Architecture is a challenging genre. I'm always incredibly frustrated.

Very easy to get ok results. But the patience, care, and attention to detail required to make really good ones is punishing.

Spiral staircase for the instant, easy win.

The prints of this negative were the most fun I've ever had in the darkroom - pulling detail from the very bottom and maintaining texture in the highlights was a course in dodge/burn from one image.

Of course, this is up-side down. Not a super-clever trick, of course.

Underscores the challenge - when doing architectural photography you kind of need to decide if your goal is to present the art in a wholly pictorial way. To capture the essense of the work accurately and clearly... or are you trying to impose a personal point of view?

I find that images that fall in between these don't succeed as much.

Example of a largely technical, sterile approach.

Waiting for the perfect light. Getting the people and distracting elements out of the frame. Controlling perspective (which nobody cares about anyhow. Movements have become a relic)

Then painstakingly removing all the the physical flaws, trash, clutter, marks, broken tiles, scuffs, etc.

If the image is about the structure in its environment - all of those things are like pimples and flyaway hairs on models. They distract.

Why shouldn't buildings get the beauty treatment in editing as well?

This is one of those really boring images that comes to life a bit as you stand and look at it in print. The breaks in symmetry kind of drive that.

Cheers for the thoughts. I've attempted a bit of architecture photography but I think I need to really apply myself (and explore more) to get good .
I guess I prefer the more abstract approach - otherwise it does feel as though I'm simply documenting somebody else's work without any sort of interpretation on my part.

There a number of things to addres. There really isn't a fantastic photo to be had there. A few: 1. The sky is blah and blown out. Get closer and elimiate as much as you can. 2. Perspective is off - see the leftward tilt in the background? 3. If you want to give the sense of "endless repetition" of that arch motif, don't show the end of it (background) crop so you don't see that wall in the back.

This is the confluence of two rivers underneath Bradford in the UK. Above, there's a City hall of sorts built in the Victorian era.

These arches were built to hold it up and then covered over. They're about 200m from the nearest daylight source and you have to walk / stoop down weird tunnels - a real fuck on to get to but interesting to see.

Fair shout actually, it was lit with portable fluoros off to the right and another obscured in the distance, was pretty constrained and 100% dark down there

Just less sky, more wall. There's too much. When you have a really boring sky, you have to be aware of it, and shoot around it. There's more to it than that, but it's a first step to be aware of that.

So, now eliminate things that don't support that thesis.

Well, the wall at the end says "Ok, the arches stop here" - that hurts your thesis. So get rid of it.

We all polish a lot of turds as we dive into photography. Hopefully some of these ideas can help future excursions.

Meanwhile - people starting in photography and trying their hand at architecture should understand and be able to manipulate perspective. This starts with being able to make things straight and the bit of seeing and awareness of the lines in a scene.

That beam slanting down and to the right does nothing good at all for the image. Nothing. Neither does the periphery. Especially given that the rest of the image was pretty carefully squared.

When you start to fuck around and play with things - it's best to be deliberate rather than coming from some smug "Straight lines are so beneath my art" BS

I live in a tropical country wherein it is either no clouds (direct sunlight) or overcast (raining or it might rain). Do you mean by a dull sky is that it is overcast?

Oh now I get it. I haven't come across of that before so thanks a lot. Your advice has surely helped me.

Anyhow here's another photo I took at the same time as the photos I posted here. Here I believe I wanted to highlight the repetition of the ceiling. But yeah I think it looks bland and I can't find a proper angle. Is it because I am taking a picture of it wrong? Or is it the lighting?
