This particular filter makes use of the "good bacteria method" which it mentions briefly but I have no experience with. I consider this infographic a decent start in simply learning about primitive walter filtration. Perhaps this graphic could be used as a template for one that incorporates a final stage of charcoal of varying fineness?

Last time I went to a CPR class, required by my work, it was "hands only" no breath. The guy teaching it was kinda old but he was like "now it's hands only, last time it was 30 compression's 2 breaths, before that it was 15 comp 2 breaths, before that it was 5 comp 1 breath"

just saying not criticizing or anything.

It's understandable that those figures would change in a work training/safety class. The standards have changed rapidly over the last 2-4 years. As an EMT we are taught all those figures under different circumstances. 30 comp 2 breaths is generally for 2 rescuer cpr. 15 comp 2 breaths is for one rescuer. And I've honestly never even heard of 5 comp 1 breath. I'm a lisenced RN and EMT.

Not OP, but yes, if the mesh isn't fine enough the charcoal will get in the water.

Some thoughts on charcoal. Activated charcoal (activated carbon) is GOAT for this, as activation means that are lots of pores in the really tiny particles, which gives a huge surface area to bind and catch bacteria and contaminates. It is absolutely safe to injest, in fact we use it in the hospital to bind poisons in the gut. It's cheap ($5/lb on ebay), will last forever if tightly sealed, and totally worth keeping on hand for DIY water filters. Even if it turned my water black I would not hesitate to drink it.

On making your own activated charcoal - just don't do it! People don't have access to the industrial equipment to make pressure-activated charcoal. There are YouTube videos on how to make chemical-activated charcoal; they use dangerous chemicals, and home ovens don't give enough heat to make the activated charcoal much better than plain charcoal.

Plain charcoal made at home from wood can be effective for water filtration, but not of much medical use. You just have to be careful, it depends on the species of wood whether it's safe. Never make plain charcoal with wood you haven't harvested yourself. Oleander, mountain laurel, cocobolo, and many others can cause massive allergic reactions or excruciating death. Any wood used for smoking meat should be relative safe for making plain charcoal. Plain charcoal is okay, but meh tier compared to activated charcoal.

Charcoal briquettes should never be used, as most are made using coal dust, which contains heavy metals and high levels of sulfur, which will give the water a rotten egg smell and taste. There are coal-free briquettes, but all briquettes use a chemical (sodium nitrite) as a release agent that turns into a cancer causing chemicals (nitrosamines) by stomach acid.

Long-winded, but I hope some anon finds this info useful.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) would be okay for a true medical emergency allergic reaction. The problem with first generation antihistamines is the extreme sedation and hypertension they cause, especially if you're just treating sniffles. Drowsy meds obviously cause sedation. The problem with aspirin is the increased risk of bleeding, and the fact that as aspirin reacts with moisture over time, it will form a toxic compound.

yea but i don't pack it for the sniffles. i pack benadryl in case i have an actual alergic reaction. and it's not like benadryl knocks you right out, no matter how much you take you should still have time to pitch your tent and get in a sleeping bag if you think your going to pass out.

in my opinion a few benadryl tabs are basic medicine in any first aid kit. they can save lives and anyone with any knowledge of basic medicine can use them to treat allergic reactions.

I agree that Benadryl belongs in every basic first aid kit. Remember you get what you pay for in these infographics, I was just giving the pharmacological reasoning, on why the picture had antihistamines on the no go list. One caution on Benadryl, even though it doesn't knock one out immediately, using a knife while under the influence of it can be dangerous. Obviously, YMMV, and it depends on how much tolerance you've built up to it. I've seen people who use it as a sleep aid, and can function normally with enough on board to tranq on elephant.

Can you work towards RN from EMT? I'm interested in RN but not willing to do the nursing home route.
>>
>>684601
If in the US, you don't have to do anything involving nursing homes. I was a volunteer EMT, and when I went back to school to get my chemistry degree, I ran the computer lab and patient simulator lab at the nuring department at my four-year university.

Here's my recommendation. Get enrolled at a community college and do the two year RN program and get your degree. Get a job in nursing; if you like it and want better pay, enroll in a RN to BSN bridge program at a nursing school at a four year school. You'll save thousands of dollars by doing the first two years at community college. Additionally you'll have to put up with less garbage. A lot of straight four year students don't appreciate where they're at; the RN to BSN bridge students really seemed hungry to better themselves, and really seemed to get a lot more respect from the faculty members.
>>
>>684607

Wrong. My first and second semester clinicals were in nursing homes. Thats 12 hours per week mandatory working as a nurse in a nursing home, but you're a student nurse, which means you do the basic shitty duties of a CNA. This is unavoidable for school.

