Good Morning, /p/

I've set aside some time to scan and edit so I'm going to start a thread. It's been a while and I don't remember where I left off so I'm sorry if there's any reposts in here.

This was from backpacking in the Snowy Range of Wyoming. Found this spot with an unnamed peak and unnamed pond a few years ago but this time had better skies. I think this is Velvia 50

This was from an epic hike one August morning. The forecast called for clouds but during the entire hike in the dark it was clear skies and full moon. Then right at sunrise the moon fell down to this gap between the peaks and clouds started to move in right over them. Couldn't have asked for more. I wanted to keep detail in the moon so I used Ektar.

I'm not that happy with these, either foreground or background draw that much attention that I think the whole to be almost too much.

Thanks anon. My goal for that sunrise was to be near the waterfall at the outlet of the lake, but it turns out that in the early 1900s this lake was actually increased in size by man-made projects before the wilderness acts. So it turns out sometimes the level of lake is too low for the waterfall to exist. I was a bit surprised by that. So I had to climb up the massive boulders to the side of the lake, but I liked the way the bright granite reflected the sunrise hues so I went with it.

I appreciate the feedback. I see you have a taste for the more simple images which is great. I think I was chasing some much more busy landscapes the last few months and I need to get back to a little more simplicity in my shots.

That said, I really missed the traveling camera this fall. Last year it was such a blast to use that thing and they were honestly some of my personal favorites just based on how fun the thing was. Still had a blast living out of my van for more than a week and traveling the state. This one is Ektar.

Glad to hear it! As far as composition goes, I like to think that less is more though these don't all apply to that rule compared to a lot of past work.

Even though these are busy you can see I like to frame things with natural surroundings like in these two
>>2695762
>>2695703

I also love the natural V shape of mountain valleys (or the trees that line the image and make it look like a valley) and use that to my advantage often like in the one I'm posting now or this one
>>2695706

As far as books, I don't have any specific recommendations but I do recommend following photographers you admire and paying attention to what they do. The other thing is to get yourself out there as much as possible and things will come to you. I also have an eBook on photographing the plains where I cover some tips on composition on my website. I plan on expanding that book a bit this winter when things slow down and I'll be giving all previous purchasers a free copy of the revised one.

This image is from last year, just an example for anon.

Yes I'm pretty strict, wouldn't offer depth and angle across some disturbing things. Currently I practice to add more depth and angle to images myself, which mostly reduces the quality of my photography. Just an expression of how much harder it is to take busy scenes.
Your stuff is awesome!

There's a few others I'm not digging as much but when all of your stuff is good, it's easy to get nitpicky and hyper critical.
Your colour processing is spot on as always.
>>2695703
Could have done with a slightly lower perspective or some fall, there's a little too much sky and the reflection in the pool is leaving the frame a bit.
>>2695706
Orange looks a little overcooked to me, and the water not being total glass is a little distracting.
>>2695719
Did you use a polariser for this? I'd like to be able to see whatever that is under the water a bit better.
>>2695740
This is a little underexposed in the foreground, Velvia 100 purple in evidence. Shadows cutting the mountain in half, cloud shadowing that little bit on top, ratty tree blurred by wind. Meh all round.
>>2695750
I really want to love this, but it would be so much better if you could be 6 feet taller to take it and get the line of the stream uninterrupted.
>>2695762
I find this one really disorienting. There's no reference for the horizon, so the ground is sloping one way, the trees another, the lake shore another, and the mountain fades away into the clouds.
I really love the black and gold and the light wrapping around the trunks in the bottom right though...
>>2695768

>>2695776

>>
hell yes, Alex thread! I've only been on /p/ a few times this year but I hit it right today.

>>2695719
I really love this one. It would look so good as a huge print. Your framing of that underwater pier or boat ramp is perfect.

>>2695727
This is really great too, you're really killing these pano shots. Has it been a challenge finding the right places for your new pano camera?

>>2695750
What an incredible location. Where is this?

>>2695774
I remember seeing this one on Facebook, and it's an incredible photo. But for once the color feels a little off to me, in the yellow and greens. Not that I'm saying it should be realistic to life, your gift at pulling out the strength of film colors is one of your great strengths, but it just feels off here.

>>2695774
> I also have an eBook on photographing the plains where I cover some tips on composition on my website. I plan on expanding that book a bit this winter when things slow down and I'll be giving all previous purchasers a free copy of the revised one.
I bought Alex's book, and it's very well written with a lot of useful information. I knew it'd have valuable information just because Alex's a talented and experienced photographer, but he's actually a good writer as well, so it's presented very well.

