The newest edition of Magnum Contact Sheets is slightly smaller than the original for a fraction of the cost. I think I paid £35 for my copy, new. Definitely worth that.
If you're looking to branch into photobooks on a budget check out Phaidon's new 55 series. I have the Daido Moriyama one and it's pretty good. Good mix of photos with a bit of explanation. There are parts where an image is spread over two pages which I'm not a big fan of, but it's to be expected with a book of this size and price point. Looks good! I'll definitely have a look at them. I recently got a copy of Magnum Magnum, really nice piece. I like about the more 'expensive' books (expensive = unlike pic attached) that they include good text, eg The Americans or the essays in Winogrand's SFMOMA

I got Salgado's Genesis last year and it's additive weight made my book shelf bend a bit.
As for price worthyness I've moved to buying books used off of Amazon based on where they were printed. US books from .com, Japanese books from .co.jp

I took out contact sheets from the library and it was super awesome. If you shoot b&w, doubly so, as you get to see a direct comparison to their workflow.
It was amazing how much people edited down, and how little they cropped. Most of when they did crop was obvious, though. It was also interesting to see how, generally, the quality of shots they DIDN'T pick was still pretty high.

Anything by Alec Soth is interesting because of the way he puts books together.

depends on what you want to learn. mcs shows you how pros work. i think its an intermediate-advanced book, as in, you might not get it fully if youre a noob or youre not used to the concepts of editing or narrative.

Subtle in the way that the photos aren't in themselves about death or loss for the most part, but you really get that sense of loneliness/grief/wandering from the book as a whole. That's hard as hell to pull off and those two photographers seem to be some of the best at it, for sure.

'Street photography now' is a great start to get to know some photographers and styles. Educational books on photography theory you can't beat Time Life.
What about William Egglestone? I flipped through 'guide' but don't really get the pictures.

funniest thing is the only proof I can find is this picture which shows just how badly I treat all of my photobooks in general. They were only arranged like that for the picture otherwise they're left in a bookshelf which is one small saving grace

I waited so long for this damn book to get reprinted that I even managed to plan a trip to Paris and visit the HCB museum all while the book was still on preorder. I'm so glad I finally have it, it's really a great book.
Also the Nick Brandt On This Earth/A Shadow Falls/Across the Ravaged Land trilogy is really powerful stuff, that's another favorite of mine. I haven't bought a new book in a while, though.

Well the first edition was printed in 1952 and those books go for like $500 up to several thousand, this reissue wasn't released until 2014. I have no idea how many more books are left in this printing run, maybe there are a lot, but unless you're very patient you may not want to miss it this time.

I looked at the contact sheets in a book store and I wasn't too crazy about them. Most times I thought they picked the worse picture. Usually they pick the blurry ones or the ones with with the least interesting subject. They do pick ones with better composition then I ever could though. I admit it is pretty much essential even if you don't agree with their choices. It's also fun trying to guess which one you would pick and see what they actually chose.
Walker Evans in my opinion has amazing portraits but his architectural shots are awful. From the pictures it looks like he had only a telephoto lens which might be the case for most people shooting large format at that time. That is what it looks like to me which makes sense since telephotos are great for portraits and not so great for architecture or at least the way he did it.
I usually stay away from photo books or photos by other people in general. I'd rather look at something awful I took than something great someone else took.
