Bespoke camping tarp vs cheap-o wal-mart tarp

Hi /out/. What are your opinions on expensive bespoke camping tarps like the Kelty Noah vs. cheaper all purpose tarps found at wal mart?

Obviously they will be lower quality, but do they work well for cheap camping?

Dont pay extra for a fucking tarp. I have a walmart tarp qnd it does exactly what a tarp is supposed to do. Im surprised they didnt call it tactical

I've never camped with just a tarp so I don't know, but thanks for the advice.

I was worried that the price would be inflated for no reason. Is there a good cheap tarp one would recommend?

I've tried $5 tarps from yard sales and $350 tarps made for camping. There's hardly difference. Camping tarps are designed to be more light weight. Just get a 9x5 tarp from Lowe's, Wal-Mart, or wherever. "Camping tarps" are no different than tech companies putting "for gaming" on their shitty products to make it sell. Shilling out a few hundred bucks for a lightweight tarp isn't worth it.

I think its worth it to pay extra for a tarp that is crinkly and loud. A little bit worth it for buying a camoflaged one too if you are trying to be sneaky. Mine is green, not cammo, ands silent.

I've used tarps from campmore for over a decade. It's the only company that makes tarps that the grommets don't get ripped out over time or in high winds. And I've never had a campmore tarp wet out in heavy rain.

no big difference except in material/pack in size and weight.
expensive ones are made to be packed into tiny little bundles, the smaller it folds down, the more expensive it is.
get a brown or green tarp over a blue one though, blue tarps are a dead givaway for green sc/out/s

What size of Tarp do you guys use? Like for a single person to put over a hammock or simple wood elevated thingy? I'm planning on buying a 3x3 METER one

You're doing it right.

Mine (Cuben-sotted Norfag across the board) is 8'5"x8'5" (2,6mx2,6m), and more than enough for me -- though desu I wouldn't mind a little more covered space. Go for the square, it gives you a few extra options as compared to a rectangular, or God forbid, a tapered/custom tarp.

As other anons have explained, it really comes down to what you are after.

A "wal-mart" tarp (in Norway, similar to the ones from Biltema and Europris, I guess) are heavy, some have quite few grommets, loops or other ways to fasten them along the sides, no loops on the tarp's interior, and make a lot of noise in the wind -- and even more noise when it rains. Really, it can get impressively loud.

A "camping" tarp should NOT have grommets. Grommets tear, easily, compared to sown in, proper loops or similar. Also, a tarp made for the outdoors should have a lot more points of anchorage, and preferably plenty of tie-out on the tarps interior. This gives you way more options for creating a low profile yet still roomy interior space.

Your choice, both work -- yet I will not agree with the anons who believe it isn't worth it.

Pic related -- versatility increases with more tie-outs