I do have one constructive criticism of the book though, since you are going to be revising it. When you designed the layout, it's clear you wanted it to be as readable as possible on a computer, which makes sense since you released it as a pdf e-book to make it affordable for people.

However the downside, is that it comes across looking more like a powerpoint presentation, another format designed for computer screen readability, which makes the book feel a little "cheap". It might seem counter-intuitive, but I think if the layout was more like real coffee table book, with smaller text, it would just feel more expensive and more like a "real" book, even if that impacted the readability a little.
>>
Also, I'd been meaning to write to you to to say that the print you sent to replace the one that got damaged is beautiful in person. My wife really loves it. I was waiting to show you it on the wall but I honestly haven't had either time or energy to frame it yet.
>>
>>2695888
Good to get some feedback, there's no where quite like /p/ to get some honest thoughts.

>>2695921
Hey man! I really appreciate the feedback on the eBook and I'm glad you found it useful. I think I know what you mean, as it seems like each page could use a little more text by making it smaller. I formatted it to be the same shape as a horizontal ipad screen and to look decent on a desktop. I'll take that into consideration when revising and I've also started on an outline for an ebook about absolutely everything I know about shooting film in this age. That one might get a bit thick.

>Has it been a challenge finding the right places for your new pano camera?
I think so many places that I visit have been begging for the pano format so I've really enjoyed using it. The setup is insanely quick compared to 4x5 so those times where light is really changing fast and I happen to have the pano camera it really saves the day.

>What an incredible location. Where is this?
It's up a valley near Crested Butte, Colorado called the Oh-Be-Joyful Valley. The place is just spectacular and very remote.

Interesting about the colors seeming off on that one. Those early autumn grasses to have an odd color with green/yellow and reddish tips and I think Ektar just create a little bit of a color that's not always true to life. I think I enjoy it as is, and I brighten the file just a tad for printing too. It's been my most popular print this last year at shows and I use a 48x60" massive framed print of it to get people into my booth.

I'm glad your new print came in good shape! I can't believe what the post office did to your other one, it's like they practically jammed a pole through it.

Thanks, fellas

This aspen forest was almost spooky in the fog. It's a bit unusual to see aspens like this. Might crop just a tad, not sure yet. The viewfinder on this camera is so bizarre you always have to assume some cropping afterwards, but it doesn't really matter because the film is so damn huge. Velvia 50.

Oh and on another note, I have a question for you home developers out there. I was recently given this Jobo developer by an older gentleman which is completely awesome. It had some fuse blowing issues at first but I managed to get all that figured out and it works! Just ran my first few sheets and rolls through it yesterday.

So I had been doing all my c41 with the 3 bath powder kits in an inversion tank to get all the Ektar shots you see here, but now I want to give some e6 a try at home since I've got this guy. The problem I'm having is an economical solution for chemicals. I know the 3-bath kits aren't recommended by most people but to be honest it's been working great for me with c41. People seem a little more down on those kits for e6, but has anyone here tried it? Other than that I'm looking at a several hundred dollar chemical kit to get started if I go with the traditional 6 bath. Being as I'm not a full on lab, I only shoot about 300 sheets a year split 50/50 between slides and color negatives. I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out capacities and whatnot on liquid chemicals and lifespan. I've managed to get c41 to under $1 a sheet with the powder kits but I don't want to be spending hundreds on chemicals that will expire before I get to use them. Even the 3 bath e6 kits will come out to almost $2 a sheet. My lab in Denver does them for $3 so that's not a huge savings. Any thoughts from our e6 friends out there?

Oh shit, this is gorgeous! Any chance of a 16:9 cropped upload for wallpaper use? or a high res one we can crop ourselves?

Any chance you can post this in higher resolution? It's probably my favorite shot of yours, ever. Would make a great double monitor wallpaper.

God dammit Alex

Accept my FB friend request already so I can stalk you while I'm on the road.

We've been all over the country lately but for now we are west. Spent some time in Utah and Wyoming around 80.

Also fuck Wyoming wind.

Bike guy here. Which lab in Denver do you use, I've been meaning to find a good e6 lab around here. I'm not used to having different options.

Alaska sounds great, I don't have enough vacation time right now though.....

