So, /p/, beginner here,

Question: What do you do about bad weather?

I'm not talking about rain or stormy weather; Those can make for really interesting moods.
I'm talking about flat gray skies with no light colouring to give depth to your shot.
Is it even possible to make use of such weather?

I try to shoot a lot, and bring my camera with me as often as I can, but I find that when the skies are gray I sometimes won't even bother hauling the big thing with me, as I'm certain I won't get anything good.

Tips and personal experience wanted.

flat grey skies are best skies.

Giant softbox, yes please.

noob.

Well, yes?

Give me examples on what you shoot in such weather, Anon. I want to learn to utilize it for something.

Greens are usually a lot greener in that cloudy weather than they would be when it's sunny
>>
I'm glad you made this thread, OP, I'm yet to shoot my first roll in non-summer/sunny/contrasty weather, I'm under the impression without resorting to the contrast slider everything'll be extremely dull and uniform.
>>
>>2703509
most of the shots here are in soft light >>2703114

You can tell the ones that aren't as they either have hard edged shadows or are inside.
>>
>>2703553
They look a bit dull, to be honest.
Particularly the shot with the trash cans. That exact look is what I'd like to avoid.
>>
Another noob here. Similar question. What about when it's just harsh lighting without a sky in the cloud. I live in Phoenix where it's sunny 300 days out of the year. Besides sunrise and sunset how do you deal with that?
>>
>>2703588
Exactly the same way, use the light you have to it's advantage create shapes from shadows, don't be afraid of pure white or pure black if it's being used as a framing mechanism.

It certainly depends on what you're going to shoot.

Overcast days are excellent for shooting people and small scale stuff. I shoot all of my headshots either in the shade or on overcast days, and use smaller lights to key and fill.

For landscapes, you might be out of luck if you want to get away from the dull, low contrast look. Try shooting around sunset and sunrise, where light will hopefully be doing something at least a little interesting.

Shoot colourful stuff in soft light, edit a bit to make the colours pop. Personally I prefer shooting in cloudy weather to sunny, full stop.

I'm amateur and maybe it's nothing awesome but i enjoy those gray sad days from time to time. It really helps to build this sad dirty eastern europe atmosphere.

I think it's all about utilizing those sad and unpleasant lighting conditions for your advantage.

Agreed, wouldn't give the same vibe without the gloomy skies.
