Extremely rare serrated B7 for diving.

not too shabby. Though I prefer more bushcrafty blades myself. 1/8'' thick, full flat or scandi grinds, and ~4'' blade.

Why shouldn't I buy a Becker bk10?

I would carry it, a SAK or similar and a bahco saw. Seems about perfect specs at $73
>>
>>688752
wow this actually looks sexy
but fuck the busse shill nevertheless!
>>
>>688769
No reason not to, the bk15/16/17 are also good and lighter
>>
>>688769

i'm not a fan of prybars, and the bk10 is about 3/16'' thick with a saber grind - i'd much prefer something like a condor bushlore - more bushcraft, less survival prybar meme.

I mean, if you absolutely have to, beckers are always a good deal, but something about them just doesn't click with me.
>>
I live in the UK and I want to buy a cool multi purpose knife, does anyone know what the laws on that are here?
>>
>>688816

as far as I know, you can carry a non-locking blade 3 inches or shorter "without good reason", and any other knife "with good reason". Good reason being for example going camping, or fishing, not "just in case of needing it".

>>
>>688859
umad? psh nothing personnel, kid. rip in piece. y u mad tho? gorilla fucking warfare
>>
>>688855

you are contradicting yourself then.

Why exactly is the becker "piece of steel" better than the condor piece of steel?
Because I can think of a few reasons it isn't.

Blade thickness, for example (condor is 1/8, bk10 is 3/16). Also, grind (scandi vs saber), and the general blade profile.

And if you want to go into 1095 cro van vs "mere" 1075, you might as well go and get O1, A2, or something like that.

Bushlore wouldn't be my first choice for a bushcraft knife, but not everyone has a $200+ budget, and sometimes you have to take that into account.
>>
>>688864
Q fucking C
at least with the becker i know what the fuck i am getting
>>
>>688865

And heat treat..
>>
>>688870

I get it. I still wouldn't take the becker though. I'd go for something higher quality than condor, but we're talking $80+.

To be honest, I didn't bother to check if the $73 was just for the becker, or for the whole kit in the original post. You can get a bushcrafter hc for 75 bucks, but that's without a sheat, with one you're looking at 105 iirc.

Like I said - the bk10 doesn't click with me - too thick, too long, wrong grind, wrong handle (wrong, as in: not the one I prefer, not necessarily "bad").

Asking for suggestions of a folding knife for my dad.

Ordering from EU, budget is around 60€.

Some useful info:

- It will be stored usually on his work bag, it will get scratched and it will get dirty
- He won't use is for any heavy duty task

I'm thinking about getting this knife very soon. I was looking for a scandi with good steel for a good price. Dose anyone have one or heard about it?

http://www.heinnie.com/real-steel-bushcraft#product-tabs

I currently own Helle but it has a small chip in the blade. The steel they use is "triple laminated stainless" but that doesn't actually tell me about the steel.
>>
>>689063

all I had on this machine. Be happy I didn't use comic sans (thought about it).
>>
>>689081

real steel is a chinese company. I have one small neck knife from them in D2 - I was quite impressed by the quality and the fit and finish - nicely rounded edges, g10 scales, satin finish on the blade.

They seem alright.

Helle's triple laminated stainless is something like sandvik laminate. Not bad.

They also have versions in carbon steel.

I don't know if this is the correct place to ask but I am looking for a multi tool or a swiss army knife. Busse knives are mostly shitty just based on how thick they are. A thin, longer machete would do almost everything better than a Busse and be lighter for it.

The only thing a Busse is good for is batoning, which is just as much a meme as /out/ says it is. It's one of the things that makes me respect /out/ over the terrible knife forums full of idiots battoning wood for no reason in their backyard.

There are a few people here who actually do go /out/. Not a lot, but a few.

>>

Single bevel are absolute shit for most everything, despite what Grayman says.

What's so special about those knives aside from the good marketing and some pictures of them in the military?

>>689618

then you probably want something 3 inches long, and uncoated. Don't go too short, or it will be a detriment to food prep.

I'd recommend something like this, but I still don't know if you fancy spending $150 on a small knife.

On the low end, you can get something like a condor mini bushlore (around 35 bucks) - they can be a little hit or miss at times, but the design is pretty solid.