I generally shy away from posting larger resolutions since it always ends up somewhere illegitimate with no credit after it goes here. Maybe I'll include those in my next wallpaper pack.

I thought we were friends? But then I've also not been using personal facebook at all for at least 6 months. Ain't no one got time for that shit. How's the trucking life? And yes driving on I80 in Wyoming is always shit. My family lives in Ogden and I always seem to get blasted by wind every time I make that drive.

>>2696085
I was using Reed Photo but they stopped slides this year. I found Digigraphics in Fort Collins does them so I used them then they started sharing a lab with The Slide Printer in Denver. They only offer special deals when you mail it to them, I think they are trying to get customers from around the country to ship to them so they can get the most out of their chemicals. Their turnaround time is super quick and they still do e6 runs every weekday. Here's the mail order link: http://digi-graphics.com/forms/e6_mail_order/e6_mailform_page.html

Yeah I'm definitely wanting to do an Alaska ride but time away from work is always the challenge most the time. That's why I went part time at my job three years ago and I'm planning on quitting all together in late spring 2016 if all goes well. Still, the show schedules will be tight in the summer with a show most weekends, but if I see a two week gap forming in my schedule I may have to plan a trip. I'm always down for a shorter ride too, and I love biking out to the Pawnee Grasslands in early May to get the summer started. It's a very pleasant 45-50 miles (or further if desired) from my place along with some nice dirt road biking. If you wanna try something let me know! It's hard to find people willing to camp on a bike.

Yep, I was visiting some family in the West Springfield PA area (very rural, about 1 mile from Ohio and 5 miles from the lake) and one of my uncles has a tiny rental cabin on the lake shore. This is a concrete erosion structure that juts out into the lake near that cabin. It's sort of near Conneaut Ohio but just barely into PA.

Glad to hear it. So far that is my absolute top favorite image for this year.

Yeah I used a 3 stop reverse GND filter. Kind of a bitch to use on a camera with an external viewfinder but I've been doing my best with guesses.

Sure, it's not all that recent but here's one. I don't do that much b&w these days, I seem to keep seeing color while I'm out there. The b&w's never look quite right on a computer though because I actually wet print these. All I do for the scans is a quick levels adjustment so they can go online.

Have you ever thought about doing an actual print book?

I realize the economics can be really iffy if you'd go the self-publishing route without a publisher, but your photos really would deserve a good print treatment.

>>2696493
Oh yes I've definitely thought about it. It's like a dream to have a beautiful book, but yes the economics cannot support it with my current following. If I could have a larger fan base that could support with a couple hundred pre-sales then yes it would make sense to get the minimum order of a thousands books. For now I'm just selling prints and increasing my following.

>>
>>2696617
And just to get some form of time frame, you said you work part-time and take about ~300 sheets/year worth of images.

But how often do you go on these hiking / photographing trips of yours? And how many images do you typically take in a day/session?
>>
>>2696497

I don't understand what kind of point you're trying to make.

>>2695762

I'm new here so I don't really recognize you, but I know this is Bear Lake in RMNP. Alex?
>>
>>2696623
Yeah it's a route I would possibly try when I have more of a plan.

>>2696628
Yeah that was a rough estimate of sheets, might be a little more now that I think about it but probably not that much more. I work Wed through Friday and then get 4 day weekends typically. During the summer and fall I'm going nonstop, either a photo trip for 3 or 4 days one weekend and a art show the next. I would say I spent about 50 nights this year not at home on some sort of photo camping trip. Sometimes I just go up to the mountains for an early morning sunrise and head home, sometimes I'm going somewhere a days drive away and spend a week out there. I lost any sort of paid vacation when I went part time, but I've still taken 4 full weeks off this year aside from the 4 day weekends. If I'm out for a sunrise I'll shoot anywhere from 0-4 sheets. Sometimes in the fall I feel like I'll even do as many as 8 a day if it's just awesome all day long. But some days I don't shoot anything and I just explore and find new spots for better light.

