good fucking luck with that shallow dof and manual focus.
Had similar setup. Every time i shot stuff ended up having to shoot dozens more of the same because of a precaution to make sure subject is in focus. Ended up with gigabytes of uselesss photos that are out of focus.

Aperture is the slightly more knowledgeable man's megapixels. Gotta get more so you know it's better (and therefore, you know you're better)
Any pictures taken using a Neutral Density filter?
I bought a Variable Density ND filter recently and was mortified to find that despite the price of almost $300, it had no external threads so shooting near the ocean resulted in a lot of salt buildup.
The other thing I noticed was that regardless of the position of the outer element, I ended up with an uneven tint on my wide angle lens.
Should I have used a non-variable ND filter (solid, evenly-tinted glass slab)?
Any advice or tips?

Variable Density ND filters consist of 2 polarizing filters, this may explain the uneven illumination. These filters are used mostly by videographers using dslr, are you shooting video? If not you are probably better off with normal (cheaper) ND filters.

No video... just still pictures. Perhaps it's more noticeable on a wide-lens. I tried using Live Preview to see if I could darken the image but it was always shifting when I turned the outer element. Either one corner would be dark or the sides were or the middle. I found it useless and regret spending the money on it. The girl at my camera store is an advanced photographer and recommended it to me when I told her I wanted to buy two different ND filters. Really disappointing.
It is a Hoya Variable Density Filter 3-400 (see pic). If I remember correctly it cost around $280 locally. Way too much money considering that I can't use it in bright light.

Stay out of really shitty neighborhoods, bring a friend, and tell people you will delete the photos/edit them out.
If you're that paranoid about street, shoot with a telephoto mirrorless from a distance. It's pretty creepy though. A good trick is to find a nice background, line up a shot and let your subject walk into the frame. Nowhere near as sketch as aiming up someone.

I wouldn't really classify this as macro. You're not particularly close, there's next to not details to look at at all... it's just a standard "I just got my first prime lens because /p/ told me I needed one and can't think of a way to use it" photo

I built my own set out of three 4' x 8' boards, and used black chalkboard paint. I'm shooting with two Einstein e640s I bought last fall. This shot I used yarn for the lines instead of chalk. The theme for these shots is perception.