Add to that the izula/msk I already mentioned, and pick something in your price bracket.
>>
>>689624

If food prep is involved I'd always recommend TWO knives.

A stainless steel folder - I'd say an Opinel as they're lightweight but they're not the easiest to clean if you gunk up the pivot.

A carbon steel fixed knife. By not using it on food prep it means you can be a bit more carefree in its use and maintenance - don't have to worry about food safe oils etc.
>>
>>689625

it's always a good idea to have two knives, wether food prep is involved, or not (it usually is).
>>
Good grind for skinning birds like pheasant and pigeon?
>>
>>689625
Seconding this. It's tough to completely clean things while out. A dedicated food knife ensures that only food comes into contact with my food. I use a thin, light stainless steak knife from the dollar store.
>>
>>689572
I agree to that. It's stupid, doesn't keep anyone safe and punishes people who may need them.
>>
>>689587
I was looking at the edgemaker and thought why not just learn to freehand? Ideally down the road I'd like to get a machine or one of the kits that locks the bade in place because I know from experience I'll never sharpen as good as a machine. Filing chainsaws has taught me that
>>
>>689457

Do you know who made that sheath?

Where it came from? did it come with the knife?

I have one in the exact same style for my B11 but I couldnt find a source on the sheath
>>
>>689724

Because you dont need to file nor grind a knife blade, you need to sharpen it, which requires a much more contained , precise and smooth action.

Trust me, DC4 for field stone, Sharpmaker for home.

If you want to go ful autismo you have those japanese stones and some compounds to strop knives on leather.

Wanting to know how to sharpen freehand is not contradictory with having a sharpener that makes your life easy.

I can sharpen my knives freehand with my DC4 but you will never ever get as good an edge or as precise as if you did it with help (sharpmaker angles, big stone flat surface, etc...)

Trench sak?
>>
>>689101
Leathermans suck compared to Victorinox. Both of those SAKs are grst choices if they speak to you. Personally I am not a fan of the wavy edge blades. They are sharp and cut super well for longer, but they are too hard to sharpen. I'd rather have a straight edge that dulls faster but is easier to sharpen.

Deluxe Tinker is good, but I personally would rather have a model with a saw over those dinky pliers. And I'd rather have a corkscrew over a Phillips screwdriver because you can always use a flathead screwdriver on a Philips screw.

And sometimes I go camping with wine. So the tool choice is really what you see yourself using the most.

actually that's the worst issue with leatherman multitools the week pliers.
two kinds of leatherman pliers one has weak pliers that snap the other has a weak joint that will give and deform.

if all you need is pliers then go victorinox. it's the other tools that are awfully badly accessible on a victorinox compared to a leatherman hat usually has one handed opening on main tools and better designed ergos overall.

I don't know what I'm talking about, but here's your reply

You probably want at least a coarse and fine. If you get a little knick in the blade or it gets really dull, you will spend a month trying to get a good edge with a real fine grit.

One of those 3pc sets looks decent, but I don't think I could go full autism and get some 9pc extra special hone n' strop extravaganza. I just have a coarse and fine diamond thing, but the fine isn't crazy fine, I could probably use a ceramic deal for that razor edge.
>>
>>690610

that looks like the bahco knife, I happen to have that on hand....

4in blade
about 2mm thick

came fine, very sharp

Companion is a smidge shorter, but can come thicker at 3+mm depending on the model.

Hey /kg/
In a recent thread on this board I saw some people recommending a knife that I can't for the life of me remember the name of. It's an older, discontinued knife made by either Schrade or Kershaw that can be had for $20 or less on ebay, commonly found with an orange handle. IIRC had 'elk' in the name but can't find what I'm looking for.

Beautiful.

I think the thing I like least about custom knifemakers is that they'll build this beautiful knife but then give you no sheath, or a really crappy sheath.

If you get good, you should either learn to make good leather or kydex sheaths, or partner with someone who does.

The world needs affordable, traditional-looking military "tactical" knives.

Knives between 4 and 6 inches that are light and can be carried in a vest.

If you do serrations, do them on the spine.

Something tough but not heavier than 9 oz.

Also good-looking, without weird shapes or with more noble materials instead of spikes and g10 everywhere.

Look up Winkler Knives to see what I mean.

I'd be your customer
>>
>>690808
That really pisses me off. I believe that a knife isn't complete until it has a sheath. A sheath should be partnered with the knife. I make knives to be used, not to be put on display.

I'm okay at making leather sheaths, I've got form fitting them down to the point where the way they hold a knife almost as well as Kydex (depending on the style of grip, of course).

From what i've gathered, Kydex is pretty easy to work with. I've stayed away from it because I've always had a hard on for pre-1970's tools, but i'm realizing that kydex is the way forward as far as quality sheaths for every day use knives go.

I'm working on a design that incorperates aspects of a seax, khukuri, and some of the newer benchmades (lower at the base of the spine to help with fine carving by putting your thumb on the spine).

I'll post some pictures when I get around to forging it.

>>690810
Oh, okay. I usually just melt down knives that aren't passable (have a crack, warp, ground too much, etc). If I end up with an ugly one, i'll try to find you on here and we can set something up.

A knife with cracks or warps is basically useless. Especially for someone who will (hopefully) use it.

>>

The problem with light knives is that you have to begin changing some of the fundamentals. For instance, make them half-tang, drill holes in the tang, do a spike-tang, create an alloy/use other metals in conjunction with HC steel, use non-traditional materials for the grips (fiberglass, balsa, plastic, synthetic rubber, or no grips at all), or make the knife thinner.

I'd like to be able to make what you're talking about one day. Sadly, i'm nowhere good enough/don't have the equiptment to do it right now.

I'm not saying it can't be done, it just opens the door for problems/extensive R&D.

I'll keep this in mind though. Who knows, this may be the idea that makes me famous.
>>
>>690821
I liked season 1, for the most part. I had a few problems with it, though. The first being that Ryu guy.

>forge is literally a satelite dish
>can't get over his mid-2000's anime street fighter style of dress
>leaves halfway through for some reason, then comes back like nothing happened
>"the one thing they don't know about me is, i'm badass with an angle grinder"
>his axe looked like absolute shit

A few of the winners had absolutely no craftsmanship (see above), it looked like they took an angle grinder to a piece of barstock.

But, "eet will cut".

I'm really looking forward to season 2.
>>
>>690826

You could perhaps buy slabs of the desired steel and just grind them to shape instead of forging your own thing.

VG10 is adequate and is not very expensive.

Also I dont think drilling holes in the tang is too bad for the use those knives will see.

Gunkote is by far the best coating for knives that I know, and that is relatively cheap also.

I'd love to do it myself but I dont have the means, I wouldnt care to design knives for you if you make them.
>>
>>690815
>That really pisses me off. I believe that a knife isn't complete until it has a sheath. A sheath should be partnered with the knife. I make knives to be used, not to be put on display.
That's good to hear. You're doing it right. I like leather sheaths the most myself personally, because I'm not into tactical knives. And you're right that a leather sheath done right can hold a knife really well.

A kydex sheath would be fine with a hard-wearing handle like fiberglass or micarta, but do you think it would eventually mar a wooden handle too much, with enough insertions/removals? That hard plastic against the wood might be like sandpaper.
>>
>>690820
I don't know if I could do it for under 80. I try to keep my prices fair (the main reason why I staeted blacksmithing was because I couldn't afford handmade knives), but there is a point where the costs are high enough that I can't make any profit (cost of propane, belts for my sanders, good quality steel, wood [which can be cancelled out if I use something cheap, harvested, and/or readily available], as well as the time I put into it).

As I said above, I try to make it so the average person can afford my stuff, there's just some cases where I have to charge what feels like too much. Which is why i'm going to be making the Puukkos. They're an easy shape, I have a fuckton of mahogany that I got for free, and I should be able to do them in batches.

Anyway, i'm going to F5 this one more time and go to bed. I'm going to stop making sense soon. If this thread isn't archived in the morning, i'll reply to whatever I missed.

All pf this is correct. I definitely could. The easiest/cheapest way would to be to get in touch with someone with a CNC machine or programmable plasma cutter and have them cut the blanks out, then i'd just grind them by hand and do all of the fun parts. I'll screencap this for future reference.

Is gunkote like cerakote? I usually just oil quench my knives and leave that on the spine (I sharpen after my quench). It works well enough, if the user takes into account that I use high carbon steel and takes care of it accordingly. Pic related, the finish on a knife i'm almost done with.