>>2696640
Yep, sure is Bear Lake.
>>
>>2696374

Are these wide ones just crops of regular 4x5? Have you ever tried cutting up a roll of 120 and sticking it in the film holder? I'm curious to know if that would work. It would probably need some sort of bracket, like a piece of card stock with tabs cut in it to keep it from rolling up.
>>
>>2698048
>>2698048
Based Alex shots Fuji GX617 in addition to LF.
Also I think he's got some kind of Mamiya 6x7 kit too these days.
Also, LF shooters for the most part dont bother with ghetto cardboard hacks.
You can get rollfilm backs for all sorts of view cameras.
>>
>>2698048
I used to crop 4x5 sheets for my panos but I ended up getting a Fuji 6x17 this year which has been awesome. It's nice to actually have a panoramic viewfinder and the setup is quick for those times with rapidly changing light. If I were backpacking and only had the 4x5 with me then I would just crop. I've always enjoyed just cropping from a full sheet because I can choose the pano composition more carefully afterwards.
>>
>>2698054
>Also, LF shooters for the most part dont bother with ghetto cardboard hacks.
I thought LF was the bastion of ghetto cardboard hacks. After all the cameras are mostly origami with some wood and metal bits tacked on.
>>2698058
Cool, I always wanted to try one of those. I haven't visited this site in a while and I'm glad to see you're still shooting.
>>
>>2698498
Hah yes LF can be the king of ghetto hacks. Most of my filter holders have be hacked to fit on with rubber bands so I can use cheaper P sized filters. Most of my gear is more ghetto than nice to be honest. And yep, I'm still out there all the time.
>>

Yeah that stuff has not been happening nearly as often as you can tell from this thread. I still look for it when I'm out there like these two unedited recent ones, but I've been taking travels elsewhere more often these days and finding it harder to get out into the local landscape quite as much. It seems that if I'm around town I end up busying myself with other photo-related stuff and I've been more focused on creating images when I'm hours away from home. I know I need to get back to it, there was a very special feeling about looking for compositions among the bleak industry-dotted plains.

I have so much room to talk seeing as you are still much more actively shooting landscapes than me, but here we go.

>>2695703
All the technical aspects are spot on but the scene just doesn't do anything for me. I've never been a fan of reflections unless theirs a better reason than it's there. The reflection isn't showing me anything new or more interesting than what is already in the photo and nothing is gained by repeating the shape here either.

>>2695706
This is getting closer to being a more interesting reflection. The faint rocks under the water mimicking the shapes and tones of the clouds is interesting but they are not apparent enough for me to say perfect. I like the moment's pause that is required to break apart exactly what I'm seeing but it's too subtle. Moving closer to the unexpected can help really set these landscapes apart from say what Lik, Rodney Lough, and Fatali are already doing.

>>2695710
I like this one from the aesthetic point of view.

>>2695712
I'd prefer this sans windmill and road and with more sky. The trail and windmill are not unique enough to warrant drawing attention away from the drama of the sky.

>>2695714
Tighten the crop on the sides. The center is interesting but the left is dull and the right has unpleasant tones in the ferns.

>>2695715
I feel like a higher point of view would have gone miles here. Still decent

>>2695719
yeah okay this is the best of the bunch so far by far. Try graduating tones darker on the top and bottom and adding slightly more contrast to the bottom.

>>2695726
Tree just doesn't add anything for me

>>2695727
everyone seems to take these in Oregon, they're irresistible.

>>2695731
Longer shutter to the let the grass go further and more drama in the sky could really push this one. Also thing about getting rid of the clutter on the right

>>2695740
composition feels rushed like you were out of position when the light hit

I always appreciate the honest thoughts, bro. I feel like you break the images down well into compositional blocks taking everything into account from shapes to tones to textures and I typically see what you mean most of the time. I also stay pretty true to nature and there's the fact that sometimes you just can't be in that certain perfect spot or remove that object from the frame. But I agree that making those difficult things happen is what sets the good apart from the best. I'm just keeping at it every day with an open mind and hoping to always learn more.

>>2700482

>>
>>2701141
Yeah it's pretty good for not being multicoated. It's the only reason I've kept that one where all the rest of the ones I have are multicoated. It was stopped down to either f22 or f32 and I used some front tilt. That pentagon would have been huge if the lens were more open.

Forum retards are all 60yo dinosaurs with too much time and money who will use any excuse to do something in the most complex and expensive way imaginable. They will bicker endlessly about the "rendering characteristics" of triplets vs tessars vs planars and yet would never be able to tell you what you shot with if you showed them a competently taken photo.
They will 10 times out of 10 recommend a 6 bath setup.
The Jobo is going to make sure the temps and times are schmick, and that's the biggest variable out there.
But hey, they're your livelihood, if you're that concerned just shoot 2 frames at a time, and lab dev one, home dev the other, then compare and contrast.
>also I need to buy some colour kits now that my local lab is closed, and I want you to do my legwork
>>
>>2701889
That's exactly what I can gather from those forum guys. I've had perfectly good luck with the 3 bath c41 kits. Some people will talk about how the color is perfect, but I feel that would be a bigger concern in studio or technical situations. Landscapes are always changing and every sunrise has a different tone to it so small variations would not be critical. Also these days you just use photoshop to correct anyways.

