Hey /p/,
I have a side hustle/hobby where I sell stuff and I've come to the conclusion that attractive photography makes people buy your shit. I can usually produce some pretty attractive photos using lighting in my house, but that requires taking the pictures at specific times of day.
So now I'm looking for a small and inexpensive lighting setup that would allow me to have better control of my light source. Subject matter are pretty small items and will be 0-5 ft away. I shoot with a stock 14-42mm lens on my DSLR with a moderate amount of natural light...

Great resource. Thanks.

NP...aside from that, you're interested not in the Watts of a light source, but the watt-seconds of a light source. Continuous lights, even stupidly bright ones, are really dim compared to strobes.
You really want strobes. You can get a two strobe setup for around $200 (avoid speed lights if you're just working out of a home studio -- that portability costs you money and power). With that, you can also build a lightbox/set up almost any lighting you want with a little DIY effort. I don't recall...

i had a nice salad for dinner
gear threads are for jerks
Look into the rule of thirds, and probably shoot with a wider aperture to blur the clutter in the background and draw the eye toward your subject. The lighting is a little flat so maybe change the environment entirely.
Horizontal would have been better too.
I think I didn't get enough soup from Ralphs

For portraits you want a short tele lens. 85mm equivalent is a common one (that means 50mm on your camera).

More like that?
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased my first DSLR with a very specific purpose. Last year when I saw all my friends and family, I took a lot of camera phone shots that came out very poorly. This year, I would like to get some very good shots of people.
The setting would be- the person isn't looking, they are most likely moving, we are indoors, and the room is lit or dimly lit.
I'm would like to know, given that situation: what manual settings would you recommend?
My reasoning behind the no-flash is because it tends to really kill someones vibe. I'm sure the loud shutter won't help either, but there's nothing I can do about that.
Any and all advice is welcome, thanks in advance.

High ISO, shutter priority, buy a lens with a decent aperture (24mm 2.8 for example)
>>2720446
Maybe get the cheap 50mm prime for the low aperture. I have it and love it. Only problem you have to watch out for is the conversion factor if you dont have a full frame. So if you got a small rooms then maybe get something wider.
>>2720446
You can try to dissipate built-in flash light with some tricks, maybe it'll work. No settings will help you without light, you can't just cheat physics - if it'll be too dim, you won't be able to capture moving subjects.
On the other hand, i'm willing to bet that your high-iso photos would look alright in low resolution and after noise reduction, so it all depends on how much quality can you sacrifice.
And as other guy said, nifty fifty. God, this lens is just perfect for its...

Ok so I'm anticipating a new K-3 for Christmas, and I've never worked with digital photography before. I just installed Lightroom, and I want to get accustomed to some of the features it offers. I don't intend on doing heavy editing, but the ability to fix exposure mistakes that couldnt be addressed from an impromptu shot is nice. If anyone has a few raw files they'd like to post for me to mess around with in lightroom that would be cool.
>>2720434
Look around Youtube for tutorials, Fro knows Photos usually critiques and process RAWs from others and puts them out in the comments. You can download them and follow his processing. Also experiment, see what things do what, don't be afraid to totally rape a photo, you can always reset it back to original state.
nigga who's so rich they're giving you a k3? santa doesnt love you that much.

I gave a friend my 70D.
i'm looking for a film scanner, <$300. i'm in canada, so would rather not buy off of ebay (shipping is ridiculous). the best thing available on my local classifieds is a nikon ls-2000 for $200.
this scanner is from 1999, and i'm unsure if it's worthwhile to spend $200 on such an old piece of equipment. i'd need to get an scsi-to-usb and run an older version of windows in a virtual desktop.
i need a scanner for mostly black and white 35mm negatives; i want decent quality that could work in an online publication or for making small prints.
>>2720237
Any of the film orientad flat bed scanners (Epson Vxxx, Canoscan xxxx, etc) will give you better results than that (with far less work too).
>>2720237
>online publication or for making small prints.
I am a fan of dedicated film scanners but for what you need, a flat bed will be fine.
if you want better quality don't look any older than the Coolscan 8000/4000
>>2720237
For shits and giggles, the US Amazon is offering that thing for about $906 right now.
Can someone edit this photo and get faces of the people in the top left corner
I seriously doubt it
>>2720098
Not possible. The faces are about 4 pixels each. If you provide a higher resolution picture then maybe.
Photo editing isn't fucking magic though
couldnt get a number plate off this one?
How much money do you suppose these guys loose during their holidays?

Physically impossible, mate.
Probably not much, but I never understood why they can't let you just place an order and warn you that it won't be processed until after they reopen.

motherfuckers can't even turn a light OFF during shabbat, who knows what arbitrary religious rule this is
How can I get a photo to look like an old photo?
I have money but nothing else.
>>2719729
>I have money but nothing else.
Buy a bunch of VSCO presets to simulate old films
>>2719729
Buy a bunch of disposable cameras from the gas station, and shoot everything on them.
>>2719729
Buy some sort of film point and shoot and shoot fujifilm superia
does anyone have a DL of the newer VSCO packs?
i have packs 1-4, just want to try out 5, 6, and 7 before I buy them.
I regret buying all except pack 4 now; I never use the others. I want to test them out first and will buy the ones I actually want to use.

1-7 for Camera Raw.
My auntie is on a nostalgia trip & wants to get a camcorder for my uncle to 'capture precious family moments' this christmas.
She's asked for advice on buying a camcorder. I've never had to use one since getting my DSLR, are they still as shitty as they were back in 2010? Anybody have any recommendations?
>>2717772
I kinda doubt auntie would like to pay for an A7S, GH4 or Blackmagic and beyond, so all you get is still pretty crap.
But I'm sure recording with a Yicam, GoPro or Sony PJ530 or A6000 or whatever will work quite okay for family moments.
>>2717772
Sony F65. It's okay.
They're not high tech in any sense, doubt a DSLR with interchangeable lenses and settings would help them out much. Are there any good non DSLR cameras with comparable video quality?
what kind of camera do they use in the TV show The Wire?
it's Nikon and for sure not digital
That's an F2S.

Someone in this thread:
