Anyone else kind of get depressed during winter? I mean, I fish and catch little to nothing. There's not much to hunt. What the fuck am I supposed to do. I'm so bored. I wanted to ice fish, but frozen lakes around here wont support my weight.
>>
>>675342
Lose weight so you can go ice fishing
>>
>>675342

I'm at a ski lodge 8000ft up the Wasatch Mountains so I'm enjoying the fuck out of this winter. It's been super sunny and beautiful the last two days, us we're supposed to get a fresh dump of snow this weekend.

I head out to the swamps just before sunset and hunt for Bigfoo... um, raccoons.

feels weird seeing a swamp with snow, but I associate swamps with my childhood in the deep south.

Move to an environment where you enjoy all the seasons. Vacation in snowy places only if you want to then.

I feel you. I have Raynauds, so outdoor stuff, even with gloves and wool socks is a no go in the cold. I am stuck inside until it warms up

My wife has that. You definitely have to be very careful but it doesn't have to be a prison sentence in the winter. True alpine boots are very warm, especially with chemical toe warmers.

Heavy duty mittens instead of gloves also will keep your hands warm. I'd recommend the Mountain Hardwear Jalapeno mittens. You can increase the warmth even more with chemical hand warmers if necessary, but I think it probably wouldn't be.

I'm only depressed this winter because there's no fucking snow where I live but it's still cold. When it snows and the snow stays, winter is best season.

Since I've got a massive fear of ticks, winter is the season when I go /out/ most of the time. I just got back from a week of winter camping on an island in Lake Huron, and had a blast. I even went cold-water surfing during a blizzard, it was fucking amazing.

>usually get depressed during winter
>move to South Florida
>November comes, first brisk wind in months comes through and I get that depressed feeling I used to get in September when I lived in IL
>remember that I live in FL now
>brisk wind means the best few months of the whole year are just ahead

Even after a few years, my body and brain isn't fully adjusted to that. I guess the trauma that is midwestern winters will live in the back of my mind for my whole life.

I love hiking in the snow as long as it hasn't been compressed and refrozen into ice yet, means you can walk trails without spending the entire time looking down to make sure you don't trip and more time enjoying the snowy scenery around you.

When it has frozen into ice it makes for some questionable ledge pathways, though.

I moved from MA to Sydney, Australia. Winters in Sydney are suprisingly cold and wet, but no worse than a typical October in MA. Life is truly glorious in Sydney and I never get the SADs there.
>>
>>676909
I have this too. hands and feet. it sucks so much.
>>
>>678579
What's the average high temp during your winters there? Summer temps? Also, did it take a few years for your body to adjust to summer being in January?

El Niño fucked with our winter this year. Not too bad, but we had a warmer than usual fall and beginning of winter. Mid 80s during the day up until very recently. It finally cooled off, but now we are getting quite a bit of rain. Which is odd because this is normally the dry season where there won't be a cloud in the sky from December to March. Still beats 20F and shitty, dirty, grey snow of the ground.

Also summers aren't bad here at all as long as you live near the coasts. Everybody thinks July and August are unbearable in FL. But here in South Florida by Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach, it is mid-high 80s every day with a nice breeze coming off the ocean all summer. And a 50% chance of a 20 minute thunderstorm at 4pm everyday. Never gets into the 90s and rarely is the sun covered by clouds for more than an hour or two. Plus with that gulfstream, the ocean feels like a heated pool any time of year.
>>
>>675342
Go skiing or some shit, there's more UV radiation at higher altitudes.
>>
>>678585
A winter day will typically be like 60ºF. Tends to be rainy and wet though, and blustery, so it feels a cold. Overnight lows during winter can easily be in the 40s or even 30s on rare occasion. As I see it the three the reasons 60º in Sydney feels colder than in MA are:
-Geography - the very humid and cold ocean air and harbor fog roll through the city every night/morning
-Society - there is minimal investment in climate control/heaters in buildings, so you can never really escape the chill
-Personal - the glorious weather season is like 9 months long so you get spoilt quick

Summers always seem to have one or two weeks where it's like 90s-100 but generally 80s, and not humid at all so it's fantastic. I've moved back and forth a couple times and it generally takes only until the first season change to "accept" that the season are inverted. Ain't no thang.
>>
I feel the winter both emotionally and physically, yeh. Get really tired and don't wanna do shit, but force myself to go out.
Bush walking is special in the winter, as prints are more visible and obvious, you can see a lot more since leaves are not covering everywhere.
Just go for a walk, maybe try to do some tree identification, harvest what you can such as wood, pine resin, etc.
I took up whittling this winter and it has helped a lot. Just make the effort man
Another fun thing to do is make pine needles tea. Look up a recipe.. It is super easy.

Sounds good. Here are the rules.

From henceforth the aforementioned "nudedancing" shall be referred-to as a "Test of Manhood". The Test of Manhood is a nonsexual, nonspiritual activity. Rules of Fight Club generally apply to Test of Manhood.

A Test of Manhood is to be undertaken on a dare. The conditions have to be especially unpleasant of difficult, or otherwise risky, to qualify as a ToM. Examples of prior Tests of Manhood are the ice river plunge, the naked run across the frozen field, the naked rainwalk, the naked flood rapids crossing, walk to the rock, and the grave plunge. All activities are done under cover of dark, in secret, without any photos or recordings allowed, and without discussion during daylight, and never with the plebs.

Oceanic winters are worst desu
>Mostly overcast
>Highs around +5°C, but may sometimes go up to +15 or stay below freezing
>Often windy as fuck combined with drizzles
>Snow rather rare and usually melts in a day or two
>Therefore grey/brown looking landscapes with mud everywhere
>50°N therefore 4:30pm sunsets in mid-December
Good thing it's soon coming to an end
>>
>>678749
That sucks. I would rather deal with 25F and snow over 40F, overcast, and steady light rain. At least the snow looks kinda nice.

Really depends where you live though, I have no swamps around, the area is rather well-drained (hill slope, soil is generally on the dry side between March and November) and the next little stream is 120m in altitude below me, means very little trouble with insects during summer, used to be worse when neighbours still had horses in the backyard though
>>

Sweden is a lot better, with established trails, cheaper registration and so on

Basically we have a law that regulates the use of motor-vehicles outside of roads and privately-owned growable farm land. The law, in short, is "Its illegal to do anything"

You can apply for a license to use it for "work", which is basically transporting stuff along ski trails to cabins or restaurants, power companies and such. Private use is wholly banned, and you're not allowed to use a motor vehicle outside of roads and growable farmland.