>I don't have the means
I know this feel, and struggled with it for a while. I have my forge at my parents', who live in the suburbs. But i'm a poorfag and made it work. Look up "devil forge". That's a cheap, but amazing, forge. You can make a blacksmithing setup for not a ton of money, surprisingly. I'll go further into it tomorrow, assuming this thread is still up.

>>690835
I believe that customer service should always come first. And part of that is selling a quality, complete piece. Cutting $15 off of a $300 commission and adding an hour of work is completely worth it if I can sleep that night knowing that my customer recieved a complete product.

If the finish on the grips is good enough, it won't be an issue. I use cyanoacrylate right now, and it's tough as hell. I may switch to lacqeur or UV finish soon, if it's more durable. The easiest way to keep the grips in good shape is to sand and polish the Kydex so there aren't ant rough edges to drag on the wood.
>>
>>690846

cerakote is like a "crayon" , a bit waxy.

It doesnt stick well to steel and worst of all, it stains whatever you're cutting, including food.

Gunkote is more like "dust". It wears extremely well, it's very durable and even in eroded areas the coating is still there, just with less density.

Take a look at a worn black Fällkniven with cerakote and a worn Chris Reeve for reference.

Gunkote is by far superior and surprisingly not expensive.
>>
>>690846
I'd be interested to know more, anon. How are you heat treating and what kind of heat treat are you going for?

Also, have you considered a modern leukko design? If puukko works for you in terms of simplistic design then a leukko might hold some appeal.

I can picture a 6-7" blade, a chubby rat tang and a slender ovalled mahogany grip, with (matching carbon) steel end cap peened on. Sell with simple folded kydex sheath.

Another great design is the little knife. Something like the bark river imp, could be super popular at a lower price. Full size handle with a sub size blade makes for a great little carving hard use knife
>>
>>689991
i believe having the means to sharpen a blade is crucial. while im familiar with conventional means, a few days ago i tested to see whether gritty toothpaste could double as a way to hone a blade. using a piece of glass and toothpaste smothered on like a paint palette, with a very old pocket knife, motioning the blade like you would a ceramic. i was able to hone the blade to sharpen paper (roughly) where it was not able to before. just something to consider
>>
>>690893

I'm using vegitable oil for a quench, and then annealing at 400 for 1-1.5 hours, resulting in an RH of about 50-55, if I remember correctly. The steel comes out a straw color.

I've had problems with the quench in the past, which is why i need the practice hardening. And also seekng the performance of knives after being annealed at different temperatures.

>>690959
Grinding is the fucking worst. What's your setup like? Just remember to lock your arms in and move with your hips and knees in order to get a matching angle. I had to sharpen >>690846 with an angle grinder because my piece of shit harbor freight sander has 1/3 HP and didn't do dick.

Here's a picture of a knife I made for my mom. I needed the practice, so I asked her a few questions about what she needed in a knife for the kitchen. This knife is pretty ugly, but she loved it, and hasn't had to sharpen it once in the six months she's had it. She uses it for deboning.

What he's saying is, porshes are really nice, they're expensive, and those who buy them never actually push them as hard as they're meant to be pushed. I know this is a fact here (I live in wine country). Every time i'm on my way outtacity and innawoods I have to pass a ton of wineries on a higheay, where the speed limit is 55, and there is ALWAYS some 65+ year old asshole in a porche doing 30, lookin at wineries.

What i'm trying to say is, porches are fast and nobody actually drives them fast.

I have to deal with the same thing everyday, that's just how some old people drive. It's very annoying when you have to switch down to high RPM, but you have to keep in mind that you'll be that old guy one day.

The truth is if I'll ever buy a Sebenza I will not use it for anything. That's where you're right. I just wonder if Sebenza can outperform all cheaper knives and I don't think it can.

There's a long-standing difference of opinion on how to approach gear. Some would rather carry more items that are well specialized, others would rather carry fewer general-use items. The former wants to carry a more delicate knife plus a hatchet, the latter wants a beefier knife that can serve both purposes.

Is there any good reason to be the second guy? If you're doing some kind of challenge where your number of items is limited. Most people are doing it because it's a meme. If imitation were very important to you, you wouldn't have asked for a justification.

