The exposure is your fault. Remember that the moon is lit by the sun, and you don't need to use a long exposure or a large aperture, or you'll get that blown effect. As to the size of the moon and the detail on it, that's partly up to you and partly up to your gear. If you can't afford long, sharp lenses, try experimenting with things like super resolution.

You guise are way too kind. My pitchers always suck and are universally panned on /pee/. I just got lucky with that one I think. I'm happy to say that it's precisely what I was going for, and almost no editing went into it at all (think I bumped the 'sposure up about one stop or so but that's it).
Here's the other photo (snapschitt) I got at the time - all my friends think THIS one is the best, but I prefer the one through the trees.

it was a long exposure and fire doesn't fare too well in that. also, the highlights are blown (the fire and moon) because I was trying to squeeze as much detail out of the smoke and leaves as possible. it's quite possible this would have been better as an HDR shot

Today I've been working on learning layers in photoshop and have been playing around with merging two exposures together; one of the clouds with the moon blown out and and the second is of the moon properly exposed. For this first try I stacked three layers with a duplicate of the background cloud layer placed in front of the moon exposure with opacity adjusted (to still portray it as being behind the clouds) and hit it with the burn and blur tools but its still a little too sharp and the shading is a bit off. It was a bit fun for my first shot. Still need to pull back on the processing a bit but I did enjoy the colors that the low clouds caught from the streetlights and blues from the the high clouds.

It looks like the moon was cut and pasted in front of the clouds. You might want to blend some of the cloud exposure back in so it looks like it's behind them.
