Who here's been in a confrontation before over a shot they took?

I was shooting in Times Square today when a woman and her daughter walked into my frame just as I shot.

Click click click (fucking A6000 shutter).

She turns around and her eyes dart from me to her daughter (who was about 15 as I later found out, but could have easily passed for 18)

Then she screams "You pervert!" and comes charging at me. Everyone turns around to see what's going on and I try to explain she walked into my frame and I did not intentionally take a photo of her or her daughter.

She goes on and on about how that's bullshit and she "knows my type" (I guess she was calling me a thug) that prey on girls.

I offer to delete the picture, and do so in front of her.

She says she's still calling the cops before her daughter drags her away embarrassed.

Worst part is the crowd started jeering in "You fucking sicko," and "You are disgusting!" without even knowing what's going on.

As someone who generally doesn't film people, but rather buildings, cars and nature...I didn't know how to react...

How would you react in such a situation /p/? Anyone had anything similar happen?

I'd probably have tried to cordially explain this to her as you did.

But once she starts screaming shit, I tell her to fuck off, go home and watch her idiotic Hollywood crime fantasies on TV.

Sorry to hear that happened to you OP.

Kind of agree with this, if nothing else because she doesn't deserve to get her way through bullying. Fuck her.

A few weeks ago I was on the beach taking photos of boats and stuff and some woman had a hissy fit about me to her friend "that man over there's going round taking photos of people" "i'm keeping an eye on him" and a couple of other things.

I wasn't taking photos of people, I didn't even take my lens cap off around people to try and prevent any accusations, but people just get upset when they see a man by himself with what they see as a "professional" camera. People are getting a little OTT with this pedo stuff.

I shoot a lot where homeless and crazy people hang out. My plan if somebody tries to confront me is to pretend to be deaf. It's foolproof. Nobody will beat up a deaf guy exploring what senses he has left.

> with this pedo stuff
Long lenses on DSLR cause rape on even adult women, they just can't feel safe around you, anon.

If this happens more often, I think you should have a fake beard and thick horn glasses with you, just in case you overhead another group and want to go talk to them.
>>
>>2681515
I should learn sign language and try this.
>>
Never had that happen to me, but if I lived in a country where it's completely legal to take pictures of people on the street like the US, I'd probably tell them to fuck off
>>

i'd just dismiss her and move on. she calls the cops, and the cops will tell her to fuck off. she posts your image on the internet, you sue for defamation. either way, zero fucks given. dont delete your photos. while file sequence numbers and metadata dont mean much as evidence, it could help.

the same cannot be said in france. pictures of buildings and landscapes are ok, pictures of people as the subject of interest require a model release. legally anyways. if you look like a tourist and not a full body pro camera toting idiot, nobody gives a shit in a city like paris.

also, dont dress, act, or look like an internet dweeb.

Just so you'll feel better after all the raging, the cops arrived, and the woman immediately claimed the guy was assaulting her. Unfortunately she didn't account for him filming the whole thing, and after taking a look at the video the cops arrested her and she got charged for assault instead. If he hadn't shot the video though, well, I'm sure you know how it goes if it's his word against hers. On the beach. And he has a flying camera.

Carry bullshit "Documentary Photographer" business cards with you. If people get in your shit, just hand them a card and explain that you are documenting something that pertains to them; their clothes/fashion, their food/coffee, phones being used in public, etc.

Never tell them that you snapshit randoms on the street, because that sounds even more creepy. Never delete a picture unless they specifically request it, because you look like you're guilty if you do.

Carry a printed copy of the first amendment, and any of the several court cases about public photography, so you can shoe them that nothing you're doing is illegal, and that calling police is just going to be a waste of time, but make sure you tell them that they can still call the police if they want to.

Also, never let them look at or scroll through your pictures. They don't have an expectation of privacy in public, but the contents of one's phone, camera, Nintendo ds, etc does. Cops need warrants to search that stuff, so have them call the cops, who need to get a warrant.

oddly enough had my first altercation last week after shooting street for 8 years

I saw this man petting his dog on the head while the dog kinda drooped his head down, like he was sad for something he did

anyway, i moved in and just as I shot, this guy's daughter walked into my frame on purpose

she goes, "you can't take photos of people without permission, its against the law"

I said, "yes I can," took a side step and took it anyway.

she threw a fucking fit and told her dad I was taking pictures of her and that i had been following them for the last 3 blocks (neither of which was true)

cops were called, they (including her blue whale of a mom) actually flagged them down. the cops told them to eat shit because its a public area, didn't even ask to look at my camera. had a nice conversation with the younger cop about the rx100m4

tldr; stand your ground next time you pussy

This is why I shoot street with a retro camera. Shooting with an a6000 modern camera will freak women because they think it has x-ray vision or some other hidden tech.