It's something cool to be able to do, and there's a very slim chance that being able to do it will save your life. But that's true of damn near anything, so it doesn't mean much.

Oh, I was way off.

I'm looking for suggestions for a picnic folding knife for food prep.

I always used my Opinel but carbon steel gets rusty and friends bitch about that. It is also tedious to clean in the part of the lock.

So looking for something simple, cheap, stainless steel, thin blade, with an easy to clean design. Also lock because my friends aren't very bright.

do thouse doukdouk things lock? a lock is always goung to make things more complicated to clean and an opinel is about as simple as you can possibly get, so i would advise just getting a stainless opinel
>>

Honestly? A little fixed knife would be the easiest. If you're going to go for a folder then consider a frame or liner lock as it often has an 'open' design which is easier to clean than a back-locking knife.

Knife that jumps to mind would be the Boker Urban Trapper. Sexy, too.

Douk douk doesn't lock but as far as I know the spring is rather strong and I actually like the design, but I'd rather it as an EDC because I find it really elegant looking.

Maybe a fixed blade is the way to go. I always associate them with a big knife stuck in your belt, and I rarelly use a belt, so if I can find something small enough to drop it into my pocket or with a sheat that features a clip I'll probably get it.
>>
>>691235

Honestly I'd just say get a stainless steel mora. They weigh nothing, their kydex sheaths are decent, stainless is going to be good for food prep, and if needs be you can use it for other camp tasks too.

>Q: 'm planning on buying some sharpening stones. Should I need anything else other than a grit 240/800 stone and a grit 2000/5000 to start out with? I'm thinking that I would still need something between 240 and 800.

>>should i buy a strop?

Not a bad idea. I use the back of an old belt. Works good.

>>should i buy a guide?

Looks like it comes with one.

A cheap knife to practice on?

>I just wonder if Sebenza can outperform all cheaper knives and I don't think it can.
That's not what I was saying, I was indeed saying that people don't use their Sebenzas for anything except looking pretty on a shelf, or maybe cutting cardboard.

final, bought this, the carbon looks a bit more modern and under the radar in an office setting.
D2 steel should be easier to sharpen, not that scandi grinds are hard to sharpen...
Size is as large as you can go, so it's final.

Didn't think of an old belt actually. Good Idea.
Ive got a cheap sog to practice on but it is partially serrated so there isnt much non serrated to it. I guess I can play around with my kitchen knives too.
I was just wondering if it was worth getting a decent guide that changes angles for some of my other tools. What would be a good system for sharpening serrations by the way? Almost seems like I should have gotten the spyderco system just for that

The deodorant is for point of reference. This knife can take a beating and is perfect for Battoning. It's thick spine and wide blade make it the perfect out door knife.
>>
>>691343
Why would you have wood to split in the woods in the first place? You're not going to have logs so big you need to split them for a fire, unless you have a way to cut trees into logs in the first place, which you don't because you said you don't have an axe.

Hatchet

There's no reason not to carry one with you, and they're more important than any big hunting knife.

A hatchet and a GP folder is all you need
>>
>>691352
unless you had a nifty pocket saw to go with you knife. then you could baton smaller logs that you've cut. i ain't say its practical but it is doable
>>
>>691635
however a big hunting knife is better then nothing at all right? and your right hatchet, not axe.
>>
>>691682

Sure, a big hunting knife works well enough, and the GP ones can be used for splitting timber.

However, a basic hatchet is way cheaper, and a hatchet plus a folder for cleaning and cutting would run about the same price as a big hunting knife

I carry a hunting knife on my belt when walking and working the property, and it's useful, but if I'm camping, I'll swap it out for a hatchet in a second.

For angles, i don't use a guide. I go by feel/sight, so i can't really help you on the angle part.

I've seen some people who use perminent marker on their knife edge, then sharpen. By doing this they can see if the stone is taking steel off on the complete edge. (note: will probably stain stone, not sure if it will clog stone extra. If you are gonna do this, maybe do it on a cheap stone from a hardware store. Once you get good free hand angles then go to good stone without marker.)

For serrarions, maybe a diamond rod? Get just the lansky system serration piece? I'm not too sure.