I see freestyle has $30 Arista kits and $60 Tetanol kits that have the same capacity. I think I'll try the $30 kit because at $60 it's hardly saving me over lab fees to develop. I'd like to say I'll send one to the lab and do one myself, but I doubt that will ever happen. That's why all those guys online still argue with no solid evidence.
>>
When do I get to attend a gallery opening or permanent exhibit?
>>
>>2701917
I've looked into a gallery space but currently it doesn't make much financial sense. I mean I could easily get into other galleries but I don't want to spend tens of thousands on inventory to have a corner in a building where no one actually represents me very well. If I do a gallery it's going to be just me with my name on the building. So currently the traveling gallery makes the most sense because of the relatively low booth fees, low time investment (not having to man it 7 days a week like a real gallery), and it gets me in front of a different crowd every week that has the intention of buying art.
>>
>>2701911
And again, I think the capacity of these kits is a bit understated. I think it's the bleach that can be replenished to keep you going a lot longer? Not sure about that though.
And you're always gipped on claimed developer usage for sheet film. Rotary processors are much more economical than paterson tanks anyhow. I'm sure you'll work it out anyway.
>>
>>2701931
Oh yeah I always go at least 50% over the capacity on my c41 kits unless it's been a month when I haven't shot as much and the developer is getting close to two months old. I don't think you can replenish any of the three bath kits which is why some people bash them. I need to get another sheet film holder for this jobo thing and I'll order one of the Arista kits at the same time.

I like your Provia shots a lot. The way you compose your shots seems to favor Provia the most.
>>
>>2705161
Glad to hear it. I've always liked Provia, but for some reason that I can't explain I like it more on that pano camera than ever before. It's like the film is perfectly matched with that lens, center filter, and format. I don't even think that's possible but I seem to be able to get surprising dynamic range and colors out of Provia with that thing.
>>
>>2695706
The colors in this make my eyes bleed. Way too orange. I like most of your stuff but I really hate this one.
>>
>>2705172
That's a shame because those peaks really do light up in wild colors. I can see how the full front light makes them lose their texture and appear as a full on orange smear. I shot from this area a year ago with a very similar sunrise, but had a composition looking north which provided the peaks with side light and texture. This time I wanted to see the setting moon between the peaks so I shot facing west. You would expect the sun to slowly fall down the peaks from top to bottom over a few minutes, but the way the valley is shaped these ones blow up in crazy colors within seconds as the sun rises over the horizon.
>>
Hey man. I'm the guy who initially got you into home developing.

Do the 3-bath E-6. It's easy and it works. You'll have to dial in the times, it's a bit more malleable than C-41 since you've got the 1st developer and then color developer. Note that Fuji film has a recommended first dev length as 7:15, while Kodak is 6:15.

I don't post here anymore, I just happened to pop by for the first time in months (and I don't really get why you bother posting here).
>>
>>2705198
Oh cool, yeah I'm going to mix up the chemicals once I have enough film to develop. I wasn't aware of the different developing times for Fuji and Kodak, I always thought that e6 would be the same for all. That's good to know. Luckily (and also sadly) I haven't gotten my hands on any Kodak slide film in years so I'll likely just be doing Fuji slides.

Thanks for stopping by. And let's face it, no one really knows why they're here.

Yeah I know what you mean. I really enjoyed that stuff as well, but in the last year there's been a huge downturn in new drilling and wells since the oil prices are at rock bottom. I live in one of those few communities where some people actually bitch about low gas prices.

So many of the storage yards where there were thousands of frac tanks are now just empty dirt lots or farmers fields, though of course that could be documented as well and I've been playing around with the idea of some of those areas. There's also a huge storage yard where about 30 idle drilling rigs are fenced in behind razor wire just waiting for a rise in prices. I need a helicopter for a good view of that place, it looks incredible.

So don't you worry, that stuff is still in the back of my head I've just been preoccupied with other stuff lately.