Pic related is what I shoot street. Girls complement it as well. :3

but jokes on them, joey boots (guy filming) has been openly homosexual for more than a decade at the time of that incident.

also,

>be in the middle of times square dressed in crotch clinging shorts

if she were my daughter, and she really wanted the shoot, i would not suggest that as the location. more importantly, i'd suggest a different set of pants before crying about who was filming my kid.
>>
>>2682076
Isn't is illegal to film the crotch of an underage? Also if he's gay why is he filming her crotch? shit don't add up mac.
>>
>>2682224
Well obviously that would be illegal, but I'm pretty sure he is gay and has been for a long time. He was one of the earliest video makers on to troll with his camera. He mostly did shit for the reactions so I'd guess, this was another one. And perhaps he didn't know she was underage until the mom told him.
His main point was that he's in public and films whatever he wants to film as long as he's not touching/harming the person.
>>
>>2682331
Do different laws apply to gay people?
>>
>>2682332

Yes. For example, until recently, gay people couldn't marry each other.
>>
>>2682343
Technically incorrect.
It wasn't illegal for gay people to marry, but it was illegal for people of any sexual orientation to marry other people of the same sex.
Your sexual identity does not exempt you from certain laws.
>>
>>2681667

> in public
> posing
> very tight clothing

and he's the pervert? kek
>>
>>2682331

Why would filming or taking a picture of a underage girl/boy crotch be illegal? as tight as the clothing is, it is still clothing and therefor covering the genital area.

If it were illegal for a picture to be taken of someone dressed like that, it would also be illegal for them to go out in public dressed like that.
>>
lol based muhniggerpixels
>>
>>2683037
Nudity != sexualization
>>
>>2683058

sexualization doesn't equal cp.

there's tons of situations where young under age girls are sexualized by what they dress or their actions and none of those are considered illegal.

see dance moms on tlc for strong evidence of this.

There are, and were, states where gay sex is literally a crime. But I guess by your definition, it's also illegal for straight people to have gay sex.
>>
>>2683703
>but i guess by your deginition, its also illegal for straight people to have gay sex
... it is though. its not illegal to BE gay. it was a crime for a man to peg another mans asshole.
>>
im not really worried about the confrontation, but i am worried about someone breaking my camera. it was cheap as hell, but im poor as hell, plus it will ruin the roll of film inside it.
>>
>>2681486
Meh. Its usually middle aged busybody ladies anyway who just threaten to call the cops, and I tell them they should and keep on shooting. No fucks given.

I do carry a small can of bear spray and a .380 just in case, but usually its not a problem, and when it is you can usually get the to go away without escalating it.
There is a reason companies make concealed carry holster pockets in camera bags though.

Originally thought it would be for protection from teen thugs trying to mug me late at night in the city, but they actually never bother me. Its actually only come in handy with entitled rich white assholes trying to take my camera.
Why the fuck do some people have the crazy idea that any picture with them possibly in it legally belongs to them, along with the camera, so they can just take my camera from me by force if they think they might have been in the giant crowd I just took a picture of?
Where there hell do people get these ideas?

I had something weird like this happen

>shooting really cool weird building that's a power plant or some shit
>security guard walks out and tells me to leave

Happens to people all the time, not just me. One of the old regulars here actually wound up in jail because some drunk fuck thought his girlfriend might have gotten in one pic of a festival crowd, and so snatched his camera and smashed it on the ground. Wound up in jail for the fight that ensued afterward.

I have never lost a camera to anyone, but people sure have tried to take it, or threaten me over it. One lady broke my glasses because she was inside a restaurant when we took a pic of the -outside- of the building, and she thought she might be have gotten in the pic through the front window, and punched me when neither I nor my assistant would turn over all of our film at her demand, since she 'owned' that picture.

Lots of entitled fucks think they own the rights to any image they are in. Try shooting -ANY- event and you will find at least one asshole trying to take or steal your shit because they think the rights belong to them. One girl that did concerts lost two cameras, broken jaw, and the orbital bone in her face crushed when someone in the crowd pulled her off the stage due to that. She only lost the DSLR due to the fall. Some idiot grabbed and smashed the other one just to get the film out of it.

So in short, fuck off. it happens.

A lot of these laws ( I don't think there are many left after the supreme court decision, but this is still fairly recent) banned oral and anal sex for HOMOSEXUAL couples only, though a some applied to heterosexual couples, too.

