was probably something like start at f8 which is the sharpest aperture across the frame (and more than enough DOF for that scene), but to blur out the motion in the waves and get a longer shutter speed I wanted to close the aperture down a bit. f22 has too much diffraction/softness so f16 seemed like a decent balance. And ISO 100 to maximise the EOS M's shitty dynamic range.

Best thing you can do is get em in her hands and see what she likes best. People on here have so much brand loyalty and place such emphasis on negligable differences and often ignore user experience. Ignore anyone who suggest a mirror less camera. They do not have the capacity of of DSLR. The d3200 is perfect for first timers. They allow you to dip your toes in photography. The two kit lens will do you great as they cover a wide range. As a result, you probably have lots to learn and can grow in the camera and learn how the camera works and learn technique without breaking the bank. Go to photo store, try them all out, pick the one you like using most. You cannot go wrong nowadays, they're all exceptional. It's like how cars have a different "feel" when driving, pick the camera you like the "feel" of most. If you really can't decide, go with the Sony, they're definitely top dogs for the mirrorless market and you'll get the most support in terms of things like accessories.

If you're set on sticking with Nikon, save the money and get an older model like a D90, original D7k, D300(s), etc. Hell, you can even get older FF models for really cheap (D3, D700, D600, D800, etc) and that at least opens up new options in terms of photography.

Anybody have experience with the Voigtlander Nokton lenses for m43? I was thinking about picking up the 42.5mm 0.95 for my E-M5 (just like pic related) but I already have the Olympus 45mm 1.8, which I like, so I'm not sure if it's worth it to spend the extra $800.
I shoot mainly portraits and that 0.95 is mighty tempting. I already shoot manual controls and manual focus, so that's not an issue, and I actually prefer aperture rings.

Usual kit lens. One is wide to standard zoom, the other is standard to tele zoom. They are good and light so it is easy for traveling. The telezoom needs f/8-f/16 on the long end, 150-200mm range.
In short, you can make stunning photos with both if you know what you are doing.

I want to make PCB photos, and I need a lens with flatter angles, so any taller parts (like cartridge slots, heatsinks, etc) do not appear "angled" from the center of the image.
As I understand, higher focal length gives flatter viewing angles. My current 18-55m lens, at 55mm, is not good enough, so I need something more.
I'm looking at the 17-85mm IS USM and the 18-135mm IS, as two possible improvements, they are both just about in my budget if I get them used.
The PCBs I want to take photos of are around 28 x 25cm in size. I have a Canon EOS with an APS-C sensor (1.6x conversion factor). My stand goes up 146cm at most.
What is the maximum focal length I can use, at those dimensions?