>I haven't gotten my hands on any Kodak slide film in years so I'll likely just be doing Fuji slides.
Several years ago, you pointed on on here (or maybe elsewhere?) that Kodak was discontinuing Ektachrome. Because of that, I bought up some and still have two boxes of E100G in my fridge. I shot a little when I first got it, but then I realized that I didn't want to waste it while I was still learning film.
>>
>>2705601
>>2706318
It was a shame to see that film go shortly after I started loving it, but I decided not to hoard a bunch of it. I figured that several boxes of it wouldn't be enough anyway as it's not enough to shoot a long term project with it or develop a particular style. If there wasn't going to be a constant supply of it then oh well, I just let it slip away. I had a bit of a different reaction when Velvia was discontinued in sheets because I had already been using it for years. Now I'm almost out of it and I will just cope with shooting only Provia for slides. In some ways I will welcome it because it will make film choice easier and it's certainly a good film as well. And yeah, I know you can still get Velvia from Japan but I can't justify the prices.

Velvia 100 is still available in the states in 4x5 at B&H.

How do I into slides? I'm used to color negatives where I can overexpose everything on purpose for dat density. As I understand it, everything needs to fit in about 5-6 stops of latitude, otherwise I need a grad ND? What are some tips you could give on Provia 100 and Velvia 50?
>>
>>2708855
Yep, the latitude is very narrow with slide film so if you plan on doing grand scenic images with sky and ground during golden hour you're likely going to want some GND filters. The one I use most is a two stop soft edge filter. Make sure not to overexpose anything by more than a stop or so, and try to use it for scenes where there isn't an insane amount of contrast.

I also wrote a blog post with all sorts of info about various film types here: http://www.alexburkephoto.com/2013/02/25/color-film-choices-for-landscapes/

Not really something I've thought about and I've certainly used it in extremely cold conditions, with this image being about the coldest I can think of. I mean it will always have some blue cast on shaded snow, and I think most of the blue is because the contrast is extreme and I exposed to keep the highlights in control, leaving much of the snow and sky less exposed than "normal." So I'm not sure I'd say that Velvia necessarily gets blue in the cold.

Will do! I post the schedule every year on my website, currently you can just see the previous events because I don't know what's out there next year until applications come back over the next few months. Maybe one day I'll even try a show out east. But probably not Jersey I'm not gonna lie.

And yes, they are fantastic on face-mounted acrylic. I've done several that way but damn they took forever to sell compared to my float mounted and laminated prints so I'm hesitant to continue keeping those in my inventory especially considering the extremely high cost. I think the high-gloss of the acrylic is a challenge at outdoor shows because you can see a ton of reflections on the surface.
>>
>>2708921
>Maybe one day I'll even try a show out east.
Really hoping you do that. I think stuff like yours would sell well out here since it's not as common.
>>
>>2709306
>>2708921
It depends. At places that really cater to nouveau art, these won't sell because they aren't abstract or extremely conceptual works. Alex, your oil stuff is probably the best for that kind of crowd, though it doesn't really give a narrative that would appeal to that crowd. This landscape work is more what sells to hotels, hospitals, banks, etc., which is fine (and I love landscapes and shoot them myself) but one has to understand the "art" market vs. the "decor" market, and nothing here breaks from the traditions and typical scenes that everyone shoots out there. I appreciate the LF aspect of it, because I shoot LF myself, but most of the people viewing the work in a gallery setting don't care.
>>
>>2709699
Yes and that's very much the difference with the traveling art shows. I've begun to learn the clientele that shops these festivals and they are not at all the art gallery customer. When I do these shows I'm dealing with average American consumers with an average understanding of art. They want to buy things that look pretty in their home or images that speak to them. Many want to buy images from a place that they have been to as well. The oil images do not sell well at all in this setting, but my landscapes of mountains and the plains do quite well. Welcoming landscapes, strong colors, simple and clear compositions, and a good presentation that they can envision in their home is what these buyers are looking for.

In tourist towns it's likely that these shows will have about 100 different vendors, and it's not uncommon to see 12-15 photographers. I have many customers say that they see something different in my work which is good, but I'm sure other photographers get the same comments. Many of these photographers are shit tier (HDR trucks and gas stations, etc) and almost all the rest are icon hunters with only shots of the Grand Canyon, the Tetons, and Mesa Arch. Also some are just wildlife as well, with a full range from awful to pretty good.