As a matte of fact, some schools reference this old struck down legislation. For example, Texas:

"homosexual conduct is not an acceptable lifestyle and is a criminal offense under Section 21.06, Penal Code"

With close encounters you need a good front and be street smart to some extent. In countries that have laws that favor the right of public privacy you need to respect that, and just be mindful of the times we live in re: creepy dudes and fucking weirdos, but also think about the streets you walk on and how general attitudes vary from place to place. Some towns and cities and peoples have different attitudes, you need to know and respect that and recognize the environment your shooting in. So in some instances you probably need to be an accepted part of the furniture. If not, you might get told and approached. If you feel like an alien in a foreign land and that your stepping out of place, your going to have a bad time probably. Know your own tribe, and it helps to know the streets you walk on. Dont be afraid to take risks sometimes but be ready to back it up with integrity.

OP mentioned Time Square which has dudes with cameras who sit outside cinemas and big stores snapping you with flashes on the way out. Its a hustle and the whole place is, so lol that you got punked there, reads like it meant something which probably means you were in the wrong.

>She turns around and her eyes dart from me to her daughter (who was about 15 as I later found out, but could have easily passed for 18)

Not really street confrontation but confrontation none the less: a model I work with previous messaged me asking if I would help her out with headshot for a teen pageant she was entering into. I told her to come by my studio and it would be no problem. The day comes and I get a call from her saying she is outside my studio and her dad wants to talk to me. I walk out and an agitated man is standing there and asking me in broken English what is going on. I'm like "umm I'm helping *models name* out with head shots". He looks at me then goes "no no no way!" And grabs the model's hand and motions like they are leaving. The model then talks to her dad saying it's cool and everything. It's becoming a scene so I said how about we go to a park down the block and shoot the images there. The guy then goes "no no it's fine just know she is my little girl". I'm like do you want to come into the studio while I shoot? and he said no and walks to his car and drives off. Then the model tells me he was just dropping me off and her mom and picking her up. She I assured me everything was cool and he wasn't actually mad he was just trying to be protective.

Just be extra vigilant and mindful that parents with children in particular can be over-protective and may react angrily regardless. Legally they cant do much I think, if you have honest to god intentions and are in a public space and arent stalking folks then youre fine, i mean its fucking Time Square. Morally though you'll always be the one who is left wondering if you need absolution, Its in its very nature exploitative even if youre just a tourist snapping buildings with people walking into the frame. Not much more you can do but be honest about why youre there/what your doing and why. If your intentions are honest and true you need to get tough and not let joe public get on top of you and punk you, because they have no legal defense really, sure they can get mad but you dont have to delete shit or buy into their opinion. You can just walk away and if they follow you and keep harassing you theyre the ones who should be mindful of whats legal and whats not.

I've given up on trying street photography, I don't give a shit what people say, it's using people without their permission.

Honestly how can you feel nothing when you shove a 50mm lens in their face, there's something wrong with that, it's just using people as fodder for personal gain, it's unethical.

It's one step from being a paparazzi, but at least their honest, when you're stopped and asked why you're taking pictures of people minding their own business and you reply with your rehearsed lie,"I'm observing the artistic nature of human interaction within modern societal constructs." do you feel anything?

Or maybe I'm just a fucking pussy ass faggot. Oh well, I'll stick to drawing and animation I guess.

> shove a 50mm lens in their face

2 things wrong with this.

1. 50mm lenses are tiny. Mine is maybe 3.5cm long (an inch and a half to you yanks). You can't really shove that into someone's face

2. 50mm lenses aren't super wide. You can shoot from 6+ feet away and still have a reasonable picture. Once you start getting to 35mm and 28mm lenses you need to start getting in people's business.

Take this shitty out of focus shot from my last spool of film, shot on a nifty fifty. I was 10+ feet away from her, she never saw me

Thus concludes my nitpicking

Most people wont notice or wont care. You're just scared of that 1% chance of confrontation. Which forces you to learn how to handle those instances where a stranger gets mad at you. Smile and say Hi or Thank You. It's a good way to actually learn some real social interaction.

Pictures with people in it are almost always better anyway. You see a lot of socially scared "photographers" on here that post pictures that would make you think they live in a ghost town. I live in Vegas and I saw someone post Vegas photos of walls and roads without even a car on it. Fucking lame.

Pic related, its from a local art event - gave me a great chance to work on the street stuff and pushing film

>>

I wouldn't want to be photographed like an animal in the zoo.

