Don't listen to above shitfags OP
Problem with the most landscape photographers is very same as with the guys shooting nude models. Snapping something beautiful does not make for a good photo. You can get visually pleasing photo liked by 99% of people who see it, but in most cases there is little value added from your side as a photographer.
Same goes for architecture photography - you are not adding anything if you just snap from the very same angle the architect designed it to look beautiful
So to answer your question, the only way to make a good landscape photo is to look for something which isn't there, like curious shapes, colors, weird shadows - things that look like something else and communicate subtle messages on top of a visually pleasing landscape.
Now, this is extremely hard. This is exactly the reason why most common advise you hear is to study art to become good at photography. Photography is very deceiving, what's most important is to learn to look behind visually pleasing images and reach for some artistic depth (which most of the snaps out there lack completely)
>>2695990
This photo is interesting, because initially you see nothing but clouds, and only second later realize that bottom part is actually a land. Colors are warm and set the mood. Problem is that there is no composition, and visually this is not something that captures the eye.
Which is another side of a coin: you cannot get too artsy without actually getting visual attention using some interesting subject or solid composition
Still better than shooting mountains for you grandma to like on Instagram

The thing about photography is that it largely serves to capture something, to document, to create a visual record. It isnt a "problem" unless you are aiming to be as artistic as possible. But you can never assume that all photographers aim to be artists. Photography can be art, it can also be other things and still hold value. I think that a lot of photographers get passionate about documenting and exploring things that they find interesting, but not necessarily about creating art. There is no problem with this. And a photograph IS good if it is executed properly (light, composition, post processing etc.) It doesn't have to take an eccentric perspective to be good.

You go up to rmnp a lot? I'm definitely going to hike Chasm Lake on Sunday or Monday morning. It's a beast of a hike and I think the last time I went there was with naturebro.
What do I look for in a landscape photo? I'm looking for the moment, the light, the fog, the conditions. I'm looking for a clear and concise composition that brings the viewer into the image. That's why I often stay just a little below eye level and not in your face on the ground like many photographers. I find it easier to get lost in the image that way. I'm looking for the adventure, the connection with nature and the time away from people. I'm looking for new places or to see familiar places in new light. Really, it just makes me happy.

And I totally agree with you there. I love to have a little depth on a picture, and shooting from about knee to waist height really does that. Help you convey the scale of a massive mountain without completely burying the frame into the ground.

>>2698614
It's a visual record, a documentation.
To put it another way: a painting of a house is a painting of a house. A photograph of a house is a house. See the difference?
When photography was invented, it was marked as the death of painting. It wasn't literally the end of artistic painting, it just meant that you didn't need to paint something to keep a visual record because photography did it in a fraction of the time.
>>2698614
>But I ask you, what is photography when it isn't "art"?
This is like asking "when are words not used in storytelling?"
Photography isn't art unless there is a lot of planning involved. It documents an instant in time. Ansel Adams planned how his final print would look before even taking a camera to go take the picture.
90% of what you see on /p/ and most websites and magazines are just documenting. Not art.
>>2695990
>what do you look for in a landscape photo
Beyond technical things like good light, tonal quality, naturally sound composition — more subjective things like mood, which kind of lords over the other stuff. I try to take landscapes that are aesthetically pleasing at least, and might invoke emotion at best.
>>2698065
This is the stuff I find hard to enjoy when it comes to landscape. Heavy-handed (note: I'm saying too much, just distracting) processing and obvious exploitation of lens distortion. To each his own, I guess.
>>2698993
oops, my bad... *not saying too much, just distracting*
>>2698955
>90% of what you see on /p/ and most websites and magazines are just documenting.
But documenting is exactly was Robert Frank, Dorthea Lange and Walker Evans (to name a few) set out to do, and their photographs are considered art as any other. What's the difference?
>>2698996
They weren't documenting their shoes, or their desk, or their one friend sitting on a sofa playing SNES. /p/ just wants to play with its camera, not actually take photos.
Also, in the age of the internet, and the nearly complete coverage of the world with cameras, we've left the age of documentation, and entered the age of emotion and expression.

What are you going on about? That picture was taken with a digital camera.
Motion.
A lot of your landscapes are pretty mountain vistas and puffy clouds.......go somewhere different, somewhere less traveled (ironically enough this was shot on the side of State Road 17 in Florida but it worked) do something different. Watch your scene for potential compositions, walk around, get dirty.

>>2700759
Yes, and that's why it looks a bit shit, and why you can't tell if it's overexposed or just right, and why you had to intentionally blow it out.
If you'd used negative colour film, you could have given the foreground the very same exposure, and the highlights in the sky would have retained their detail.
Which is not to say that you couldn't have done a better job than you did with a more laborious digital technique (GND, bracketing for HDR), just that film is a better tool for super contrasty scenes generally.
Go to the Alex thread, get learned.