I also would have expected these crowds to be cheap but that's not necessarily the case. I've found some towns where customers are likely to spend only $50-$100 tops, but others where they don't have trouble dropping well over $1000 on an framed image. Either show can work out so long as there's the crowd to support it, and which towns have more money often surprises me. Some places you can't sell a damn thing, some do great. I'm still trying to figure out my way in that market but it's going well to continue with the images I have and just keep enjoying the life that I am as I create new images that are fun to me.
>>
>>2708915

God dammit fuck you Alex you piece of shit. This is legit maybe my favorite picture I've ever seen and now I hate basically every picture I've ever taken.

>>2709763
I want to say it was 1/60th at f8 on Velvia 50. The blowing snow really caught the rays of light which made the contrast a little more even, though it was still a rather insanely contrasty scene.

And here's one from the first batch of home developed e6 film that I've done. 3 bath Arista kit worked like a charm and should cut developing down to about $1 a sheet.

Does anyone know if slides should drip pink as they dry? The kit advised 5 minutes of rinsing so that's what I did in the Jobo. Then I put them in a bath of distilled water and photo-flo for a minute and hung to dry. I noticed they were dripping pink colored water as they dried. Don't bother Googling "slide film dripping pink"... you just get porn.

This is Velvia 50.

I was really excited for this image when you first posted the behind-the-scenes on instagram, and it's amazing to see it pay off a few weeks later.

I think the color cast is a little too warm in your photo and you lose some of the impact when everything's orange. I humbly, respectfully submit this interpretation.

Lol, this is embarrassing to admit, but I forgot to turn off f.lux before I edited that. It's way bluer than I had intended. This is a two-second fix, but it's closer to what I had envisioned.

And I get that sunset makes everything warm, but one of your signature looks (if I may say so) is maintaining that beautiful vibrancy and color constancy in the shadows even during sunset.

this one is pretty cool. why do they bend, age, weight?
>>
>>2716331
It's typically from erosion as they grow. The ground slides out from under them.
>>
>>2716291
need more of this. desperately.
>>
>>2716331

Soil slump. It compresses and slides down hill, which tips the aspens over slowly. They are super good at compensating and pointing upright, so they bend.
>>
>>2714174
>Don't lie, you spanked it a little after you went to look at the aspens.

Hey Alex, how many shots do you tend to take of any one scene? Film is scarce where I'm from so I try to not shoot duplicates, but I feel this doesn't help me take good photos (being a shitty photographer doesn't help either)
>>
>>2716288
This is incredible, it looks like an oil painting
>>
>>2716703
I'll take anywhere from zero to maybe four shots. If it's not going to be great I quite often don't shoot any film, but if the sunrise is really changing rapidly I may shoot off several sheets. I'm not really bracketing because I just expose very carefully, but sometimes you never know when a sunrise or sunset will be at its best moment so I'll have to take several.

>>2716704
Glad to hear it. That was a multiple exposure of both the peak and its reflection in the ice.
>>
>>2716288
Saw this guy on FB. Really rad shot. Probably one of the most interesting things I've seen from you in a while. I know shit like this probably doesn't pay the bills, but damn it's a great shot.
>>
>>2717563
I'm glad you like it, I'm hoping to try something similar more this winter as I find more perfectly frozen lakes. Honestly quite surprised I was able to line it up that perfectly since I had to turn to camera upside down for the second exposure. That was with the Mamiya but I'll try more with the 4x5, the grid on the ground glass should help with the multiple exposure comps.

As far as paying the bills go, a lot of customers ask me for photos of "such and such mountain" so possibly something unique like that might stand out.

Alex, you would be the perfect candidate for this job. Please apply.
>>
>>2717801

do it alex, do not chicken shit on this. i might start being a nosy little shit with this but i think youre an underachiever that pulls himself down. how do i know? because youre here with us.

go up and touch the stars, my man. do not hesitate, youve got what it takes. good luck.
>>
>>2716288
Is this a double exposure? or pointed at the water/ice and the mountain is a reflection?
>>
>>2717801
>>2717827
>>2717838
Hah I've gotten so many messages about this today. I'm definitely looking into and revising my resume tonight, might as well apply despite the very vague job description that sounds like it would mostly be photographing historic buildings. Hopefully it's not in Washington DC either, I lived in that area for a year and it was a dump.

>>2717844
Multiple exposure, one pointed up at the mountain and the other with the camera turned upside down and pointed at the reflection on the ice.
>>
>>2717801
>>2717827
>>2717838
If you actually read the job description, it sounds like they want black & white photography of architectural and engineering sites and objects.

Not at all what Alex likes and is good at. Plus it's only a year job. Plus it would stop all the momentum Alex has been slowly building. Getting big takes time and patience.