You're nuts, you have no life experience at all. I'm talking about dirt fucking poor people who are scraping by day to day. they don't beg and they try to at least make a living doing what they can. Once again I am referring to a specific instance I witnessed where a tourist saw a poor lady seling birdseed by the side of the road, pulled out his camera and took photos of her and then just walked on. Does he HAVE TO buy a plate of seed from her? no. But it would have amounted to a few cents of his money which is close to nothing for him but could go some way to buying a meal for her. The lady was in my opinion rightfully pissed off.

I've been shooting for only about 5 years and very rarely have gotten into a confrontation.

I'd say it breaks down like this for me

60% of people say nothing
20% ask if I took their picture
10% ask if I'm with a newspaper
9% ask me to delete it
1% get in my face and try to get physical

Carry some Moo cards. They are business cards where you can customize each card with a different photo from your portfolio. I carry about 5 at a time while I'm out shooting.

If someone wants you to delete a photo but you don't want to, tell them so and walk away. Most people will leave it at that. If they start following you and start yapping about how they are going to call the cops, give them your card and say, "Well, that's up to you. And now you have my phone number, so they know where to find me." and then walk away again.

95% of people won't call.
>>
>>2687787
so you had 5% people called on you?
>>
>>2687791

yes, about 4 or 5 times since 2010. I only vaguely remember the first couple but didn't get arrested or anything. it was just "you should probably delete that photo to appease them but its up to you"

Hey there, I just recently (few months ago) started fooling around with my parents film camera (Olympus OM-2). I'm taking a trip around Europe this fall and thought it could be a great chance to take some pictures, even try some street photography. However I'm sorta worried about if I somebody finds it uncomfortable that I'm shooting people in public.

What should I do? If they start screaming at my face, I can't even show them the pictures I've shot given it's a film camera and the shutter sound is quite loud, so it's easy to get noticed.

Or is it only a problem in Murica or in Europe too?

>actually liking that autistic faggot

his point is how people are hypocrites about having cctv around them...well, no. cctv serves a specific purpose. the cams are in static positions, not deliberately following you down the street or into your place of work, school like a passive aggressive manchild/getting up in your face when you're just going about you business.

There's a thread on the board right now with some general adv... oh.
>>
>>2689246
Is that really him?
I assumed he was a big fellow since even the angriest of them hesitate to attack him.
I'd beat the shit of that scrawny prick.

Your point about the differences between him and cctv is spot on. Plus when people ask him what he's doing he escalates the situation with his stupid evasive answers.
He's not "making a point" about anything. He just enjoys being an asshole.
Wouldn't be surprised to see the prick posting shitty street photography of Asian people on this board actually.
>>
>>2689251
That's him. It was taken by someone who felt uncomfortable and did a write up about it a year or 2 ago. Ironic that she didn't want to infringe on his right to privacy so she covered his face in her post. There's the unblurred version somewhere.

And yes, his point gets lost with his replies to. Supporters in previous threads here say, oh but if they feel uncomfortable with him, they should ask him to stop or just walk away and yep that's been done...he keeps following, filming or saying "what?" "it's ok though..it's ok"

not to mention going into private property a few times like the mahjong parlor, following the waitress behind the counter at the restaurant, etc. if he got beaten, shot, or stabbed during one of his trips i wouldn't pity him.
>>
>>2689251
>I'd beat the shit of that scrawny prick.
no you wouldn't
just like 99% of his subjects who aren't violent

if you were stupid enough to assault him, he'd have enough proof to clean you out
>>
>>2689261
So you pretty much think there are no violent people in the world or at least not enough that there's any chance you'd ever meet one, even on 4chan?
I don't go around slapping strangers all day but I have my limits and if I were treated like the people in this guy's videos I'd eventually snap and get physical.
Yes, I'd probably end up paying dearly for it but that doesn't always stop people.
Have you never destroying something in anger even though you knew you'd have to fix it or buy a new one afterwards?

>>2689259
I'd forgot about the trespassing, yeah. Definitely beyond the whole "you're being filmed all the time anyway" point.

>>
>>2689239
Check the laws in the country you're visiting. they're all different. technically, in france, if you make somebody the subject of your photo, you have to get their signature on a model release, even if you have no intention of commercializing the picture. people in the frame of a street scene, however, don't, as they're not the subject.

generally speaking, nobody gives a shit, especially if it's a MF SLR, and double especially if you look like a touristy fuck. I watched a dude crawl all over the floor with a D600 to take a picture of a homeless dude for 5 min, and in the middle of Republique square no less.

Is this guy dead now?
>>
>>2683877
This happened to me last week actually.

Some guy was being a douchbag watching comedy and laughing loudly in the group study section of the library and I had my Bronica SQ and I know the shutter is loud af so I make a show of taking a picture of him and his friends and they quiet down real quick.

A few minutes later he walks over and asks what I was doing (I'd been helping a friend with his laptop problems) and I point at the laptop.

He gets frusterated and points at my camera and asks what it is. When I tell him its a camera he asks to see it, I decline. He gets more angry and demands to see the photo. I ask him if he knows what film is. He says no.
>doesnt even know what film is

I yell over to his group of friends asking if they know know what film is. One does, I have him explain it to his friend. Once he does, his friend asks me to delete it again.
>at this point I'm seriously wondering how he got accepted into college at all

I look at his friend and he tells the idiot why I cant.

Later another even stupider one comes over claiming to know the law and tells me to delete it because I took a picture of a person and the subject owns the pic.
>got'em.dng

Explain what single party consent is. Show them the actual law. Tell them Its my choice and they're not doing a good job convincing me to destroy it.

TL;DR

Fuck assholes m8

If you're not pissing people off every now and then you're not doing street photography right.
It really doesn't happen that often but it happens. The only way to get truly candid shots is to occasionally piss someone off.

I once got thrown out of a fair by a security guard who was convinced I was a pedophile. Despite showing him my camera that had only like 2-3 photos out of 500 that happened to have kids in them. Some people are just stupid assholes who are always on the lookout for excuses to behave like stupid assholes.

Many people don't know the law either. If you're in a public space you have no reasonable expectation of privacy AKA it's perfectly legal to take someones photo in a public space. If they don't like it they can call the cops in which case they will be the ones more likely to get a ticket for trying to intimidate you. At least, that's how it is in the USA.
>>
>>2692509
Nah, in the US of A one calls the cops one someone els, first the cops see if the person is black. If it is, then they beat the shit out of him/her, possibly to death. Then they start asking questions from the ones who called them. Later in the interrogation there might be some mentions of a camera, at which point it is already in pieces, locked away as evidence.
>>
>>2681994
>I usually carry around a copy with me with the relevant sentences highlighted
You got a copy of that I can print out?
>>
I've yet to have a confrontation, though I know it's bound to happen sooner or later. Most of the time if I catch someone in frame they apologize and ask if they ruined the shot. I just smile and say, "No worries" and they walk off. Is this because I'm white?

I generally walk around with earbuds in, ignoring people unless I think it will add to the shot. People will usually stop and ask what I'm doing, in a curious, interested tone.
>>
>>2692601
I'm from Australia so odds are that it won't apply to you. Just google it
>>
>>2692672
I've found that lingering is what causes the confrontation. I'll walk up, take someone's photo and then keep moving. They give you an odd look and that's about it. It's the staying around that freaks people out
>>
This is what the police print to give people who go to them to bitch about nothing:

I really should setup a webpage with just the law and copyright info on it with a simple URL so you can stick it on a card to handout when idiots get in your face. Something like toglaw.com or some shit.

Otherwise it is far too long winded and inconvenient to have a big printed out page of crap to shove under their noses. I'd much rather carry a few cards with basic info and a URL on it if they want more detailed informaiton.

I worked non profit, drove a donation truck to this location every weekend and sat there taking donations. A scammed started hanging around, holding a gas can to which people would give him money. As the days progressed, the town started hating him more and more.

This encouraged other townspeople to start wasting his time. They'd come up to him, ask him questions, keeping him from begging. I don't know the stuff he said, damn company I worked for allowed him to file a complaint on one of my coworkers for telling donors not to give money to him so I didn't approach him. But his remarks were obviously dumb, he seemed sarcastic in answers and would even pull a bible out of his back pocket and wave it around a little.

is this what people actually think?
why are amerifats so messed up?
do you commit honorable suicide everytime you look at someone for too long? Or recall a memory of someones face?

Jesus a photo is just a snapshot of time, something our eyes do all the time, there is no violence occurring no moral quandary.

What DOES occur is delusional people thinking their privacy is always under attack and that pedophiles are everywhere. And their fapping vigorously to photos of people in plain sight.

Like,...this is some societal tier psychosis right there.

thats the way of it. the people who want to find a reason to have drama don't care what you are actually shooting, you have a camera and they need the attention and/or sympathy.
its never anyone you are actually shooting. its always someone who just sees the camera and sees a great chance to play bully/victim.
seen someone stop a car once and drive back to get out and harass people for that that couldn't have even known they or their kids existed, and to top it off the guy didn't even have his kids with him.

just wanted a morally defensible reason to push someone around, and reason play victim if anyone pushed back.
