What's the big deal? I get cairns to some extent, they look fucking dumb on the side of the trail. Geocaches on the other hand, when done correctly, are barely noticeable even when you're looking for them. Are you guys really so pretentious about being /out/ that you have to fuck up the fun of a child geocaching with his dad?
>>
>>629227
making fun of, and kicking down cairns is just an edgy /out/ meme.
Normal people don't really give a shit.

Visited Maine recently and saw this sign. Immediately thought of /out/
>>
I always assumed it was just kids meming too hard for their own good. I geocache with my kids to increase their engagement while /out/. I'd be pissed if my 6 year old found a cache and we opened it to find some guys poop, but I'm pretty sure the guys who type that shit are too busy being edgy on 4chan to actually go outside.
>>
>>629336
Maine is the state where cairn kicking started.

I live in Maine, I know where that sign is, and I just got some new /out/ stickers. Going to go throw one up next week.

>>629337
there are tons of us who shit in geocaches. just youtube "geocache shit, poop, feces" There are videos from all over of people finding our warm steamers.

Maybe you should bring your kid outside and do something that is closer to nature, teach him to fish or fuck IDK, anything other than geofagging.

Some of these smaller boards have this idea that they are better than /b/. /b/ informs every board on 4chan. Maybe not modern /b/ but certainly /b/ circa 2008/2011.
This is meant to be an edgy outlaw place. If you dont like that, you need to find some REI sponsored camping forum somewhere.

again, geocaching is just stupid. you should teach your kid to look for actual wonders in nature, not tiny plastic containers while following some arbitrary rules. what the fuck is wrong with a little exploration? seems like stuff not recorded under your alias on some website doesn't really happen anymore tbqf

keep that shit to the puzzle ones in parks and other semi-urban areas and it would be okay. shit happens in the woods and the poop will flow, brace your selves

>I thought cairns were used for navigation and people just shit all over that and build a lot more in places you don't need

True at least in the Scottish mountains: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/oct/30/ben-nevis-visitors-urged-not-to-build-mini-cairns

>>According to the John Muir Trust conservation charity, Ben Nevis, which stands at 4,409ft (1,344m), as well as peaks near Loch Ness, have been blighted by new DIY cairns, which not only detract from the scenery but also present a hazard by misdirecting other walkers.

>>In the worst cases, visitors are even leaving excrement under the stones. The most bizarre items found under unofficial Ben Nevis cairns in recent years include a wheelchair and a piano.

>>
>>629227
In the Austrian Alps, cairns used to be path markers, and every time a guide passed one, he'd add a stone to the cairn. That way, you could see how often a trail was used (and thus how difficult it was) by the size of the cairns.
Now that weather-resistant paint exists, and nearly everyone builds cairns anywhere, so they kind of lost their purpose.
