You need to use small short strokes to remove material. Never remove material in large strips if you are using a carving knife or normal knife used for carving. That is the wrong tool for removing long strips. Use a plane, spokeshaver or draw knife for removing long strips. Using a carving knife for long strips like that makes the cut far less controlled. You can mess up the work piece or cutting yourself. Also, take frequent breaks. You can quickly tire your muscles and end up cutting yourself.

Making some garden stakes by chopping some bamboo into about 3ft sections and "de-limbing" it using a machete. I had finished chopping one set of stakes so I tried to throw the machete down and stick it blade first into the ground (the ground was very soft due to an excess amount of rain at that time), the plan was that I would stick the machete into the ground and then gather up all the stakes I had chopped and put them in a pile.

The machete ricocheted off the ground, spun around edge first, and chopped about half an inch into my thumb. My bone stopped the blade and it was very painful. These pics are after I had cleaned the wound up and applied superglue to hold the skin together and keep it from bleeding so much.

>Knife slips and very neatly, nearly slices off the pad of my index finger
>Bleed so much I start panicking, am convinced I've cut off my whole fingertip
>Too far from hospital for help
>I wrap it in gauze and give it up for lost
>Decide to open emergency bottle of wine to drown my sorrows
>Try to jimmy out cork using knife
>Label is in Spanish, I didn't realize wine was carbonated and pressurized
>Cork flies out and hits me in the eye, followed by a spray of acidic wine
>Clap hands to eyes, gauze falls off, wine spills everywhere and is attacked by ants
>Stumble around the forest, blind and bleeding

It was pretty intense, I didn't feel it so much at the site of impact itself but more in my core, almost like I'd gotten the wind knocked out of me. My thumb itself felt like I had smashed it with a hammer more than anything else. My vision went blurry for a little bit and I felt like I was gonna fall over, I was probably close to passing out or something. Then the adrenaline kicked in and I just squeezed my thumb, went inside, and ran water over it in the sink for about 10 minutes. I got the jitters pretty bad while I was running water over it, that made it hard to hold my hands steady when I applied the super glue.
>>
>>691985
Probably smashed/severed a major nerve ending or whatever and made you feel like that. Fuuuuuck, that description made me cringe. Any bone damage?

Had plenty of injuries whilst out and about, but funnily enough it was getting out of my car after a little road trip that caused the most painful.
full force slammed the door on just my index, no idea how it didn't do any real damage.
But that pain, couldn't think for about 10 seconds, have no recollection of it but the girlfriend says I just bent over the bonnet and breathed very heavily. At first it was like stubbing your toe badly, but it was about 10-15 minutes after when it really began, after the adreneline left. It was such an intense, deep throbbing, I ended up throwing up abruptly, I just couldn't take the pain. Took an hour and plenty of pain killers to subside enough that I could actually think straight.
I've tore ligaments, broken my nose, almost lost an eye, and this was infinitely more painful.
>>
>>691995
You're probably right about the severing a nerve ending, that happened about a year ago and the tip of my thumb still doesn't have much feeling in it in that area. No major bone damage to speak of luckily. It took about 4 weeks before I used my thumb in a normal capacity again but it was still really tender up to about 6-7 weeks afterwards.
>>
>>691996
>lost an eye

do tell
>>
>>692000
Almost. Nothing exciting, got in a fight with a guy, not a serious one though. I hit him a bit too hard, he got angry, pinned me down, tried to gouge my eyes out with his thumbs, came very close in succeeding.
Had pretty crap vision in both my eyes since, and the nerves are fucked up, I can stick my finger in my eye and push it aorund as hard as I want, feel nothing.

Only paid I've felt was a deep financial pain after a short solo camping trip.
>be summer
>take an overnight trip to an alpine Lake on a pretty intense trail
>after the trip, was a little dehydrated, tired, and pretty hungry
>decide I need groceries
>accidentally hit new parked car in parking lot
>battle of morals takes place in my head
>decide to leave number because I'd want the same
>long story short, fraudulent insurance claim ended with me being literally robbed 1000$

Maybe one day I'll sue the guy, but I'm a pretty poor college fag.
Also have another story, more outdoor related, but same financial hurt. Not as bad though
>>
>>692017
Story on the fraudulent claim?
>>
>>692018
Sure, I probably won't do much about it no matter how much I say I will, so I'll share story.
>get contacted by guy
>seems like soft spoken, understandable, bro kind of guy
>don't actually own a car (my friends) so don't know how to handle insurance
>tell him I'd pay his deductible and he agrees
>he initially tells me it's 500$
>changes and says it's actually 1000$
>agreed to pay because I didn't know how insurance works
>starved and worked my ass off to pay this, rent, tuition, and so on
>pay it off and it's a done deal
>out of the blue, insurance company calls me
>says I'm responsible for the rest of the repair costs
>asks me to confirm if I've already paid 500$ deductible
>"actually, I paid 1000$"
>said they might owe me money seeing as repairs may be less than 1000$
>call this dude out
>he stops contacting me, ignoring my calls and texts and says the insurance company wasn't supposed to contact me (he literally said that)
>insurance company contacts me again
>apparently repair now costs upwards of 2000$ and I'll still have to repay them
>say theyd contact me later about it
>never hear from them again

I'm kind of scared as to what would happen if I contacted anyone about this, so I haven't done anything about it since. All this over a small dent in a door. I'm almost positive the guy never got the repairs and pocketed the money.

Anyway, story #2 coming up

Oh damn, that looks awful. I've only had minor pokes from catfish spines and even those hurt like hell. I know of a guy who got a catfish spine stuck about an inch deep into his foot when he was fishing barefoot in a boat and the other guy he was fishing with tossed a catfish back to him so that he could put it in the cooler. Landed spine first right on his foot.

Financial pain and injury anon
story #2

>be night time
>go out fishing with some friends
>initially fly casting, but no luck
>put pole back into car
>decide to go out and snag browns with a hand net instead
>only successful person is my buddy's girlfriend (6.5/10 girl who is pretty out savvy sometimes, raised some garter snakes, bred them, and sold them. Pretty cool in that sense in my opinion)
>cop comes by because public parks/recreational areas close after 10pm or some bullshit thing like that
>asks how we caught fish and who caught it
>I step up because I recall girl not having a valid fishing license (i think it may have expired)
>informs me that it's illegal to net a fish
>fuck.jpg
>get a court date for illegally poaching animals or something
>unfortunately scheduled dead center of spring break
>plead guilty and tell judge my story
>bro judge gives me a plea in abeyance deal because he thought the situation was stupid
>still have to pay a fine though of about 150$
>also missed out on spring break while buddy and his girl went to yellow stone for the break

Anyway, I love going /out/. But the worst pain or injury Ive sustained while /out/ doesn't happen to me physically, but financially. Fucking equipment costs a shit ton (though, I guess the equipment does last if used properly, its like a really expensive initial investment, so its not that big a deal) and then there are these fluke occurrences when I'm just fucking around or being a dumb ass. Hindsight is always 20/20 though and looking back, i know i could have easily avoided these situations.
For example, I could've said I caught the fucking fish with my pole which i left in the car. Or I could've driven away from the accident I caused. Don't know why I bother going about telling the truth and shit if it only gets me in shitty situations. I guess I have peace of mind though.