Also, if you do an associates RN you'll have a harder time going right to a hospital. In my area no hospital will hire a new grad associate, people generally have to work long term care for about 2 years first.

Being an actual RN in a nursing home is not too bad depending on the company because the CNAs do all the shit work and you basically just pass meds and tell them what to do. But you can't avoid doing shitty CNA work in school.
>>
>>684601

EMT is a great start and will help a lot in your RN clinical skills, but nothing about EMT prepares you for the amount of lab material and studying you have to do in order to be able to pass the complicated question type found on the NCLEX exam.
>>
Sorry for the triple post lol just wanted to add:
Becoming a nurse is hard and sucks, but BEING one is pretty fuckin sweet when you get where u want to be. I still only have associates in nursing but I make 32 bucks an hour and only work 36 hours a week. 3, 12 hour shifts and 4 days off per week. I can live with that!

yeah, I don't think #1 & #6 can be made with a square tarp, unless someone would like to enlighten me on how it's done

Actually I took Anon's not wanting nursing homes as not wanting it for a job for four years, not as not wanting to perform nursing school requirements that vary by semester. But I understand the way it was phrased was up to interpretation.

>The problem with aspirin is the increased risk of bleeding, and the fact that as aspirin reacts with moisture over time, it will form a toxic compound

Not strictly true, yes it will break down to salicylic acid and ethanoic (or acetic if you prefer) acid, but a moderate dose should be perfectly fine providing no history of stomach lining issues. What will happen is the anticoagulant function will diminish, though you can still use it as an analgesic. Generally solid medications (i.e. tabs, capsules, powders) are fine unless they are discoloured or have a distinct odour.
>>
>>674836
IDK about in the US, but in the UK we don't do breaths anymore as it is essentially useless

I agree that the negatives of ASA aren't often that major, but this is for an /out/ or survival medkit. There are much safer analgesic alternatives. We both know that aspirin wouldn't be approved as an OTC if wasn't grandfathered in by the FDA. The reason it's a potentially poor choice in a medkit, is related to the increased toxicity of salicylic acid compared ASA (yes I know saclicylic acid is a metabolite). The transient ototoxicity in zinc-deficient individuals could be a hazard while out, and salicylic acid has an increase risk of intracranial bleeding compared to aspirin.

Not that I have a dog in this fight, I was just explaining to Anon why ASA was on the no-go med list.

lf you stretch to induce sharp pain, it is likely you will damage your muscles over time, or even acutely tear them. To actually increase pain threshold, weightlifting is a good idea, but not to create immediate pain, that is just foolish and unsafe
>>
>>686187
Breaths are pretty standard here, but vary by case. Like breaths for pediatric patients is extremely important. In a clinical setting you'll likely see non-stop breaths and compressions. Also the efficacy of breaths depends on the device you're using. Mouth to mouth being the worst

Are you not aware that most MREs require water? Do you have any idea what you're talking about at all? lol

If you can't find water you've got bigger problems than starving.
>>
>>686942
no they don't
they have like teabags and chocolate powder, but you can eat the actual meals without adding boiling water
>>
>>687096

You can eat anything in those pictures without boiling water. Or even any water for that matter. It's going to be dry sure, but again, if you can't find water you have far bigger problems than being hungry. Stop being dense.

As a newly graduated BSN RN, I agree with >>685189. I was hired by the hospital where I did clinicals before I graduated or took state boards. If you have the money and time, go straight for the BSN. The hospital I work for also pays better for BSN due to wanting magnet status.

In my area (WNC) the local hospital prefers to hire RN's from 2 year colleges as the have better clinical experience. Also most of the Community College students do clinicals at hospitals.

They're handy as hell... I tie them in the ends of my canoeing ropes with a small rubber ball in the center. They make the ropes easier to throw (such as over a limb or to someone in the water) and give you a handle to hang on to.

If you follow the directions exactly, you will actually fall over and black out for 4-8 seconds. You completely lose consciousness and are disoriented upon waking. The effects are over very quickly. The main dangers are that you lose all muscle control and thus fall, possibly hitting your head. Also if you try this on drugs or too drunk you may not even wake up.

i'm not 100% on the following, so dont blame me if you have shit happen. in a survival situation could be useful though. i am fairly sure that all edible fruit tree wood, and any tree with edible sap (birch and maple for example), can be used to make charcoal. also fairly sure that evergreens should not be used at all.
