How do I use classic exposure steps on a Zenit 11? Like -3, -2, -1, -2/3, -1/3, +-0, +1/3, +2/3 and so on.
I always used this on other cameras to test film in a specific camera, but the Zenit doesn't have dial. Is there a way to work around this?
>>
>>2692738
I'm probably wrong but can't you just meter your shot, shoot for what would be say -3, and just write it down with your shot number and settings?
>>
>>2692735
I bought an Elan 7 because I'm invested in the EF lineup, wanted to shoot film, and can't really afford to get another full setup.

I fucking hate that film cameras are associated with hipster culture. Polaroid is hipster af, though.

Here's a snapshit I took while out shooting with my Hasselblad, today.

Sorry, I'm on my phone.
>>
>>269my first real camera was a Nikon FM10. It was cheap on ebay and I have a hard on for any technology that is "outdated" but still good. To be honest I used film because I thought no one else was really using it, because I didn't know shit about photography then. The very first time I posted on this board (probably 4 years ago now) I made my own thread with some nice but uninteresting photos and said "taken on an all manual film camera" like I thought that meant something. Obviously I got shit on about it. But using all manual really made me learn about camera settings and how light works in photography.

I use film now because I like the way it looks. I shoot medium format because it's a less expensive route to higher resolution and better creative control, but also because I only get 10 shots on 6x7 and it forces me to really think about what I do, so more chances to learn.

>>2692755
I use a polaroid (land camera) because it's an instant talking point with people when I'm out shooting, and I like taking peoples pictures and just handing it to them.

Houghton-Butcher Ensign.
6x9 folder, using 120 film.
Has an "f8 Symmetrical Rectimat".
Has a fucked focusing scale, so my only luck so far has been at about f/32, or when my background has happened to make an ok shat as well. Need to calibrate the distances on the front standard.
It's pretty awful, but it works.

In the days this kind of thing was an everyday thing for an optician. Now it is near impossible to find someone who can do the tuning properly. And when it is tuned up, you shoot a few rolls and it has to be tuned again.
Get a proper MF SLR or a Mamiya 6. An RB 67 or a Pentax 6x7 is your best option for MF film, even the cheapest considering the costs of all the tunings you will in a year with your camera.

Oh, I've got a real MF cam too.
I was just posting my hipster bullshit.
I don't plan to "adjust" anything, I'll just make a tracing paper groundglass, set up a light bulb in the dark and write down the real distances it's in best focus for each of the notches it has for the front standard. Infinity is not such a biggie, because you almost never want to shoot a subject at infinity wide open anyway, and stopping down will give you the DOF you need as long as you're not focused at less than 5 metres.

I live on the eastern fringe of an e.european country, so going full LOMO is more of a necessity than an option for me, stingy cheapskate bastard-wise, traditional 'tography's as dead and forgotten here as anywhere, so everyone and their mother have old gear either already binned or cluttering up some attic/basement, antiques markets are flooded with 0,3 EUR/USD Smenas, Zenits and FEDs galore. Since all gear is useless without someone talented/skilled using it, don't really see a point in cashing out on western system SLRs so working up my autistic theoretical gearfag collection from the eastern stuff.

Got a Praktica MTL5, metal curtain shutter german tank, a Zenit 12XP for the obligatory Helios and nostalgia factor, Smena 8M inherited from parents, a FED 5 for the rangefinder experience and a few other less known cameras and a couple M42 lenses to cover the basic focals. All amassed over one winter for a ridiculous pittance, currently in the process of getting a roll through each camera to check its shutter times' correctness, lens' capabilities etc. Dunno if Nth pic of well-known cameras lined up is necessary, dont expect anyone to share my collecting bug.

M42 to Nikon is stupid.
M42 lenses are meant to be used with cameras that don't have a retarded flange distance. That optical element just screws up your image. It's one hell of a way to make the image of a good quality lens look like a massive pile of shit.
If you use Nikon you are pretty much limited to old Nikon glass. No Carl Zeiss Jena for you, my friend.

I have that camera in silver. same lens, too. Your strap looks nicer though. Mine came with a shitty plastic strap that's cracking from all the 40 year old hairy man sweat left over from the 70's.Also have one of these, but it doesn't always advance film properly, so you get some accidental double exposures.

Hi /p/

My dad used to be an avid photographer in the 70s and 80s. His camera (Pentax SV) is still at our home, sitting unused for a long time. Pic related, it is from a Pentax discussion forum.

A few years ago I purchased a roll of film just to test if the camera still works. It did, but the pictures turned out either randomly under/overexposed although the lighting conditions, shutter speed and aperture were the same. There was also uniform coloured "glow" present in most pictures.

Would it still be worth it to have it serviced/repaired? Any idea how much (approximately) would it cost?
>>
>>2693156
The aperture may be sticky.
This can cause it to not be stopped all the way down by the time the shot is taken.
Or the shutter might be broken, or again, just sticky, meaning it might randomly hang open a fraction longer some times.
Those things are both pretty easy to test without wasting film though.
A "uniform coloured glow" might be a light leak or a developing problem, impossible to tell what you mean without seeing it.

Last I have my trusty Bronica - the love of my life basically. I've shot Hassy's on location, Mamiya's hooked up to Phase One backs professionally in studios, Contax 645's, Pentax 645AFD's, and for whatever reason I always come back to this Bronica. may have to take it to a specialist if you're worried. If you did the conversion yourself, you got ask yourself, is the camera that valuable to begin with? would you mind putting it back on the shelf if you did fuck it up? I would go ahead and do it if theres enough tutorials/information to do so.

Try practising by converting a cheap brownie camera, something less desirable and then plan to convert your camera otherwise its a useless dust collector that cannot be enjoyed

Focus to infinity is important, especially when the adapter and extra flange distance takes away most of your range. Not even hyperfocal is in reach on most lenses.

Picked this up from the same guy for $10. Light meter works fine, a couple dents but they're just cosmetic and light seal foam is also good on this one, too.

Zenit ET with 58mm Helios was my first and only camera for more than 10 years. It wasn't a choice but a necessity since I was a poorfag from Poorland.

I shot the shittiest expired Fomapan and used knockoff Rodinal because it was most economical.

Fuck your shit OP.

I just bought a f100 from keh, sticky back but I'm going to try to fix it with rubbing alcohol and mineral oil. That sound good?

Also I can't get the dioptre knob to move at all, wtf. And it randomly stops working, I've been shooting it a bit without film. Is it because it thinks it's at the end of the roll or something?
>>

That's the only fix that I know of. Mine doesn't have that issue, so I don't know for sure.
>I can't get the dioptre knob to move at all
You need to pull it outwards before twisting it.
>it randomly stops working
Mine is the same. It'll work fine with film in it.

Ektar isn't worth it if you have a lab that does the E-6 process. Slide film is better in several ways, and I've found it easier to expose than Ektar, as paradoxal as that is. Ektar has a terrible tendency for cold, bland tones and blue cast, makes everything look dead, and is almost impossible to completely fix in post.

Portra is probably the best all-rounder film. I'd say Fuji Superia Premium, but it's Japanese market only. Of the Kodak line, Gold and Ultramax are great when you're on a budget, Portra for when you really need the performance. Ektar only if you can't shoot slide film for some reason.

Fuji, in the time-honored Japanese tradition, reserves its best stuff for the Japanese market only. Fuji Superia Premium is much like Portra 400, but costs less. Most importantly it lacks the heavy color casts of Super Xtra. Fuji Superia Venus 800 is a great high speed film, surprisingly low grain especially in daylight conditions which completely blow up stuff like Natura 1600. Too bad these aren't for gaijins. Superia Xtra is inferior to Kodak Gold, mostly because of the color casts that exaggerate either red or blue. Pro 400H is weird, exposing it like any 400 ISO film just blows it all the way to hell. I don't really like it enough to try and figure it out. Natura 1600 is super mushy in daylight as you might expect, but it's great for late night street work.

No experience on Agfa yet. I have a bunch of their old stuff in the freezer though, just need the occasion.

Allegro, chuju.

Monitor auctions (probably ebay these days, there's hardly any good offers left on allegro).

Buy expired rolls for $1 a piece, or bulk 17m and 30m rolls (if expired and reduced in price it's even better).

Load your own rolls from the bulk in a darkroom, keep the leader almost all the way in.

Cock the shutter before loading your camera, also load the camera in a darkroom too to save the 1 or 2 extra frames.

Buy Fomadon R09, it's Foma's equivalent to Rodinal and you can use it in 1:100 or 1:200 dilutions. I didn't shoot too much (4 rolls per month at most), but a single bottle (0.33l iirc) lasted me nearly 10 years (the concentrate keeps literally forever too).