>i think youre an underachiever that pulls himself down. how do i know? because youre here with us.
That's like saying Obama is an underachiever because 50% of his fellow citizens are dumb as shit.
>>
>>2717850
I think it sounds like a poor fit for you, but if you're going to apply, send some of your oil industry photos as well as your landscapes to better fit their brief.
>>
>>2717856
You don't even apply with photos at all. Just a resume and you fill out a questionnaire.
>>
>>2717853
>Getting big takes time and patience.

and networking with the right people, dumbo. no amount of hardwork alone has pushed anyone to the top. you know this.

>That's like saying Obama is an underachiever because 50% of his fellow citizens are dumb as shit.
>using obama as an example. ever.
ew.

were talking about art and talent here, not about puppet politicians installed by political parties. you seem to be part of that 50% you talk though, keep it up.
>>
>>2717865
>can't admit Obama isn't an underachiever
>thinks he's not exactly the 50% idiots I'm talking about

keep talking it's priceless

Your editing is fantastic, your tones are splended. If you could share some of your process, I'd be hugely appreciative!

Thanks! I have shared much of this before and am currently working on a large body of material to be released hopefully by spring. In the meantime, go through my past blog posts to find some info about editing film scans and luminosity masks.

yeah, this is literally not fit for Alex at all. I mean, other than the LF thing. But he doesn't shoot much b&w and I haven't seen any architecture work.

Full disclosure: I applied myself. I shoot a ton of 4x5 and 8x10 b&w work and have actually done large-scale documentary projects for historical preservation.

By the way, there was no place (or requirement) for sending actual images/portfolios. Typical gov't job description.

>>2717853
Where the fuck did you read it's only "for one year?"
>>
>>2718058
Thank you! Very much appreciated.
>>
>>2712411
don't rinse your slides in water/photoflo. The stabilizer is the final step. If you wash with water after the stab you lose all the preserving benefits of the stab.
>>
>>2718082
Hmm this kit doesn't come with a stabilizer which is rather odd, so I used photoflo and distilled water so it at least wouldn't have water spots.
>>
>>2718082
>>2718086
However, I'm digging through forums and it kinda sounds like E6 and C41 stabilizers are pretty much the same thing, so I suppose I could just use the stabilizer I have from my c41 kits for this E6 stuff. Sound legit to anyone?
>>
>>2718090
Yes they are the same thing.

If it didn't come in the package, somebody messed up. My 5L kits of C-41 and E-6 come with the same bottle of stab in each.

However, I didn't use it for a long time, just photoflo, and never had the pink you describe. Also all my images look perfect. I do use it now, just in case, but I was lazy for a couple of years when I first started color developing.
>>
>>2718092
Good to know. I used the Arista kit which everyone online is saying does not come with a stabilizer. The tetenol kits do, however. Which 5L kits are you using for E6, and how is the shelf life of stuff that is opened yet unmixed? As in, if I just want to mix up one liter I'm sure i can just do the math and use a portion of each bottle, but will the opened partial bottles go bad within x amount of time?

Go get em tiger.
>>
>>2718163
Holy shit. With a salary like that, you could get a sweet setup, and I'm sure that you'd have a considerable expense account.
>>
>>2718101
I use the Tetenal. I mix up 2.5L batches. I put the unmixed solution in new smaller bottles - they will oxidize with so much air in the original bottles, especially the bleach. You can do 1L batches of course - personally I'd consider mixing everything from the concentrate and storing the full 1L bottles all in a cool dry space and use them over time. The mixed chemicals still last months, if you take care of them.
>>
>>2718341
Awesome, I ended up ordering that 5l kit this morning. I saw the instruction pdf and it says opened concentrates last 24 weeks which is pretty good. Do you do one shot processing? Given the required amount of chemicals per run I'll only be able to get cost down to about $1.80 a sheet which isn't that great, but I was thinking if I did a lot of sheets in one day I could reuse once and cut that cost in half. I noticed the tetenal instructions do not recommend or say anything about reuse.
>>
>>2718351
I don't do one-shot, I use a 2.5L batch for 2-3 months, with no ill effects. Once I start feeling like it's getting close to exhaustion, I dump it. I buy fresh chems every 6-8 months or so.
>>
>>2718411
That's great. So developing could easily get down to 50 cents a sheet which would be stellar. Thanks for your help, sorry about the millions of questions.
