Yes gears. What's best depends on the distance and your preference but hybrid or cyclocross is always a good bet. Also, get some proper fenders.

A belt drive singlespeed?

If you have any hills on your commute then a single speed is not a good idea

Get a trek 7.2 fx. I've been commuting 100-130 miles a week on it since april and I like it just fine. It's very addicting
>>
Spend 500 dollars on a very lightweight 700c road bike with no shocks(they will slow you down) with gears, 21 speed is fine for this

>road bike
But not a race bike. Skinny tires and no fenders suck for commuting.

Get a cheap hybrid but not really cheap supermarket-tier. Also avoid any hybrid with suspension they're usually shit, disc brakes too.

>should I get one with gears

Of course you should get one with gears you twat.

Also get mudguards, a rear rack and lights.

I wouldn't recommend getting a road bike for your first bike. Also a cheap road bike will be shit, and a second hand road bike will probably require fixing.