Get a cheap bottle of Fomafix and of course reuse, 500ml of fixer solution would fix a tank with 2 films at least 6 times (a typical tank needs about 650-700ml to cover two roll when it's upright, so you just need to put it sideways and keep turning it in your hands for 7-8 minutes to get even fixing, it actually helps the process because it's being agitated, but watch out for leaks). Store in a Grolsch or any other swing-top bottle, keep note of a date of making the working solution and a number of uses.

Don't rinse with running water if you pay for water, instead fill the tank, agitate (turn upside down) about 30 times, drain, and repeat about 30 times.

Splurge on a Paterson tank with teflon coated spools, this is the only element you shouldn't be stingy about. The clunky leaky piece of shit Krokus tank will make you want to kill yourself faster than you can say "Zjawisko Schwarzschilda".

Be lucky enough to have access to a pro film scanner so you can cut the printing expenses, though I guess darkroom printing is great fun on its own.

Such was life of a NEET film photog in Poorland.

Suggestions for a 35mm SLR?
I live in East Europoor so I already have all the Zeniths and currently using pic related. It's dying though. Is there anything besides OM that's worth checking out?
>>
>>2696546

They're really all the same. Just get something that uses the lenses you may already have.
>>
>>2696546
Just get a fucking Nikon F100 and be done with it.

There's only 2 semi-acceptable reasons to get anything else:
>You want an F5 for extreme action sports photography
>You want a camera such as the one you posted to impress your hipster friends
>>
>>2696574
>or if you want to use superior MF lenses and focus them accurately
>or even if you want to focus your AF lenses accurately wide open
>or if you don't want to carry spare batteries with you, or worry about them dying
>or if you want a small, light camera
>or if you want M.Up
>or if you want metered long exposures
>or if you want to get 38 frames to a roll of 36, like every manual camera does
>or if you want a camera chicks will dig
>>
>>2696574

eh no, I get old SLR's because I'm out shooting all day and don't want to worry about batteries. Newer SLR's have shit electronics built into them along with more plastic as well.
>>

>>
>>2696624
>>2696609
I've changed the batteries in my F100 once, and I've shot about 50 rolls with it.
If loaded correctly, you get 38/9 frames per roll.

I've got nothin' else. It's the best all-round 35mm camera, imo.
>>
For an all-manual camera, what Nikons worth are considering other than F, F2?
>>
>>2696631
The FM and FM2 are decent. The F is a truly inspiring camera to use, though.
>>
>>2696624
You spend more in film/dev than the cost of a couple of spare batteries would cost, which gives far more shooting ability than the same weight in film. For instance, 328 exposures over the last five days (around 80 were long exposures), and I still have 1/4 battery left. I have two more spares too. I just charge batteries once a month.

Not hating on you for shooting film, just saying that's a stupid reason to shoot film.
>>
>>2696635
Film newbs think batteries will be a pain in the ass - in the same way they are with digital. Not the case.
>>
Prospective Hasselblad owner here. How do you guys manage filters on the system? The logical thing to do would seem to be to standardize to Bay 60, but it's impossible to find anything in that size. You could, of course, just use step-up rings, but then you can't really use a hood. How do you manage?
>>
>>2696690
Shoot in studio where you can control everything.

Not being snarky, but hassys are best in studio. There are better field options.
>>
>>2696693
Yeah, that's exactly what I intend to do. I still would like to use filters with the system. There's no substitute for B/W contrast filters.
>>
>>2696694
Then you don't need a hood.
That's what snoots and flags are for.

Also, you can gel lighting instead of using a filter.
>>
>>2696699
Gel lighting is a different effect than straight-up contrast filters.
>>
>>2696713
Nope, try again.

It's all about color mixing. If you gel all of your light yellow, it works exactly like a yellow filter. It doesn't matter if the light passes through the yellow filter before or after it bounces off the subject. You just have to make sure to do ALL of the light sources (including windows), or entirely blow out other light sources.
>>
>>2696718
Yeah, exactly. In practice, this is ridiculously difficult. Filters could save a whole bunch of trouble. Or maybe I just want to use a Softar or Proxar or something. Point is—is there any decent way to approach filters with Hassie?
>>
>>2696732
No, it's really not ridiculously difficult. At minimum you need blackout curtains, which you need anyway (or are you going to refuse to shoot on days when the sunlight is shitty) and light gels. Bam. Done.

Is drawing a curtain or two and putting some gels on more than one filter? Yeah, but it's not "ridiculously difficult" by any stretch of the imagination. It also has the advantage of selectively adding contrast versus doing the entire frame.

Eh, I've got a T3 with a non-working meter and 50/1.4, 28/3.5 and 135/3.5.
It's a fucking tank, and the shutter feel is really nice.
The 28 is nothing special, but good enough stopped down, and the 50 is surprisingly sharp at 1.4, but the focus alignment might be a hair off. Haven't used the 135 because it's a 135, and also has a sticky aperture.

The 28mm is actually pretty good. Don't let the speed and vintage fool you. Not only is it great on film but if you look up people who use it on digital it's surprising what it can produce. What I hate is the slow maximum aperture for focusing. It's hell but at least it's 28mm and slow so not much is out of focus.

It's not amazing or crazy sharp but for it's size and focal length I think it's very special and produces some decent results.

Is it any good in what regard? For taking pictures? Like any other camera. To hit people over the head with? Probably not much, it's a flat tin with some leather glued to it.

It's a standard 6x9 120 film folder, the bellows might have lightleaks given the age, the lack of DOF indication or distance measuring makes framing shots at best hit and miss, few shutter speeds limit your flexibility in terms of lighting conditions, the triplet anastigmat lens slapped on there prolly isn't coated so you'll get vicious flaring on your shots from any spot lightsources (i.eg. the sun). What else do you want to know?
>>

I know guys. I just don't have the time or space to develop. Small apartment, grad school, photo work, and choir director/organist at a local Episcopal church results in no time... I really want to develop my own stuff. Maybe after grad school is over.
>>
>>2698624
>I just don't have the time or space to develop
Yes you have. Fuck you.
You really go though all the trouble of shooting BW film and don't develop it yourself? BW film has always and will always be for home development, the labs don't even want your BW shit, hence the high price for such a simple task.

If you develop at home you have complete control over your exposure and gradation, can look for a fitting developer and get the results you wanted when taking the picture.
The lab guy doesn't care about your pictures, you'll get average everything.

Do you have the time to edit your digital pictures yourself, or do you just let Photoshop handle it with auto-contrast? I don't really think so, so take yourself time one sunday afternoon and develop your shit, it feels great and you have control over your pictures. It's also a lot cheaper and your lab won't hate you.
>>
>>2698643

Problem is I normally shoot color, that's a whole lot more involved. So the occasional roll of black and white, I toss in the mail with the multiple rolls of color, and off they go (I usually wait till I have several rolls to send).

Also, you must have missed where I said I work as choir director at a church. My Sunday's (and Saturdays) are completely full with rehearsals in the morning, afternoon, and morning and evening services.

I know it probably feels great to develop one's own pictures. As far as a lab hating me, why would that be? I'm paying them, it's keeping them employed, so why would they hate me?

I'm glad you enjoy shooting B/W and then developing yourself, but it's not for everyone.
>>
>>2698657
>Problem is I normally shoot color
>occasional roll of black and white,
Accepted, but don't say you don't have time or space.

>As far as a lab hating me, why would that be?
I don't know one lab guy that enjoys developing BW, they don't feel like that's what they are there for, since you could have easily developed it at home.
Looking at the price range for BW developing you can easily guess that they don't want to do it, so they raise the price.
>>
>>2698666

>Looking at the price range for BW developing you can easily guess that they don't want to do it, so they raise the price.

Huh. The lab I send to doesn't increase the price for B/W, only for E-6 (which makes sense). That's why I hadn't realized that they hated it. Either way, I'm happy with the results from them so I'm not complaining.

I learned on my dads FS-1 for a few years. I loved it. Had the 50mm f1.7, 28mm f3.5, and 35mm f2.8.

Loved it. Moved to a nikon N80 for auto focus and I already had a D7100
>>
>>2698921
Love that. It goes everywhere with me. It's small, sharp, and reliable (dropped it in a snow drift, worked fine)

>two Pentacon Six.
Why?
How often do you overlap frames?
How off are your shutter speeds?
How "the claw" is your right hand?
Why don't you like yourself?
>>
>>2699121
>Why?
got one first. then i needed more lenses, so i ebayed for a pair of lenses and they came with a body attached. bang, two pentacon bodies.

>How often do you overlap frames?
first camera didnt ovelap but had worrysome variable frame spacing. 2nd works perfect.

>How off are your shutter speeds?
never had such problems with either one of them.

>How "the claw" is your right hand?
yes ergonomics are not their best feature. not the most pita camera to use, but not good either.

>Why don't you like yourself?
i like myself, bro. its just that one thing led to another. also, i won an international convocatory with pentacon 6 number 2, so theres emotional attachment to it too.

Those are all probably better 28mm lenses but then again those are all either more modern or larger format lenses. There are probably better 28mm SLR lenses of the same vintage but not by much.

>>2696876
>>2696877
The 50mm f1.4 is better because it's sharper and has a more tame out of focus area (even better on the later 50mm f1.4 because it has more aperture blades). I always want to get rid of my 57mm F1.4(s, I have many) but the rendering, not only in the out of focus area, is so good. It screams "old film lens". The 50mm f1.4 is just a good lens that performs almost like modern lens. The 57mm f1.4 rendering is just so good and I think it's sharp enough. Every time I take pictures with it I'm surprised with how nice the pictures look.

I have so many lenses that I feel like I have too many normal lenses for the same system. The 50mm f1.4 is a good all around lens, the 50mm f1.7 is super sharp stopped down, small and light, the 57mm f1.4 looks more like classic film than any other lens I have and I even use it as a portrait lens. I have even gotten nice pictures from the 52mm f1.8.

Whenever I think about the lenses I want to keep I always want to get rid of the 57mm but when I look at the images I want to keep it.

I though the day would never come when people on /p/ would be talking about Konica SLRs. Only in my dreams.

Pic is from my newest 57mm that came with a camera. I have like 3 or 4 of them and that's after I got rid of 2. I think I will keep one even though I have too many lenses.

The Super D is my current favorite camera. I love its minimalist boxy look, the lenses are great and it's built like a tank. My Zenit-E feels fragile in comparison.

The folder is a bit rubbish desu (though the Schneider-Kreuznach lens is alright), but it's my only medium format camera, so I haven't sold it yet.

The cost of getting film developed is part of what drove me to home develop. You can mail it out to a lab like thedarkroom.com or something if you don't mind waiting days or weeks, but I like being able to develop the same day I finish a roll.

There are hundreds of youtube tutorials on developing b&w and color film. b&w developing is cheap and hard to fuck up. As long as you're scanning and not developing your own prints, you don't need a darkroom.

If it's a yashica be prepared to clean the taking lens, they're known for shutterspray oil buildup. Not that hard though, it's just unscrewing the lens (front and back). Make sure you look up a a guide for your model, don't know if they're all the same. Also get the tools you need, it will make the job a lot easier.

When shooting make sure the seeing lens and taking lens are parallel to the subject you're focusing on. It seems elementary, but I learned the hard way :')

I've actually had them take a look at it right after I got it. I got a new curtain put in, full interior work over, as well as the mirror lock up option, the brighter viewfinder, and a new mirror to boot.

It's really great, working with a stock one was pretty temperamental so I figured I'd send it in and get it looked over. That and the curtain came torn so that needed immediate attention.

I think it's in good working condition. I'll go back in and play with it some more tomorrow and make sure. Also I realized once I left it was the 4K model and was wondering if the black sprocket that holds the exposed film while it was in the camera was supposed to slip off like the original 4. Do you know by chance?

Also I'm not sure what lens it is. I think it MIGHT be the Industar 50mm 2.0 since the focal length seemed about there and the maximum aperature was in fact 2.0 (I didn't pay too much attention to the lens).

I'm really happy I found something like that, especially being where I live.

a 50mm lens either 1.4 or 1.8. Is the 1.8 really worth almost double though?
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

>AE-1 to start
Great camera
>Kiron 28-70mm
Try to avoid zoom lenses, their quality is always subpar compared to primes. Zooming can be convenient I know, but try the 50 first and see how often you actually need another lens, then ask yourself what focal length you need and get another prime .. most likely a 35mm
>either 1.4 or 1.8
The only advantage I see is the better low light capabilities, other than that the 1.8 is a great lens with sufficient aperture. You could buy another lens for the money the 1.4 will set you back .. most likely a 35mm
Do you shoot in low light often? If so, could you fix it with a tripod? Could a higher ISO film fix it? Is (+0,5) exposure really worth twice the price for you? You know best what you shoot, get a lens that fits that, not the one some nerds on the internet think gives better pictures in a studio.

Last one.

I liked that because of how cheap the camera was and because it was all mechanical i wasn't afraid to take it anywhere. Middle of a river? into the ocean? lets go.
